Despite having found Mingxi, the Zhao family continued to favor the fake daughter, saying that Mingxi was not as kind nor as graceful as Zhao Yuan.

Mingxi didn’t mind. She continued to work hard to please her family although they would always say that she was trying to rob their attention away from Zhao Yuan.

Until she died because of a terminal illness.

It was then that she realized that Zhao Yuan was the actual lady blessed by luck while she was merely this novel’s evil supporting character with a tragic ending.

Zhao Mingxi who was given a second chance at life was bitterly disappointed. She no longer cared about her family. Screw her family and her fiancé. She immediately packed her bags and left home, off to complete the task given by the system named ‘Becoming Friends With Popular and Valuable Characters’.

After she left, the house suddenly became cold and quiet.

By right they should feel at ease, but–

Her parents, her indifferent elder brother, her brash younger brother, Shen Liyao who was used to her pursuits were all successively feeling… unused to it?

What the heck. Actually too freaking cute!!! This novel is like a roller-coaster, one moment you are high on the cute heart-warming moments, the next you're plunged deeply into the emotional turmoil of a messed up family drama. But everything is wrapped up nicely by the sweetness of the MC and the ML's relationship.

The characters may be a bit bland and one dimensional at times, but generally, all of them have their own motivations and thoughts. You feel sorry for some of them, and don't care as much for others.

The... more>> revenge aspect was really satisfying. I liked how the MC (mingxi) was decisive in her actions of cutting her family off. She never regretted what she did, and good for her!! I also liked how her revenge wasn't like other typical Chinese novels where the MC harms others, ruins lives or other immoral stuff. She isn't caught up in making others miserable for her own horrible circumstances, but rather seeks revenge by living her best life, but also knows when to stand up for herself and those she cares about. In that way, she is one of my favourite MC's. She isn't mean, cold, or spiteful if she doesn't have to be, but calm, optimistic and hard-working. Her reformation from villainess to top student was really super cool!!!

Then, the ML (Fu Yangxi). Oh my God, he is the sweetest, cutest, most sincere love interest I've ever seen! His character is very realistically childish and rash at times, especially since this is a highschool romance. All too often there are highschool students in these types of novels that are described like tyrant CEO boss types. Like WTF? What kind of 18 yr old has 100 businesses, 1 billion networth and drinks Shiraz red wine?? Anyway, the ML is also unexpectedly mature, understanding and kind. He is the archetypal tsundere! He has his own painful past, but he never takes out his own grievances on others. I cannot go on about how much I like him. He also asks for consent and is patient. The MC almost wants to force him sometimes lol.

Moving on to the other characters. First of all, the MC's family.

Spoiler

OK, I feel bad for them, andddd I kinda don't at the same time. Her biological family favours their adopted daughter, Zhao Yuan, more than the MC. They found MC when she was 15, and took her in for 2 years. In those 2 years, in order to make Zhao Yuan feel unthreatened by MC's existence, they treated MC horribly.

MC had to suck up to her family a lot, and had lots of expectations of love, but didn't get anything in return.

There's the younger brother, superstar older bother, CEO older brother, mum and dad. All of them realise too late that they've treated MC badly. Then there's a whole spiel about how blood is thicker than water when they finally lose MC. Really have no idea how their brains work. It's revealed that they've been tricked by a nanny, but what does that have anything to do with their own treatment of MC and moral conduct? Honestly don't feel bad for any of them except the little brother who genuinely sees MC as an older sister and was just immature. The rest can go into tr*shbin. They are all adults and should know how to act!

Then, Zhao Yuan. I am really conflicted about her. She is not malicious, just petty. She is naturally insecure about her position in the family, so she would find ways to pit herself against the MC. Purposefully, making MC seem jealous and dumb, that kind of stuff. Everyone spoils her, so she thinks she can do anything. Later on, she is kicked out of the family for something that's not really her fault and goes down a dark path. WTH, she is a child, if the adults around her enable her behaviour, of course she will act like how she acts. MC's family is just tr*sh ok!! I don't hate Zhao Yuan, but don't like her either.

[collapse]

Then there are ML's friends, who are hilarious and charming. They are all really likeable, nice and mature despite a rebellious farce. There is also this dude called Shen whatever, who MC had a crush on before but treated MC coldly. Ofc he regrets it later, just like her family, but he learns to let go so he's an alright guy.

