It doesn't really pique me much.

I find it quite bland and too abrupt, not to mention, its superficial. Brainless characters seem to fall head over heels when mentioning MC. ML is annoying and its like the author just made up some random stuff and evolved them into problems to probably spice it up but they just made my impression of it worse.

I was only three chapters on before skimming through, dropped it after 6 chapters more.

I just really love the mutual antagonism between the MC and ML. The author handles it really well, and I don't feel like the MC is weak or needs to be sheltered from the 'big bad' ML, since they both have very strong personalities.

I find it really amusing how the ML insists to himself that he's straight while he's obsessed with trying to find a way to look at the MC's private parts without getting killed for his audacity, to see if they are as beautiful as the rest of him.

ML clearly acknowledges to himself that his interest in the MC goes beyond the bounds of normal behavior for a straight man, but when he sort of brings up the issue to his dad, he gets a typical clueless straight guy reassurance that his obsession is actually just his loyalty to the Emperor (the MC.)

I actually give it 4.5 ⭐

Whoaaaa, what a journey this danmei was! Usually I write the review only after I have fully completed the novel but when I feel like I might take a break and read the extras later, I give the review first, so that I can fully convey what I felt while reading the story.

Ok so lemme start, there's this author's note which said that after the first 20 chapters the writing gets better. When I read that I assumed that the thing where everyone... more>> falls in love and lusts after our MC will stop after the 20th chapter mark but I was wrong. It didn't stop there. For me, the writing also didn't improve right after the 20 chapters, I dont exactly recall when it got better but it gets better as u read on.

The points that I didn't really enjoy in this danmei are -

1. How everyone lusted after our MC. Ofcourse I enjoy MCs that are sooooo beautiful that everyone goes googoo gaga over them but there's a limit 😂 I mean this story somewhat reminded me of "sick beauty (rebirth) " one. In that too everyone was going crazy after the MC and the MC just remains oblivious. Gosh that one made me soooo mad, this one is better compared to that one in this aspect. Atleast after quite a lot of chapters it gets bearable.

2. I love slow romance, I totally enjoy when they r still not together and there's this sizzling chemistry. I think the reason why I was able to stay and read this story so engagingly was mainly cause the couple still hadn't got together after many chapters. But then there was this point where even I started getting irritated over how the MC was just being so hard hearted and not showing much softness at all.

Anyways, what I liked in this story was how there was slow romance and also how our MC is so different than other transmigrated MCs in historical danmeis. He is strong (not talking physically 😂), ambitious and doens't always need the ML to save him at all.

Yuanbai and Xue Yuan are a POWER COUPLE! They each have their own merits. I liked this. And also idk if there's info about the MCs past or why he transmigrated into the extras but I hope there is! Cause I have strong suspicion that the MC maybe a soldier or someone of very big authority or Power in his past life. Cause this is the only explanation that would make sense to me. I mean why else did he became such a capable emperor so well? Why did he know so much and handled the politics so nicely. And also just his attitude and personality and the way he is in the relationship, evrything just gives me the feeling that he must have been a soldier. Ofc I'm not sure, I can be totally wrong too but I wish I'm not. I really hope my guess is right. Anyways I'll find out if I'm right or not when I read the extras.

Rn I'm not sure if I'll be reading the extras rn or if I'll read them later. But whenever I'm done with them, I'll update here! Anywho this review is my longest review yet and woah I'm tired now. Before I end this review I just gotta say, this was an amazing and interesting journey, my mood while reading this novel was like 📈📉 and I was thoroughly invested.

I rn still haven't been hit by the melancholic feeling that I always have after completing a danmei. It will come a little bit later I think 😂 but yeah, this is a very good novel, it has it's likes and it's down points too but all in all, everyone should give it a try! It's worth reading atleast once. Very interesting!

I wish Yuanbai and Xue Yuan a happily ever after! May the Great Heng empire thrives and may they live joyfully and peacefully! ♥️

okay so now I've read all the extras now. Well, not all exactly... I actually didn't completely read the modern world extras. I've finished reading all the ancient world extras and even the last 2 regent ones. For the modern extras I read 2 and then just couldn't go on. The reason is, I just couldn't take the BS that they didn't recognise each other quickly. They have been together for decades and they knew the other was acting really familiar but they still couldn't recognise wtf 😒 and also even when they did recognise each other they keep pretending and flirting, the author did write in her note she just wanted to write bout 2 boys being ambiguous and flirting even tho knowing it's each other. I personally couldn't take that nonsense and also the author really needs to understand what "more is bad too" means. I mean.... come tf on the story wasn't short by any means and thats alright but so long extras too?! I lost patience and like I said the modern extras irritated me so after reading two of them I just skipped the other ones and simply read the last 2 regent ones.

Aside from this there was no explanation as to why Yuanbai was such a good emperor.... they didn't tell what profession he was in, in the future 😭 I would still like to think he was a commander in the army.) <<less

The good things:

Decent writing and an even better translation. TL helped annotate many details, and the story goes into a decent amount of history w/o it dragging it down. I like the dynamic of the MC and ML (another reviewer said it best, SM nonrelationship) a lot of tension between the two when they interact.

