The cousin that Jing Huan has been closest to since he was a child was labelled as “the other woman” in a certain popular online game: only after devoting herself did she know that the other party was a jerk with a girlfriend.

After several days of being bullied online by people in the game, his cousin went abroad in a fit of anger and sorrow.

Jing Huan couldn’t take this lying down; he decided to take revenge for his cousin using the same method as that guy – buy a character in game and kill that slag guy thousands of times online.

With his strength and skill as the Great God when the game was first launched, wouldn’t he be able to kill that guy and force him to quit the server in minutes?!

He went online, eager to fight, but made a discovery after conducting a round of investigations — this slag guy was the number one DPS server-wide, number one on the expert ranking list, number one on the wealth ranking list, number one on the popularity ranking list, and number one on the fame ranking list.

Conclusion: Can’t screw him over.

Jing Huan felt despondent. He was just about to give up when he personally witnessed his dormmate’s online relationship end right after meeting each other in real life. The other party had sent fake photos and changed their voice, and had even cheated him of his money, triggering his dormmate so much that he was almost admitted to a hospital.

Jing Huan felt enlightened as a sudden realisation dawned on him. After comforting his roommate, he moved the high-priced voice changer back to his rented house overnight.

I don't even want to write a comprehensive review about it because although this novel might be SO simple, it's so entertaining! Its a novel that you can read when you're feeling down or just want something to pass the time with, definitely a guilty pleasure!

It's been a long time since I've first read it, but I could still remember the happiness it brought me. I was looking for some novel in which the ML doesn't know MC is a man (means hidden identity type of shit)

Someone had recommended this novel on reddit and damn I started it, and man it scratched that itch in my brain so perfectly that I again wanna find something like this again. So good.

About the second hand embarassment, well it was more comedic than anything else. I am pretty prone to second hand embarrassment but this was so funny. Oof to have a man like Xiang Huaizhi, so... more>> lucky hehe <<less

EEEEEEEE!!!! love love loved this novel so so much!!!!!! it was simultaneously cute and embarrassing and angsty and funny, just so many things in one novel auuu!!!! the slow burn is so worth it and inside the slow burn is a lot of super funny and cute character development!!! I want to say I especially love the characters, they’re so so cute and it’s so funny to witness their dynamics with one another ^^

Average!

The MC pretended to be a girl and wanted to take revenge from the ML, but only to know that he had gone after the wrong guy. The ML fell for the MC first. Then there was a twist after the ML got to know the real reason behind why the MC came after him. There was this husband chasing period, the MC wanted to get back with the ML again, where the MC succeeded.

This novel is freaking hilarious and I can't even count the amount of times I burst out in laughter at Jing Huan saying or doing something completely out of pocket. As a reader, you're gonna get a LOT of secondhand embarassment from his shenanagins LOL, this story really knows how to keep you on your toes. Like a lot of other reviews have mentioned, this definitely is a slow burn and a lot of the more romantic aspects don't pop up until the latter half, so don't start reading this... more>> expecting instant connection from the beginning!! Instead tho, you'll get some real-life interactions between JH and Xiang Huaizhi where neither of them can stop thinking about how attractive the other looks LMAO.

had me squealing!! Like lowkey? Huanhuan's got mad rizz when he's not purposefully being cringe, and so does Xiao Xiang... It really ain't fair

If I had to make one single criticism about this novel, it would probably be that I feel like XHZ's backstory didn't do a lot for his character aside from making JH feel more remorse for this actions later on. Also less of a criticism and more of a warning or comment for future readers, but if you're unfamiliar with Chinese slang or sayings, like when the characters refer to themselves or each other as "laozi, " you'll want to read all those footnotes closely or pull out Google. <<less

A very good read.

A romantic love story between MC and ML, starting from mistaken identity leading to falling deeply in love.

MC is a charismatic, friendly, handsome and a funny guy.

