I love the cruelty of the gong towards the shou. He's so evil, but that's what makes this story so good. The shou is so pitiful. He's actually very strong, but weak when against the shou.

Realistically I'm not up for r*pe. Unforgivable in rl, but stories are stories and many people fantasize about crazy things. Just remember that your fantasies aren't morals, so keep em under control.

This was my first Chinese bl novel and boy was I in for a treat! This novel is NOT for the faint of heart nor is it a fluffy romance but hardcore with torture, sadism, and r*pe. If you want to read sweet romance then turn away now! Though if you like sadism/masochism or torture this is for you?.

I must admit I was thrown for some loops there. I liked it.

Should I be concerned if I find it wasn't phased by any of the s*x scenes? I have seen worse (not saying this is not graphic, I have just seen some shit).

So I just finished reading it a while ago and I am not gonna lie...i really hated both the main characters. The ML is a selfish, heartless, prideful, useless, (literally every bad word in the world) son of a b*tch. The MC has no damm self respect. The ML r*pes, tortures, humiliates (literally does all things bad) to the MC. Even in the end, he never apologized for his behaviour. The only thing ML has going for him is his beauty, other then that, there is literally nothing likeable about him. Also the MC is literally the dumbest person I have ever seen, dumber then the most useless and unlikeable shoujo manga heroine. He doesn't have even an ounce of self respect. Even after going through so many emotional and physical tortures, he still likes the ML. Why?? Just why? Because he is beautiful? Like aarrgghh...I honestly wanted to go inside the book and give the MC a tight slap to open his eyes. After going through so much torture for so long, the MC literally forgives the ML cause he kneels once.... once? I was like b*tch, you were treated like a f*cking dog, caged, r*ped, tortured, humiliated, beaten, hurt physicall/mentally/emotionally (need I go on...) and yet you forgave him cause he kneeled just once? once? uggh... like I can't even with the s*upid mc?

I don't even know how I finished this novel. I was literally crying after seeing the treatment the poor dumb MC was getting.

It had great reviews and is so popular so I thought I would like it. But my heart still aches so much after reading it. I have never hated a character more then the ML. These type of books just isn't for me. I still can't get over how cruel the ML was.

I might be biased because I'm greatly attached to this novel, firstly because I first saw/read its manhua version and after years of no updates I was so sad that I had read it like for god knows how many times ff then I saw it's novel version and I can't help the happines and then read it straight to the ending. Though until now I'm still looking forward to the manhua english trans update.

yes I love this novel but the endinf not so much, I mean I think Lu Cang forgave Jing so easily and the ending was a bit rushed imo.

also check out the account of that latest translator Luxuifer, I swear her fanfics are so nice that I almost forgot the MLs psychotic mind. <<less

You can actually skip this danmei, it's not worth it. I'm ok with SM but here it leaves a sour taste. The plot is very weak and chapter after chapter it's only boring ab*se with s*upid MC who can't even say anything except "you, you". I persevered because I thought finally we will get deeper psychological understanding of ML but nope. Half of second volume and still nothing, person with such pathological personality and there is no mention why Emperor is like that. I lost interest when author decided to... more>> make readers believe that MC

can ab*se verbally and physically Emperor in public. Even a bandit wouldn't be able to behave like this.

What an utter nonsense!

This novel doesn't contain any interesting histories or cultural informations, it's basically a low quality smut. <<less

I'm not surprised by the low rating for this novel, even if I don't think it's warranted. I think, in the grand scheme of imperial setting, male-concubine stories, this one is actually pretty realistic. Lu Cang/MC is relatable in the sense that he knows Jing/ML has only brought chaos and stress into his life, but that doesn't stop him from wanting to be with Jing. Also, it's not like Lu Cang doesn't attempt separation, it's just that every time he tries to leave, Jing brings him back... and Jing is... more>> a tyrannical emperor so there's not really much choice Lu Cang has...

The only thing I don't like is the author trying to inject 'love' into the story. I don't know if I would necessarily call what they have love -- it's more of a contented companionship with a heavily imbalanced power-dynamic in favor of Jing, but that's just my take on it.

I think a lot of the low ratings are due to this not ending in the typical 'happy-go-lucky' and whimsical manner a lot of other BLs set in this period do -- you're not going to find the ML getting rid of his harem or claiming the MC as his 'official consort' and giving him the biggest/closest inner palace or changing the law to have a male empress... but again, I think it adds to the realism of the story.

