Recently, Gu Fan, the president of Nirvana Games, once again ascended to legendary status due to a small bug in his new game. As a top-tier game designer in the industry, every game Gu Fan designs has a distinctive feature:

Initially, players find these games to be monotonous, boring, and purely frustrating—a waste of time. But once a significant bug is discovered, the gameplay transforms drastically, making it utterly captivating and impossible to put down!

This phenomenon has led players to a recurring debate: “Is this a bug or a game feature?”

In a recent interview, Gu Fan addressed this with a straight face:

“Hello everyone, I’m Gu Fan, a game designer. You can also call me by my English name: Fan Gu, or ‘Contrarian’.

“I want to clarify once again that these so-called ‘core gameplay mechanics’ were never part of our original design. They’re all bugs! But since the players love them, we decided not to fix them!”

The story is simple, it's follows Gu Fan (or as the translation puts him on occasion, Guo Fan.) As he gets given the literal boss from hell, Lilith a demon who wishes to use Gu Fan as her lead dev in a scheme to make tortuous titles to milk negative emotions from unsuspecting players. The curve ball is Gu Fan has a bit too much pride in his work and slips secret bugs that twist Lilith's terrible designs into true gems.

After reading a few of the author's works they all... more>> suffer from the same fault, they're all formulaic. This one even more so than 'Losing Money To Be A Tycoon', this isn't an issue if you're treating this as a nice little filler read but not something you should binge. This book is admittedly a bit easier to read than 'Tycoon' bar translation issues but at the general cost of weaker comedy. It does atleast help with some tension in having an antagonistic force in the form of Lillith to root against but even then it leaves a bit to be desired.

My main complaint about the series comes from it's translation. It's clearly AI. While the grammar is alright you can clearly see whatever translation software struggle with being consistent. Games will be constantly renamed, some characters will have their gender flipped, and most notably the company's name changes every other chapter. You can read around it and if you're used to proper MTL you could easily process it but it's just enough to turn a casual reader away.

3.7 stars if you like game novels or something light to read between updates of other series this is fine otherwise don't bother. <<less