The system aspect wasn't really present except for the beginning of the novel. Sometimes characters that seem important are introduced, but just disappear into the background. On the whole though, this was a really satisfying read, and the translation was great!! Ok, I'm so sorry for rambling on and on, but this novel just got me really excited. <<less

The ML is very cute and sweet, and when she's with him, so is the MC. The problem is the rest of the plot. 30 chapters in I was already sick and tired of hearing about the MC's family, we get it, she has no intention of ever having anything to do with them and they regret it. 60 chapters in and I couldn't believe we were still harping on this topic. I could not care less about those characters and every time they showed up the story became super... more>> boring. (I was also not interested in the former love interest harping on and on about his regret as well, but at least he actually served a plot purpose)

In addition the MC has a serious mary sue problem to the point of being boring, as well. Only around the ML does she manage to feel like a 3d character, the rest of the time she's too perfect at everything. I couldn't care less about her winning the beauty contest and the academic contest, those plot lines were very dull and written like cardboard. By contrast, interactions with the ML's class were usually funny and interesting.

In conclusion, the ML is the redeeming factor of this novel. His combination of being hot headed, tsundere, narcissistic, and yet genuinely thoughtful and considerate (multiple times where he specifically chooses not to do some asinine male lead behavior because he knows it could hurt the MC, and he's always super attentive in a very tsundere way) was very cute. But beyond that, the story and writing just get way better when he's around, the interesting things happen in his presence, there's tension, there's fun interactions... it feels like scenes without him the author just goes through the motions and drags things on and on and on. <<less

Hands down, one of the best light romance I've read so far.

It has a really nice mix of face-slapping, sad moments and fluff.

Normally, I don't really like the swapped-at-birth trope as the family always acts as if it can only be one daughter or the other which makes me feel weird. However, in this novel, I really like how the author made them quite realistic and gave a lot of reasoning on the reasons for their actions. Even though I HATED that family for the way they treated her in... more>> her first life and the way they switched up the moment they realised that they had lost her, I couldn't help but feel pity for them after they finally realised their mistakes and reflected. I also like how the author doesn't make the antagonists a 'bad person' all around (except for maybe Zhao Yuan)

Spoiler

Personally, I found the family's end kind of bittersweet but I think that's the perfect way to end things. Although I felt kind of bad for that family, especially Zhao Yuning, the oldest brother and the mother, I really liked how Mingxi did not choose to forgive them but instead chose to move on without them.

[collapse]

Fu Yangxi. One of my favourite male leads of all time. I love him soo muchhhhh.

He isn't like those typical, amazing at everything male leads instead, he's more realistic. He has a pretty tough family life as well and he's unused to people liking him for him, and not for his money, so when ZMX starts giving him attention, he's extremely flattered. I really love the contrast between Fu Yangxi and her family/the guy she used to like. Whilst they took Zhao Mingxi's sincerity for granted. He genuinely GENUINELY appreciated it!

Please don't be put off by the little number of chapters translated, the MTL are EXTREMELY readable which is also a plus. It won't give you a headache, I promise. <<less

Top marks all around. It's the best take on the switched at birth returning to the biological family and dealing with the cuckoo that's trying to keep her place in the nest that I've seen.

The dynamics really ring true, unlike say "The Legitimate Daughter Doesn't Care", The MC does care quite a bit but bites down and makes hard choices with a very believable motivation.

There's a few rough edges. The MC is a little bit OP (nowhere near the usual assassin, cultivator, doctor trope). The system is unneeded and detracts.... more>> But these are small potatoes in what's a great read <<less

Another Rebirth Do-Over with the plot of Swapped at Birth, adding on with a system.

Overall, I have to admit despite reading endless stories with similar storylines, this story was unique in it's own way. It was not rebirth for revenge and face slapping of all the enemies. In fact, the whole story was quite emotional. Up until the end, the FL didn't go out and use her first life advantage to triumph and stomp on the previous heroine. In fact, she just persists to study and work hard in her... more>> own way. The goal is to not die early due to the negative villain karma, and to live her life happily.

In the last life, the FL devoted 8 years of her life into trying to integrate into her real genetic family, only to die of brain cancer without sympathy and support from her family. Everything that should have been born as her ended up with another child. Despite all her personal efforts, the heroine aura overtook everything and she couldn't fight against that. The worst part is that, it wasn't really anything that the heroine did to fight against her, nor did her family ab*se her or torture her purposely. However, the psychological ab*se was endless, and yet her family didn't even realize they were doing it.

