BEWARE of SPOILER

Reading it a second time gave it a different feeling. I did not even notice that tears were flowing down my cheeks.

Spoiler

Qi Yan (ML) had a sad background. His family was scheme upon and the previous Emperor was in cahoot with the main perpetrator. After the new Emperor came into power, the perpetrator's power was undeniable. It may even jeopardize his power as the Emperor. After investigation, it was proved that Qi's family did nothing wrong and the family was pardoned. But, the only living member of the family was Qi Yan. With the Emperor's backing, Qi Yan started investigating the perpetrator's insidious actions. And during that investigation, he met Xia Xun (MC)

Xia Xun also had a sad background. His mother was a concubine from a humble background and he wasn't accepted by the Xia family. The only good person in the family was his eldest sister-in-law. A chance to meet with Qi Yan gave a new meaning to life for him. He falls hard for Qi Yan even though not realizing it at the time. All he knew was that he wanted to share all the best things in the world with Qi Yan although he, himself had nothing much to offer.

A decree by the Emperor led to a disaster for the Xia family and the one in the lead to execute it was Qi Yan. Xia Xun was horrified. He was clueless and brokenhearted. He lost his soul that day. There was no more meaning to live. But, he persevered for his eldest brother, the only living family member he had left. 7 years later, Qi Yan and Xia Xun met again which led to the start of the story.

[collapse]

I had a love-hate view of Qi Yan. Comparing both him and Xia Xun, it was obvious Xia Xun had it harder. And he also had the revelation towards the end of the story.
Spoiler

For Xia Xun to finally forgive and accept him, was like the biggest salvation.

[collapse]
Xia Xun was his bottom line. And whatever made Xia Xun happy was also what made him happy. The last chapter showed that Qi Yun still had some opinions when it came to Xia Xun's action but, he never voiced it out. There was nothing that Xia Xun do that could anger him. And we as readers, could see that Xia Xun had the power in the relationship. <<less

The story is pretty cliché which is fine. However the liberal use of flashbacks become ineffective because there's no big reveal, everything is too predictable. And the ending is abrupt and very Hollywood chick flick-y. Basically the novel is like an emo teenager. Tries too hard to be clever. But not quite there. Tries too hard to be angsty, but falls short.

The best thing about it is the translation is very good. Kudos to the translator

A personal 3.5/5 (rounded up to 4) stars.

Honestly, the story is quite nice but not my cup of tea. I do like both the MC and ML. My favorite chapter by far is the last one. It really shows how some things stay constant in life, but the majority of things will change.

I was expecting something a bit more... angst though? I didn't like the flashbacks later on but I can see why people would. As someone mentioned, it was very predictable. Not a waste of time if you want... more>> a historical read with angst, nice side characters, and seeing the weight of one's choices.

Spoiler

also if you like seeing the ML get injured a lot LOL.

I like this but didn't find it satisfying. I don't blame the ML. To me, he suffered too much. And I hate that all the misunderstanding could have been solved with a conversation, even if the conversation was forced. The romance wasn't satisfying to me. The romance and misunderstanding took so long.

They were both victims but the MC was already prejudiced towards the ML, choosing to ignore the kind acts he showered him. He was too unforgiving and didn't give the ML a chance for explanation. The ML should have... more>> also forced him to listen to his explanation instead of them dragging thing out🤷 although, he's not without blame because he was also obsessive.

I also don't consider this as wife chasing crematorium because the ML wasn't scummy and he's also a victim. It wasn't satisfying to see him suffer that way.

Spoiler

They only got together at the end of the last chapter and we only got a chapter of 'sweetness' in the whole story...

The translation is good though. <<less

I love crematorium stories, and this one is basically a crematorium from start to finish except for the extra. I really enjoyed reading it, it didn't seem heavy at all, It contains many flashbacks and they are not exhausting at allAt first it is difficult to understand the ML but as I progressed I managed to understand it and support its reconquest of the MC. I understood the MC from the beginning, it was a misunderstanding that made it difficult for him to forgive ML, but I liked that he... more>> didn't give in so easily since he had his reasons. The plot did not seem slow to me, it had adequate progress, MC and ML had a good development, I also liked the development of the secondary characters, showing that each action has a purpose.

Recommendations for this novel for those who want to see ML fervently pursuing MC, ML is a cold character but is willing to give his heart to his beloved person MC <<less

I don't think there was anything wrong with the overall story itself, I just really hated the structure of it. The first chapter is essentially the climax then the story starts 6 months before that chapter but interspersed randomly throughout are flashbacks from 7 years ago. I hated the jumping back and forth. And honestly, I felt like the dialogue was a bit lacking and that a lot of the situations seemed really contrived to create angst, for example all the times that the ML's guard would try to speak... more>> up and the ML stopped him from revealing anything. Idk I feel like at this point I've read much better wife chasing crematoriums to be moved by any of the angst here. <<less

Solid story with decent plot with historical setting. Really wish it was presented in chronological order... Their relationship build up and underlying tension was strong enough that it would have been sufficiently engaging without jumping all over the place. Then we would have been able to be along for the whole ride and properly enjoy their reunion & chasing. Wish there were more sweet parts too.

Well-written but could have been so much better. Wouldn’t re-read.

Well, not the best crematorium story I've read because all throughout, I felt quite uncomfortable reading. In other wife chasing novels, you get this feeling of satisfaction when the gong grovels or getss hurt but here, I never experienced it.

Spoiler

For one, the gong wasn't really s*um so when he got hurt, I was just wincing. And every single chapter is just the 2 of them hurting each other and feeling guilty and refusing to talk about the past. Idk I was just kinda uncomfy all throughout.

