Liam Sera Banfield is a reincarnator.

He had reincarnated into a fantasy world of magic and swords, but at the time the civilization had already been making advancements into outer space.

The setting takes place in an intergalactic empire, a space opera-like universe where humanoid weapons and spaceships battle.

Liam, who had been reborn into an aristocratic family in a monarchic society, has the ambition to one day become an evil lord.

In his previous life, Liam had unfortunately lost everything and died in despair.

— It’s foolish to live for others.

— I will live for myself.

Keeping those feelings in his heart, he has decided to fulfill his goal, but is instead worshipped as a virtuous ruler due to his difference in values.

Will Liam be able to become an evil lord?

This novel is satisfying. I wouldn't say it's good, but it's satisfying. For those of you that would like to enjoy a parody of the typical OP protagonist who has a ridiculous amount of plot armor then you'll enjoy this.

I'm not going to get into the characters, actual plot lines, or anything like that cause I see this novel as more of a parody of the OP MC novels that use a lot of clichés and repeated tropes as a whole.

The author utilizes misunderstandings in order to create a false... more>> sense of confidence for the MC, who then performs feats that would otherwise be impossible. They use it in a way that it seems they're making fun of the typical novels out there that allow the story to progress utilizing repeated tropes from similar novels, which is entertaining for me.

On the other hand, this novel could be said to have a couple of running gags that repeat themselves. Which people can find irritating or boring after seeing once or twice. If that's you then I wouldn't read this with high expectations.

I put a description of the jokes in the spoiler.

Spoiler

Liam, the MC, always finds himself in a situation where he's in the underdog position or in a situation where he needs a convenient opportunity to make use of, so that he can overcome the odds. This is all thanks to a 'helpful' Guide providing support, despite the Guide hoping for the opposite to happen. Liam then goes on to procure a lot of gains that help him increase his own strength and influence.

Another one would be that he attempts to act as an evil lord that selfishly indulges himself on the suffering of his people, but all his efforts to do so leads to the opposite effect. His people are becoming more prosperous with his every action and he's being hailed as a hero in his country due to his noble actions. Mostly due to him being unable to stand witnessing evil because in his past life he was often taken advantage of, despite wanting to be evil himself.

[collapse]

So overall you should be able to enjoy this novel, but you might end up getting bored of it after reading for a while. So I'd say it's not necessarily too good, but satisfying if you consider that it's a parody. <<less

Like many other reviewers said, the execution of this story is rubbish. There's no plot direction; it feels like things just happen around the MC without anything to connect them. Things are introduced and then forgotten soon after. Things that feel like they should be important are only briefly mentioned or just happens in the background. Characters are bland at best and absolutely infuriating at worst. You'd think that the tragic backstory the MC has would force him to be at least a little bit competent, but no, he's still... more>> an absolute moron whose only saving grace is a particularly thick set of plot armor.

This novel honestly feels the same as the author's previous works only with a different set of paint which is quite telling of the author's skills as a writer. If you enjoyed the author's previous works you might like this, but this feels like the kind of novel you'd read only if you didn't have anything else left. <<less

Let us see.... trying not to spoil.

The novel is quite good, don't expect a real *conflict*, more than it being a plot armor its more of the novel focusing in the delusions of the MC being an evil lord. Therefore if that kind of easy situations displease you then just give it a quick try/skim to be sure.

Same author of OtoMob so if you like that one it may be a good comparison in the style.

The translation is great and if there are any mistakes it usually gets taken care... more>> of soon after reporting it, so your mental sanity does not get consumed like when reading some MTL.

More info is in the description, I can only say I enjoy this very much. <<less

tl;dr1 : It's absolute garbage, I love it.

Spoiler

honestly I started reading this with a lot of hope. I liked the author's other works. I enjoyed reading dragoon, sevens, and otome mob, and had I hoped I would enjoy this in the same level as those other works. Sadly I didn't.