In her rebirth, this time she will cut off her ties from those that hurt her and focus on her own life. Since they never truly accepted her and supported until her dying days in the first life, she can pursue her own dreams, happiness, and survival on her own.

I did have a lot of mixed feelings with her complete cut off of her family, afterall, they did truly come to realize the errors eventually and tried to make up for it. But if you think about it, in the first life, she spent 8 miserable years until her death. In this second life, she has already given 2 years of life at the risk of her health, education, and future already. So I can understand, that honestly, she's already tried giving her all and doesn't want to commit to single another moment of a new life to such unhappiness. Afterall, she knows that death is coming for her soon, unless she can break the cycle. So enough is enough. She lived happily without them for the first 15 years in her life. Now it's time to move on and focus on herself now.

The concept of freeloading off other's karma is amusing and a bit unique among the system tropes. It created for quite a lot of comedy and misunderstanding in trying to feed off of this good karma. I also quite like that she never pursues any revenge for either the past life or the current life. She's quite goal oriented with the first being to remove her physical scars, prevent her death, make money, and get a scholarship.

The FL and the ML are quite an amusing pairing. The ML is super tsundere, and despite his sharp words, he's really a big softie with his own sob story background. In the end, if feels like the FL is actually more of the aggressor, which adds to the comedy. <<less

Do you want to read a dog blood romance that seems somewhat less annoying than the 3000 chapter ones? Then look no further.

This story is amazing, despite my rating. My rating comes from my personal opinion and not the story's ability to captivate.

Let's get into it!

The Plot (so far)

Spoiler

It has opened so many avenues for good plot lines that feel so spread out and untouched. It's only the middle of the story, so I have no problem with multiple plot lines going at once. It makes the story interesting, but I feel that the romance needs more help. Desperate help.

[collapse]

The romance (so far)

Spoiler

Ever had a friend trapped in an abusive relationship, but they're too desperate for love to leave? That's Mingxi (FL) and Yangxi (ML). Mingxi met Yangxi for the explicit purpose of living. She gets close, gets touchy, and takes all signs of affection that Yangxi gives, but, this mentally 23 yr old woman, doesn't know that he likes her? EVERYONE knows at this point BUT her for too long. Yangxi deals with heartbreak after heartbreak, and still treats her well because she's the only one who cares about him. It's frustrating because I want someone better than the FL for him.

[collapse]

The FL (so far)

Spoiler

She's so manipulative and unintentionally cruel/standoff-ish. Her family may have used her to keep everything stable, but does Mingxi believe that she's any different? Apparently she doesn't even connect her using Yangxi because she does everything a couple would (except the explicit stuff), and can't see that Yangxi is amazing or likes her until he pulls away. Am I supposed to like this mentally 23 yr old s*upid FL?She can clarify everything immediately but the important stuff. She's so exhausting and hypocritical.

Nevermind that she knows her family are under the influence of the adoptive daughter's halo, she doesn't spare them her ire at all. I can't help but feel bad for them as they're only free when it's too late.

[collapse]

The ML (so far)

Spoiler

A victim of never having any comfort, so he latches onto the first person to show him any. Doesn't help that his friend coaxes him into the delusion of having a secretive romance with Mingxi. Then he created boundaries, only for her to step over them. I want him to get help because his whole family is tr*sh, and he doesn't deserve to endure love triangle after love triangle. Can't wait for the truth of his family to come out, so he can finally get closure. Don't want him depending on this s*upid FL for help.

[collapse]

Shen Liyao (so far)

Spoiler

One word to describe him: delusional. I bet if Mingxi punched him in the throat, he'd choke out a thank you. His friends will even say that all women are violent towards their crush. Honestly, his friends are villains, and he's dangerously s*upid. How many rejections can a s*upid man take before he learns his lesson? Who knows.

[collapse]

Zhao Yuan (so far)

Spoiler

Super forgettable for a villain. She doesn't take action or stir too much trouble because her factory settings won't let her act out loud. She's a dumb insecure child, and this world was created for her success. Why would the girl be anything but one dimensional?

[collapse]

Despite my critiques, I love this story and will continue my review as it goes on further. <<less

Long review. Tldr: cute ML, average MC, meh second half and ending.

Cute and entertaining enough, not a complicated story but the characters aren't completely shallow. Solid 3 star story, but the ML is great so he gets his own star, which makes it a 4.

