He Cultivates the Ruthless Path As A Substitute

Everyone in the Fourteen States knew that Zhao Zhao was just a substitute. It was because he had a face that looked like the crown prince of the Celestial Clan, Mo Yu; that he turned from a wild chicken into a phoenix and was noticed by the God of War, Chang Yuan, who shook the three realms, and was accepted as his disciple. Such a master-disciple relationship is doomed to not last long. When the real disciple of the God of War, Mo Yu, wakes up, he will probably pack up and leave.

As the person involved, Zhao Zhao also knows that he is just a dispensable substitute. But it doesn’t matter, as long as this master can help him get rid of the days of living under someone else’s roof.

When it comes to pleasing people, he is a professional.

Zhao Zhao is very conscious of fulfilling his basic cultivation that a substitute should have, so as to comfort his master’s longing for his favourite disciple. His favourite disciple is a gifted and rare genius in the immortal world for thousands of years. So, Zhao Zhao forgets to eat and sleep, and works hard to cultivate. The favourite disciple is very knowledgeable and has a good handwriting, so he reads and writes without getting sleep, and practices calligraphy.

He also took care of everything that the favourite disciple didn’t have time to do.

Zhao Zhao had only one goal: to hold on to Chang Yuan’s thigh and stay away from the dangers of the world. Until one day, Mo Yu woke up.

#Master has only one heart. Master’s favorite disciple suddenly woke up. What should I do to keep the glory in front of me and not look too embarrassed? #Or, before both parties become too embarrassed, just run away.

**

Chang Yuan had always disliked this little disciple who had gone to great lengths to scheme against him and become his disciple on the basis of having a similar face to his beloved disciple Mo Yu. He knows very well that this little thing looks obedient and soft, who loves to please people. But in fact, he is selfish and full of evil thoughts, and would do anything to achieve his goals. His “core” is completely different from the bright and talented, heavenly disciple Mo Yu.

There are three thousand paths to cultivate. But according to his disciple’s temperament, he will definitely choose the most opportunistic one.

Until that day, when the young man appeared under the fierce wind and thunder with a sword in his hand and covered in blood, Chang Yuan realized that the “little spoiled child” in his eyes has chosen the most resolute and difficult path among the three thousand great paths – the Ruthless Path.

Then later, Chang Yuan found a portrait of another man in the room of his cheap disciple. The man in the painting looked 70% like himself. The boy who had always acted cute and coquettishly in front of him said with regret: Although he is not as gentle, considerate, and patient as Shifu, I can still barely fall asleep looking at his face.

Chang Yuan:?

Chang Yuan later realized that the little thing had been pestering him and trying so hard to worship him as a master because he looked like the man in the painting.

**

Everyone knows that the God of War Chang Yuan has a disciple in his heart. He is the son of the Heavenly Monarch and the crown prince of the Heavenly Clan, Mo Yu. Many years ago, he fell into a long sleep because he blocked the calamity for Chang Yuan. In order to wake up his disciple, Chang Yuan traveled all over the world to find a cure. Later, Mo Yu woke up. Everyone thought that the Three Realms would finally be peaceful. Unexpectedly, Chang Yuan began to search the world frantically for another disciple. It is said that not long after Mo Yu woke up, that other disciple fell from the ten-thousand-foot-high Xuexiao Mountain, his soul was scattered, and his body was gone.

A very beautiful story, I cried, laughed a little too, and cried again. I am satisfied with this ending 😌

I really like the characters.

ZhaoZhao this cute little cinnamon roll forever in my heart

And then an exquisite and excellent translation. 🧡
Spoiler

One of the things I didn’t really understand was why his parents let ZhaoZhao almost marry the Phoenix boss when he lost his memory.

I don't think I'll keep reading this. The first 60 chapters are great, I really enjoyed them. The MC is a clever kid who is desperate to find his place in the world. The main tension in the plot is the fact that no matter how good his intentions are, they always come off as selfish and it causes conflicts with the people around him. As for his teacher, I disagree that he took the MC as a disciple because of his face. I think it's pretty clear in the... more>> narrative that this was just an excuse and that he was actually drawn to the MC as a person. He just didn't understand so when people said he just wanted a disciple who looked like his first one, he went along with it and didn't correct them. This is why he was truly hurt when he found out the MC has a shizun before him.

