I Am A Matchmaker on Taobao

After waking up from a car accident, not only was I alive, I had also gained a new ability. If I stare at someone or a photo for three seconds, I’m able to see whom and when they shall marry…

The 18th tier small-time actor Shen Chuchu knew that with this skill, her mother would never have to worry that she will starve to death again.

She would put down her roots on Weibo first, then open a matchmaking store on Taobao.*

“Your husband is a close friend and you will be married in March next year. You will have a happy marriage.”

“Your husband will appear at your company’s dessert store soon, so remember to keep a close watch every day.”

……

*Note: Weibo is a popular social media app in China with functions similar to Twitter. Taobao is basically the Chinese eBay/Amazon.

A certain amateur celebrity is already married?

A certain director’s wife is going to have an accident soon?

One day, someone came to her for matchmaking.

“Sorry, lady. Fortune-telling requires fate, and it seems like we don’t have that between us.”

“Isn’t this just about money? As long as you can figure out my son’s marriage, I can pay you tenfold. No matter how much!”

F***ing hell, it wasn’t that she wouldn’t predict the match. The arrogant CEO’s future spouse was actually her.

Had to stop at chapter 10. I usually like OP protagonists but this was a little bit too Mary Sue in the bad way. Everybody lacks logic to make the MC/ML look better.

In this chapter ... more>>
Spoiler

MC gets into an argument with an extra (female president under ML CEO who likes the ML and dislikes the MC because she thinks MC got an ad due to unspoken rules with ML). The extra is older. The MC's response to the extra's bullying is literally "you hate me because I'm young and beautiful." After the ML tells the extra to apologize to the MC, the extra (who is a president of the company!!!!) cried and then quits because she doesn't want to apologize???? This is a middle aged female executive in Asia who is not a chaebol and made it as president of the largest company in China. She is either a workaholic overachieving tank or a two faced shark with killer people instincts (maybe even both) but either way not someone that cries and then immediately quits? I would have expected her to have apologized with a smile and then tries shady tactics later.

Also agree with previous reviewer that it was messed up that MC revealing the director's mistresses's bad info (she had plastic surgery, slept with lots if men) actually improved the director's marriage with his rich backer wife.

The mistress and the agent were also the type of brainless that is unbelievable.

3.5 lol I was waiting patiently for the translations for a year until yesterday. Then I was like f*ck it I'll mtl. Haha.

I still think there is some worth waiting if you're not too attached and you don't have the time to mtl. It's probably more enjoyable to read the translations anyways.

There's nothing particularly too offensive nor special but I think it's still fun and exciting how she using her marriage powers to help all her costars. They make for interesting stories, more so than the romance ngl.

The ML is... more>> the neither the best nor bad, just above average basic bit*h ceo ML (ngl I almost rolled my eyes to my grave and dropped dead when he did that basic bit*h ceo line of I don't want to see you do an intimate scenes but he does end up supportive of her career and even push an unlikely script towards her/ oh but his family is pretty basic bit*h give me a baby but it helps both families are nice and no drama).

The MC is refreshing as a clear voice and quite a cautious character. She's not perfect nor unbelievably likeable but she's also not boring so I think my rating is on point.

To end, I think this is still enjoyable for what it is. <<less

The system is present in the first twenty or so chapters, but this is not really a system novel- the system isn't really mentioned from chapter 20-48 other than the MC using it to view other people's info. There are frequent time skips of days at a time, and one point a three month time skip. The romance between the MC and the CEO feels forced.

Sigh.

I really liked this premise but ultimately the execution falls flat; I'm pretty sure it was intentionally done but the pacing feels slow and I... more>> find myself not caring much about any of the characters. I really love the type of 'fortune telling powers' novels but here it feels like it's really underplayed- she has a quota of 11 people every day but after the first day we literally don't hear about any of them. The system is more like a crutch to allow the MC to have an ability/gimmick/avenue to one-up other people, than being the focus of the novel, which is why I don't really consider this a system novel even though a system is 'supposed' to play an important role.