[collapse]

I also felt like the author rushed the explanation for the gong's actions. When it's basically the main driving point of the story. Lyk why did he act the way he did??? But it was quickly (and even a bit lazily) explained.

On the bright side tho, the secondary characters are very lovable. Tho I feel lyk there should be a tragedy tag for the other couples bec it seems that everyone else except the main couple got separated. <<less

WARNING: 7 year time skip in the beginning, Sickly ML

I added time skip to the tags. If you're curious on how MC forgives ML for killing nearly his entire family then don't read because MC is a concubine's son, a son of a prostitute. He's ab*sed by his entire family and their servants. It's a bit annoying that the author took a shortcut by making it an abusive family rather than a loving one, but I guess it's understandable. There's a scene early on where MC stays with ML to... more>> make him feel better from his illness. Which doesn't even make sense since MC is disgusted by and hates ML for killing his family. But with the abusive family background it makes sense to throw the death of your family to the curb. It was just unsatisfactory. MC has a chance to kill ML with an assassin but doesn't because he still loves ML and his family is abusive and whatever, *Shrugs*. Author starts story at near the end, then flashbacks toward what I would say is the middle of the story which is after 7 years and skips the part where he was seen and caught by ML. Then afterwards, a lot of flashbacks or memories about the 7 year gap. I as a reader didn't feel much of an emotional build up or angst due to the time skip. I just felt bad that the MC was hurt so much and the ML seems like he'll fall apart any minute. Not sure why people thought this was an intense and passionate story. I did like the rationale behind ML and some of MC thinking. <<less

Good translation, but predictable and forgettable plot. This novel was my first foray into the crematorium trope so I didn't have much expectations except angst, yet it still managed to miss the mark. It was hard to get attached to the characters. Despite the backstory and motive, they all felt pretty flat. I wish the depth of the main characters' past relationship was explored much earlier in the story, it would've raised the emotional impact of the ML's betrayal and redemption.

First of all, thanks a lot for the smooth and enjoyable translation. I really enjoyed reading it.

The main thing I loved was how the author focused on the main characters' feelings. It was clear they worked hard to show their emotions right and naturally. This was really the heart of the story, and everything else revolved around it. A lot of writers rush through deep feelings and pay more attention to other parts of the story, but here it was the opposite

and that was really good.

The main characters felt... more>> real. Their feelings were clear and believable, like real people. I often have this problem with novels: characters act differently from how people would in the real world, and I can't connect with them. Luckily, that wasn't the case here. They weren't too complicated or strange; they felt normal and easy to understand.

About the side characters: They did their job well and made the story more beautiful, but they were predictable, and that was a problem. Sometimes they did foolish things just to move the story forward, and it didn't seem logical. This was a weak point in the story, but I think it might be because the author is still gaining experience

and it's not a huge problem.

Spoiler

Honestly, right up until the end, I couldn't guess whether this story would have a happy or sad ending. And that's because Xia Xun was completely justified in not wanting to return to his relationship with Qi Yan. While Qi Yan's revenge was understandable, wanting both revenge and to keep Xia Xun's pure love was just unrealistic. It's obvious: when you destroy someone's family, you ruin their life and cause them immense suffering. At the very least, if Qi Yan truly wanted to protect his relationship with Xia Xun, he should have told him about his revenge plans beforehand. Sure, that conversation would've been painful, but it would've been far less crushing than the shock and despair he felt when he found out the truth.

The choices Qi Yan made back then went against the "true love" he claimed to feel. But this isn't bad writing

it's sadly realistic. Even real people often act in ways that can't be justified.

Xia Xun had endured so much heartbreak. His love had completely turned to despair. he kept waiting for Qi Yan... not for love, but for him to finally understand his pain. A lot of his dialogues in the story was laced with bitter sarcasm that cut Qi Yan deep. And it wasn't even intentional. If he could've controlled it, he might not have reacted so harshly. But too many truths had been eating at his heart for too long. Like the fact that a casual friend traveled all that way to retrieve his body... Anyone would expect the person who claimed to love them to be there, yet Qi Yan never even visited his grave.

By the end, Xia Xun had moved past that chapter of his life. he genuinely felt nothing special for Qi Yan anymore. This wasn't him lying to himself

it was his real, present emotion.

About his final choice:

To describe it: Sometimes a person makes an irreparable mistake. The wounds they cause never fully heal. In those moments, forgiving or not forgiving is a deeply personal choice. With his strong spirit and the profound love still rooted in his heart after all these years, Xia Xun chose to take Qi Yan's hand and move forward despite his past wrongs. he felt this was not only Qi Yan's only path to redemption, but also what he, deep down, truly wanted in that moment. That shining, peaceful future was the one he'd unconsciously yearned for all along.

[collapse]

Overall, I really liked the main idea of the story. When I finished the book, I felt satisfied and enjoyed reading i <<less

First off, the translation is excellent. Yun1Yun always does a great job and I plan to read more of the offerings.

The backstory was interesting and the first chapter was beyond powerful, but it still didn't quite work for me. I believe the author didn't have a complete plan actually outlined before they began writing.

It was slow in places and some of the MC's feelings didn't make sense to me. He was described as simple-minded at first and then clever later on. Neither of those were completely spot-on.

The ML had tough... more>> decisions to make, especially because he was in a position of power. Instead of condemning him, I tried to imagine how hard it would be to find the path that would keep the person he loved safe. None of his choices seemed easy and all were problematic.

So, yes, I suppose it was a complex story in its own way, but just not for me. Though I did enjoy the parts when you learned where the side characters ended up. <<less

It's good, slow burning with a lot of misunderstanding that can be solved when you just communicate a little bit.

The ML feels a bit forcefull at times, and egoistic. And the ending a bit abrupt for me.