The amount of ignoring the setting I have to do for their dynamic to work was really hard for me to do, to the point I had to stop. ML keeps overstepping his position to allow these interactions to happen. Especially in front of all the guards and servants

He once pulls the MC onto a horse and gallops off! Away from all the guards that were standing there and then they give chase. ML and MC get to do their 'will they, wont they' thing, and only THEN does the guards catch up. No serious punishment is given.

I think this would have been a fine story beat if there was any recognition from the other people around the MC about how much special favor the ML is given. But it has yet to have been brought up even after the ML keeps harassing MC a few times now. <<less

!!!!!!!!!!!! What a novel, wow, just wow. St first you think this revolves more around political drama but hll no, IT'S SO ROMANTIC?! like ksbfkslfowiedjjxldld my heart really did weird thinks, and suddently I started crying cuz I know I will never get what these two have.

If u are in for, empire building, political drama and sweet sweet fervent romance with some small bittersweet moments that will make you sigh of how beautiful is love, THIS IS FOR U, GIVE IT A CHANCE.

Also smth that I loved a lot was... more>> that finally we see a shou with a waaayyy higher status and power than gong. Even tho he has a delicate body, he is the emperor u know? He is also a genius in what he does thanks to his 21st modern guy mind and his studies, so, cheff kiss. Also the ML, talk about obsessive behaviour. I read a lot of yandere characters, but, seriously this is the first time I've seen a ML bare his heart on his sleeve despite being a wild spirit. He is obsessive to the point of going crazy just by sniffing the MC's fragance, or just by cherishing one strand of his hair, and many other dirty things that I found hilarious. And he is soooooooooooooooooo in love with him.... that It's crazy how devoted he is. Sigh sigh, seriously what a character. <<less

Thank you so much to all the translators.

This story and "wait for me after school" are my most favorite BL stories ever ! The best written BL I have ever read and I have read A LOT!

The two ML are very interesting and refreshing and go beyond they archetypes, their relationship is well balanced, the court plot is a cessible to all and won't bore even those not very interested in them, and the homewrecker are not overly annoying and the main ones learn their place and respect themselves.

Like many other reviewers, the ML is not my fave, and if I'm ever unfortunate to be entangled someone like him in real life, I'd make sure to send him to prison. But he is indeed the best fit for this MC, and the kingdom-building and statecraft elements of the story are very good, balanced across a variety of different fields, although those who like the grittiest of gritty realism may still want to look elsewhere. Instead, the UST is off the charts, and the author's handling of the lives... more>> of the few female characters much richer and more subtle than the vast majority of what I've seen in the BL genre. 5 stars. <<less

Another work of Wang sanshan that I love sooo much

I can't get enough of the CP's sweetness, cuddles, their bickerings also power couple fr! A plot about emperor wanting what's best for his country but with well written politics, the strats, war and other country conflicts really makes you intrigued. Plus lots of hilarious moments. From start to finish there was no dull moment for me, it really felt like I was there to witness history. The ideal way that you want to do to deal with ancient time as... more>> the emperor when you have modern knowledge. The main story ending wasn't grand but it showed what's life.

Gu Yuanbai is ONLY physically weak but his overall being gives dominance, he's so wise and indeed a Beauty with brains (some of his personality reminds me of my beloved Jiang Luo). Effects of seeing his beauty shouldnt be a surprise since it's in the title lol. GY just entered in my top beautiful charac list. Xue Yuan is my son here that makes me cheer for him and wants to smack him at the same time esp of his shamelessness, he's the manly maiden in love. XY is literally the guy falling down stairs meme everytime GY smiles lmao

My fav arc would be

rebels with Li xian (i think the name) as spy was interesting and XY beheading the other rebel leader. (And in this arc where the cp did their first touching in the cave).

The locust/nomad arc esp bcz of XY sending letters and rushing back to GY lol. And how the people and military from that border didn't feel abandoned anymore, the cotton being used gave me excitement.

I love the anti corruption movement and Xixia arc too was interesting, that earthquake gave me small heart attack ngl lol

Not only I love the whole just to entertain me but also learned lots of stuff (from tl's notes thank u).

The other characs got their use too, Chu Wei from the beginning was likeable but on my 3/4th progress of the novel, he was just ok. Everyone was really into GY's beauty, tho I like how not each and everyone desires him.

More about the CP, their chemistry is sooo good even in the extras (winks). I thought at the start XY would have many equal rivals but nah, others can't compare to XY. No doubt the best for GY vice versa. The CP discovering love was great snd natural (for me). Glad this wasn't harem (sorry I dont like harem)

XY being clingy was too cute and how he carries GY was just too sweet. I love the wolf cub gifts and jade ring and how GY unconsciously cherishing it. Got me teary when the 2 wolves died of old age (sad, they didnt chomp off prince he's fingers)

I was worried at first on how the CP would do on bed (might lead to GY's demise) but XY really was careful to GY's body and so happy that they reached I think to 40-50+y. O. Before GY died and XY followed, and met again in modern timeline. GY revealing who he is to XY was refreshing too. Every time XY shows his yandere side and dirty talk comments got me laughing fr. ASKING FOR THE BATHWATER LMAO

GY's harshness before he fully submits his heart to XY makes me wanna cry and laugh at the same time

GY may be harsh to XY but still stands up for him. GY admitting his love to XY made me say "finally" and became proud of my son XY.