Now, that said, then there is a time skip and everything gets boring.
Spoiler

I really, really hate time skips, especially time skips that serve NO purpose other than to skip ahead to when the characters are adults so you can start putting them into sexy situations. It really cheapens the story. And then there was the scene of him dramatically throwing himself off the cliff? It was so pointless! Just shoved in there to give the teacher something to feel guilty and sad about. And after that is the MC's random memory loss that serves no purpose and is resolved within a few chapters. The first part of the story we get to see the character struggle to get stronger. After the time skip, all we get is 'oh he's so strong and amazing, everyone is in awe of him'

[collapse]
I swear, it's like two different books. If the author wanted to write the MC as an adult, they should have just started the book from the that point and given us the childhood relationships through flashbacks or dialogue. I could push through to keep reading but seeing some of the comments about how dog-blood the other chapters are, I can't work up the interest. <<less

I...I don't have any words for this novel. I rode the roller coaster of this novel, laughing, crying, and screaming in all the loops and twirls. This novel can't be described in words. I'm so sorry, I'm trying my best to describe, but my words are failing me. This is just as good as 'Mistakenly Saving the Villain' which is my favorite novel.

HCTRRPAAS is too good for this world. I love how Chang Yuan and Zhao Zhao are interconnected in so many ways, with the demonic dragon, Wu Qiuyu, and... more>> all of the pieces just fit together in the end. The romance is super slow, and you'll practically miss it, but I like it personally.

Just to let you know, READ THIS BOOK. It has a lot of chapters, but it. Is. SO. WORTH IT! I nearly gave up on this novel once or twice on this journey, and I am so glad that I didn't ditch it. Right now, I'm actually feeling a sense of loneliness and emptiness, which only really good novels put into me.

I love it so much, please please please read it and enjoy this novel... it is really good and I promise, you'll enjoy it.

I was sobbing at the end of the novel. I read the last word and then burst into tears. That's how good it is. This is't a novel where it's all rainbows and unicorns. This novel tells us of the cruel hardships and trials many people have to face in the world... but it also shows us that love is so strong that it can truly save people. Please, read this novel and rate it. You won't regret it. <<less

using each other as substitutes and fall for each other and I like the stubborn ML tbh hes way too cute not the ruthless person who have no feelings bcz two cold hearted prsn dont make a perfect pair in my eyes. One has to be lil lofty person

but I feel like ML misunderstood his orgnl mother intentions she... more>> actually wanted to make it up bcz she loved him liked him but he tho she dont and she pity but in my eyes it was not the same case but I dont like his stepmother shes way too ruthless

I'm rating this pretty high for something I ended up really not liking. I'm torn. I understand those who loved this, and I can see how it deserves it's high rating. But this is one of the few that actually left me pretty upset about how things turned out.

My initial reaction when I first started reading:

Spoiler

Man, I had to keep coming back and checking if this story would be worth it based on the reviews. It's beautifully written and translated, and I already fell in love with the MC in less than 5 chapters in. My heart kept aching for him, but I know it's all part of his character growth. It just felt like I wasn't getting any satisfaction at all.

I had to keep checking to know ML will turn around soon because he honestly sucks and is careless and doesn't deserve any of MC's love even if everything in the story has a point.

MC is super hard working, and can't really blame him for the selfish protagonist tag. He is honestly just wanting to survive and is doing his best to carve out a space for himself where he's almost always out of place.

I finally got to ch.60, because the reviews mentioned it would be a turning point and gosh I kept waiting for it.

I mostly enjoyed MC's cold badass arc, but man, after 60chapters of MC!whump, I was a bit dissatisfied and found lacking the "suffering" ML has to go through. Wish ML got more tortured honestly.

[collapse]

The rating is honestly: for how well written and translated this was. Also how much heartache and love I had for the MC, even the arcs where he was being a bit spoiled (honestly he deserved to act willful after literally HUNDREDS OF YEARS of always being let down and aggrieved).

This is one where I honestly wished it had no romance. I wish my baby got to heal with his adoptive brother and bio family, and find healing and security in himself. I liked the ML only to the extent of being a guardian figure to MC. I only wanted them to get together already, not because their romantic relationship was good, but because it was the few times we had MC truly selfishly and selflessly happy.

Like, ya know that one friend who has had a pretty sh*t life, who ends up with someone who's been the source of your friend's pain for so long, but your friend decides to get together with the person anyway, and you have to grin and bare it because that person makes your friend happy? That. That was my feeling reading the last few arcs.

I knew that MC and ML were end game, and I really honestly was happy when MC got the answers about what happened in the past, so he could start healing and have closure. But f*ck me, I kept wanting to drop it near the end. I really need a palete cleanser after this. I still finished, and honestly wish all the best to the MC and his loved ones. Never gonna be able to come back and reread this tho.

Re: Romance

Spoiler

ML is in like 30% of the book, which I'm both happy and angry for the MC. I honestly didn't see any chemistry or sparks between them besides MC being doted upon as "the little one" as the ML liked to refer to MC as. I'm all for shipping shizun-disciple but I didn't get any butterflies AT ALL, even during their wedding night.

