I'll be honest, this is a f*cked up story and I absolutely loved it. For those who like aggressive and exasperating stories, this is one of your best shots. Although I don't condone the behaviour that ML displays as a person, the story was enjoyable precisely because of it (to me) everything was mindf*ckery.

Both main characters have engrossing personalities. I was shocked to see the rating in 3s because I expected it to be nothing less than a 4 from how its written and paced and the general plot.

In general,... more>> this is just an imaginary story and interesting to many so don't shy away from the bad things you read about it, you may like it. Had I read the reviews first on NU, I wouldn't have started haha. Although if you do end up disliking because of violence, I'd understand. <<less

So, let me make it clear that I hate this novel. Going into it, I thought that it would be similar to 'War Prisoner' which, while it has problematic content (rape, torture, blackmail, mol*station, other things that shouldn't be in a loving relationship), also depicts some sort of relationship progression! WYX comes to admire Si Yu and the novel shows that WYX's love developing as well as budding admiration and love from Si Yu's side.

'Hua Hua You Long' is kidnap, r*pe, kidnap, r*pe, r*pe, STOCKHOLM SYNDROME, r*pe, in*est, threats... rinse... more>> and repeat. Even once Lu Cang 'falls in love' with Jing, that 'love' is really just different flavors of Stockholm Syndrome with a garnish of fearing for the safety of his brother-bandits. For instance, in chapter 9 when Lu Cang ponders his relationship with Jing, the readers are treated to Lu Cang's thoughts on his feelings for Jing:

"Even if he... suffered pain and humiliation underneath Jing, that man was as beautiful as a fairy and soon, his face was imprinted in Lu Cang's heart and his occasionally gentle caresses made Lu Cang finally fall".

Stockholm Syndrome is induced when the victim feels grateful towards the perpetrator for some kindness, either real or imagined. For instance, if the kidnapper r*pes the kidnapped victim, the victim may feel grateful that the kidnapper wears a cond*m each time. May feel grateful that the kidnapper doesn't kill them. May feel grateful that the kidnapper asks after a favorite food and procures it. This along with isolation of the victim fosters the development of traumatic bonding that is the hallmark of Stockholm Syndrome and which can help explain why so many people in violent relationships stay.

Lu Cang had no choice but to stay. He's poisoned and stays in a house in the Imperial City. He's stuck in a place from which he can't run because of Jing's superior martial arts skills. He tries to leave by participating in a tournament only to realize that the emperor who is hosting the tournament is his ab*ser. When Lu Cang wins their bet, Jing undermines it by forcing Lu Cang into the role of his personal guard. Refusing the emperor is treason.

Beyond the frankly abusive relationship depicted in this novel, I'm really, incredibly, severely squicked by the lack of lube. This quote is taken from chapter 10, when Jing chases after Lu Cang after realizing that he tortured Lu Cang for a crime Lu Cang did not commit, and after Jing realizes that Lu Cang is the one that he loves:

Jing still remained silent. He used his iron tongs like hands to grip Lu Cang’s ankles. A moment later, he forcefully pulled them open to both sides. Then he positioned himself to stand between Lu Cang’s thighs.

"Both thighs were spread to the utmost angle, it couldn’t be spread any further. Yet, Jing still hadn’t any considerations to stop his action. ---- The area between his thighs felt the pain of tearing apart. His private part, because of the excessive pulling action, had also been turning to a light pink color and spreaded [sic] out in front of Jing.

So painful...

Bursting out with the cry of pain, Lu Cang clearly felt the feeling of the old wound within his body cracked open again. Fresh blood was pouring out from his anus. Because Jing’s s*x organ blocked the exit way, the blood flowed towards the rectum. --- The pain was too painful to be endured by a man.

Lu Cang randomly writhed his body, the lower part of his body was like an off the shore fish, rocked and swayed for his life, in an attempt to throw off Jing’s suppression that clamped him down.

“No... Don’t....” Jing’s brutally thrusting in and ruthlessly taking out movements reduced Lu Cang to a nearly hysterical scream."

Truly a loving romp! coughbullshitcough

I think the highlight of this romantic rendezvous is when Jing tells Lu Cang, "Don’t blame me! You moved randomly like this, how can I possibly restraint myself". Yes, it's all Lu Cang's fault that his an*l fissures are hemorrhaging. Jing f*cked him so slowly and gently!

This is not a romantic story! This is a perfect example of an abusive relationship. <<less

Good novel, but...

The first volume was REAL. It did something that a lot of Chinese novels with the same basis don't (my opinion) do : accurate representations (somewhat) of r*pe. It's not the most deep of stories but at least you understand the humiliation and the pain of the protagonist.

The ML is a crazy obsessive sad*st who has no qualms about assaulting whoever attracts his attention and has no pity or consideration for the mental or physical well-being of that person. On the contrary, the more they are in pain... more>> the more he likes it.