Gu Ran being there even for a small moment as their adopted child was cute too.

Modern timeline was so sweet too, XY got the courage to propose and even got to meet GY's real, fr parents. (Video calls were wild tho). Would love a scene of same s*x marriage tho, since it was hinted that Father Gu, a politician, was pushing for it

The reveal where og XY doenst have feeling for Chu Wei and only loves GY was great

I usually love anything I read but this time I have to agree with the low reviews, besides that the end is really disappointing, and that each time there was a problem about politics Su Mochi somehow manged to solve everything pretty fast and with no big trouble AT ALL, the novel doesn't make you suffer even a little bit, wich kinda makes it boring, the only suffering I had were the s3x scenes; at least with Gu something dude he was kinda enjoying it, in some parts with the... more>> other ML too but I have so many questions, why does he hates it most of the times? Why doesn't he stops them if he is actually suffering? How can he get tired with one round if he has interc**rses regularly? Does he even like to f*ck? Why can't he sometime switch? Like dude why don't you try to switch sometimes if you hate it so much?Please the gangbang & trheesome scenes were terrible and just sad, also I really hope this is a translation problem but the random explicit/modern words while reading smut completely ruined the mood. <<less

I gave it 10 chapters to see what's going on an unsurprisingly, I could say nothing.

For the ten chapter, all I see is a dying emperor living in a magicless world, which meant the only way for him to get better is a miracle, it also did not include what illness he has. After that it was his affair to take talents and scholars, then meeting with random side characters, having various interaction with them and that's it.

Here we have a transmigrated emperor who had already calm the palace for three years. Then he was dying and he was still continuing being a good emperor.

It was such a boring premise really, there were no interesting or compelling motivation, there is a goal but it felt pointless. The whole story really felt pointless.

I kept asking where is the story going. What's the end goal? What's the conflict? The problem? The concurrent solutions? It really felt like it was going somewhere, but I don't know where.

To be fair, I gave it a ten chapter to see if there is something in it that is a saving grace for the story. Though the characters are interesting, they were held down by the no directions plot. Don't tell me the plot is for them to enter the palace and be officials and that's it? It just doesn't felt rewarding as a reader. It was not something I was interested to spent my time with.

The interactions in the palace is no way boring and the interactions of the characters were actually deep, they appeared to have a mind on their own. I may be interested to learn them act, but I just don't see where the story is going on.

I always said this to writers, please set up a backbone goal or motivation for the story. No matter how much good you are in writing characters, it would bogged down if your plot has no direction.

I keep asking where the plot was going to, is it when the ML was in the palace doing whatever. Or is it when the ML and original protagonist was reinacting their original story. Or was it the love story of the MC and ML.

I felt this reasons are so weak to let me continue reading it. It didn't felt grounded to romance, it felt it was more in line with palace struggles. But where was the catch. At the start of the story, the MC already made a lot of achievement in the palace, the current problem is his health and his dream to be a good ruler. While that was commendable, I kept asking 'that's it?'.

I really want to continue but after reading 10 chapters, the author failed to established what should be established, whatever their goal was still beyond me.

It really had a good potential but it felt like the author was spending chapters for set-ups or for the slice of life vibe but with the other characters as the center. It did not have much foundation to hold it up, it felt scattered, and I felt bad that it was. I really felt it could be an epic read. But as a writer, if you can't do the bare minimum, then I will be bound to be dissapointed. Honestly I felt cheated. <<less

early review because I just wanna say how beautifully written this is, well, it's a bit of an exaggeration but it's not completely false either.

i found MC too ruthless at times, though, the was necessary to keep his life but there are times where he himself realize that he could become a tyrant if he's not careful. With how violent he was with ml, I know some might say "oh, that little physical injury is nothing than him being dead" (because he's a threat to the throne) with the... more>> fact that MC is from modern times and not have some psychological burden with inflicting damage to other people is concerning, I would even believe it if it's xue yuan who's actually from the modern times and not MC because of how much he fits the world concept

that is not to say that xue yuan is normal, rather, he's on the crazier and darker side, he's a menace. What I mean is that because he acts way too unconventional for the ancient times that he seems to be the transmigrated one and not MC.

aside from that the series is a good read that you should give a try <<less

it’s a political story where our MC wakes up as an emperor in the past and has to take control of the court, which takes place 3 years prior to the novel start. By the time the novel starts the MC is fully immersed in his role as emperor.

The ML by chapter 45 does seem to have started to fall for the MC, but so far it seems more along the lines of looks then personality, but it’s getting there.

I think this novel requires a lot of patience. I only read three chapters and, with very little patience, I ended up quitting *sneezing-face*. I’m not sure if I’m just not understanding properly or what. But I can’t get into it at all. So... for now, this shall be left unread and unrated.
