In a certain League of Legends (LOL) match, a streamer well-known for infuriating people, was providing commentary and live streaming.

Streamer: This support, so tr*sh.

Streamer: If this jungler was my teammate, I’d already be idling at the fountain, playing piano for him.

Streamer: I suggest this player go back and practice last-hitting properly.

Audience: Stop talking crap! If you’re so good, why don’t you do it?

Streamer: Your daddy here can actually do it.

Audience: Yeah, sure. If you’re that good, I’ll chop my head off and let you kick it around.

A few months later, the veteran LPL team TTC announced their new mid-laner. A boy with flamboyant blue hair appeared in front of the audience. His Zed gameplay was so astonishing that whoever he faced ended up dead. Female fans teetered on the edge of betrayal, tempted to switch their loyalties.

During a post-match MVP interview, everyone held their breath, eagerly watching this talented newcomer.

The young man took the microphone, smiled, and asked, “To the water friend with the StarTV username ‘Suburb King 101,’ my team’s address is on the official website, when will you be mailing your head over?”

After one regular-season game, the staff went backstage to fetch the team for an interview, only to stumble upon TTC’s new mid-laner and their jungler standing in a corner.

TTC’s star jungler, Road, was pressing the team’s new mid-laner, Soft, against the wall. Leaning in close, he asked in a low voice: “You know what to say during the interview, right?”

The fiery mid-laner, who had cemented his tr*sh-talker reputation in his very first game, was currently blushing furiously.

“I know. I won’t tr*sh-talk… I swear I won’t.”

Recommended. I wrote this comment just to put the vote

But if I have to say something the story is really good and sweet. I like the e-sport part and how the relationship is not rushed and how every character has his own personality.

So after the rules of his live streaming platform updated, his live stream was suspended because of him being underage. Without his ‘job’, he needs to find one. Thus sends an application to his Idol to become a professional player. He’s on his way to ab*se the professional players even more.

started reading this novel against my own reason and logic. started it at 11 pm and pulled an all nighter reading it... unfortunate but not unexpected.

loved it. OP MC who's strong, sarcastic, and the gentlest ML ever, honestly. ML spoils MC so much ever since the start, it's actually so fluffy. I don't think I would have been able to take how much the MC embarrassed himself and was like shy in front of the ML if the ML weren't that gentle and pampering towards him. not much drama at... more>> all, basically just happy fluff. cute side characters, satisfying slice of life. definitely recommend. <<less

It's a great novel, and I'm really enjoying reading it. The only complaint I have and the reason it's not five stars is that the League descriptions could be better. For those who don't play League of Legends it's fine, consider it five stars. Same for those who only play casually and don't really understand the game. But while the author writes about League much better than probably 90% of other League stories, there is still a gap. For example, I'm pretty sure they don't even know what wave management... more>> is, and it's a really important concept for high level play. I don't mind them glossing over stuff, but it can get a little frustrating when things aren't explained or don't make sense and are then used as a plot point in some way. The author has also said they created their own meta, but it's still a little hard to swallow when the commentators say Rek'sai is better for a 40+ minute game than Graves... The pick ban might be the worst part because of that. The author directly glosses over team comps and bans, which is a rather important part of the game.

But if this review sounded like a bunch of gibberish to you, enjoy the great story! <<less

I — loved — this — novel.

Summary

Gaming streamer Jian Rong or “Soft” is known for flaming everyone, from his own fans to pro players of LOL. But there's one person he hasn't flamed: the world's number one jungler daddy Lu Boyaun of TTC, aka “Road”. With a mouth like his and an attitude to boot, Jian makes it clear to recruiters and his fan dads all he needs is more money to survive, and joining as a pro player isn't going to happen.

But that all changes when he sends... more>> an email to the God Lu himself with a request: seeking employment.

Lu Boyaun may be the captain of the TTC and a jungler like no other, but after dealing with betrayal after betrayal from former teammates, backstabbing, and fights, he now has a hand injury on top of that. He also has a need for a new mid-laner. But a slender, foul-mouthed streamer catches his eye, one with short, dyed hair: “Soft”.

Now on the same team as the one he admired, Jian Rong is introduced to a different side of the gaming world. From a busybody teammate who can't insult him to his face to a manager who thinks the world is ending every time he gets on social media to interviewers that can't handle his bluntness; Jian Rong might be in a new environment, but you can't take the flame out of a professional flamer.

