I Became The Stepmother of My Ex-husband

Description

Lin Wei Xi found out after she died that she was just a cannon fodder in a novel, used as contrast to the gentle and considerate and virtuous female lead.

The male lead was her ex-husband, the dignified heir of Yan Wang, his family were superior and brilliant, but the female lead was not her.

The female lead was her concubine-born younger sister, and her husband’s white moonlight, his cinnabar mole, no wonder! After Lin Wei Xi died, her husband finally married her sister as he wished.

She watched coldly at the two like honey in the oil, in love and harmonious, everyone using the success of her younger sister to contrast the impropriety of the original wife.

Lin Wei Xi sneered, okay, since your love moves the world, then this sister will come back and be your stepmother!

So she married her ex-husband’s father, the father-in-law she never met in the previous life, the country’s God of war, who has not remarried after losing his wife, the one that hold military power, the brilliant Yan Wang.

Later Yan Wang, who was in his prime years and used to act decisively, looked at his small, delicate, much younger wife, and had a headache.

No matter, she is still young, he have to spoil her, indulge her, teach her.

I read this novel twice, and I think I could read a third one, it's really good, and after I discovered that the autor has more novels, I'm really glad.

If u like historical romance, and strength characters, just read this, it's worth!

I don't have much to say expect a big thank you to both translators that took their time to translate this novel, especially The Seat Is Bored. Because transiting a novel in six months and leaving it accessible for anyone to read for free is something so rare that I can't help but comment my gratitude

The novel was enjoyable. I dare say it's one of my favourite historical non-martial arts Chinese novels. It felt really balanced. There novel isn't perfect for sure or even the characters, but that's the beauty... more>> of it. All the major characters were flawed but not enough to not tolerate (like we all are)

This is a good recommendation to anyone who enjoys second chances <<less

So far (c 7), the story isn't bad at all, not much has happened except for a few interactions between the FL and ml, which is why im here right now.

Spoiler

As I said, not far into the story at all, and I can appreciate the mc's character a bit. I like how the author has kept it realistic in the sense that the MC after being reincarnated into lin girl actually dedicated herself to being lin and not just acting like the old xi. The next thing I have to say though is more of a complaint, im not sure if it's because the mc's slight familiarity with her father in law, but she is behaving quite entitled towards him (and he allows it) which to me doesn't make much sense because the ML doesn't seem to be a person who would let a girl get away with half of the stuff she's said so far. Still, it may be because of the ml's feeling of obligation towards his friends daughter.

[collapse]

But I guess I can appreciate the author's efforts to not make our MC perfect, and instead giving her what are- in my opinion- flaws.

*Edited*

I was wrong. I was going to delete my earlier statement but who'd it hurt to see the thought process? Anyways, I liked where the story was going but was a little peeved about how the FL was interacting with the ML in the beginning, thinking it was one of those books that were unrealistic in the mary sue sense, where the MC would be able to get away with anything because she's the protag but no, the author addressed this multiple times in the book later on. That in and of itself is so gratifying, not only did the author bring to light the way the FL behaved but it was a good enough reason as well.

I might be biased too, but I really liked the way the mc's relationship progressed. It was slightly unbelievable in some parts but compared to the "I don't talk, I loved you from the start, woman be mine" unfeeling and one dimensional kind of ml, I think Yan Wang was human enough.

The story line was interesting enough to keep me reading the whole thing, though it wasn't without it's flaws. As you can see, most of what I said was it was good enough. Overall, I give this book a solid 7.9/10 <<less

First, this story is a slow romance. However, the slowness is only in admitting their feelings. From very early on in the story, it was easy for the reader to see the feelings of the ML and FL.

Second, I liked the politics. The politics were handled subtly but the tension was always there throughout the story.

Third, I liked that the ML and FL were true ancient people. The author did not allow their modern thoughts to affect the perception of characters who were supposed to be ancient. It was well... more>> done.

Overall, the story is worth reading. <<less

Loved it. Unexpectedly realistic faulty/human characters. Not all is black and white.

The main couple communicates! Not always to perfection but this story is mostly free of unnecessarily misunderstandings.

5/5 no regrets reading till the end

This writing style in these kinds of novels bothers me. First, the book gives you a family tree that you’ll never care about, then all the past relationships these people have and then when you finally come to the conversation part they are only one sentence and the rest is that one sentence’s explanation... I DON'T HAVE THAT KINDA PATIENCE.

When ML appeared from far 28 long paragraphs followed his name before the chapter end. Bruh. Can we move on?

10 long chapters out of 62, FL still didn’t interact with ML.... more>> Dropped.