The MC was a very standard MC for this type of novel, didn't love her but liked her ok. The ML is probably my favorite character. He was cute, a little tsundere but not abnoxiously so. The original ML was interesting, showed some growth at the... more>> end, I didn't hate him but he was too proud to be likable. The part that bothered me a bit is the ML's family.

I think they deserved a bit better and I kind of diskliked the ending for the adopted daughter.

There are 3 reasons the family part bugged me.
    • She knows this is a book with the family confined to their roles in the original timeline and is affected by the adopted daughters halo.
    • She gets a second chance to fix things for herself so why doesn't the family get a second chance?
    • Lastly I'm probably so upset because I'm a mom, and mom's make mistakes too.
The family showed signs of breaking out of the adopted daughters control early, especially the 2 brothers. I don't think she should have forgiven them easy, but I thought her indifference to them went on way too long, especially to the younger brother. She has a mentality of 20+ why is she being so hard on a 16 year immature boy who repeatedly tries to fix his relationship with her. I mean the ML has a way worse relationship with his mom, but he is looking forward to her getting better. So why is she so inflexible

Also was hoping for a better end for the adopted daughter and not such a cliche end.

Did she do some crappy things to the MC, absolutely, but she was having issues too. She had no real family, thought she was getting replaced, her birth mom did something extremely wicked, and she was extremely insecure. This lead her to doing s*upid things. Would have been better if she got help and grew instead of such a s*upid ending for her.

Also wasn't a fan on how the family just abandoned her, she didn't know her birth mom did what she did.

All in all, not mad that read it but will probably forget about it quickly. <<less

Had to read the MTL because I really wanna know the whole story.

The both of them are so fluffy.

I really loved the fact that all of the family members felt guilty towards their actions towards her. Althoigh in the end, they were never able to reconcile but as what Yuning said, a lifetine is still long, maybe Mingxi will finally look at their way every now and then. But it was satisfying seeing her not really caring anymore and them feeling like they lost something precious and only realizing it... more>> too late.

I feel sorry for Shen Liyao. I actually do not hate him. In the first timeline, he never dabbled with Zhao Yuan. What he really did is just that he was too proud, too restrained and too arrogant. He liked her but because of his pride and prestige, he didn't show it and just let her chase after him. Thinking that she will always chase after him and when she caught up, they'll be walking on the same road. Only to realize that she was not chasing him anymore. That she didn't look for him anymore. And he was lost. When you lose something, that's the time you realize that they were important to you all along. Shen Liyao was this. It did hint that he liked her all along. Like for the first time he saw her, he was shocked because of her beauty but still made himself indifferent because he was looked up upon as a God that was cold and all about studying. Later on when Mingxi kept chasing him, he didn't discouraged her AS RUTHLESS as other girls and you can see that he actually was okay with her. When results of the tests come out, he goes out of his way and walks to the normal class to see her ranking and when he sees her rank slowly go up. He'll think she's slowly catching up to him, slowly moving closer to him. But his emotionless and pridefulness hurt her. His indifferent ways only struck her when she was already so sad due to her family problems. That's why they were never meant to be. But I still don't hate Shen Liyao, he's just a poor boy who's too late to notice his feelings and was taught to grow up that he was the best and that looking down on others and being cold was what he was supposed to do.

Anyway, I still love Fu Yanxi, he's so adorable. That reference where if he's so proud of himself like a bird shaking his feahters is so dayun cute. He's so tsundere, it's such a gap moe! I wanna tease him as much as Mingxi does with him. His red ears and narcissistic speaking is so funny and adorable. Although his experiences are not but he's so strong and I want him tooooooo!

Thank you for this book and thank you for translating! <<less

Although I feel like she was too excessive in some parts like cutting off her younger brother (I feel that it’s too much because as an elder sibling myself, they’re really are like that. They are arrogant, s*upid, ignorant, and quite ungrateful. But in the end of the day, her younger brother did bond with her. My brother when we were younger, I would fight with him almost everyday, but when we are now older, we’re very close. IDK, I can’t really speak for her because we all grew up... more>> differently.

Aside from that, I think this is really great read. Not a waste of time. The ML is cute. And their love story makes me want to fall in love too. Hahaha. But really, where can you find a guy like this? XD <<less

I picked this up by accident after finding out there was a manhua for it. When I saw that there was only 70 chapters + side stories, I was intrigued. A Chinese story being less than 1000 chapters? Sign me up!