Unless you're a certain captain that is.

Join TTC as their new formation gears up for the LPL. Between a little “dumbass” bluenette who thinks violence is the answer to all his problems, the cool-headed captain who smells like smoke and likes to ruffle hair, a quiet grump who has to deal with an overzealous sunshine, and a girlfriend-loving top laner who just wants a hug after a win - is this really the team that's going to make it final this year...?

Main Characters

  • Jian Rong ("Soft", "God Jian", "Rongrong", "Blunette", "Dumbass Son", "Daddy", "World's #1 Mid-Laner"). He's our MC1. He's 17 to turn 18 in a few months as this story starts. With his blue hair and slender body, he's quite pretty, but when he opens his mouth, you might find him... less pretty. Or more! Dad certainly thinks her son looks quite pretty even with his foul mouth (I'm a lady). He knows how to dish it and take it. His fanbase are all lovable flamers too. And he might be a prickly cat, but he's quite smitten with his freeloading boyfriend (LMAO). And besides, he's a great dad to Little Orange.
  • Lu Boyuan ("Road", "God Lu", "Boyfriend", "Freeloader", "Word's Number One Jungler Daddy"). He's the captain of TTC and a jungler. He's our MC2 or ML, who honestly could be a jade beauty himself. He's from quite the rich family too with such a funny dad and a cool mom. He has his own pig! He likes to tease his God Jian, but he's also the one getting teased too, even in Rongrong doesn't see it.
What I Liked

E-Sports

I very much enjoy how much the author put League of Legends (LOL) into this and did such a great breakdown of the gameplay and matches and everything. Normally, a lot of the admittedly western novels I follow, when it comes to sports romances, obviously some authors do devout research and are fans themselves of the sport or previous or even current players. But 90% of anything is crap. So I get bummed when an author does a sport's mechanics as window dressing.

Not, no, Mother Jiang is not playing around. And I love her (?) for that. and I'm so grateful to the translators who went above and beyond to explain so many technical terms. I'm no gamer, but I was on the edge of my seat with the descriptions now that I understood what all the verbiage meant.

*furiously taps screen* Authors, take note! Look how they do this! You can do it!

Interpersonal relationships

This sounds silly, but what I enjoy most about novels is seeing how the cast interacts with each other beyond the main characters, protagonists and antagonists alike. Some people are miffed if characters aren't all involved with each other. I disagree. Seeing everyone have their own dynamics with everyone makes the world feel alive.

I think this novel did a good job at showing us a team, not just the two male leads and their entourage. We saw how the other teams operated and their own little relationships too, and I very much loved that.

Humor

Anything gets lost in translations, so I do check the official editions and do my own research alongside my rudimentary understanding of Chinese (based off my intermediate knowledge of Japanese). But the humor just reminded me of early chaos RUN BTS, and I loved it! Baibai was such a hoot and a half, and I'd love to see him in a live drama. He reminded me of “Mr. Girly” from “Love 020” and same with P-baby as X.O. If you know, you know!

The little dumbass had great comedic moments with his foul mouth and temper. And I loved his fans too! Their humor was on point!

Romance

Literally - screamingcryingthrowingupasdffghjjl

No, but fr fr, I did very much enjoy the love story between our two gods, Lu and Jian. I wasn't all that nervous that Rongrong was “underage” at the start (17 and some change) and Lu-ge was 23. Not the biggest age gap I've seen, but I can understand concerns. But I loved seeing Rongrong be a good and obedient son around LBY, and LBY noticing how Rongrong was such a blushing cute around him. I have such a thing for guys having their ears read, so when LBY blushed via his ears, I screeeeeeeamed chile, I SCREEEEEAMED.

I just loved how LBY loved Rongrong's sassiness. I love seeing brat x tamer non-BD*M dynamics. And I like how Rongrong doesn't lose his sass even after he and LBY are boyfriends.

I liked how LBY was kinda showing off Rongrong too. He wasn't all that afraid to "hint" at his boyfriend. While he did pursue Rongrong first, it wasn't this intense chasing. He was mindful of the situation, confident in his feelings, and his little moments of jealousy made me giggle so much!

It was a medium burn, but it didn't feel like it came out of nowhere. It felt natural when Rongrong's admiration for his idol turned into romantic feelings, and LBY's interest turned romantic. And same with the NSFW moments too.