HHYL is also one of the few -- if not only -- stories in this trope, that touch on the topic of aging, legacy and procreation/children for the MC/bottom. The reality is that a lot of BL often revolves around young males, especially those set in imperial eras, where male consorts are often teenagers to very early 20's (like 21/ 22 max), and I liked how the story touched on Lu Cang's fear of what might happen to him when he turns 30 and that male lovers past 30 are rarely seen -- which is true even from a fictional perspective where most BL novels, manhua, manga, webtoons, etc., typically fall short of having anyone be older than 35... I also like how the novel touched on the fact that these 'Emperor/Concubine' relationships entirely remove the possibility of biological children for the bottom... there is a whole chapter that touches on this which was really good (and sad) -- I do wish they had gone a little deeper, but just seeing it being acknowledged for once was great.

There are some continuity issues in the novel, for example, Jing is stated as already having 5 kids (and 3 crown princes) in the early chapters/part one, but then at the end, they are celebrating the birth of his third son... also Lu Cang's starting age is not clear (it never really is in these things because of reasons...) but just based on my math, he likely starts his relationship with Jing closer to 18/19 than 20/21 which they try to imply at the end... these are minor things though.

To wrap up, I think it's worth a read if you can handle TRUE toxic relationships. This is not BJ Alex, this is true s*xual violence, manipulation and control... many instances of s*xual assault and s*xual humiliation occur. The ML is a horrible person and that's acknowledged by the MC too. The ML changes in some ways but it's not a full blown redemption, so if you require full-blown redemption arcs I would not recommend because you will not get that at all with HHYL. <<less

The ML is the most disgusting and horrible human being I've ever read about and I truly believe the MC only ended up 'loving' him because of Stockholm Syndrome.

Spoiler

Even to the end, the ML didn't stay faithful to the MC and had several more concubines and children. He was supposedly protecting the MC by doing this but it really further cements how toxic their relationship is. And I can't forgive how the ML treated the MC after he thought the MC mu*dered the ML's uncle (who the MC was a substitute for).

Disgusted. The amount of good reviews really scares me about humans sometimes. The whole novel is romantising r*pe and s*xual assault, using it as a plot device. It's not even once mentioned as a bad thing, and the rapist never even once apologises for his actions. I get that it's just fiction, but this is a romance novel. It's not kinky, it's horrible and non-consentual. This isn't realistic in any way, this guy's been blackmailed, ab*sed, sexually assaulted, r*ped, and almost mu*dered, yet still blushes like a schoolgirl in love.... more>> You cannot neutralise r*pe with pleasure.

The rapist is a selfish as*hole who only cares about himself. He treats others like his playthings. The victim hasn't done much. I get that he had women kidnapped but even that doesn't deserve this kind of punishment. How does he just forgive him like that? He goes from resenting him to alnost immediately admitting his feelings. It's unrealistic. <<less

The ML constantly r*pes the MC, tortures him, Humiliates him, brands him, and he never even apologizes, like, till the end of the book. All he did was spread his booty cheeks once and let the MC top him and that was apparently his show of affection. Damn

This book is such a narrative for 2016 although it came out earlier ??? It was just f*cked up. Out of all the danmei I've read (and I've read A LOT) this is easily my least favorite. I read it and I finished it but the whole time I was just like "WTF."

There's nothing else to say about this. IT was short, it was f*cked up and it was what it was. I give this one easily a one star. <<less

Welp at first I thought I'll like it since the idea is intersting. But inventually I found that this story is dumb. The uke was really dumb to fall in love with the emperor who was HIS RAPIST. Whotf is the person who fall in love with hmtheir rapist? And how the emperor punish him is dumb. Excuse me but can you please give me an excuse to r*pe someone as a punishment? And the moral of the emperor, r*pe his waifu as a punishment in public just wtf dude?... more>> But I respect the emperor for making rational decision at some things such as keeping his concubines, even tho he love a male. Welp you know in chinase history its normal for emperor has so many concubines, and he still have many concubines and only bed them once for keeping his loyalty to his uke. Being an emperor is hard, especially when you have someoene you really love with ur heart. Being Empress doesnt mean you have to be loved by ur emperor. Tbh the royal family in chinese just choose the best candidate to be a decent empress for born the emperor's heir. And the emperor here trying his best to be a good emperor (even tho he failed at some things lol) while being a good (welp its still rodiculous to call him a goo lover but whatever) lover keeping his beloved wife safe.

The story is rodiculous and hillarious at the same time. The fact that it was ridiculous, it makes it hillarious (for me) <<less

Although I just wrote the review, I actually read the novel few years back when I first started to get into BL. This novel is hard to forget *cough* and honestly I had enjoyed the novel. I, of course am not sadistic just because I enjoyed the novel.