I feel like the first volume could stand as a complete story. It would have been a more solid work in my opinion. It starts and ends as a tragedy for the protagonist.

Spoiler
[collapse]

The second volume is kind of milder. There's really no transition between the ML character from the first to the second. He's suddenly less violent, a little bit more caring, etc. And the MC and him are in a somewhat normal relationship, even if the violent temper of the emperor is still there from time to time (during s*x and when he wants to punish MC).

I was disappointed by the lack of psychologycal consequences of ML's past treatment of MC on their current relationship at the start of the second volume (just 6 months later).

However I liked how the 2nd volume discussed the future of the MC with this kind of relationship. He has no real standing, his position is kind of weird in front of the nobles. He has no real family, no descendents, no real power. Everything he has is the favour of the emperor.

The second volume ends on a happy not but it was all over blend. <<less

The sad part is that the r*pe isn't what made this horrible for me but it's everything after that. I hated that the uke grew to enjoy being r*ped and fell in love with the guy. I hated that he was introduced as a strong guy and I expected a strong uke and he, until the very end, never made use of his power. More like he was pushed around all the time. I hated that he, even in the manga (which is dropped btw) he was shown blushing and... more>> enjoying the s*x when he was r*ped. I hated that he could forgive the emperor after all the sh*t he put him through. The emperor even called him a good for nothing and said that he'll just have to settle for him and this was when the emperor went to get him back after realizing his mistake. So, you'd expect an apology but instead, it's violence when he hit him and then r*pe and verbal humiliation when he told him he'll just settle for him... I hate that the author didn't even allow Jing to suffer at any point. Just when Cang grew a spine and was going to leave him because he put down his brothers, the author went and messed it up by making him get imprisoned instead of Cang leaving and being cold and distant and never giving in again. I remember I nearly screamed when that happened. After I had almost given up on Cang ever getting some self-respect, that happened and I was so happy then in the next paragraph he got imprisoned and was almost executed...I hate that Jing thinks Cang shouldn't sleep with a woman and even tested him by letting him go.

Most of all, I hate that the end is so sad. The emperor continues to have s*x with multiple concubines, it was even said that the harem has more than 70 of them so Cang's present is filled with bitterness and sadness and even his future isn't looking any better seeing as the emperor will grow tired of him or he'll die a dog's death with no one to visit his grave or remember him. And let's not forget that if by chance Jing dies before Cang and even if he never abandoned him before death, he'll be treated like sh*t by everyone as the who*e who lost the thigh she was hugging and he won't be peaceful even if death seeing as the entire country knows about the affair. If Jing dies, their fear will disappear and they'll f*ck him up, that is if not one of Jing's sons f*cks him up first...

Sad, sad story with an idiot uke that should've grown a spine and got some self-respect from chapter one and an as*hole who sees no one but himself. This isn't even a romance story. It's 80% r*pe and 20% angst <<less

I spent one day to read this novel. Surprisingly, this story has only 21 chapters, when I'm used to novels with a hundred chapters or even more. So I thought that there would be nothing interesting and exciting in it, how could there be a plot in such a short story? But oh my god, starting from the first page I fell in love with it!

Spoiler

The fact that the emperor dressed in the woman to solve problems remembers me of the same scene in the Tian Guan Ci Fu novel. And it looks fun, however, the next part of the storyline makes me like "what the hell?!" (until this moment I didn't observe that this story is bl, tbh) Really, even I already understood they will f*ck tonight, I somewhy thought that Jing wouldn't be on the top. Again maybe its because the beginning of the story is similar to Tian Guan Ci Fu, but in the end, Jing was.

Further, the plot, relationships, and the characters' tempers become even more interesting! Just look at Lu Cang: he wants freedom because he is a proud eagle and leader of mountain bandits that used to be free mustangs (i dunno why but bandits life for me like mustangs, they go wherever they want and do what they want to), but can't escape from Jing because he needs antidote otherwise he becomes shameless madman who addicted to sex; after getting closer with Jing he falls in love with him and becomes a s*x toy for the emperor and then understood that have one-sided love - his love loves his uncle - and even got freedom and antidote, Lu Cang f*cked up (or it's better to say that Jing is too jealous).

So now is Jing: catching and f*cking Lu Cang he brought him back, making an emperors pet, and even when things become better - they can love each other - his love find the reason to worry about; after punishment Lu Cang he tried to reconciliation with him but f*cked up (it's Lu Cang was too angry on him). Then comes winter, and in their relationships too, but isn't it a great idea to make other people kneeling to please Lu Cang to come back and if he refuses, as a plan B, the emperor can kneel too (and cry for better result). Sure, and it works and happy end! And so on, and so on.