What I Didn't Like

Best goes byebye

I was admittedly weirded out that Rongrong's friend kinda disappeared just like that at the end. Huh. No Little Orange at the end either.

Flawless ML

LBY reminded me of Lord Nai from “Love 020” in which both come from rich families and are essentially the perfect partners who cater to the MC. In short, they're the “perfect boyfriend” and normally have everything under control to do as they please. It does work. But even in LBY's “not as good as you think I am” where he explains his own history of flaws, it never really feels like LBY is flawed; he's just an immaculate, perfect god who no one can bring down from the heaven's. A young master. And that can get a bit boring sometimes.

What would have improved my rating

Bit more backstory

  • Maybe giving a bit more backstory to LBY in a sort of extra would've been nice. I would've liked to see LBY as the sassy, hot-headed, arrogant person before he matured in a few extras. I'd like to see more of his family dynamics as well.
  • Same to Rongrong. We knew about his family situation. But I don't know, having extras that took us back to that time would be nice.
Misc Thoughts

  • I'm not from or in any Asian state or nation, so I can't speak on what is distinctly xenophobia with any macro/microaggressions versus what was just in the POV of the characters. I'm not brushed up on the nuances of Chinese. However, I do know from all my years of being in the CKJY scene that those microaggressions are something fierce. I've seen Knovels and manhwa that are aggressive towards Japan and passive-aggressive/snippy with China. Japan productions that, if Korea had been mentioned originally, get ready for a brand new vague country! I don't think the author was malicious, but I do think that, when we write, we might not recognize our own microaggressions, nor do we intend to be microaggressive, but it comes across anyway, and that's very tricky to navigate.
  • I'm sad about all the censoring. Sigh. But the descriptions of the NSFW scenes take me out!
  • I don't understand why the translators themselves decided to censor certain chapter titles. Unless the author did it on the site and the translators did it from that?
Overall

This was a great novel and I devoured it whenever I was off from work and done with chores and studying. I'm glad that this was recommended to me, and now that I've listed to the audio drama, I want a live-action drama! I think the audiodrama shocked me with how deep Rongrong's voice was. I was expecting him to have a higher-pitched voice of a youth, even if his vocabulary is foul. That took me out. But this being a CBL drama would have me on the ground. I know the most trouble would be the whole LOL portion.

I hope the manhua continues. I'd love to see a xianxia AU honestly. LBY is the perfect young master. Make Rongrong his disciple or sect-brother or something who was known for his rebellious attitude, but he became LBY's loyal disciple. LBY could have some sort of spiritual injury, so Rongrong is determined to not let his shizun get hurt anymore.

Maybe I should write a fanfic... This sounds like a Meatbun novel in the making! <<less

One thing I like the most about Jiang Zi Bei's novels is how the male lead always silently caters to the MC's needs all the time, and this novel did not disappoint.

Even when the narration focused on the gaming aspect I was always able to follow the flow even without having ever played LoL and this is one of the most important things when writing.

This novel had me rolling and dying from laughter, just like Guide on how to fail at online dating, and the protagonist's fanbase is so funny,... more>> I wish there were more streamer-fanbase bond IRL like this one.

Overall it's a really good read, I reccomend it. <<less

I'll drop it here mostly because I'm getting kind of bored, but there's also some things I found weird or uncomfortable

More reviews will probably mention this but the MC started as a 17 year old and turned 18 at around chapter 50 or something but the ML started liking him even before then. Mind you the ML is 23, and although 18 is technically an adult, an 18 and 23 year old together is like the maximum possible accepted range because the maturity gap is so big. And maybe it... more>> wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't noticeable but IT IS and that takes me to my second point

The amount of times I got second hand embarrassment from this is crazy. I kind of consider myself sensitive to that but it was simply too much here, the MC just got into the most embarrassing situations all the time and it was like he couldn't control his emotions and kept looking and acting in certain ways towards the ML even though he didn't want others to think he liked him

Also another thing that bothers me a bunch in many novels, the way the characters act towards each other. The MC wasn't exactly rude and technically you aren't obligated to give full complete answers when talking to strangers but everytime he talked to someone that wasn't from his team he was just so dry and honestly seemed unpleasant to be around and impolite (because in my opinion it's basic courtesy to not look and sound like a corpse when someone starts talking to you, even if you don't feel like talking). The ML was another one, he had not reason to dislike his sub but anytime he asked him something or talked to him, he didn't even look at his face and just sound impatient. And the thing is, that's not how he was to the MC when he first met him, obviously different people leave different first impressions but why so rude for no reason? He started liking a 17 year old super quickly but he can't have some basic manners (like looking at someone when talking to them for example) ? <<less

Jiang Zi Bei always has good novels, especially if you're looking for one that's surrounding a modern universe of esports. They've written a few of these.