ML is a strong silent type guy, but actually very gentle and doting towards MC.

The story was more focused on the aspects of gaming and character interactions in the game more than in real life interaction. I get it, it was a revenge on online dating and stuffs but it isn’t really focusing on the dynamics of the CP till later on. (There are more in real life interactions when they knoew about each others IRL)

Every characters are recognizable enough so their personality stands out a lot. The story was soft and chill. The misunderstanding was easy to understand not dogsh*t or cringe... more>> or cliche too. The humor was good but not to the point I LMAO.

Personally, I like this type of troupe where is Soft and Quiet Top x Outspoken and Bright Bot and that’s how I endured till the end. The ending was alright, I wasn’t satisfied with it that much. <<less

I have been searching for catfish story to read for awhile now before I end up here, and I haven spent 3 days with just short sleeps in between to finish it.

The plot was predictable, easy read, not realistic, but hard to stop reading (or I just can't control myself?). Characters were good.

This was really cute and funny but might only make sense if you've played gacha-guild games that require money (I used Genshin Impact to relate). Esoteric in this nature.

This is one of my favorite BL novels of all time and a total comfort read now. I laughed so much at the side characters' dialogue and cringe-laughed at the protagonist's antics. After the misunderstandings are resolved, the two leads have a very healthy relationship with one another. I also really liked that when it comes to the real life version of the shou, he isn't really described as feminine or beautiful and still retains his masculinity (which imo is pretty rare for danmei). I really liked the shou because... more>> he doesn't take things lying down and has attitude, but he's also reasonable. I also really liked the gong because he's so sweet and supportive the whole time.

One of my favorite things about this novel is that the two leads' friends are also very supportive. I loved reading their interactions with one another and with the two leads because I felt it was a realistic depiction of guy friends in college.

The relationships felt fleshed out but I still wish there was more to read. I've read this novel twice now and will probably reread it again in another year or two. :) <<less

So funny!

Our main character wnat to revenge his sister after she being catfished in an online game. So he pass as a woman and try to seduce this catfish guy!

BUT the catfish was using a robbed account. The original owner just gets it back so the main lead is getting revenge on an INOCENT ;_;

The plot thickens when they meet in real life (without they know the online identity of each other)

VERY SLOW burn story, but also very fun! Love them!

OK, I see why this book gets all the hype. Written by the same author as I Can Do It, I would say that you can roughly expect similar things. This story is a very VERY cute first-love slash university romance between two gamers. It's a feel-good, romcom and fluffy story. I did however feel that the story was longer than it needed to be because there was a long lull period in the middle with nothing much happening. But still pretty enjoyable!

As a gamer, this novel is really relatable for me.

Not about the revenge part, but how girl identity in game is questionable.

And there are valuable lessons to learn:

  1. Don't use deception
  2. Never really believe everything on the internet
  3. GIRL (Guy In Real Life)
There are some random flaws, forgotten plot that is supposedly have explained but author doesn't focus on it, and the explanation of the game systems are probably confusing for non-gamer/non-RPG gamer.

Read it with a pinch of salt and enjoy the silly straight guy catfishing a wronged slag man :)

A sweet and fluffy story.

Although it did feel boring in the beginning it does get better as the story progresses further. There's little to no angst at all.

The second hand embarrassments MC gave me were too much I literally had to speed read those scenes/chapters.

Both MC and ML were extremely lovable. Their sweet interactions made me feel all too mushy. Side characters were great too.

Overall a nice read without much unnecessary drama

I love this story of JH and XHZ! At first I was wondering how they will transition their relationship IRL but the author made it flow smoothly and entertainingly.

You'll enjoy reading GHFOD even without knowing the game because the author makes sure to explain the situation.

What I also love is the cute convos between Yearning For and Tianjing, especially when their relationship has evolved in the latter chapters.