The premise was interesting and the story did build up nicely, but it has a lot of problems which really made it hard for me to continue reading it.

To be able to identify the problems I compared this with the author's past work and other 'misunderstanding' stories. And after comparing it, it became clear how this particular story fell short.

The story this time took place in a scifi fantasy type world. The setting reminds me of his past work which in part because all the protagonists are of noble descent with overwhelming power to take on an unjust world or something along those lines.

but alas, this is not sevens nor dragoon nor is it otome mob.

Unlike sevens and dragoon the MC, Liam, did not go through much struggles to achieve his power, this made his power feels inconsequential. Neither did his power come from a comical source related to an established plot like in otomege mob.

What's more painful is the one dimensional interaction between him, his power, and his enemies. All interaction he did with his enemies could usually be easily solved by his brute force without much consequences.

Liam felt very one dimensional and his powers felt undeserving. He did not show much vulnerability in the face of adversity, a vulnerability that he would then need to work on to overcome his struggles.

As someone would say, the plot armor is thicc in this one, and I would argue this sense of deus ex machina which keeps happening a lot might be an indicator of lazy writing; this made the power balance in the story felt off.

The characters are not loveable. Yes, you might argue some of them are loveable, I like brian, I like Rosetta, but that's it. Liam does not seem to be very consistent with his dream and his motive sometimes may come in to question, while his friends and allies felt unimportant to the character's development and the story as a whole which made them very forgettable.

His enemies would boil down to be the same with each other, with each addition they did not bring anything new to the table, basically just the same set of skills but stronger or bigger. Compared to the enemies in otome mob, which gives new powers and new ways to interact with the main character, the enemies here feels really boring and forgettable.

This story's fixation on the guide is baffling to me and is a major turn off. I do not feel that the guide is a good contrast to Liam.

In my opinion as a misunderstandings story protagonist Liam feels too bland and normal. The story progression also felt too normal and too predictable to be a misunderstandings type of story. The misunderstandings felt forced and it feels to be just a way to add flavor text Liam's personality.

Compared to stories like Overlord or the eminence in shadow, the way the misunderstandings play about felt repetitive as a joke and unimportant to the story.

a lot of these might come down to pet peeves, but a lot of it may stack up really quickly.

[collapse]

tl;dr2: a lot of bland character and sh*t power balance. Not weird enough to be a believable misunderstandings story. I do not recommend. <<less

Until the point I've read, it seems to be a pretty interesting novel where the MC get's reincarnated in a universe of swords and magic after it has already developed.

He gets reincarnated because a certain entity destroyed his previous life as an appetizer and want to make him suffer even more in this life as its "main meal", but the MC ends up unknowingly getting his revenge and torturing the entity instead.

The MC has his flaws and traumas, besides an overall distaste of other people, most of it caused by... more>> said entity inm his previous life, but I believe he should get over it in time, seeing as this author is good at making character growth, be it the MC or the side characters.

Also, THIS IS NOT A CULTIVATION NOVEL, most of the bad reviews I've seen here are basically complaining about the same things and making it obvious that they were expecting a cultivation novel with an evil MC like the one from WMW, or that the MC does not act like a protagonist of a cultivation novel, how the magic system is not like cultivation novels, etc...

Note that I DID NOT say that it was all of them, not all novels are for everyone and that's normal. But most of the ones I've seen are like that. <<less

I feel as if so many people are missing the point of this series. This isnt some deep world building adventure, a vengeful epic, or cultivating to grandmist kinda novel. Its comedy!

Our protagonist is living a terrible life manipulated by his ex-wife. Upon his death an evil trickster gives him a seound chance, hoping to hurl him back into suffering. But he fails again and again, the MC is living his own story. sh*t always goes just right, hell half his decisions are random and just so happens to be... more>> a perfect decision. Thats whats supposed to be funny, his own disconect from the plot.