For the most part, this is a quick read that I finished in a day. I was smiling at some parts and tear up at others. The romance is very high school, but it was cute. I like the ML and really enjoyed him fall in love and act like... more>> a cute tsundere. I also liked how it showed the FL work hard to do well at school. It was a fun novel to read.

Things I enjoyed:

  • I liked how the FL worked hard at school and her relationship with the ML. It did feel like she focused on doing well for herself via education instead of focusing only on romance.
  • The ML is a cutie. A tsundere, but in a cute way. He says he isn’t doing anything for you, but his facial expression and red tipped ears tell you a different story. He's also super loyal and kind. For his friends and the FL, he'll bring them the sun if you asked for it. He was the best thing in the novel!
  • It’s short! Chinese novels can go on for ages, but this one was short and sweet.
And that’s it. Which is odd, because as I stated before, I thought it was a fun read. When I was done, I was satisfied, I slept, woke up, then I came to novelupdates to write a review. I opened my Word document and as I was thinking about what to write, I realized that there are some major problems with this novel. In fact, the more I think about it, the more issues pop up.

Like other Chinese novels, we have our FL becoming the most beautiful person in the world. People start to like her once she becomes pretty. Before she becomes pretty, she has a scar, which isn’t that large, but because of it she’s considered ugly.

The FL’s only female friend doesn’t show up as often as the male side characters. Aside from her friend and one character who makes only one appearance, all of the other female side characters that are the FL’s age are horrible people who are jealous.

Speaking of the female lead’s friend, there was a plot point about how her father’s company goes bankrupt due to a someone. The idea is that because the female lead’s friend hates the main female antagonist, the heroine halo causes the friend’s company to go bankrupt.

When that is brought up, the FL says that she’ll try to stop this from happening and then doesn’t do anything. In fact, the friend hardly shows up at all.

The OGcrush of FL is a cold CEO type of character. When she’s reborn, she decides to ditch him for the human good luck charger that is the ML. The thing is, the crush does help her a bit and treats her differently compared to everyone else. He just wants to focus on his studies and not on romance. The man just wants to be alone with his robot. But then the FL ditches him without any sort of talk and he starts becoming more interested in her in dumb ways.

Fair enough, everyone is paying attention to her now, but I feel like his character gets shafted a bit when he could have been a good male lead. Not to mention that he’s technically engaged to her, but that whole story line gets dropped too.

There is also a double standard regarding the family life of the FL and the family life of the ML lead. Both are mistreated by their family. I mean, heavily mistreated, especially the ML who goes through multiple scenes of physical, emotional and psychological ab*se. He’s basically the punching bag of his family and yet it’s never brought up that he should cut ties with them. The way they laid out his story, it seemed like we'd see him and the FL find a home in each other since their families suck, but instead

Spoiler

He talks to his family, the FL talks to them too, and the relationship, while not perfect, becomes better than before. So why couldn’t the FL do the same with her family?

[collapse]

Also, the FL hates her family for not treating her as a human, but she treats the ML as a good luck charger. It brings some laughs as the ML misunderstands her actions, but when you think about it, she was initially treating him in a way that made him not human to her. The fact that she’s oblivious to him for most of the book is kind of weird too. As an adult, she dies at 23, she should know that certain actions will make people think certain things. But she does it anyways without caring about how the ML feels about it.

The story is also unfair to the idea of adoptive children. It seems like unless they’re blood, they’re not worth it. The main plot point of the story is how the FL and the OGFL were swapped at birth. OGFL ends up in the hospital when she’s 15 and that’s when she, along with her family, finds out that she’s not related to them. They still love her, obviously, but the search for their biological child and end up finding her. This means our FL goes to her family when she’s 15.

The FL wants to connect with her family, but it seems she gets shut out because they don’t want the OGFL to feel bad for not being biologically related to them. So, they treat her as a second-class citizen in the family.

Meanwhile, the OGFL feels like because she’s not biologically related to them, she’ll get tossed aside once the real daughter shows up.

In the first pages of the novel, our FL criticizes how the “author” made her the villainous tragic side character who only finds acceptance through death. The FL says that she was the biological daughter, so how could she steal the position of the “daughter” when it was hers in the first place.

But the adoptive daughter, our OGFL, doesn’t get the same sort of nuances to her character. She grew up spoiled and has a heroine halo that makes everyone to love her. She’s written that way. She isn’t perfect and I’m not defending her actions, but the nuances of her finding out her family isn’t biologically hers is one that makes me sympathize with her. Once the FL comes into the picture, OGFL probably felt like an outsider in her family and acted more spoiled as a result. It doesn’t help that everyone continued to spoil her as a result.