I usually don't start off my novels discussing the translator, but I am going to here: the translation was smooth and excellent. Super easy to read. The combined work of the translator and their editor were just beautiful. Not only that, but they did a good job researching and explaining LoL terms for people (like me) who have never played the game before nor know... more>> nothing about it. You do not have to know about LoL at all to enjoy this novel. I think a good portion of that can be credited to the translator and editor.

Jiang Zi Bei also does good at explaining some champions during the novel in order to explain why some tactics work. There was a good split of gaming and lifestyle. It wasn't overwhelming of one and not the other. There was a very good split between the two.

Back to my normal review format...

Jian Rong is a streamer on the LoL side of the streaming platform, but his streaming content doesn't really revolve around his gameplay. Not entirely. It's mainly flaming professional players with jabs and insults that are deep enough to annoy the receiver but not enough to get him banned from the platform. His personality is brash and bold, and there's not a lot of people who want to get in a verbal argument with the guy. Scary! Mean! Despite his online persona of tr*sh-talking, he's nicer in person. By a little bit. He's quieter, and he doesn't like big groups of people.

Lu Boyuan is a professional esports player in the group TTC. The top jungler of all LoL groups. Each group respects him; there's pretty much no one who would talk down about the guy at all, including our MC. He's quiet with people he's not too familiar with, but Lu Boyuan is still seen as a respectful and attractive professional player. Not to mention his overwhelming wealth. With his teammates, he's a bit more open, but most fans hardly see this side of him. More about his personality in the past is revealed when Jian Rong enters the picture.

TTC runs into an issue with their players. They need a new mid-laner. So, they begin recruiting. They end up coming across Jian Rong's streams. He's an excellent mid-laner! Always quick on his feet. Good at playing multiple champions. The only downside is... his temper. His insults are not appropriate for being on a professional team. However, Lu Boyuan takes an interest in his personality by seeing some of himself in him and gets their manager, Ding-ge, to allow Jian Rong to give TTC a shot. After a lot of fight on both ends, Jian Rong ends up becoming the starter mid-laner for TTC. With their new team, TTC fights its way to become champions in the LoL world.

As I said before, there is a great split of gaming and lifestyle here. The slow development of Jian Rong realizing he likes Lu Boyuan is actually so great. Trying to gaslight himself "This is my idol" and that his feelings aren't "I want him as my boyfriend." He's super shy about it which adds for a great comedy side of the novel as it clashes with this online persona of being a lippy badass.

They get together a little over half. Around chapter eighty. So, there's about fifty-ish chapters of them actually together, which is always a nice break from ultimate torturing slow burn. Following that, it's a lot of trying to slip away and find time to be together and kissy and flirty. It's so cute.

I could go on, and on, and on about the side characters of this novel. They're all so good. Each of them help Jian Rong's character development to going from brat streamer to someone who deserves to be respected in the esporting world. The TTC team were all a big family; they love each other. And their bickering with one another is so cute. The side pairing deserved to be together the whole time frankly, but the extras for them were good too. I love them dearly.

As someone who is annoyed by convenient things placed in novels to do cliche things, this story had practically none of that. I think there was one, and it was 1. made funny and 2. done to see the ML'S POV for a moment, which was honestly a nice switch to see inside of his head even if just for a little!

I'm not a big fan of jealousy trope. This novel had a tinge of that. The perfect splash of it, if I may say. It wasn't overwhelmingly horrible and cringe. It was more-so... acting jealous but having a good reason other than jealousy. Like, other professional teams attempting to recruit Jian Rong. Lu Boyuan harshly turns them down because he wants Jian Rong on his team for the reason of having a strong team, but also, he doesn't want anyone else to have him. But probably more for his team. He's not really afraid of someone taking Jian Rong from him. Not really. He doesn't have to be. They know they like each other and don't have to be jealous. I like this trope of understanding each other's emotions for each other are concrete and solid rather than one or both having things deep inner thoughts the other might leave them... what happened to unconditional love and trust. Ugh, I hate cheating trope.

