The best way to describe this story would be a more lighthearted version of Childhood Friend of the Zenith. That's not to say that this story doesn't have it's dark and moderately thought provoking moments. Personally, I prefer this novel over Zenith because the pacing for this is faster and the character interactions are more enjoyable.

My biggest complaint would be that the power scale for this novel feels a bit arbitrary. Most murim novels follow the convention 3rd rate -> 2nd rate -> 1st rate-> Peak/Master -> Supreme Peak/Grandmaster/Transcendent. This... more>> novel (or at least the translations) also uses this convention kind of. They constantly reiterate that before MC's regression, he was one of the strongest, having gone beyond the Peak and into the Transcendent Realm, but also that he dies before he could enter the Supreme Peak (they use Flowery Realm which I think corelates to supreme peak). It's a petty complain, but it it annoying because I see it in this novel so many times.

Overall:

MC has above room temperature IQ

MC actually makes progress with his romantic interests and isn't a simp

Romantic interests aren't annoying

Good pacing and translations.

A fun and simple read. There was nothing ground breaking, but it delivered what it said it would. 4.5/5 <<less

The summary above is pretty on point, but only for the first few chapters, since, by chapter 9 this situation has already ended.

Spoiler

But he does become a serial kidnapper as the story goes on... ^^'

[collapse]

Anyway, the MC has knowledge from before his regression, but at the same time, he's not that knowledgeable, since most things happened without his knowledge in his past life, so he starts uncovering and understanding things at the same time we do. Because of that, he's mostly going with the flow in this life, enjoying life while trying to prepare for the disaster that is the Heavenly Demon as best as he can, depending on the opportunities he encounters. This results in a good blend of serious/dark elements and lighthearted ones.

The characters are really likeable, whether it's the MC, FMC or the side characters introduced as the story develops (even the first ennemy was somehow likeable). The author really has a knack at creating characters.

Also, it's nice that, even though they really cared about each other in their past life, their relationship never developped past a deep friendship (though it seems she did try to confess, somehow, but he didn't get it). That way, the MC is not trying to rebuild his vanished love story but actually developing it right now. It's way less frustrating and bittersweet. And I like the fact that the women he liked in his past life were already disabled/disfigured by the time he met them. It makes his feelings more genuine.

Spoiler

If anyone is wondering, the harem is real.

Before he met Tang Sowol in his previous life, he had a budding romance (mostly s€x) with another woman. She died before confessing, and he met Sowol later. He saves her in this timeline, and she falls for him again. Though he doesn't intend to respond, Sowol gives him the green light later on.

There's also his previous life's master. She looks young, but she's quite old. Still, she has spent her youth fighting for revenge and has reversed her age hoping she'll get the chance to experience her youth once more. He doesn't see her that way, but he basically pulls a 'Korin Lork' on her, since his wording keeps giving her weird ideas. I think they get together later.

I really like it. <<less

Really enjoyable. I agree wholeheartedly that it's a less-intense version of Childhood Friend of the Zenith (which I also highly recommend, for the record). That's not to say this doesn't have some well-written or emotional moments, just that its highs aren't as high, and its blacks aren't as UTTER DEEP vantablack, if you will lol.

A couple of pros worth mentioning: The comedy is pretty good without ever ruining a seen with its timing, and the Kidnapping gets played for gags. As mentioned, he kidnapped fiancé (title drop, ofc), he... more>> kidnapped another old love interest, got himself kidnapped intentionally by a third (it's the least defined relationship from his past), and in recent chapters has even enlisted his waifu to kidnap a pair of star-crossed lovers lol.

As for the characters, it's all pretty adorable and romantic. He's physically unable to talk about his regression, but leaving that aside he manages to make the most of his return, overturning negative futures. The women in his life are pretty wonderful, and all have defined characteristics that mean you won't confuse them. Of special note to you fellow harem enjoyers, the wife (fiance, as of now actually) is very much ok with him having concubines - long before he even know it was a thing, she's been subtly encouraging things. (Nothing better than when the lead wife is helping you set up the harem!!)

Other than that, I really REALLY like the MC. He's clearly fighting above his level, but the existence of actually highest level Masters running around (I avoided using the term 'peak masters' because that's an actual level, and there are higher), makes for an interesting 'OP Protagonist'. He's strong, but godly and unrivaled? Absolutely not. But the best part about him is his mindset. He's not crippled by trauma, he's literally used it to forge himself going forward, and yet he's also not opposed to actually FIXING said trauma even if it means he has to find a new way forward. Combined with the fact he's in an Orthodox Sect (Tang Clan) with actually GOOD people, I really enjoy the environment and setting. It's suitably dark and chaotic enough as all Murim/Wuxia must be, but not GRIMDARK that sometimes they descend to.

Bonus points for having the Orthodox not be 'absolutely corrupt that is basically evil but pretending to be righteous'. The Orthodox isn't perfect of course, but it still is loads better than the Unorthodox (mostly shortsighted, useless rabble with a single sect that has a semblance of control) and the main big-bad, the Demonic Sect (absolutely insane, united by purpose, with all the most shady practices and filled with zealots willing to su*cide, and of course led by the Heavenly Demon who's the biggest threat.)

Overall, I really enjoy the story as a nice harem story with a great MC who's not obnoxious in any single, overriding way. He's not a perfect, unassailable superhuman of course, but as a MAIN CHARACTER, he's exactly who I want. Not annoying, not dense as a black hole, not crushed by trauma, just a mature guy who's making the most of his regression to make people happy. Oh, and he's obsessed with swords, and has major sword talent, but not a body that's been blessed with resources or talent or Qi reserves or anything. He's just SKILLED (and also experienced due to his regression). Oh, and he's self-aware. God that should be a trait that we can search by. Need more MCs that are self-aware. Good stuff. <<less

Nothing intresting and new, a std story of a reincarnated protag who is op compared to what he shd be restablising their relationship with a super op fMC who is still at the infancy of their power level.

And hijinks

Most of the time I don't care Abt novelty in plot, but having read around 20 chs, I find this stuff uttery boring plot wise, The only thing that is working for this novel is the cute relationship between two leads and the MC and fMC family.

As of now there is... more>> no meat in the story and it reads like a slop, which while nothing wrong with such story telling. It is not what I look for ina. Story so I can't give it anything more than 5/10. Avg stuff done competently nothing outstanding. <<less

This is exactly what the title and the poster suggest it is.

And I mean it as a huge compliment.

There is an even balance of romance and action, with some comedy in between.

... more>> "Action", however, would not be the right term from my perspective. For me, it's "Martial arts bullshit".

This novel left me with an amazing first impression! Nothing terribly exciting happened after the start, however.

It pains me to come to the realisation that I should go do literally anything else instead of reading this. And probably should not touch anything revolving around cultivation ever again.

As you can see, my negative impression comes from the personal taste, so if you don't mind "an average story", you should try it yourself! <<less
