Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating

The cousin that Jing Huan has been closest to since he was a child was labelled as “the other woman” in a certain popular online game: only after devoting herself did she know that the other party was a jerk with a girlfriend.

After several days of being bullied online by people in the game, his cousin went abroad in a fit of anger and sorrow.

Jing Huan couldn’t take this lying down; he decided to take revenge for his cousin using the same method as that guy – buy a character in game and kill that slag guy thousands of times online.

With his strength and skill as the Great God when the game was first launched, wouldn’t he be able to kill that guy and force him to quit the server in minutes?!

He went online, eager to fight, but made a discovery after conducting a round of investigations — this slag guy was the number one DPS server-wide, number one on the expert ranking list, number one on the wealth ranking list, number one on the popularity ranking list, and number one on the fame ranking list.

Conclusion: Can’t screw him over.

Jing Huan felt despondent. He was just about to give up when he personally witnessed his dormmate’s online relationship end right after meeting each other in real life. The other party had sent fake photos and changed their voice, and had even cheated him of his money, triggering his dormmate so much that he was almost admitted to a hospital.

Jing Huan felt enlightened as a sudden realisation dawned on him. After comforting his roommate, he moved the high-priced voice changer back to his rented house overnight.

Pretty entertaining, light and fluffy. The MC has depth, as does the ML - without destroying any of the comedic values. The novel does a great job of keeping you interested in their antics. So far the pacing is good and the writing flows nicely, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an uplifting novel to enjoy.

Mm..... It was so long tho you guys and I've read books with 1000 chapters easily. You get what I'm saying here? I skipped 25 chapters at one point and I can honestly tell I missed nothing important ... more>>
Spoiler

especially all those really needless chapters before they get together

[collapse]

The chapters aren't short but the entire middle section and even most of the beginning section is just full of wordy unnecessary words and events. A slight conciseness, just even a little within these chapters, would have made this both easier and more enjoyable to read.... I don't think it's the trans but who knows, I personally blame the author lol. <<less

I'm speechless. This novel is so good that I'd score it 10, no, 100 out of 5 if possible. The setting is good, the characters are done really well (even side characters) and more than anything, I JUST LOVE THE ROMANCE!

First, the setting:

The premise is that both the MC & ML are MMORPG players. So the novel has a fair amount of gaming info. But the author was very good at giving out the information. So, it didn't feel like an info dump, but seemed well integrated into the plot.... more>> Even someone like me, with zero gaming experience, could understand most things (apart from some minute details).

The characters are well written and the portrayal of the MC & ML was absolutely brilliant. We could understand them as gamers as well as ordinary people. The side characters, especially the friends of the protagonists were lovable too and there was no huge drama or love rivalry going on. What I liked the most was that the MC is quite daring and expressive.
Spoiler

He has the perfect amount of masculine charm (unlike the feminized shous of certain novels). He pursued the ML in the beginning as a catfisher to get revenge but eventually pursued the ML a second time after the misunderstandings cleared up.

[collapse]

The ML is also very likable. He has some typical qualities seen in MLs of the BL genre but every quality is served in moderation.

I did feel that the story lacked more drama or at least some genuine quarrels between the MC & ML, but I guess it's fine in the end.

Spoiler

The only real drama starts at ch 93 and ends by ch 101. But it did make me cry ???. If you like, I'll give you people some more spoilers.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Go to ch 67 and later, ch 108. There are some cute parts like the MC & ML getting married online and people in livestream finding out that MC is actually a man. :P

[collapse]

The romance is slow burning but once it starts, it's like wildfire. There are some absolutely brilliant, fluffy moments in the beginning. By the end of the novel, even I as a reader was overwhelmed by the dog food (romantic moments) The smexy scenes were not too explicit but they were realistic and sweet, not just full of lust. A fair warning though, all single dogs will feel like crying after reading all of the dog food! ?? Tl;dr: Good story, good characters, WONDERFUL ROMANCE! MUST! READ! ? <<less

FLUFF FLUFF FLUFF, no brainer romcom with online gaming theme.

Good:

  • MC: I fcking love him. I always like these kinds of characters in romcoms, they're the life of the whole novel.
  • Storytelling: I didn't get bored, each chapter was interesting enough for me to really look forward to the next chap.
Meh/Bad:

  • Prolonged misunderstanding. I feel that this could've been a few chapters shorter and had much more story after they got into a relationship.

This novel is so good! I binge read this for the last two days and I'm hooked! I find it in a forum thread and im do glad I did. The MC is straight but he gradually bends and the plot is a rollercoaster. I was sobbing my heart out while laughing my head off the whole time I was reading this.

Hilarious!!!

Everything is so cute and adorable, especially when the MC tries his level best to complete his self appointed mission. And fails. His “luck” in the game is also funny.

Very entertaining, as a light hearted read.