I particularly liked the last 20 or so chapters as it tell JH and XHZ's story with open-mindedness of the characters involved. 🥰🥰 Overall,... more>> this story promotes gay relationships in an open and healthy way.

I'm probably re-reading this when I don't have anything else to read. 😍 Kudos to Chrysanthemum Garden for their quality translation on this! 👍 <<less

I usually avoid stories with this kind of shameless premise, but I saw a review that said it was worth reading and thank god I did! It's a really good read~ Certainly, you'll be suffering through bouts of second-hand embarrassment, and there's a little bit of angst too. But it's just a little bit. The rest of the story is funny, sweet, and soft. The main premise is was stated in the summary: the MC (Jing Huang), foolishly decides to catfish the 'slag man' (the ML, Xiang Huaizhi) that caused... more>> his jiejie to run off abroad. As a protective younger brother, he refused to let said slag man go. Only, he's extremely bad at catfishing lolol and he ends up getting too into the act.

All in all, it's a sweet campus romance with lots of gaming and comedic elements. The characters are very well-rounded, so it feels like you're actually reading about young adults going to school and playing games, rather than just caricatures. The romance was sweet too. There tons of misunderstandings, but it's the reasonable type. The TL is very good too! So! If you're hesitating for reasons similar to what I describe in the beginning, I suggest you give at least the first few chapters a shot! I think it would be worth the read.

CHARACTERS: 9.5/10

I love the characters in this novel, they're all memorable and very real!

Jing Huan (MC)

Kinda foolish but kind-hearted. The prince of the school, but a total sis-con LOLOL. When he decides to catfish the ML, he goes all out. He chooses a girly character, gets a voice changer to get an equally girly voice, and pursues the ML by acting coquettish.

Xiang Huaizhi (ML)

ML is the stoic type. Older than the MC by a year or so, and he's pretty avoidant. Not treating the MC very well in the beginning. But once he fell, he was all in~

ROMANCE: 9.5/10

This is my favorite type of romance: enemies to lovers and identity p*rn LOLOL. It takes a long while for the ML to get accustomed to the MC. And even then, it was only because fate brought them together in reality (not just in-game), which I thought made the feelings a little more genuine!

SETTING: 9/10

I really like the game settings. I don't think they're necessarily realistic or anything like that. I just think the author did a good job incorporating the game with the storyline~ I usually dislike modern day romances. I always feel they're a bit bland, but this one was really good in terms of setting the scene to make the characters shine more.

PLOT: 9/10

The plot is relatively simple. It's nothing big or totally unique. In fact, I'm sure there's plenty of similar stories to this one. But despite simplicity, I found the novel interesting to read. 👍 RATING: 4.6/5

Definitely definitely definitely worth the read! Ahhh I'm going to miss these two idiots T.T their romance was so sweet, I'm looking forward to reading the novel again the future~ (Oh, final note, the novel is a bit spicy! There is a 🌶 extra at the end that's pretty explicit. It's completely skip-able though, so if you don't want to read it, you can just ignore it's existence). <<less

Second hand embarrassment? Shamelessness? Dog food? Everything related to those are in this novel.

I absolutely loved this novel but I had to stop here and there to take breaks because of the second hand embarrassment I got sometimes.

When MC sent that thigh pic and ML saw it, I almost died inside and what was even worse was when MC said that his aunt came. I was seriously going to hurl myself off a cliff. (Aunt is used to refer to a girls period)

But overall, it was a really fun novel to read and I enjoyed it alot to the point where I stayed up really late.

I was fed so much dog food, but who cares when you have Jian Huan and Xiang Huaizhi? There was a lot of fluff and embarrassment, and some humour.

Jiang Zi Bei is absolutely one of my favourite authors. Her novels are always interesting to read and once I pick up a novel she writes I finish it.

