I Thought I Had Reincarnated in a Musou Game, But It Turns Out This Is a Hardcore Grimdark Game

Description

Imagine being reincarnated into the world of a game, without any knowledge of its original story.

In a world where the power of demons grew stronger after the death of the hero, one rogue ignored the original storyline and became obsessed with hunting demons. This obsession spelled their doom.

The protagonist (originally a man) had one goal: “Skill Development.” For this purpose, demon cores, the demons’ weak points, provided the best nourishment. So why hesitate to kill demons who prey on humans?

The novel is honestly... pretty darn good. The MC is very brutal and cruel, someone that you'd normally find in a korean novel I guess (but actually a pyschopath and she knows it). She absolutely merciless to all her enemies, actually she's kinda terrifying in that regard. But the interesting thing is that unlike a lot of protagonists with the same disposition, she's perfectly aware that her actions are not considered good in any way, and accepts that she's essentially an evil that takes out other evils.

The novel I feel... more>> is best at displaying the playfulness and not only physical brutality but also the emotional brutality of every fight. The MC doesn't just tear heads apart or tortures by chopping off limbs, she's actively emotionally toying with every single demon she meets, forcing them to kill their brethren, using their loved one's weapons against them, actually taking a demon's family hostage and killing the, one by one if they don't given info to them. Her method is simply to inflict as much despair as possible simply because she enjoys doing that. She's an example of a demon to demons. It's kinda refreshing to see such an unrepentant brutal and manipulative protag that's somehow forcing the entire game story into a more happy one somehow.

Spoiler

Also, multiple reincarnated people, one more so far. This one knows they're in a game, and actually treats everything like a game, thus she's willing to sacrifice humans to get a "good ending" where demons coexist with humans even if most of the population must die. However she ends up being absolutely horrified when she finds out the other reincarnated person and what they do. It straight up forces her to accept that she's in a real place and there's nothing more terrifying then the MC

[collapse]

Demons are also portrayed as somewhat similar to humans in both culture and values, but they have less ethics so while you feel sympathy for the actions MC does to them, you also can't help but internally agree with her actions at times. <<less

This review is heavily subjective

The only good demon is a dead demon

In a fantasy world where heroes and demon lords determine the balance of power, what happens when the hero dies? Without a hero, humanity faces the threat of demons running rampant. This novel explores that concept by flipping the script: instead of the usual hero vs. Evil, we follow a protagonist who becomes the demons' worst nightmare. She does to them what they do to humans, blackmail, schemes, threats, kidnapping, committing a long list of morally questionable acts. But... more>> is it justified? That depends on your moral compass.

Yes, she kills demon family members and threatens them, but demons are humanity's sworn enemies. Is she wrong for doing evil to evil? The story adds complexity by showing demons not as mindless monsters but as beings with social structures, morals, and lives that mirror humans, blurring the line between good and evil.

The novel brings a refreshing twist to the typical reincarnated-in-a-game trope. Unlike many MCs in similar stories, she isn't aware she's in a game, making her journey feel more grounded and raw. Her approach is ruthlessly pragmatic, she knows demons are dangerous, and the lives of innocents are at risk daily. There's no romanticized happy ending in sight, just survival.

This realism gives the story a grittier edge, setting it apart from more traditional game-based narratives. The MC isn't seeking glory; she's simply navigating a brutal world where survival demands ruthless action. The tension between moral ideals and brutal necessity is explored throughout the story.

The protagonist isn't your typical arrogant anti-hero either. She avoids fame to prevent becoming a target and uses her appearance as an innocent child to manipulate every situation in her favor. She's ruthless but not without morals. Sure, she commits genocide against demon children, but she has clear boundaries when it comes to humans. In many ways, she's like Goblin Slayer, but instead of goblins, she hunts demons with human-like intelligence and appearance. The story makes you question what defines a hero or a villain.

PS. The power system and characters are solid, though the world-building feels a bit lacking, likely due to the current low chapter count. The story is primarily set in an academy, which may expand later on. I'd personally rate it 8.5/10; it's pretty good.

The setting is also intriguing. Humans level up by killing demons, and demons do the same by killing humans. Plus, each "holy sword" has unique abilities, adding depth to the power system.

Lastly, there are some noticeable translation mistakes, particularly with pronouns, but they're minor and hopefully will be fixed in future updates. <<less

Don't misunderstand. I Thought I Had Reincarnated in a Musou Game is not about an anti-hero converting the grimdark world from evil with a healthy dose of war crimes. Instead, it is a deconstruction of the grimdark isekai where the overpowered psychopath Sharon treats her new and unfamiliar reality like a hack-and-slash and mu*ders her way through designated-bad-guys to invincibility. She doesn't care about fairness or injustice; Sharon is the soldier that joins the military just to have an excuse to shoot living people. A "thug." Her understanding of ethics... more>> exists only to mark the appropriate enemies she can kill without ruining her powerleveling.

It's not deep, and there's no lesson to be told about morality or society. Just a serial killer in a world of self-righteous serial killers. <<less

Finally some good novel

Here's what I like about this novel:

1 - The MC isn't acting like a little b**ch, she wont hesitate on using torture, blackmail, and even mentally manipulating demons

... more>> 2 - The side character is interesting enough especially monica (you will know once you read the novel why)

3 - The best way to describe the MC is she is just like goblin slayer but more sadistic so from the perspective of her enemy she is like the devil

4 - Its so entertaining to read how the enemy is acting like they are the side character of a horror movie every time the MC is hunting them

A very refreshing read overall im very excited for the next chapter, just give it a try and maybe you will like it too. <<less

The novel is selling some pretty horrible idealogy as *fine* though I appreciete the main character having character flaws these flaws aren't written as flaws but more of a upside/ not a whimp. Justifying everything Sharon herself does by that logic

The scenes where Sharon is hunting demons is very fun though but keep ethics and morality out. Because these kind of arguments are whats used to justify actual genocide irl just a few steps more.

Like its already saying Goblins in goblin slayer isnt evil.

This is some deep rooted "change nothing"... more>> philosophy. Why on earth isnt the f*cked up world setting being disected but glorified???

The problem isnt that Sharon is flawed but there are entire paragrapshs trying to justify what she is doing. If you write a morally dubious character you DONT justify unless you selling an Ideology <<less