I feel like this story is not for me but I can’t stop myself to give this a low score. <<less

This exceeded my expectations. Previously read a novel with a similar premise (It's better to be the Empress Dowager, which I just realized is from the same author), but this one is way better in terms of story development and logical flow (despite transmigration being a fantasy theme) for me.

I originally thought that the FL's nemesis (aka novel's "protagonist") was finally a formidable opponent, a good ... more>>

, but I was still quite disappointed with how she ended up. The story featured different character POVs, which greatly helped me as a reader in understanding the thought process that led to their actions. Also kinda surprised at how much regret was present in a number of characters here, but there is very little redemption arc for them.

FL is ok, meets what I would expect as a female lead, sometimes quite annoyingly foolhardy and childish that it seems a little out of character. Not OP but capable enough because of her background. There are also a few more childish main characters parading as young adults here. ML equally shines in this novel, who made quite a number of mistakes that shaped how things turned out the way they were but have found the motivation to fight to change things. I found it hard to empathize with the second ML up till the end- because how he ended showed how little he has matured.
Spoiler

It's not that he fell in love with FL, they didn't have enough time and interactions for that. It's more that he was unable to move on from the possibility/idea of falling in love with FL in the past, and decided to torment himself multiple times throughout his life. So now, he may never escape the love-of-a-lifetime-that-got-away syndrome.

[collapse]
. And I don't wanna start with that "protagonist FL" of that heavenly book, I think she has been well outlined in the story.

So yeah, it is a good quick read for this genre, and maybe I'll find some more similar stories like this moving forward. <<less

I quite enjoyed this novel. It adds a slightly interesting twist to some pre-established tropes, but the story doesn't take itself to seriously. It moves along at a nice pace and it's to overly complicated.

What I found fun, was the reincarnated? Vs the transmigrator. Both the protag and the antagonist are aware that they're in a novel. The transmigrator doesn't know the contents of the book though, she only knows "she's the protagonist". Our MC, is aware that the world is a book. At the very least, she has gained knowledge of past and future events. By reading the "book" near the beginning of the novel.

[collapse]

What I also like, is the way the novel plays with cause and effect. But doesn't necessarily point it out to you, just hinting at it sometimes.

Spoiler

A really nice example. Would be Lin father going to the capital with his daughter to try and find work. Only for his daughter to get ill, so he stood on the side of the street to beg. He inadvertently drew the attention of Gao Xi (her name before her death). Gao Xi, seeing the father daughter pair, melt remorseful seeing there good relationship. She didn't have a good relationship with her father. So she gave him 20 taels of silver. He took that money, got his daughter medicine, set her up with her aunt and then went to join Prince Yan's army (our future ML). Fighting for 6 yrs on the battlefield, he exhausted his life to save Prince Yan. When his daughter found out, even though she was conferred titles, lands and money, she knew she'd never see it. So she decided to leave with her father, leaving her body behind for Gao Xi to wake up in. As thanks for saving her life all those years ago. This inexplicable connection, is also what brings the two love interests initially together.

[collapse]

The entire book is kind of like this. It flows very smoothly and when one event happens, it could end up being connected to tons of other smaller or bigger events. I also really enjoyed the ending, I was actually quite satified with the antagonists ending. Though I've read a few reviews say they were slightly disastified, because the son didn't really get punished much. I kind of disagree.

Spoiler

When the antagonist realizes in her madness, that Lin Xi is Gao Xi reborn. They confront eachother in private with no one around. This, conversation is later eluded to be heard by Prince Yan. It's at this point in the story, we realize, he also knows who Lin Xi is. Because he goes back, and makes sure she can never tell anyone the truth in the future. It's also made obvious, that Gao Xi's ex-husband has also figured it out some time ago. He also realizes, he's f*cked up. He actually loved Gao Xi but didn't appreciate her, so he lost her and lost everything that should have been his. It's very unlikely he'll inherit, or even marry again. We also find out, he never actually loved the antagonist in the first place. He has to live with the knowledge, that his decisions drove two women to death because of his own s*upidity. Our end scenes describe his life as extremely mediocre, he is destined to fade into the background from now and never rise again.

[collapse]

All in all, the story is really great and I loved the romance too. Even though there is a large age gap, it doesn't seem to off putting for some reason and it may be because she comes across to much more mature than anyone else in the story. <<less

Body Swap! The FL, Gao Xi, died of illness after being mistreated by her husband. If that's not enough, just after she wakes up in a new body (the body of a girl named Lin WeiXi), she finds out from a dream that her whole life was a book in which her younger Shu-sister, Gao Ran, was the transmigrated protagonist. As the protagonist of her novel, Gao Ran stepped on the FL and ended up becoming the second wife of the FL's husband. For her second chance at life, the... more>> FL doesn't have great aspirations, but because of her new body's past, her road ends up becoming entangled with Prince Yan, her ex-husband's father. So, only a couple months after she had officially died, she ends up back in the same home with her ex and her sister.