Our MC is riding the high of life. He decides whatever and people roll with it. He thinks himself the premier overlord, an evil nobleman who bleeds his people dry. Again, hese disconnected from the reality of the story. Comedy... people... funny.... yahya <<less

It is difficult for me to be objective about this story because it seems as if it were made specifically for my tastes, everything about it seems perfect.

I love misunderstanding stories, and this story has a lot. I love op protagonists, this story has that. I love well regarded main characters, and supernatural elements, and a small amount of domain building, all of these are present.

Basically, if you like this kind of story, you will really like it, and if you don't like this kind of story you probably won't.

This is one of the most hype novels for me to read. It's so well written, I can easily tell what's going on, there's nothing boring to be read, and the misunderstandings feel satisfying and absolutely hilarious. It feels dark and gloomy at the start, but boy, oh boy, it gets god-tier later on.

I love the novel so much that the anime made me upset. Was looking forward to the adaptation but nothing compares to the original at times.

I love the anti-hero protagonist that wants to be evil but is a good lord to everyone else. The appeal of the story is the protagonists sensitivity of his past leaving him to cherish his maid while not trusting others.

The harem hyjinks may bore some but I love these radical ladies who act "dissapointingly". (Read the novel to get the reference)

In summary: A feel-good... more>> novel with an OP protagonist. Not rare, yet the story is still very lovable. <<less

This novel is just good, clean fun. It uses that trope where the MC tries to do evil things, but his evil deeds always have positive results. It never gets old here like it does in other novels because from out point of view, he is really doing evil things. It's because of the setting that his evil things turn out good.

Spoiler

For instance, he accepts bribes in gold, but in this universe gold isnt super valuable. So he is helping people out for a cheap price.

[collapse]

He is also ruthless and evil to his enemies, so we can see his cruelty in action, but because his enemies are always bad guys, he still gets a positive reaction from his actions. Most volumes follow this kind of pattern, but it always finds a way to keep things fresh and interesting.

It is a bit jarring in the beginning because when I think of a whole galaxy, I think Star Wars rules where there are going to be thousands of alien species and planets. For him, it is going to be a couple of planets. It isn't a big deal, and I wouldn't even call it a problem, but I know it bothers some people.

The side characters are a treat. You never really get to see them on their own, so there isn't much depth to them, but there doesn't need to be. This story is all about Liam, and the interactions the characters have with Liam are a riot.

Spoiler

At one point his people start protesting, and they get it into their heads that a protest is basically a festival, so even though they are protesting, they are still having fun. Liam has a mini-freakout wondering why his subjects are so dumb.

[collapse]

The combat and war aspects are OK. Nothing too great, but it doesn't pretend to be. The author knows how long to play those scenes and makes sure they don't overstay their welcome.

The author also provides a solid reason why Liam hasn't committed to any harem. He has a bunch of girls who do like him, and he readily admits that if they weren't all insane, he would definitely like them back. But they are. Absolutely. Insane. It's great. I always appreciate when a reason beyond the MC being dense is used to prolong any romance. <<less

Great novel! Whimsical and filled with mayhem, but solidly written.

Don't believe the bad reviews, this is a "misunderstanding" type novel filled with luck and coincidence. The plot and characters are written with that as a premise. It is a comedy, not an action or drama. The people who have given bad reviews have misunderstood the genre entirely. Even the title is an inside joke once you understand the story.

Not much to say besides I've read two novels with the exact same plot as this. I don't really care if this was the OG version or not, I disliked all of them the same.

Evil MC reincarnates, crap parents who throw him under the boss and a deity who is a trickster. The MC misunderstands and praises said deity. The guy tries to act evil, but everyone misunderstands him as some kind of messiah.

Yeah.... Now where have I read this before? I know of at least a dozen novels that... more>> follow this trend a little.

Honestly, this story has interesting plot devices.

I just hate that there is a lot of wasted content.

Lots of unused snippets which I would like to know the context of.

... more>> For example:

How did the infamous first emperor of the Empire hold onto his throne for so long, considering that he was a fool and frequently discarded humanoid weapons like the shadow clan?