Maybe this gets better over time but I wouldn't know because it's only translated up to chapter 48. Frankly I'm disappointed at the translator 'plumlizi' - the translator for some reason is translating 5+ novels at once resulting in each chapter being a month apart. Like why? Just translate one, get it done then do the others. It's like painting all of your rooms in your house at the same time but rather than focusing on one room, you do a bit in each room. Imagine how long it'd take before you can even move into any rooms to live inside the house!

Going to try to find some more 'fortune telling in modern era' novels and steer as clear from 'plumlizi' as I can by not reading any novels they're involved in translating. <<less

I'll give it a 3. But I don't think people who gave a higher score are weird, nor people who gave a lower score are being unjust. It depends on what aspect you are evaluating this story.

If you want to evaluate from the sweet romance, interactions between FL/ML and some of the supporting family cast... its quite sweet and fast paced. And I found it entertaining enough to finish this story in a sit.

Spoiler

I liked that they emphasized her hard work instead of having the gold-finger that was supposed to be the system give her 'acting skills'. Yes, there were strokes of luck, but everytime she has to work herself to get them or keep them.

I also liked that ML didn't just sleep with her when she was drugged and went with the "I'm trying to help you with your intoxication" kind of explanation. He last-minute ruled in his desires and properly pursued her.

His jealousy is also within bounds. And that's a plus when we have Boss/President MLs.

[collapse]

But I want to talk about somethings I found lacking, and it is directly related to the title of this story:

Spoiler

I support the people who voiced their disappointment with the matchmaking system. But it wasn't because the idea was bad, but it was because the system's development was lacking, and the author often forgot to mention the repercussions the FL was supposed to face everytime she went against the system's prerrogative.

Instead of saying a system is bad, or good... it would be better to have a reason for it to exist in the first place. For example, if I substituted the system for an informant like Red Feather (being her close friend or owing her one), it wouldn't change the story.

What is the reason for Yue Lao to use MC to help increase marriage rates and decrease divorce rates if either the couple who's going to marry was going to marry even without MC interfering or if destroying a bad marriage makes her lose points?

This system would work if went one of the ways:

  1. Issued quests or side quests for MC to complete (some obligatory)
  2. Didn't help as much, but alerted her everytime a couple that is supposed to be together for some reason went separate ways and she has to find a way to pull them back together.

Like this, the system would be much more relevant, just like when she saved director Chang's Wife. It changed their future, and I think its a good way to apply the system.

[collapse]

And I don't know if this happened because of this previously mentioned flaw in the plot, but...

Spoiler

Except when she took her vengeance on some people, MC seems to always be very unsure or confused about how she should deal with the info she gets from the system. Again, that's why this system isn't so useful. She needs more punishments, rewards or a direction in order to be more sure of what to do.

[collapse]

Overall, I recommend this story for people who want to read something lighthearted. There are no major ups and downs, the most distressing is MC's indecision at some points and that's it. Its a solid 3. <<less

I reading the raw using google translate because it is a really nice novel.

The story is flowing nice and also interesting to follow.

I really love how the MC is stay clear of her principle and how she help many people in the journey of her story.

... more>> The only aspect that lack is the use of system itself.

It feels like the system is quite important but also become a figurant.

Especially when reaching the end of story.

You may feel as if the author change the concept of the novel.

Because neither the system or the secret weibo or Yue Lao's mission ever explained the continuation.

Basically it is a full romance story with and adds-on of system that can be said important but also unimportant.

Well recommended if you like to read an easy to understands and nice romance novel. <<less

I really love this series! I think the flow of the plot and relationship within the story overall is good although the system is not actually heavily used near the end.

  • I like how independent and smart the MC
  • The relationship between ML and MC is not so abrupt at the start y'know things like suddenly this domineering CEO love MC at the first sight
  • The feelings between MC and ML is growing steadily and warmly ><
  • I like how respectful ML of MC opinion and her wishes and doesn't doubt her
  • Not unnecessary drama or misunderstanding, well only tiny bit as a stepping stone in their relationship
  • The time flow and time skip is so subtle and easy to follow
This is not that heavy kind of novel with strong plot, so if you looking for... more>> one, this is not for you. This is just heartwarming and light kind of romance novel and yes, the plot is very light with no strong rival or that heavy drama, but that is the selling point of this series. Some novels that I've read is really abrupt and corny and one in particular just full of time-skip and the relationship between MC and ML just so-so, but here in this novel, you can see that their relationship is growing from strangers to acquaintance and moving to friendship and finally loving relationship.