The only thing I really was "ewh" about is how Jian Rong is seventeen when he joins and turns eighteen during it. Lu Boyuan dotes on him the whole time. But it's not bad when it's later admitted by Lu Boyuan that he began to be sweet on him in the beginning because he thought he was an excellent player who he had personally suggested into the team, but later (after he turned eighteen) grew on him and ended up liking him in a boyfriend way. Like phew. But also Lu Boyuan jokes about it and I kind of just wanted him to shut up about it and not make jokes of "Oh, it was almost illegal." Other than this there are really no issues.

I have seen a few things talk about xenophobia with the other Asian teams, but I don't see it as badly as people are saying it is there. Every group of sports are competitive even esports, and these groups of people aren't completely buddy-buddy in the real world either. I don't feel anything was said that probably isn't said in real life between esport groups.

This novel was genuinely a very cute read. If someone was looking for a competitive esport novel, I've always seen I can do it mentioned. This is probably The Esport Competitive novel. For sure worth reading. There are so many cute and fluffy moments, but there are also a lot of sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat competitive moments, comedy moments, and moments of second hand embarrassment. <<less

MC: Jian Rong (a.k.a. Dumbass, fondly)

ML: Lu Boyuan

Team: TTC

... more>> This was hilarious from the very first chapter. Jian Rong is a total badass and absolute comedy gold. His trolling is on point, and his crush on Lu Boyuan is just too adorable.

The entire cast of supporting characters is hilarious and adds so much charm to the story. Also, huge respect to the translators for handling the technical gaming aspects so well. I genuinely enjoyed the gaming portions, which were surprisingly engaging and easy to follow.

Yes, it’s a slow burn, but the kind that’s full of sweetness and tooth-rotting fluff. It never feels frustrating or dragged out. Instead, their transition into a relationship feels like the most natural thing in the world.

I especially loved how the author addresses the “idol filter” through which Jian Rong sees Lu Boyuan. It’s super cute, of course, but also a little dangerous in the long run. And Lu Boyuan, to his credit, is the one who worries most about Jian Rong putting him on a pedestal. That kind of self-awareness in the ML was refreshing to see.

All in all, this was a fun and warm read! <<less

4.2 stars!!!

ive always loved esports and danmei. And this, I daresay, has the perfect balance of that. I love the fierce and unweltering characters. The combatative esports I know nothing off. The funny slapstick jokes. This story is oozing with so much energy. And the second couple. And xiao bai. How cant you love this story?

though, I had to take some stars off because of the blatant racist comments told by MC. Although I do hold back because this could just be a sign to show that really, the MC... more>> is just an off-kilter, immature streamer. Hes recently graduated as a minor, afterall. But im just really bothered how no one calls out MC for doing that. <<less

I feel pretty lukewarm about this novel. Not bad but not super good? I wouldn't read this again but I think everyone should read it once.

Some things I don't like:

Spoiler
    • The crossdressing bit triggered me so much. Wdym you're forcing a minor (just because it's his 18th birthday doesn't mean he has physically and mentally grew into an adult) to crossdress for the pe*verts on the internet when he's clearly unwilling? Luckily the ML stood up for him and gave him an out (even if the MC chose not to take it), otherwise I really couldn't continue reading this.
    • Like the other reviews said, this has some xenophobic undertones. I didn't like how MC would mock Savior's poor chinese skills when he can't speak a lick of korean, and when Savior has been nothing but a friendly rival towards him. Usually when he flames people it's because they provoked him first or played badly. This personal attack just felt like he was being cruel for no reason.... but I chose to look past it on account that the MC is young and therefore insensitive.
    • Plot is kinda slow-moving. It's less about e-sports itself and more about the e-sports players' daily slice of life. I find some parts dull, and if the main story is dragged longer than I would REALLY struggle to finish it.
[collapse]

Some things I like:

Spoiler
    • I do like the MC a lot. He has a poisonous tongue, but in private, he's more introverted. ML takes good care of him, and I like how the author doesn't give him the 'cold and unapproachable' setting that many MLs have.
    • I love how both of them don't hide their relationship but they don't make any official announcement either (because they're aware of the consequences), so it's sort of this open secret for the fans.
    • I love-hate the MC's water friends... they're funny but if this was irl they would have been HATED by other fans. They have no fandom etiquette whatsoever, and it's no wonder MC is constantly banning and flaming them. Sending him gay smut of himself and the ML when the MC is barely legal? I fear they don't have a bottom line. I think they're loyal like dogs (and bark a lot) but wouldn't hesitate to turn around and bite the MC himself if provoked lol. They and Xiao Bai are put on this earth to dig pits for the MC.
    • The dirty move that HT pulled in the last arc got me so enraged that I too, wanted to buy a ticket to Korea and beat up this nonexistent group. Their downfall is IMMENSELY satisfying.
    • ML'S DAD WATCHING HIS FUTURE SON-IN-LAW'S LIVESTREAM AND DEFENDING HIM IN THE COMMENTS?? AFTER KICKING THE ML OUT AFTER HE CAME OUT OF THE CLOSET TO HIM??? ML'S DAD IS A TSUNDERE.
    • A lot of the side characters are fun: the commentators are underrated, I like that Qian's gf is a Soft dad fan, the PUD players Savior and XIU (at first I couldn't understand why XIU has so much alone time with the ML to the point where he's almost set up like the MC's love rival, but he and the ML are really just good bros), and of course the long-suffering mother hen Ding-ge (the scene at the temple with PUD's manager ended me. I can't with these middle-aged men).
    • And speaking of the temple scene, I could really relate to the MC being non-religious but just going through the motions because I too, just wave around incense sticks with no thoughts in my head when I'm dragged to pray by my parents. It's refreshing to meet an MC who's so... true to himself? Like that's the main appeal of the MC for me, he likes what he likes and you'll KNOW it if he doesn't like.
    • THE TRANSLATIONS ARE REALLY GOOD, and the footnotes are so helpful especially the game related ones. I want to bestow the God title to the translator.

I really love author Jiang Zi Bei, in the novel update, I almost finished all of his novels. And I'm more and more convinced that I'm really in love with the comedic side of his stories and how he so geniusly mixes and matches all the characters he creates. All the characters are lively, fun, and loveable.

I read ICDI for the second time, after reading Jiang Zi Bei-nim's My Nemesis, I was looking at other novels and met our baby rong rong again. I searched all the way to the... more>> bottom and didn't find my review. As I'm sure I've read and left a review before, maybe two or three years ago, and since it's the weekend, I decided to reread from the first chapter.

And I fell in love all over again, and probably more deeply 🥺 because reading it a second time made me discover that this novel is really very light and fun 😭🫶🏻

There are three esport novels that still resonate with me. Glory (it's the hardest of the bunch but it's the most touching in every way) All arround mid laner (It's a ringaan but much heavier and ICDI and of course with a main character that drives me crazy) and lastly of course IcDI. It's the most enjoyable of them all because it's lighter than the others (in my opinion) light, yet the way the characters are, all without exception...

All the characters in this story really entertained me. Ignoring the annoying LCK that adds spice, this story is really like a drug that makes us laugh out loud.

I only really hope for more, maybe extra for Rong rong and her crazy father. For rong rong and the Road family 🥹

Hahh I still want to leave a lot of reviews, but I feel it will be too long, the point is maybe I will come back to read this story in a few years. <<less

I write this having last read this a few weeks ago on a binge-read, so pardon the vagueness. I also haven't completed the novel in its entirety, so I will be missing out on a few parts. My thoughts will be brief.

It's a fun read. Story is effectively split between e-sports, romance and streaming segments. In order of personal taste, it was streaming > romance > e-sports.

Streaming segments were overall fun---silly yet sweet. Jian Rong's dynamic with his chat was my personal highlight, what with the banter but also underlying... more>> comradery, the same people badmouthing him as easily as they breathed defending him to death against antis.

Romance was cute with sensual moments. Dynamic's effectively a badmouthed kid with a not-so-secret soft spot for one person, who is likewise charmed by the kid's bold personality. Really fun when Jian Rong's chat calls out whenever he blushes or shows outright favoritism for Road. Also, the dynamic of them in a secret relationship once they get together is quite exciting, with how bold Lu Boyuan can get (they both have their moments, though). Lu Boyuan does a lot of the "pulling, " but Jian Rong has a few tricks up his sleeve, making their dynamic quite charged at times. It's alluring! One thing I'll say, though: I wasn't big on was the jailbait aspect they did before Jian Rong became 18---it was a relatively minor aspect of the novel, but it did make me a bit uncomfortable, so I just wanted to take note of that here.

E-sports elements were fine, but, for me, there's only so much you can do to make the game entertaining. I like seeing the technical stuff be explained, but at the same time it's a bit of a slog. I think it's harder for me particularly as I don't really care for the game, but author did their best.