Ahhh this MC. Oh this MC. I love this MC.

Just a nice fun light-hearted read about a kind of s*upid guy trying to get justice for his cousin but ending up with a boyfriend instead. The shenanigans he and the ML get into are so funny and their relationship is so wholesome.

Only disclaimer is if you get secondhand embarassment easily (which I do), you might have to figure out how to get past some of these scenes (e.g. Even the premise) because it's just asddgfajk.

2/5* - too much focus on the game!

I'm really struggling here... I wonder if it is worth finishing the novel. Whether there will be more focus on their real lives after chapter 19. That is how far I got.

So far, 90% of the time I'm reading about what is happening in the game. And that is soooo boring! I never play games and don't see any charm in playing games. Reading so much about how characters play a game is even worse...

... more>> Too bad!! Reviews are super great.

I will update my review if I ever decide to finish the story. I hope the remaining chapters will change my view. <<less

Just finished it today, and man I have a lot to say about this novel, both good and nitpicky.

Spoiler free TL;DR: The novel is funny, entertaining, and cute. The plot is decent enough and the writing style hooks the reader in. Most of the jokes hit it for me, so if you like petty/childish/dramatic humor it'll probably hit for you too. The relationship is nothing revolutionary, it's just guys being dudes and honestly I dig it. The side characters are a little one-dimensional, but nothing too egregious. The main pair... more>> is a pretty textbook dynamic: shameless, somewhat childish, cute, kindaaaa acts spoiled, but can still stand their ground kind of junior and a cold, rarely expressive, but actually warm inside and loves doting his lover kind of senior. Overall, it's a good, lighthearted read if you don't take it too seriously.

Actual review:

The synopsis already implies misunderstandings and inevitable embarrassment, and boy is there a lot of that. I usually can't stand super embarrassing moments, but I enjoyed the story so much that it didn't deter me. It also helped that the JH (mc) is rather shameless and takes most of it in stride, but still gets super embarrassed at some points in a very cute way.

The cast of characters were pretty great too, they all played solid roles and did what they were supposed to. Supporting characters were generally likeable and funny, some purely existing to fluff up the number of characters or to deliver a reoccurring joke. The (short-lived-ish) antagonist did a good job of irritating you, and the love rival was... actually the love rival was kind of a joke too so there's that.

The comedy really sold the novel for me. It's the type of super dramatic buildup and unexpectedly hilarious payoff that can catch you off guard. The style of humor is pretty consistent, there were some times I genuinely could not help but laugh out loud at some parts, though it was mostly in the first half. The latter half gets more focused on the romance so there was less gags I think, or maybe I just didn't find the ones in the latter half as funny as the first.

One nitpick I have is about the side characters and how they're treated. I get that the story is about the main pairing but I wish the author could have given the side characters more depth, or at least a little development.
Spoiler

The friends of the main pairing are OK in terms of depth, but both JH and XHZ brush them aside so often, especially after they get together, that it gets annoying. They never let their friends in on anything, and always either lie or not correct a misunderstanding their friends end up formulating on their own. Whenever they get bombarded with messages by their friends, usually out of concern or surprise bc of some revelation, they either curtly reply vaguely or ignore the messages. I know that we're probably supposed to assume that main pair hang out with their friends as usual in the days not written in the novel, but I kinda wish the author added at least a few scenes where JH and XHZ relies on or opens up to their friends properly.

[collapse]

Spoiler

There's also the thing with how some side characters drop interesting tidbits about themselves that never gets touched upon again. Like how Chichi was feeling down at the hotel internet café, whatever happened to her after? Who even is she?? Why did we get that whole segment with Xianxian where she said her real life was crap so her game life should at least be better? Just casually dropped to somewhat explain why she's a green tea I guess??? There was also that thing with the wlw guild leaders who've met in real life like the main pair, but there's barely any details given. Oh and there's also the cousin who was catfished, who didn't play that big of a role as I expected in the story. She didn't even find out about XHZ, which would've been a fun read I bet. I just think it would've been interesting if the author developed JH's relationships with the other game users, but I think I get why they didn't, as it would have made the catfishing reveal probably not as lighthearted as it was.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Oh and the whole game thing... I think it was set on the backburner a little too early lol. There was all this worldbuilding in the beginning, but then after that guild instance update where JH got stuck in the sea, there never really was anymore exciting things involving NCH. There was that server fusion, but it was lowkey after the dramatic first day battle. Though the novel does give some funny and interesting details about the game, like the whole child system and the random reveal of hey uh the players actually have houses. Oh, JH and XHZ also always play it in their free time even after they get together lol, kind of got sick of reading the word instances and dailies by the 100s.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Speaking of JH and XHZ, I think I liked their dynamic better as senior and junior before either of them realized the connection to NCH. I just found JH to be cuter always seeking out and greeting XHZ, always trying to spend more time with this cool senior. I probably would have been sold on their relationship by the end more if we got more date chapters or them just getting to know the other more alone in settings other than basketball, NCH, the dorm, or at home. But they are still pretty cute, so it's not that big of a deal. I'm satisfied with how their story ends.

