“””Please help me get together with your childhood friend!!”””

It’s been 20 years since I was reincarnated as a background extra who didn’t even appear in that tr*shy dating sim game.

After barely managing to secure the coveted role of the protagonist’s childhood friend, the heroines started approaching me. They asked me to help them get together with the male protagonist.

In the end, for the sake of my comfortable future, I agreed to become their love consultant (for a small “fee” of course) and help them find love.

But as time went on… the way they looked at me was starting to feel a little off…?

Alright, I'm popping in to drop a review for a novel that completely blindsided me in the best way possible. The story starts with a premise we've seen before: a guy gets reincarnated into a dating sim he barely played, not as the hero, but as the hero's totally unremarkable best friend, Mars. His grand plan is to just ride the protagonist's coattails to a comfortable, easy life. Of course, things go completely off the rails almost immediately. The three main heroines of the game, a princess, a saint, and... more>> a duke's daughter, all decide that the best way to win the hero's heart is to hire his best friend as their personal love consultant. This is where the story really takes off, and it's hilarious watching Mars try to juggle the conflicting demands of these powerful women while trying to keep his clueless protagonist friend from messing everything up.

What I really loved is that this story is so much more than just a rom-com. Just when you think you've settled in for a lighthearted academy story, the plot takes a sharp turn and introduces some genuinely dark and high-stakes action. It adds a layer of mystery and danger that I wasn't expecting, and it balances the comedy and romance perfectly. The main character, Mars, is fantastic. He's cynical and just wants to be lazy, but he's also secretly competent and can't help but step up when people are in trouble. His internal monologues are the best part of the novel. The heroines are also great; they start off as familiar tropes, but they all get a surprising amount of character development and become much more than just love interests for the original protagonist. The pacing is excellent, moving quickly between funny school-life moments and intense, serious conflicts that keep you hooked. The writing is smooth and easy to read, making it perfect for a long reading session. It starts with a fun, tropey idea and builds it into a genuinely compelling story with a great mix of action, comedy, and character drama. <<less

The whole starting point of this story (an unremarkable man becoming closer to high-class women while helping them fulfill their first love) is a lie, because the MC is a completely unreliable narrator.

So, at first, this is what you are told (narrated mostly from the MC's point of view) : the MC, Mars, is an ordinary guy who, in a previous life (that he described as 'I died and got reincarnated in a game world, that's all there is to say about my life. See how average I am!'), bought... more>> a dating sim game, tried it, hated it and got a refund. After that he died and got reincarnated into that game's world, even though he doesn't know anything about it, except for the main cast and setting.

He remembered his previous life only after meeting the protagonist, Pollo, the son of the best swordman in the country (an 'Aura Lord') and an extremely handsome guy, whose county borders Mars' father's very poor barony. Mars is very average looking, which, in this dating sim world, is the closest to 'ugly', so he's like air to others.

In order to succeed in life, he decides to make Pollo enter the main storyline; that way Pollo will get together with one of the heroines, and Mars, as his best friend, will be able to effortlessly collect the crumbs (aka money/opportunities).

They go to the Academy and the three heroines instantly fall for Pollo (which is strange considering it's a dating sim game; were you supposed to convince your own character to fall for the heroines who are already in love with you?).

Spoiler
    • At first, the 2nd princess of the Empire just wants to pull the son of the Aura Lord into her faction in order to help her become the next Empress, but upon seeing his face she decides he should become her husband.
    • The 2nd daughter of the most powerful duke in the country and a great mage, always dreamed of marrying a handsome man. Since he is the most handsome man she has ever seen, she believes he is meant to be her husband.
    • The saintess has a 2D mentality: those who sacrifice themselves for others are good, anyone else is bad (not evil, just bad), so upon seeing Pollo's selfless attitude she starts liking him.
[collapse]

They then go to our average MC and order him to give them information (yeah, their first impression is the worst) on his outstanding best friend. Mars sees that as an opportunity to make money for his territory and decides to become their love consultant (something he is not even good at; JP manga level).

Will they then slowly fall for him as he earnestly helps them? No.

It's like the author started writting a JP highschool romance wish fulfilling story, but couldn't put up with the ordinary dull JP MC and slow progress, so he turned Mars into your usual KR fantasy world MC, completely changing the course of the story after just a few chapters.

Spoiler

It turns out that Mars is nothing like what he portrays himself to be...

First of all, he's a direct disciple of Pollo's father and the second Aura Lord in the country (and the third in history, apparently), which basically makes him anything but average; just anouncing it would make the opportunities (to marry and get money) pour in. Secondly, his past life was not average at all. Thirdly (he didn't know that part, though), his father was a personal shadow guard of the Emperor and his mother is a talented swordwoman from a renown school. Fourthly, because of his past life, Mars is extremely dense (he tends to not want to connect with people and think he can't be loved) but he's, in fact, very popular. Also, the one with an inferiority complex is not Mars but Pollo, who can't reach Mars' level in swordmanship; which might be the main reason he doesn't wish to be in a relationship right now. Last but not least, apparently, Mars is handsome but people have a hard time judging his Asian features and, since he keeps a low profile and is always near Pollo, they tend to forget his face and judge him average looking.

So, despite whatever the MC says at first, he's an OP abnormal guy who could easily seduce women and make a living. He just doesn't want to face the hassle. The heroines don't fall for him because they spend time with him and warm up to him but because he saves them. They fall very quickly too (since the author seemed to not have been able to wait to reveal to the world that his MC was hiding his strength... I mean, it's a trope I don't usually like, but why put it there if you were going to reveal it so quickly, not just to the heroines but to the whole world?).

As a result, it's not the expected cliche story about an ordinary guy who makes heroines fall for him through everyday kindness and support, but a cliche story about an OP hidden character (who doesn't stay hidden for long) who fights evil forces while unknowingly making girls fall for him left and right.

[collapse]

So far it's relatively entertaining but quite average. <<less