The story is mostly drama and character exploration. I don't really like the FL that much, her personality doesn't suit the era and it makes everything feel unrealistic when everyone fawns over her being

well, shrew-ish. I found the premise of her being the stepmother of her ex most interesting, but that's actually not explored in detail, and her romance with the ML, Prince Yan, is pretty so-so. It's that typical story where the wild FL ends up being the apple of the stoic and righteous ML's eye.

If you're interested in this kind of simple drama, I still think it's worth the read. I just wasn't overly interested in the characters and ended up dropping it mid-way. But I'm already considering rereading it one day, though not anytime soon. For the TL, since there are two versions:

  • OLD: The old TL uses more Pinyin, so if you're more comfortable with it, then you shouldn't have too hard of a time comprehending the novel, though it's not the cleanest in terms of grammar.
  • NEW: The new TL from Moon Jellyfish is the one I read, this one westernized some of the more complicated titles and explains a lot of what's going on in the beginning to improve comprehension. It's very clean and what I'd personally recommend.
Warning: This novel features a 16yo FL and an over 30 ML. This is quite normal for the time period and nothing is actually explicitly written (it's fade-to-black and doesn't even feature kisses!), but I thought it best to say it here. Other than that, there's the usual warnings for this era where women are considered inferior.

RATING: 3.35/5

It's not my favorite, but despite me not really liking the characters and the occasional inconsistencies, it's not too bad. I liked it mostly for the initial premise, and am already looking for similar novels to pick up lolol. <<less

I personally liked this kind of trope, where MC was transmigrated as supporting role and instead of getting back with their initial ML, the goes for their father/step-father hahaha. Anyone would also enjoy “Greeting, Ninth Uncle” or “It’s Better to be Empress Dowager” if you enjoy this story.

In a way, it’s very fluff / non-sensical novel on the way YW spoilt her which I don’t mind. 4 stars because I like how the actual story played out, and enjoyed the pictures and scenes the author painted with her words. I like this author’s stories a lot, even though the plot tends to be similar (But I like her plots so that’s a plus point for me). Despite liking this story so much and immensely enjoying the time I spent reading it, I’m taking of a huge star in the ratings to be fair.

One reason is ... more>>
Spoiler

she transmigrated into someone else. I feel like Gao Xi didn’t get any retribution’s or any regrets from anyone. I would have liked it better if she reincarnates as herself, stopped the engagement with the original ML, somehow encountered the current ML, and the story took off from there. However, that would have been a different story than what we got.

[collapse]
So this one is a personal reason.

The real reason for my 4 stars is: I dislike the FL, ML, and the antagonists.

Haha. Yes, I dislike the main couple. They were very good together and I enjoyed all the dog food they threw, but as people, I dislike them. What I liked though, was that the author depicted their flaws but never stated their flaws so the reader can interpret for themselves. Most readers love the ML, but I don’t.

Spoilers ahead... Let’s do FL first.

I dislike her character because

Spoiler

1) her golden finger is too much. Everyone falls in love with her, for example,

Spoiler

her grandmother accepts her new body instantly and without question and instantly transfers all the wealth to her upon meeting her.

[collapse]

2) She’s very childish, which I can accept but sometimes she’s unreasonably childish.

3) I can’t fully accept (2) because as GAO Xi, she was ‘strict with herself’, yet she’s reborn as another woman and had a swift personality change.

4) She never got retribution for her past life. She seems to have swept that under the rug. The other characters quickly forgot Gao Xi and acted with the norm of the time - a woman died wrongfully but so what? She’s just a useless, unimportant woman, no great loss. Just forget it. However, I didn’t expect Gao Xi’s reborn self to think the same about past Gao Xi.

5) She helped her maiden family after they used her and sacrificed her. She comes off as wishy-washy overall when she does this. She also was supposed to be ‘smart’ but she made moves that constantly caused people to suspect her.

[collapse]

For the ML, he’s far from the perfect character people say he is.

Spoiler

He’s so passive in his life. Too much so. Passively got married, passively left his son to raise himself, passively let the estate fall to ruin (because you know, he has so much money it doesn’t matter who steals how much from his coffers *rolls eyes*), passively granted his son’s request to get married (without anyone asking the girl), passively let his son marry 2 months after 1st wife’s death (he thinks it’s an injustice to the first wife but not enough of an injustice to do anything about it or even mention it), passively got married again, passively refused to talk to his ‘beloved wife’ about issues between them,

Spoiler

passively left her pregnant self

[collapse]

... passive should be his name.

He also fails to communicate with the FL. This is a part of his passivity.