What really caught my attention was Jing's character development. The fact that he went from playing with MC to begging him back. He is the Emperor, he can be as selfish, as narcissistic, and as cruel as he want (he actually still is)... more>> but the fact that he is willing to love one person (MC) just made me see him in a different light.

The negative reviews are warranted. This book is definetly not for everyone, and definetly not for new readers. I personally enjoyed it cause I like the tension in the relationship and seeing how it developed was pretty satisfying. <<less

I read this story a long time ago. I give 5 stars to increase the rating. Yes this story is not perfect but it's not so bad. Why rating 3, 2???

For me this is one of danmei stories that i've read that I still remember 'till now.

For danmei readers don't skip this story because of the bad rating.

Dear the next readers who found that this's story is okay, give good rating please.

Thanks to the author and the translators.

First of all, I made it through *pats own back*

I've read a lot of non-con/in*est etc all sorts of novels with these tags so I am not downrating this novel because of the tag warnings. I'm judging it solely from the story.

I wasn't able to give it a 3 star or higher as I find the plot really weak and forced. The characters crafting was not well done and I couldn't find myself visualizing their characters at all. They just felt meh to me. The timeline/plot was also all over... more>> the place and lacks development.

In the early part where the ML secretly dressed up as a lady to get into the bandit's den and punish them for capturing maidens into their den, I felt that it was still going okay. Then alright, the MC was infatuated with ML's godly beauty and in the end got r*ped as a punishment.

However after this the story went downhill, how every meeting was just r*pe, ab*se (warning for the weak hearted: it was very very very bad ab*se). And since every such danmei story features Stockholm syndrome, the MC has got to fall in love with the ML right? Tbh besides the ML's looks there's no redeeming points for the MC to fall in love with him.

Spoiler

MC escaped at one point and the reunion was not any better. He was just forcefully r*ped by the river and brought back to the palace. The timeline just skipped to the part where he was held for months as a duke, consistently providing entertainment to the ML. ML still treats him like tr*sh. Also the part where it was unveiled that ML previously r*ped his uncle too. I was like what the. So he treats MC like a spare tire.

[collapse]

So in the end, ML also needs to find out that he is truly in love with MC and the weak "crematorium" part came. I don't think ML was truly put through anything at all. I get it that an emperor does not bow down and apologise but he's not admitting his fault on the ab*se and everything was concluded abruptly.

I guess the reason I gave a two stars was also of the gentler ML and more mature MC towards the end, a couple of sweet talks but this was it. One of the most meh novels I've read to date. <<less

A truly terrible novel with spectacularly s*upid characters. I don't mind dark novels, but this novel never let me understand why on earth the MC come to care for the ML. Like clearly it's supposed to be stockholm syndrome and not a healthy relationship, but there is absolutely nothing about the ML that helped me understand why the MC would, even in an extremely twisted way, come to care for him. He's basically r*ped horribly throughout the entire story, each time with brutal injuries (dislocated jaws and bleeding an*s horribly)... more>> He should honestly be dead from it all. As for the ML? Completely insane, and and not in a fun way. He was also incredibly annoying. There's no growth in the characters, they're just completely static the whole way through. I couldn't even feel bad for the MC (who let's not forget is ALSO a rapist) I was just annoyed at him. And ultimately what was the point? It's not really a realistic depiction of an incredibly toxic, abusive relationships, but it's not escapist enough to be titillating. It's just there. It kind of feels like the author just went with things that would shock the audience but with no thought given to it. R*pe, r*pe, more r*pe, gore, torture, in*est, r*pe and then they're in love??? But not really?? I'd give this 0 stars if I could. <<less

Wish I could put 0 stars. I'll give one star as an art piece since it can be a social commentary on r*pe.

The entire Bible Black series has more plot and makes more sense than this novel.

Honestly, nothing good here. Gore, blood, that's about it. I almost feel sorry for the Shou who is originally also a rapist.

... more>> The Gong is a complete cannon fodder as*hole that deserves the full lingchi and has no redeemable qualities.

The ML is a play thing to the "love" interest.

Both are tr*sh. The ML is more redeemable than the LI.

If you like rapist sociopaths as lovers with 0 redemption and too much power, are into blood play and gore, etc., and mindless r*pe, so long as its not irl, I won't kink shame you, but this is prob your thing.

This guy is no Mo Ran or Fan Wushe.
