But in my eyes, she was the lovely princess that I had raised to the best of my abilities.

The story begins with a forced relationship between an emperor and a noblewoman serving as a personal companion to a princess. Companion feels more accurate than maid, as the female lead (FMC) is a noble lady in her own right, though subordinate in court hierarchy. Unfortunately, despite the premise's potential for tension and political intrigue, the execution fell flat for me.

As someone with low standards when it comes to C/Knovels, I still found the storytelling lackluster. The narrative progression felt uninspired. What little political intrigue the story attempts is superficial... more>> at best, serving more as a backdrop than a meaningful plot driver.

The translation was okay, but the word choices made a lot of the dialogue sound stiff and awkward. Conversations didn't flow naturally, and it was especially noticeable during the smut scenes. The smut just felt forced, like something you'd stumble across in a rushed Wattpad fic.

Characterization, particularly of the male lead, was another weak point. The FMC is written with unwavering loyalty and a deep sense of duty toward the princess she serves, to the extent of offering herself to the emperor for the pricess's protection. While this could have made for a compelling dynamic, the male lead himself never truly embodies the domineering, morally gray archetype often found in similar stories. The kind you know is toxic but you can't help being drawn to anyway. Instead, he came off as flat, occasionally annoying, and lacking the kind of commanding presence that makes these characters so addictive to read about. It felt like the writing wanted him to be that kind of ML, but the execution didn't match the intention

There are moments of attempted tension, scattered smut scenes, and court politics, but none are developed deeply enough to leave a lasting impression. I genuinely wanted to enjoy this, as I'm usually a fan of problematic male leads and dark romance tropes, but this novel lacked both emotional depth and guilty-pleasure indulgence.

Ultimately, it's an okay read if you're simply looking to pass the time, but it falls short of offering anything memorable or satisfying either as a dramatic court intrigue or a steamy romance. <<less

This is a novel I can't tell if I like or not, and will probably just see how it ends.

For reference, its dark romance; R@pe and ab*se (s*xual and not) are present in this. It's for a target demographic and If you dislike it, just means you probably aren't in said demographic.

Writing and translation in this are fine, writing is nothing beyond expectations, but the translation flows really smooth (reading on rainofsnow), and I'm thankful for the translator and editor doing a really good job. Aside from the occasional interesting... more>> phrase, it's writing is above average at most. Nothing really wrong with it though.

I thought the concept handled matters well, but the main reason which I liked this, was due to Ophelia (the princess) and Hannah's (the FL) adorable relationship. It's really nice, and was written in a pretty good way.

The ML ; Locar, the emperor. For starters, he's a shithead. For about the first 80 chapters or so, you will not like this guy at all (and maybe beyond that). They don't try to downplay what he does that much, but he treats the FL like shit, and has an unlikeable personality.

The FL ; Hannah, the princess's handmaid. She's really sweet, and although she's 'weak', she makes up for it with how she is smart with her decisions and her bond with Ophelia is so sweet. She's very mature and stands up for herself, even after making a dumbass decision.

Now, we learn that Locar actually ignores Ophelia aside from the fact that she's disabled, because of her resemblence to the old empress who died during giving birth to her.

Except, jokes on you because then they soon reveal he killed the empress after she gave birth to Ophelia. Not sure why the hell this is dismissed. But I won't go into much detail as its been mentioned through someone else and hasn't really had any depth.

Also, there's a 2nd ML. Yes, he's nicer, more mature, and a better match. No, he probably won't get a romantic relationship he deserves.

I think it's okay, and if you like this sort of thing, should just try it and see. <<less