Anyway, this might be my biased review for this novel cuz I always love independent MC but overall, this novel is not that bad :) <<less

Not a bad novel. Until now the Male Lead is actually a gentleman, he's a nice man and treats MC well. Let's see if he'll be like that until the end.

if you are looking for a light reading, this novel is absolutely should in your list.

this novel has everything in romance story: beautiful FL, handsome ML, Fluffy and sweet romance. Long story short, FL almost hit by the car (of course it was a ML), but they were not suddenly become girlfriend boyfriend relationship. It takes times and effort mostly from ML. What I like in this story is that you won’t find villains that stuck in the story for long, it solved quickly either with helping from ML or... more>> by FL herself.

and this is one of story that easy to MTL, at least I didn’t get lost while doing MTL <<less

our female lead is purely beautiful with brains. She knows how to use the system correctly and in what way to convey it to the respective people. What I like in this book is that although the system gives her points in acting, she had to work hard in acting to achieve it (when you read, you will understand what I mean). Also, very importantly, she knows she had created backing in the entertainment industry, yet she didn't take advantage of it.

Our male lead, what I love about him is... more>> that, like other typical male leads in other Chinese novels, he can take a chance to do stuff with FL, but he has his consciousness and doesn't go further. Plus, he is so cute and adorable. Plus, his jealousy...

They are a very healthy couple, with no unnecessary fights.

Shen Chu Chu + Han Xingyan = Hotpot. <<less

I liked it, it is an easy read, with a love relationship that develops very well, it is not insta love and I loved it. The ML is taciturn but cute as he is a little unexperienced in love related affairs. FL is a little bit lost at the begging, related to almost every aspect of her life but you come to see how she builds her life little by little.

Only downside is the rushed ending with no extras but the author closes all the storyline somehow.

I really liked the story, FL is slow and steady, just minds her work and strives forward to improve. This mind set is absent in many of the stories, but in reality women should earn and pursue their dreams. I recommend reading this novel, it’s good one.

It's wasn't one of those novels that leave you with awe and reverence. But I still enjoyed reading it immensely, even shed a tear or two at times.

The premise is just so fascinating where the FL can see the marriage fate of others and helps them. Yet, she is not just a bystander in other people's lives, she lives her own life freely and fully.

Shen Chuchu's character may seem average but I liked it very much. She knew when to advance and when to retreat. She accepted her flaws and... more>> was totally okay with it and even improving upon it as much as she could.

Han Xingyan, the ML, is considerately for more generic CEO character. However, he was awkwardly cute and very much doting towards Chuchu. He was NOT an a-hole, but a perfect gentleman. He never let his jealousy and possessiveness hold his girlfriend back from her acting career. He wholeheartedly supported her in everything and did not meddle in her affairs without her permission, letting her deal with it on her own. Basically treating her as his equal which many Chinese overbearing CEOs somehow forget to do.

Both of their relationship can be summed up in one word- (clumsily) adorable!

There were also so many couples that we came across. Good and bad, both. Some had messy private lives, some were s*umbags and cheaters.

However, the best thing were the couples that ultimately got together and lived in conjugal bliss. I even cried a little cause it was too sweet for me to handle.

One time, the FL predicts the first encounter between her client and her future husband at a Cafe and she goes there to witness it firsthand. There, both bump into each other at the last minute and they can be seen tugging at each other among the bustling crowd of the mall, through the glass window. This particular moment was a highlight for me. As it portrayed how a seemingly insignificant meeting like this sparks the future journey of soulmates. It was too romantic for me not to add this here.

Overall, a great bingeworthy entertainment industry trope novel. Nothing too awe-inspiring or anything. But still a solid one! <<less

Concept is interesting and fun. Overall a nice story that doesn't have a lot of annoying toxic commentary from netizens and doesn't drag stuff out too much.

At this point I don't have a lot of expectations from Cnovels, just, don't be too much filler or toxic. (Lol)

I like that MC focuses a lot on her career and her system and less on love in the beginning.