[collapse]

These are all honestly just nitpicks that I just wanted to vent a little, the novel is still great despite all that. If it doesn't hook you in by the first 20 chapters or so it's probably not for you, but if it does, it'll be a pretty entertaining read. <<less

I don't usually write reviews, this is more like my after thoughts.

This novel was such a satisfying read. I was so glad to find a completely translated novel after repeatedly hitting the end of other ongoing ones. Started this as a mean to pass time but ended up binge reading it and finishing it in one day (rip my sleep).

The ML and MC are just *chef's kiss* and the comedy is gold. I love how we get to see HuanHuan's reaction to his own shamelessness. Also like how they accept... more>> their feelings for each other quickly and don't try to deny it. The romance is so sweet, I was clutching my pillow and squealing so hard whilst reading it. Author really knows how to bring on the feels.

This was my first 'gaming' novel. I'm no gamer and was worried that I would not understand or miss out on certain points but it was not at all heavy with terminology or anything like that. In fact this novel has made me more interested in the gaming genre, will definitely start reading PUBG Online Romance after writing this.

5/5 read. Wish their romance continued for 1000 more chapters but sadly all good things must come to an end. Happy reading to all, this is an absolute must read novel. <<less

‪Super cute, sweet, heart-warming and funny story with smooth plot!! Love the characters of both MC and ML, also their friends~ the love line is reasonable.

I also love that Huanhuan actually knew how to play the game. Not just traveled around in the game with ML like some gaming novels. I think it makes this novel the real gaming novel, not the novel that the characters met each others in game

one of the best gaming BL novel I’ve ever read. Recommend this to everyone❤️‬

This novel totally a Jewel!. Fluffy, sweet, and totally amazing, I cant stop smiling to read each chapter, but, there is a heartbreak moments that I really feel hurt just to read it, when both of them almost break up,.. T-T.. but then its solved, both of them totally mature, and the ML totally amazing, possesive but not a selfish, mature, and totally "husband" materials things... Also, the novel totally real, no drama, no s*upid plot, but, its totally feel like reality,.. if someone hobby playing game like them, they... more>> will absolutly agree with this novel point of view,.. I even suspend this novel create by author real experience, ?.. couse almost all the personality in this novel also have in real life, if you are gamers you Will absolutly understand straight away! 4.75 This novel completely changed my perspective on modern danmei. For some reason, I never used to gravitate towards modern settings, but ghfod made me crave more!! This is by far the funniest danmei I've ever read, but also the most embarrassing T_T. I had to pause and exit the novel to cover my face and bite my knuckles so, so many times. But I'm saying this positively! I laughed out loud nearly every chapter. It was incredibly entertaining and all the embarrassment as well as the friend group dynamic... more>> felt very realistic. The plot is obviously silly, but nothing felt too out of place. I personally love the netkama gamer type of novels or manhwas, so this was definitely a hit for me. <<less

Overall, the story is fun to read but... I feel like the characters' setting is way too flat?? How should I tell, there is no information about their major, their childhood, why they do what they do and even about their family background, there is no mention of it at all. Author just simply dived into online romance, make them filthy rich, have very very very good relationships with each others and let them waste their university lives with no sense of purpose like a bunch of idiots T.T.

Really enjoyed this! I laughed out loud at several parts. It's great to see MC being so determined to avenge his cousin, but at the same time finds himself liking ML's online character in certain moments—but then he forcibly twists it into something negative. Like when ML gives him presents in the game, MC is thinking... "I see how it is, you give me presents to win me over, I wonder how many other girls you're giving presents too" etc. When ML really just was... giving a present, either because... more>> he likes MC or because MC's character needs better equipment for them to battle as a team.

The beginning started kind of slow, but then picked up after like chapter 20 or so, and from then on I thought the pacing was pretty good. Side characters were also well written—even though there are a ton of characters (MC's two roommates, ML's roommate, a ton of in-game players), each one has such a distinct personality that it's not hard to remember who's who. Truly a ton of comedic moments and interactions between different characters.

I was a little disappointed though, that ML doesn't have a very memorable personality. He doesn't really talk much or... do that much of anything. He's supposedly a great/genius student, but we don't see any of that either. Honestly, most of the side characters are more interesting than ML. I wouldn't say he's BADLY written per se, just not a very memorable or compelling character for me.

My review will be useless.

I just really love this one.

I already read it 2 times in less than 6 months.

I love the banter, I love the gaming aspect that reminds me the years I played online, I love the fluffyness, I just really love it.

I just skip the extra with their family because I feel sad about his mother reaction. But everything else is comfort food reading.