Unfortunately, she’s written in a very one note so we don’t really see her as a proper character.

Spoiler

Not to mention that by the end of the novel, the family has distanced themselves from her until they ultimately kick her out of the family. Her worst fears come to fruition as a result and it makes her go crazy at the end.

We know that she's smart, so why couldn't she have gotten a tuition at some university where she could start over? Why did we see her become a washed up idol trainee who wears "revealing" clothing? Why did she all of a sudden get a loser boyfriend when she had a fan club at school? Even if her background was shady, she still had rich guys who wanted her.

[collapse]

What does that say about adoptive children though? I kind of wish the FL and the OGFL had a few scenes where they can humanize with each other. Out of everyone in the family, they probably understand each other the best, but because this is a novel where the FL has to win. And therefore, the OGFL, who is adopted, must be a villain.

It’s kind of disappointing in the end.

Speaking of the heroine halo, this brings about my main issue with the novel.

Spoiler

Let me preface by saying that I don’t condone the actions of the FL’s family. They were jerks to her and didn’t appreciate her until she died or left.... but because we know that there’s a heroine halo on the OGFL, it makes their actions excusable since they were conditioned or brainwashed into feeling this way.

Excusable might not be the right word here, but whenever an author introduces a system like this, it makes me harder for me to view the characters affected by it in a negative light. If it wasn’t for the heroine halo, would the family be this vicious to our FL? Probably not.

They might have just raised both of the girls together and called it a day.

[collapse]

I also feel bad for the FL’s younger brother, because he’s a kid and he goes through an entire breakdown because of all of this. We get his POV at some points and he’s more or less ignored by his family. He had sweet moments with the FL too, way before she cuts them off. He actively spent time with her, because no one would spend time on him.

Spoiler

And while the ending does make it seem like there might be some sort of reunion between the two, it didn’t sit right with me that she was so cold to him. If the heroine halo wasn’t there, then I’d understand her apprehension towards him and her wariness to get close. But there’s a heroine halo, so it’s not like he could have controlled himself. And because he can’t control himself, is he truly at fault?

The FL has a system that lets her take the luck of the ML, which then lowers the OGFL’s heroine halo. Before this really kicks into gear, we see the little brother defending the FL. At most, he’s a spoiled, ignored brat. Which makes sense, since he’s given everything but is practically ignored by his family. The only way he knows how to get attention is to be a brat.

His personality and his desire to change, along with the backstory of the heroine’s halo, made me feel awful for him. I wanted a scene where at least he could get a proper reconciliation but we never got it.

[collapse]

So yea, I was satisfied when I read the story but the more I thought about it, the more I had questions about everything. It’s an okay story and the ML is adorable. It’s also short, so it won’t take that long to finish. But there are issues once you think about things. <<less

I like how she severe her relationship with zhao family, and how the ending implied that they never reconciled.

Unlike the other novel with same plot (forget its name) that book FL still have some heart to only give her s*um father a gift in the end of the story even tho the story plot more heartbreaking since they treated the other girl sincerely and trully disgusted with the FL (fyi there's no aura or whatever)

I dont really get it why some of people still wanted her to reconcile. Yea,... more>> I know the family did that under influenced of ZY aura but their action is real in the past, and FL has suffer enough. If I were in her shoes, just looking at those family who ab*se me (uncoditionally or under influenced or whatever) I would probably vomit. They even did not let her touch ZY things, as if she's some disgusting worms or shit. Why should FL, the victim forgive her ab*ser lol. She have the right to live peacfully away from her trauma. <<less

This is probably by far my most favorite Chinese novel.

The story flows so smoothly. There aren't any awkward lines or logic fails. It's all well written and the story is great.

You will cry, laugh, get angry, feel shocked and fall in love along with the MC. Her decisiveness is so refreshing too. Once she left her family, she never went back. I love how resolute she is!!

Also, the romance! I cannot believe how mature there love is at that age. The ML is such a warm person. He is the... more>> most incredible ML I have seen! He is expressive, warm, thoughtful, sincere and genuinely in love with the MC.

Truthfully, there were times that I wanted her to reconcile with her family because they truly fell apart when she left, but that would have been against the whole point of the story. I'm glad she found people that, although were not blood-related to her, LOVED her so much that they completely filled up the hole in her heart. She was not left wanting and she enjoyed her life.