Other comments: I think the side characters are endearing although I personally find they don't contain much depth. Enough on them to be endeared and entertained, but nothing much beyond that. Also, world is rather self-contained---focus is solely on the team, allies, threats, etc.. Nothing wrong with that, per se, just a note. There's a side couple I'm slightly mixed on---pairing is alright, but I feel with the combined presence of the main pairing it just feels like a lot. It's in the sense that, their dynamic, while different from the main couple, isn't that dissimilar---there is some common ground being tread to the point where I'm not super enthused by it, what with
Spoiler

one of them possessing a form of concealed pining, as well as the e-sport teammates dynamic, where they also harbor this aspect of forbidden love

.

But in any case: I haven't finished the novel, so I can't comment any further. That last paragraph was just me being a bit nitpicky, so I don't harbor any grievance or anything like that if people disagree.

Overall, the novel was nice. I plan on coming back later to complete it, and possibly add an edit here, too. <<less

4.5 This was my first proper e-sports novel and I did not expect to enjoy the game aspect as much as I did despite never seeing LoL gameplay in my life.. ICDI is already full of romantic tension and it was very satisfying to get invested in the matches as well. I felt like I was becoming one with the barrage.. This novel was incredibly cute and I loved Jian Rong's personality, his development really scratched the itch I had for more character development after reading ghfod! But I don't... more>> know if I could pick a favorite between the two. With that being said, RoadSoft's development both together and separately really was heartwarming to witness. It felt so realistic and smooth that I didn't realize how much had changed from the beginning of the novel until there was a callback in the later chapters. I also loved getting side couple material in the extras!! <<less

Chat, I'm not crying I swear!

Such a fluffy novel, they were the cutest!! The ending seriously got to me, I almost shed tears. I'm not exaggerating! The ending is arguably my favorite part ever, although I'm bitter that I completed this gem, the end part was so cute I couldn't help but giggle.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have high expectations, I've read the author's other works and boy did I ride a rollercoaster of emotions at that time. (Please read their other works!!) But surprise surprise, another... more>> one of the author's works has once again entered my list of favorite danmeis.

MC loves to tr*sh talk, and everytime he does it's always so funny, he's so blunt and honest I love him sm. I love how the novel shows his growth as time passes, how he eventually warms up to his new team (and how the team warms up to him) and during that, we get a bunch of funny but heartwarming scenes. I love seeing MC's dynamics with the different characters, especially with ML. They're so cute and DON'T GET ME STARTED WITH THEIR FIRST KISS!!! Kyaaa I almost died there.

I really love the ML. He's such a cutie and such a softie for MC. He always suppresses his laugh w MC it's so cute. And boy do I love his streaming scenes. He likes teasing MC in his streams, and he's always so blunt abt it. The chat could explode at any time and he's asking MC to duo queue w him lmao

But now, why'd I give it a 4 star rating if I love it sm? Well, there are a few flaws in this. The last match kinda threw me off a bit, how they kept shading the Korean server, now ik the LoL fandom itself is very toxic, and I expected a lot of shading in this novel, but yk the Korean team themselves feel a tad bit too villianized, but there are still some cute scenes between main cast and other Korean characters, it just threw me off.

Second, it ended way too short. Now!! This isn't me being sad it ended, but I just wished we got more scenes about MC's backstory, a few flashbacks wouldn't hurt. Even so, the very few scenes abt MC's backstory feel very underwhelming, they could've been better.

Spoiler

the scene where ML and MC goes to MC's parents graves specifically. It was wayyy too short, okay!

[collapse]

Not only that, there are a few scenes that should've been major plot points to the story that feels underwhelming, too.

Spoiler

specifically when their relationship gets revealed, I expected alot more but it felt a bit lacking imo

[collapse]

But overall, I recommend it. <<less

I have never played games in my life, excluding Candy crush, but this story had me hooked. The gaming aspect was really well-portrayed, and I didn't feel overwhelmed by it. Our tr*sh-talk king is hilarious, and his black fans are even more so. The barrage had me clutching my stomach. The ML is so endeared by the MC's brash and audacious personality, and I can't even blame him because I was too. There are some instances of underhanded and xenophobic comments that made me feel put off, but other than... more>> that it's a great read. Well-paced, interesting, hilarious and exciting. READ IT. You won't regret it <<less