I've been reading a few novels these days but I wasn't able to finish them in one go for some reasons. 囧Rz Then I figured out that the comedy genre is missing!⊙︿⊙

Luckily I found this novel! ~^O^~ I'm not into the gaming genre but this caught my interest~ (*^_^*) It wasn't heavy, quite easy to read, and the translators did an amazing job! Yay!

Done eating this dog food, now time to go to Yanyan's!!!! (ﾟ∀ ﾟ)

Out of the three completely tl'd JZB's esport novels, this one is more enjoyable. MC is cute and somewhat embarrassing to read when he's online but I find his interaction with ML during school times was so cute and I lost sleep over this.

ML is also good. Although I was so pissed at him near end I couldn't stop ranting about him hahaahhahhhahah anyhows. If it weren't for that, I would rate this 5. The translations are immaculate as always!

A great lighthearted online gaming story! Ahhh this story made me laugh so much and I adore the MC's personality

Summary: University student Jing Huan (MC, shou) was once one of the best players in this MMORPG but quit several years ago due to his parents. However, he learns that his beloved older cousin was two-timed by player 'Yearning For' and after learning that he is the number one DPS player in the game, MC decides to get revenge by catfishing him and emptying his wallet! He creates a female account... more>> and buys a voice changer to dupe this slag man! However, Xiang Huaizhi (ML, gong) is the owner of the account and wasn't actually involved in the whole affair as someone else was using his account at the time. But the MC doesn't know it and decides to pursue his revenge (and the man) with vigor and the ML falls. Hard.

Let me just say, the highlight of this novel is 100% the personalities of the characters and the humor. The author is so good at creating funny situations.

Jing Huan (affectionately called Huanhuan) : He is so confident. He doesn't tell anyone about his plan because he believes it will succeed and is fully dedicated to playing the role of an obsessed fan who likes slag men. And I mean 100% committed. He throws away his dignity and goes above and beyond when it comes to confessing his 'love'. The funniest thing is that when the MC and ML meet in real life (before the reveal), the ML is shocked at the personality difference between the person online and his real life persona. Oh and I adored watching the MC realize that he is gay and likes the ML.

Xiang Huaizhi: A stoic person who is reserved due to past grievances. It's very cute to see him slowly realizing that the MC is special to him and making him do things he would never do in the past.

He actually discovers who the MC is (without the MC realizing that his cover is blown) and believes that the MC did all this because he genuinely likes him. It's actually quite sad when he realizes that it was all a ploy and that the MC didn't like him T-T

I will say that the characters live a very nice life. They all come from affluent families that can support their choices (they are university boys with cars, expensive limited edition shoes, and can go on vacations). It's unrealistic in this sense and the parents are hardly ever mentioned (except for comedic relief) but let's be honest, we didn't come here for realism!

The funniest scene in this story for me:

  • MC figuring out that the ML is someone he knows in real life and smashing/crushing his phone to prevent his cover from being blown. This scene lives in my mind rent-free
  • ML talking with the MC (before the MC knows his cover is blown) and asking about how it's going with the MC pursuing his crush. The MC in RL is very honest about it and says "the person I'm pursuing isn't that great" which leads the ML to spiral and wonder why he's not that great XD It actually causes the ML to make bigger changes and be romantic because he really likes the MC!

My only complaint with the story is that there was this whole buildup that the MC used to be super strong in the past and his name was known in previous servers but this doesn't really get used as a plot point except in showing that the MC is pretty good at using a notoriously weak character. I feel like it would have been funny if he one day revealed it and he and the ML could have a friendly PK but it's just used to give him background for being good at the game. There are a couple of other plot points that aren't explored as much as I would have liked but this is my biggest gripe!

Overall, this is a super hilarious and fluffy story that is great if you just want something light and easy to read! You might dislike the MC at first because he really is playing the ML but he does it in such a funny, dedicated manner that you forgive him. Also, he redeems himself when he sincerely confesses and pursues the ML. Their CP dynamic is cute too~ (lmao everyone on campus ships them and this extends to even more people later on) <<less