He’s also ‘too busy’. But I want to call it as it is - he just didn’t care, was too passive to care, or didn’t not want to bother. He was so ‘Too busy” defending the country so didn’t even send a steward to his house after his mother and wife died and his son is left all alone in the house with no one to raise him. Also no one to manage the house. Yet, he has ‘eyes in the capital’ and ‘knew what was going on in the house’. Then dude, why did you not deal with it? Too busy? No, he’s just passive. For a great decisive general, passivity is kind of weird.

He also fails to investigate his DIL’s death, even after he understood she was his ‘beloved’ wife.

[collapse]

I just hate that everyone just brushed Gao Xi’s first life and death under the rug.

And that’s why I shaved off a star. I wanted to shave another one off, but in all honesty, despite the above, the story entertained me. It’s not the best story, not the most original story, but not so bad either. <<less

the story itself is pretty good, but like other chinese novels, why should you describe the FL ethereal beauty which out of this world almost in every other chapter!!! we know the FL is very beautiful, magnificient, ethereal beauty, yadaaa yadaa.. it's good to read it at first, but if you always bring the beauty in almost every scene... well, at least I get tired. but of it is your preference to read from author who describe FL's beauty all the time, then this novel is definitely for you

So preface this by saying I'm reading moonfish jellyfish's translation as the other ones were so confusing. Its great I was so sad to see the chapters hadn't matched up to the other translations as it stopped at c42. The MC isn't OP'd or a white lotus she's intelligent funny and a very much petty. For me she's a break from the norm in these transmigration stories. I'm also slowly becoming obsessed with the ML. In other words I am hooked. Can't wait to see where this story goes.

Update. I... more>> finished it. I really liked it I even liked how GCY was unresolved no unrealistic happy ending for someone who was actually quite a bad person. This is an ok read. I like the realism of their character, I like how the author keep the MC personality just like before the rebirth because no one would be able to suddenly change their personality overnight and she's only 16 yrs old

She's a prideful di daughter, self centered, but also hard working, all her effort was done because she doesn't want to lose to her shu sister but it's also because her father and grandmother dotes on her shu sister more and don't forget the fact that the... more>> shu mother and son were the reason for her mother death, also she's growing up without a mother to teach her how to be a good wife so what do you expect

As for the ML he's a good person but also not. He tried to get along with his first wife that's why they have a son but she's just plain crazy, his mother also tried to teach the child so that he will grow up to be sensible but the daughter in law is just too delusional thinking she's an evil mother in law to the point she just stop trying. He know what he did wrong leaving the child alone with that kind of mother and the scheming s*aves but he doesn't really try to mend the relationship, then again the son is already old, it's hard to correct ones character when they are already that old unless they realized it them self

I don't feel bad for the son at all, I think he is just as bad as the other, he is selfish, self-entitled, he's just s*upid to trust one's word without searching for evidence. He doesn't even try to talk it out even when the MC seek him out. He's just as delusional as his mother, even dare to have thought about his now mother

As for that shu sister, she's just a villain. She looks down on everyone just bc she is transmigrated from the future, a 30 years old adult trying to destroy a 6 year old child future. She always think that she's some heroine from a romance novel and scheming at every possible chance. It is okay for her to schemes against other but when other schemes against her, she feel like they are deliberately making it hard for her. Even in the end of her life she never realized her wrongdoing

The MC really doesn't try to make trouble when she come to the mansion. Honestly I don't think she would ever marry the ML if it's not because GR trying to marry Her off. Even when the MC enter the house and become her mother in law, she doesnt deliberately making it hard for anyone bc she never thought of revenge, but she also doesn't let them get away with their behavior

The relationship between MC and ML is also very interesting. It's not the fast paced relationship but you could see how they slowly overcome their insecurities and trust issues and in the end they could accept each other wholly

This is just how I see them and I somehow understand where they come from and why they become like that. Of course there is time where I dislike the MC and ML characters but I'm kind of satisfied with the story progress and how it ends

There is many misunderstanding in this story just because of the lack of conversation and prejudice. The pride of men is really scary, just because the little suspicion they have and words others said thay can really let a person die just like that. Unwilling to search for evidence and only listen to the claim from other. I wonder how they even become an official with that kind of pig brain, I also wonder how that country did not come to ruin <<less

But I really didn't like how he didn't clarified about his 1st wife to other b*tches who thought he loves his 1st wife deeply. I personally enjoyed the story line. It was face-slapping story in a sense, but at the same time not completely so. I think it's more correct to say this story tells us about our decision in life, and also that second chance don't happen to everyone. Both Gao Xi and Gao Ran in a way, had second chance. Gao Xi through rebirth and Gao Ran through transmigration. GR case counted as second chance jmo because it's a second chance for her to restart her life albeit somewhere else.