This is truly a great read! Give yourself a treat and read this! <<less

I really love the main CP on this novel!! The ML is too tsundere and I freaking love it!! The MC is dense af but I love the scene when her feelings to the ML continue to grows and then blooms. I smiled s*upidly when I read their scenes. About her biological family of the MC, I have mix feelings towards them, but I am really glad that the MC decides to cut her relationship to them. She was hurt and betrayed by them in her first life, but then... more>> in her second life, she knows that it's time to move on and cut all her ties to them. She's kinda tired from their dramas. Chen Liyao (in the RAWS, his name was Shen Liyao), for me, he is a very high maintenance kid. I don't know what to feel about him. He's kinda difficult to sympathize with due to his high maintenance actions. So I felt neutral towards him. But kudos to the author for like giving this a lesson to him. Thank you @Isohungry Translations for picking up this novel and kudos for your hard work you put into this! <<less

I know I read it a long time ago, I wonder why I never wrote a review? I might re-read it these days to refresh my memory and add to what I remember... Unfortunately, I remember too little haha.

/edit: after re-read

The story is very shoujo-esque, if I'm being honest, there is a feel of ridiculousness and light-heartedness about some things that leave me with a bad taste. It doesn't mean that such stories are impossible to read (look at the rates and the positive comments), but the content and routines... more>> make the story questionable sometimes. If I were younger and if I were really new to the genre, I might have liked it better and maybe even was impressed by it, but I feel like an old antique that saw too many osimilar stories to see some routines as a miss and not as a hit.

  • 1st. The system either forcing MC doing something or completing the task in order for MC to survive. One of my most disliked tools in general. Maybe people don't realize or they see it, but eventually it always paints the MC as a selfish person, it always progresses into the situation where system asks something of MC and the one who is the target misunderstands MC for being emotional. And don't try to argue with me, although Mingxi asked the system if it will do any harm to the body, but she never even thought about the emotional value of her actions towards another person. Yes, she wants to survive that is why she does this, but she's a person who lived up to 23 and should be more mature and have more ideas to eventually realize that her actions are misleading. It never crossed her mind at all. Which leads to another overused trope.
  • 2nd. Resolute in life, oblivious in love. I also find this one irritating quite a bit, because when a girl pays so much attention to a boy, she never thinks that he might misunderstand, she basically does the same things she did for the boy she liked in the past, Shen Liyao, so where's the difference? Just because she thinks there is? But outsiders don't think as much, it's definitely sending mixed signals. Unlike the young master Fu who actually is the king of tsundere, also very clearly misinterpreted her approach, thus he was so beaten up by the time he found she doesn't really like him. But it also made her progress of feelings cheaper. There were parts that she admitted he was handsome, but so what? Authors usually spend so much time describing her as beautiful and gorgeous (though who cares?), but then one moment when he acts not according to routines she suddenly pays more attention to him and there is something in her heart. Of course they will be together later, of course it will play out, but if he wasn't ML of the story and if she never fell in love the situation is simply a mess. I just feel sorry for Yangxi in this situation.
  • 3rd. Overdramatisation. Speaking of Yangxi, giving ML a traumatic past is such an overused trope let's be honest. It also makes the actions of Mingxi even scummier, because the boy saw light in her while his life is shrouded in darkness, even if he is so wealthy the years of ab*se from the closest relatives is something else. Of course Mingxi's involvement will somehow change it, I mean the words of a girl to adult people who blamed a kid and they will become enlightened suddenly. Yangxi's story is truly a tragedy, but when the boy returns why would you put all the blame on earth on his shoulders? I wonder if his family would have preferred three dead bodies instead of two. Not only you two lost husband and son, but Yangxi not only lost his father and brother, but also witnessed it. I kinda dislike these unreasonable settings from people, I don't say people can't become mental like his mother, but honestly his grandfather is also peculiar in a situation, thus I'm very sceptical about overdramatised situations like these. The other parts that makes the story so unbalanced in my eyes is the next part, which also has teh taste of overdramatisation.
  • 4th. Character changes. Mingxi is described as this resolute person. But honestly the overall situation of her knowing that she can't approach the female protag Zhao Yuan, otherwise her own fate will become unpredictable, makes the situation with her family particular and too one-sided. Again, this is why I don't like the forced plots, like Zhao Yuan is loved just because she's the heroine and everyone should find her farts smelling like roses, but if you think carefully it's pretty sad that the relationship of Mingxi and her family will be stale because of it, unless she changes her fate. They may act like this not because they think so, but because the "plot" duh. I'm a person who likes a development and changes in characters. But with such settings it's impossible to wait for something you know won't come until a certain point and as predicted it happened, she's not ready to contact anyone from her family. My beef is Mingxi unlike others knows that Zhao Yuan is the heroine and her family is influenced by the halo like herself, so the situation becomes tricky that it's her family fault and not their fault at the same time, if you know what I mean. This is why the situation becomes one-sided with Mingxi severing ties with her family and her family "awakening" to things they have done and unfortunately it doesn't change for entire novel and this is why I think it's a big miss (the fleeting moment with her brother is a glimpse to promise of something else, but who knows if it will come later). There is too much mulling of "oh, we did so many things wrong" from her family, but why they can't have a redemption arc for example? The story overall becomes very unbalanced in my eyes, especially when I look back and think to myself, they were biased, for a reason, what they did is wrong, but compared to Yangxi it's nothing to talk about really, it's all influence of the heroine halo. It's not like they're dismissive, they were influenced by something out of their reach, now they realized everything they are pretty remorseful and emotional (all the time). Because the situation is getting dragged for so long and we actually see the change in her family, on the contrary to me Mingxi's attitude becomes a bit rigid. Yes, she doesn't need them, but I don't want her to forgive and become the best family again, but just simple contact to make your family less stressed (I mean where are kind heroines? She went through it herself, doesn't she know the best how shitty it was to be influenced by the plot? Where is a drop of empathy in this story).
I'm surprised that the best part for me may be the short period when they confessed to each other and were pretty cute in their communication with love and support.