Later, when they become official lovers and Jing f*ck him softer, Lu Cang starts being afraid of what if they broke up. Of cause, it turns out in new misunderstandings. But after he had a chance to have wife and kid what he isn't allowed to, he truly realizes that love Jing and his own life as it is. What really good.

As I already said at the end of the story, Jing allowed Lu Cang to be on top, and I don't know why but I love this moment! No, I'm a liar cuz I know: emperor loves Lu Cang so much that can allow him to do such thing (only once, but still...) - that's what I love, the real love!

Also... This psychological drama has mature themes, physical and s*xual ab*se what I'm often not enjoyed, but in this story I adore it!

Well... Do you remember the last words of the epilogue, it's "only happiness" and after reading this I feel only this.

It’s a very yaoi plot set up, lots of unrealistically unsafe s*x, but the ending makes up for it, somehow. Honestly not sure how to feel about it, but read through the whole thing and was entertained.

ML is the emperor, super hot, super arrogant, super into MC, the mountain bandit who is like a blushing virg*n in comparison. RUN...

I clearly only read the first volume... I clearly have an above-average power of resisting tragedy-novel's ab*se... but I still underestimated this one... I was still psychologically... f*cked, way harder than our poor MC. (xD actually... it was not even funny)

If you still want to preserve your heart, RUN as far as you can from this novel... if you are a pure masochist like myself, I dare you to struggle from the 8th chapter unmoved...

With all this, I shall conclude: ehm... I LOOOOOOOVED this novel. Il clearly doesn't deserve... more>> this low rating... It should be at least 4.5/5. This was one of the more memorable BL novels. That said, this novel is not for everyone - or most people for that matter. There are heavy S/M and r*pe scenes that can be off-putting to many audiences. I personally found them to be a bit over the top and extremely uncomfortable at times.

However, the novel itself is well written and interesting. The characters are pretty unique in that the MC has the build of of a typical Gong but is actually the Shou. However, as typical Chinese... more>> BL novel go, the Shou is a bit whiny and has no spine. However, as far as personalities go, it's a lot better than most novels in its genre.

I gave an extra star to this novel because the characters actually switch positions. I find it unrealistic in BL that 2 men who are married to each other would have predefined roles and never switch. Their personalities and the slowly learned willingness to accommodate each other is definitely a big plus. Another core reasons this novel is outstanding is because the translation quality of this novel is phenomenal. Unlike most BL novel translations where the translator either uses MTL as a crutch or have no prior knowledge of Chinese culture, the translators of this novel are well versed in both English and Chinese. They also have written several FF for this novel, so their English writing is relatively refined. <<less

I'm pretty sure that this "love" that the MC has for the ML is like Stockholm Syndrome. He's unable to return to his home and friends because of the poison inflicted on him by the ML, ends up staying at the ML's place because of lack of money, then tricked again to be forced to be at the ML's side as a guard. Throughout this he's brutally r*ped over and over again. The MC even realizes this once he sees the ML raping his uncle, that the MC's own "love" was a coping mechanism for all of the r*pe.

It is a hate it or love it type chinese novel. Stay away if you don't, I emphasize, DON'T LIKE r*pe, violence, torture, and stockholm syndrome. If you read this hoping that 'it gets better', then stop. It DOES NOT get better. At all.

I was put off at first because of the warning. I tried to read it, but it was too hardcore for me. But, I was really curious and the reviews encouraged me to go on. I ended up loving it so much! It brought me to thousands... more>> of feels. I can't even remember how much I cried my eyes off just because of this novel, with mere two volumes.

Spoiler

I fell in love with Lu Cang. How he keeps his love for Jing and even withstanding all mockery--and torture--just to be with Jing made me fell for him. Hard.

I cried so much for a whole day because I sympathize with him and feel his pain ;_;

I personally think that Lu Cang is too good for Jing. But the way Jing begs Lu Cang to come back for him--kneeling in front of people and his own soldiers--moved me the most.

[collapse]

I rate this 4/5 because it is still not enough. I finished reading it and felt that it was too short!

Spoiler

the lovey-dovey moment is not enough! I mean... come on! Lu Cang endures all the tortures which were explained to the very details, but the sweet moment between him and Jing was too short. I need more!

This is one of those stories that you either love it or you hate it. The guy that MC loves is beautiful, powerful, and charismatic. Yet at the same time he is also sadistic, cruel, and inhumane. Reading this you will feel like the MC, you love him yet you hate him at the same time.

I approached this book with cautious optimism. I read the tags and reviews and thought, 'Maybe despite all the trigger warnings, it might have a compelling plot to balance it out.' Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The story fell flat for me, even when I tried to overlook the excessive non-consensual elements. Beyond those, there just wasn’t anything engaging or meaningful about the plot. The story lacked depth or originality. I’m genuinely baffled by the glowing 5-star reviews