This plot point was discarded the moment author san finished the "Support Prince Cleo Arc", and was never mentioned again.

It's unlikely to ever be explained because of how a majority of Japanese light novels just jump from one problem to another and never really bother to reuse previous plot devices and lay out the groundwork for future story arcs.

Like that time when the MC learned that there was an AI uprising sometime in the past, and people are paranoid and discriminatory of AIs.

The author spent several chapters emphasizing that people really hate AIs.

For what?

So he can insert some characters who tr*sh the MC for having an AI, create a minor disturbance which is then forgotten in the next chapter, and subtly increase the chapter word count?

Come on man, I just want complete side plots.

I don't care if it doesn't make sense.

I feel like I'm reading a book with several pages torn out, and it's like I'm missing out on something.

I really want those side stories, however short they may be. <<less

To put it simply, the story is bad... I mean f***ing BAD.

That being said, if you can ignore all of that there is a bit of comedy.

Most of it is pretty typical troupe comedy that you can find in about any other comedy novel, but its there.

What sort of makes me upset about this story is that the idea sounds awesome... until you realize none of it makes sense and there is just no world-building or character development at all. It tries to pretend there is, but other than names... more>> and 1 or 2 facts that is about it. It glosses over anything interesting and doesn't really have much substance.

Remember that movie with Will Smith, I am Legion? Do you know that part where he is tripping out talking to the mannequin? That is what this story feels like. All of the characters feel like they are missing personality.

I tried to leave out spoilers, but if you want examples there are some on the other comments. <<less

It's pretty good, very nice plot and well done story telling, words are quite adequate and aren't too difficult or simple to bore the reader.

  • Pros
  • Nice plot
  • Not so awful characters
  • Cons
  • Sometimes the author seemingly forgets this is intergalactic and acts as if theres a few countries and continent's only so I get a bit agitated.
  • The beginning feels a little too rushed but its not that awful as they atleast have some interesting things that they sow.
MC has a 1d personality of "Oh yes gaha im gonna do that seems evil enough"

Very nice... more>> and hoping for more, very nice read. <<less

So far this series is one where I read for its comedy. Some people who gave bad reviews are either too serious or expecting smut. The villain is made to be idiotic to make the readers laugh. While it may be similar to Overlord because of misunderstandings, it is definitely not as serious plot wise. Right now, the MC and FL haven't really done anything romantic other than have a wedding, so I'm guessing this novel is not going to be ecchi. The other females seem to be too... generic,... more>> so I'm considering the idea of lowering my rating but I guess it's good overall. <<less

It's pretty good. Funny and hilarious. I mean what do you expect from a misunderstanding series? A bad guy accidentally gets seen as a good and righteous man, simply because of his past life experiences as a disappointed Japanese salaryman.

This is a simple reviews. There's decent world building. The characters are, for the most part dynamic, but its not a character driven story. It's purely a plot and situation driven story. Its character driven comedy for the most part.

There is a harem tag, but it honestly isn't ever important. He... more>> only has 1 wife (or fiancée), and basically never gets with any other girl (so far). His official harem count is basically 1, and he basically doesn't even touch, care, or consider the other girls as potential partners. So it doesn't really matter. And that's what makes it tolerable and funny. One of the longest running jokes is that he wants to form a s*x harem but it never happens, for reasons you will find out while reading.

Read it for the comedy. Its great at that. If you expect anything else, well don't, because its best when its doing comedy. And that's why its a good series. <<less

Ummm...... my opinion probably doesn’t matter that much, and I’m not one of those in-depth-analyzing-the-story kind of people, But if you like the types of stories do, and you Loved ‘To be in Power From the Shadows’, you’ll love this! I usually read yaoi and such, but I was looking for other stories like power in the shadows, and found this, and................... I ended up binge reading it over two days. 😅 My recommendation: trust in the high rating and multitudes of 5-star comments