Spoiler

I have mixed feelings about a "marriage system" that takes points away if people who aren't suited for each other not marry, but okay (eg. MC helped ppl who didn't work well together not get married and instead of gaining points for making someone a lot happier than they would've been, lost points).

Also, the main character's marriage system is a little too OP. Even though the author takes steps to make it feel less deterministic (some people do change their minds after influence which changes the marriage system accordingly), it still felt a bit too much like fate. It's not like a matchmaking system where the MC can see their compatibility, it will literally show someone's marriages or divorces in their entire lifetime including 3rd marriages 20 years in the future.

[collapse]

Also ML is seriously hilarious and very bad at "chasing" people.

Overall great translation, appreciate it from plumlizi and Little Lady's Dollhouse. <<less

I agree with fellow reviewers, the premise is very interesting however sadly the execution falls short. I'm somewhat conflicted about the rating because to be honest this is a good read, it just feels lacking taking in account its potential and high expectations caused by the matchmaking theme. As usual in CN novels, this novel has great ideas that somehow end up reduced to neglected plot devices. It's pretty nice if you feel like reading something without ups and downs.

The plot and characters are okay, however they feel kind of... more>> plain. There's nothing really outstanding or special. There's little to none emotional involvement with the characters (maybe because the FL is never actually in a truly troubling situation since she met the ML) and both the ML and other characters are just there... we don't really get to know them. I think it's a shame the focus was on her career instead of the matchmaking but I admittedly like the lack of cat fights and drama involved.

The ML is okay, I appreciate the fact he's not the cold, arrogant CEO usually seen. He does share some tropes but he's more toned down. I liked the fact he actually respected her and he properly courted her.

Maybe I'll edit this later when the translation is over to check if the plot holes were my own misunderstanding because of the MTL, for now I noticed these ones:

Spoiler

-When ML sent his employee to compensate MC for the car situation, he seemed worried about her noticing or knowing something. It hinted to the ML having a secret related to their first meeting yet this was never mentioned again. It makes me wonder if I thought too much or it was related to an idea dropped later on the plot.

-The matchmaking system is really neglected. We never really find out the ins and outs of it. MC lost points for saving her future manager from marrying a mercenary fresh meat yet she gained points later on even when she prevented other unhappy marriages? there's no clear distinction to know the rules in this matter. Also, I didn't find a part when MC checked her own marriage star rating, I assume it's a 5 star since she's the protagonist but it did seem strange the author was so casual about that part. Will she have the system forever? What will happen when her acting skill is maxed out? Did she ever tell the ML about her skills?

A lighthearted comedy so far... romance, what's that?

The ML always appears in time to SAVE THE DAY... with cartoon-like punctuality. I'm sure it's supposed to be dramatic and romantic, but I'm laughing my ass off. 😄 Until chapter 60, the ML feels more like a plot device than a real character. *random male gets close to FL.* *puff, a wild CEO Han appears & scares them away* *Han Xingyan and Shen Chuchu exchange less than 100 words* *puff, CEO Han disappears* like Tuxedo Kamen, in and out in under 30... more>> secs. 😉

The FL doesn't have a lot going for her, but she's hard-working and very self-aware. 🙃 She's not a character that gets dumbed down for plot reasons once in a while, neither is she a hailed as smart but badly written. She's just... not that bright. And aware of it.

"Ah, I was not strange but very dumb. I unexpectedly passed the university entrance exam but what I didn't expect was that it was the beginning of a nightmare. [...] Everyone else passed their university time with food and fun while I continuously had to resit exams on top of a mountain of books and question papers"

That's very refreshing.

If you like the author's writing style, I recommend reading some of their other works, which feel more polished.

I'll update my review after finishing the novel but one of the translator's comments was so funny (after this pandemic) that I had to post it here. It's like a meme.

Before 2020:

"On the third day at ten, Shen Chuchu went out wearing a mouth mask*, hat and sunglasses.

*TL-note: Also known as a surgical mask, it is intended to be worn by health professionals during surgery and during nursing to catch the bacteria shed in liquid droplets and aerosols from the wearer's mouth and nose."

After 2020, most adults:

"Ok, so should I get ffp2 or quilter's cotton?" <<less