[collapse]

Also, most of ML's suffering happens off screen, which maybe didn't help in making me like the ML at all. And in the few times that it did happen on screen, it just made MC sad, which made me sad, so lack of satisfaction on that end. <<less

Plot repeats itself somehow but it doesn't add any deep meaning or like it's not lesson learned situation (switched babies, amnesia). Mc's strong and clever personality gets erased he became a child like which very disturbing bcs they wanted him to get married. I was so invested but it got weird. Translation is good, also the story building till his second amnesia it's where they lost me.

Although it would feel predictable at times and plot points would not always be cleanly tied off, overall the story still hooked me in. MC manages to be popular with all the important characters, because he looks pretty/pitiable? There was some depth to the side characters

3.5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟.5

The novel started great. It was heartwrenching to read how our MC suffered so much. How he tries to overcome the difficulties.

But..

Spoiler

The novel started to take another turn when he suddenly lost his memory and turned into a bratty whiney young master. It was so interesting to read how our MC choose to turn to the Ruthless Path. Its such a shame the author choose to abandon this storyline. I think the author started something unique and very interesting, but halfway they just didn't want to finish it. It had soo much potential, but the author chose to suddenly make the Path of Ruthless disappear and make our strong badass MC into a playfull childish character. Such a shame.

[collapse]

Because of that, I couldn't really enjoy the novel after the second part.

Spoiler

The way how the bad guys perished was also written very quickly. It was kinda anticlimactic. It was over in a few chapters. I had more expectations after all that build up.

[collapse]

About our MC and ML
Spoiler

i felt how their relationship turned from master-disciple to romantic was too sudden. It needs more build up to be more realistic.

[collapse]

It feels like the author started to novel with great aspirations, but ended the novel rushed. Some parts of the story felt so unfinished.

AND IM REALLY SAD HOW THE AUTHOR DIDNT GIVE US MORE OF THE SIDE STORIES!!! Like:

1.
Spoiler

How does our Mo yu and Huabi end?! Do they have feelings for each other? Will they eventually get together?! I NEED TO KNOW! They were such an interesting pairing.

[collapse]

2.
Spoiler

I needed more of the happy days after our MC found the ML in the side stories when the ML turned back in time. That would be so lovely to read.

[collapse]

It was a lovely read for me, I was really invested in this novel. But halfway it lost my interest. I would not reread this novel. Its not a bad novel. I would still recommend you to try reading it. <<less

Complete (100% read), Highly Recommended! I Cried For Like 70 Chapters Straight and then, when I thought we'd hit the Happy Ending Times, THERE WERE LIKE 60 MORE CHAPTERS TO CRY THROUGH. I thoroughly enjoyed every single character, especially my scheming son Zhao Zhao who is Everything To Me

Absolutely a fantastic example of its genre and well worth the read (and the headache you get from sobbing for 100+ chapters)

This novel was great! I’ve found myself binging on a lot of BL across a lot of genres the last few years. This novel is memorable in a sea of BL novels, and I remember why I love them again!! The story did probably go on a few events too long but I wasn’t ready to let go off the MC so it was ok with me. The translation was smooth and easy to read.

Very good, but I feel like the summary is a bit misleading. While the ML has lot of regrets regarding the MC, it's not really because of his previous disciple, but for misunderstanding the MC. I think the MC is very well done, he is understandable and to me very likeable, even if it doesn't come across as such at first. He isn't perfect by all means and has plenty of flaws. The ML is fine, a little bit typical cold and aloof master character, but I think he was... more>> executed well.

Now, for their romance... I think their relationship is well made and interesting, their dynamic works... It's just not really romantic? Like it feels like their feelings for each other turn romantic swiftly and without much build up. While there's some romantic/s*xual interest in the MC's part, the most the ML showcases is jealousy. I still think it's enjoyable and works, but the transition is a bit awkward.

Spoiler

The MC shows interest when he was just a young egg, and when he lost his memories and acted like a child. Other than that he just wants his Shifu to take care of him and exclusively love him, and it feels like a child wanting the attention of his parent, less like how a person would want romantic love. The ML mostly feels guilt and regret towards MC, although it's clear the MC is special to him. He's also jealous of the MC getting another shifu, but that's all the signs of possibly romantic feelings. They are very much a couple that are codependent and are somewhat obsessed with each other, but them transitioning into a romantic relationship from a platonic one seems like an excuse to be together forever without much scrutiny.

[collapse]

Their relationship plays into their master disciple dynamic heavily, so it might make some people uncomfortable.

Finally, I really like how the ML's 'white moonlight' and the MC's 'brother' (Si Nan) was handled. It has a mature feel to it. <<less