Anyway, some may think I'm nitpicking, but I just have several questions when it comes to novels like this. What can I do except asking them. Especially when the story dragged the situation of her family for so long and when it came to ML he had short screen time to solve his family problems in comparison.

But honestly it's an unyielding 3 star for me. <<less

She learns to let go of the people who doesn't want her and start loving herself. She even did not think of having revenge. She just wants to live. She's truly an amazing person. Fly towards success and soar high Little Mask. Kudos!

Lesson learned:

If they doesn't want you then leave. Start loving and work hard for yourself first, then surely even without revenge everything will fall into place. Although you've let go, there will be definitely a person who will come to love you unconditionally.

I loved this novel!!!! It's probably one of my favorite dramedies I've read in a while. The FL is so decisive in her choices and it's incredibly easy to root for her happiness. All the side characters are interesting and you genuinely want to know their thoughts on the events taking place. The ML is such a breath of fresh air!!!!! I love how the FL teases him and the consistent bird metaphors the author kept bringing up throughout the novel. The ML has a pure maiden heart and the... more>> shenanigans he gets into made me laugh so many times. This is not your typical 'real daughter vs fake daughter' trope and it genuinely feels refreshing to watch everything unfold. These characters are realistic (considering the trope) and you get a real sense of satisfaction for the FL. Note: this is NOT a revenge story (not really) and the family drama + school romantic comedy is balanced. I know people have said that the FL is op, but I will respectfully disagree because I've read novels where there are actually op characters and this FL is not one of them!! I'm pretty sure I'll re-read this novel again in the future when I need a pick me up <3 <<less

This is a genuinely fun/comedic story.

Spoiler

The only time I cheated with spoilers was to check who the ML was because I really liked MCs dynamic with the 'bad boy', but I didn't actually believe the romance would be between them because he's introduced with vibrant red hair and the opposite of the typical ML personality (he's aggressive, he isn't attentive in class and his grades suck, and he doesn't respect his teachers).

I was surprised that MC's family wasn't actually terrible in comparison to most families in this type of story, and even more so that I actually wanted her to accept her brothers' apologies pretty early on. Its kind of hard to blame the family for treating her differently than the 'adopted' daughter whom they'd known and raised for 15 years.

I'm assuming this is meant as some type of parody to the 'false daughter is treated terribly after the real daughter is found' trope that I also happen to really enjoy LOL.

[collapse]

I loved this story, and I especially loved the ML. <<less

this is one of the novels that you shouldn't miss to read about.

it's a second chance in life story where you'll have your dose of laughter and tears. I've read this a handful of times but it never gets old I still laugh at the antics of the characters and cry about the heartbreaking family issues of the MC and ML.

full of fluff, banter and romance. You'll want to save a box of tissue beside you when reading the good parts

great translation quality from ray at isotls! Cheers~
