Sixty Years ago, one middle aged man brought a Qilin that looked like a pug and a mandarin duck that looked exactly like a duck, walking into the Imperial City of the Central Plains for the first time.

That year, this middle aged man crossed the Mountains and Seas Ridge, passed through the Four Seasons Plain and walked into Qingluan Academy.

Sixty Years later, Lin Xi sat on an old carriage, starting from Deerwood Village, he passed half the Yun Qin Empire and went straight north, going to Qingluan Academy…

This is a story involving the honor of an Empire, of loyalty and betrayal, involving youth and hot blood, involving a young man with a different perspective of the world, and a strong cultivating academy.

Don't expect this to be a typical 'light' or 'web' novel. Expect world-building, story and pace to be at the level of depth of a published work.

Story gets better as it progresses. It is still quite enjoyable to read in the beginning unless you're extremely impatient, so give it a try.

Edit (completed) : Probably 4/5 overall, considering the slow start, petty reasons for villains attacking MC, last volume (ending was okay but the last volume enemy and plot was just bad).

Amazing novel. If you like Mao Ni novels (Ze tian ji, Joy of life, Nightfall) then you will certainly love this novel and another novel by this author called Sword Dynasty. If you're not familiar with these novels, they are written very well and similarly.

Back to this novel:

Pros:

    1. MC is done very well and actually progresses in mentally from the beginning.
      Spoiler

First he sees himself as a traveler from another world. After spending time here and meeting all the new people, he gets attaches and starts working hard to protect what he has here.

      [collapse]
    1. MC's cheat is handled well and he is not too OP and it is fun reading about other characters baffling at MC's choices
    1. World doesn't revolve around MC. There are other characters and they have their spotlight and grow as the novel progresses.
    1. No harem, the women actually have personalities and make their own choices.
Cons:

    1. Slow start and buildup. MC starts as a peasant pretty much and works his way up.
    1. Villain's are crappy, few are well created and have reasons for their actions, others are arrogant young masters.
Overall a well written novel with good characters, good plot progression and a fun story. I recommend it if you can stand the slow pace.

By far exceeded my expectations. The begining is a little rough with the immersion breaking nonsense the actor would mention. But he quickly improves his writing and before you notice you already cant stop reading.

This is not one for empty minded readers who just want face slapping and blazing fast cultivation. This is slow paced with lots of characters and world building.

The main character's ability of turning back time for 10 minutes once a day is very well used by the author and you are always wondering how he can... more>> use it to his advantage.

5 stars from me, marathon worthy. <<less

I enjoyed this and am still reading it, but it's losing its luster as of recent chapters. When they first start out, the world building is really interesting and in depth, and the characters are all unique and interesting and memorable. This trend continues throughout the school arch and even the sorta detective arc immediately thereafter.

Where it started to lose its luster was after all that, when the MC started to do army related stuff. Some parts were fun and interesting, and some characters were memorable, but so much of... more>> it was just... extra. Named characters introduced to be killed in 3 chapters. Events happening on the other side of the world which won't matter for hundreds of chapters. Lots of politics.

This became a bit of an issue for me, because I started to feel like the main character was being set aside. The plot seemed to control him, rather than him controlling his destiny and aiming for goals. What was he hoping to accomplish? I honestly don't know right now. He's basically a soldier following orders. Personal goals? Set aside. Progress? Set aside. Character development? Set aside. He became a passenger in his own journey.

I'm hoping that this will return back to how it was earlier, personally. The scope is too large right now, and not in a good way. <<less

i love this novel like too much because of only how it is so not like billions of other chinease cultivation novels like no young master going to kill u after a2 lime dialogue, no face slaps mostly, actually have a story, MC grows in real time, feels like author have a plan about story, not every second girls falls for MC like there is real romance which a humam can understand, and its not repetitive as hell.....i was so frustrated by all the other novels with same f*cking concepts... more>> and with diffrent names that when I found this novel I felt like really good <<less

The book starts slow with too many Harry Potter references forced in the first arc for no reason and a lot of generic wuxia tropes, but after a couple of volumes those get left behind and you're left with a book with interesting characters and good world building, plot, storytelling, action sequences, etc. Highly recommend sticking through it

This novel is so good, you should definitely give it a try.

Even if the beginning of the story does not seem that great (and is pretty long), this Novel is so different than the other "cultivation" ones.

One of the best things is that girls are not just walking b**bs, they have a personnality and are interesting to follow. Even if there are a lot of characters that are not that important, it's great to see a world that is well-built.

The pace of this novel is quite slow but it fells... more>> refreshing in my opinion. <<less

Indeed a different novel. Well written (in-depth explanation of almost everything). A bit slow but nothing gets repeated, like on every Chinese novel. Author loves Harry Potter, so there is a lot references to it during my read as of now (V5C05).I especially like the cool headed MC, his way of dealing circumstances is pretty much perfect. Well a great novel, hope it doesn't let down until the end and very special thx to wuxiaworld translators for picking this up.

It's a martial arts/cultivation novel with an actual story and characters, Nuff said

MC is also genuinely interesting. It's bit slower paced sure, but it's better for it. It still has occasions of the action you crave as well.

and a cool quirk of the novel is that I still don't know what the title is talking about.

Well-written and engaging.

Unlike most "copy-paste", generic cultivation novels, this novel gives a different spin on these novels.

Reminiscent of Gu Long, the novel has a classical style, yet the main character's take on the world is new.

I REALLY - REALLY WISH THIS NOVEL HAD A DIFFERENT TRANSLATOR / EDITOR.

Edit: Story is more interesting but it took almost 5 volumes to reach this state but the translation still feels irritating to read. Very mouthful. Sentences needs restructuring etc etc. Not the spelling, but sentence structures. Sometimes the wrong choice of words can be seen. Missing verbs. For me this is an interesting novel ruined by translation. There are so many times where I just wanna yell. REDO THIS SENTENCE. Novel is good but you have to read... more>> through the first 5 volumes. Tsk. Could have been better with a different translator/editor.

============================================================

Story 4 / 5 - 3 Books in and still at the academy. It is like reading Chinese Harry Potter.

Main character Lin Xi - 3 / 5 - He is not detestable, but not very likeable either for me. He is slightly difficult to grasp an understanding of. But he is "ok" to follow and see where he will go.

Side characters 3 / 5 (they are incredible many) A lot of side characters. Many names to keep track off. You will spot many traditional Chinese characters as well; silk pants, arrogant young masters. But also side characters with different personalities (not all are copy pasted)

Translation 3 / 5 (.......) There are many sentences that throws me off.

It is an interesting novel, but this translation is irritating to read. So many weird structured sentences, so many weird placement of words, etc etc. Missing verbs. The list goes on.

This novel starts with a very interesting premise of the main character having the ability to go back in time a few minutes, he starts out quite smart using his ability well... And then the story can't help itself and falls back into the old tropes of arrogant young masters, randos wanting to kill the MC for xyz, and all the while the MC just progressively getting dumber and dumber. For instance he gets special training, but cant tell anyone else he would be target for assassination for his talent,... more>> yet somehow even with the extra years from being transmigrated he acts like hes 13 and has to act up and show off at any opportunity because he cant stand being looked down on.

Next is the 'worldbuilding' done in the worst possible way, random chapters dedicated to characters we have never seen and will never see again to find out what is happening to those we have no reason to care about, just to foreshadow some forced braindead plot device for later that everyone can plainly see way in advance as the authors skill clearly isnt up to snuff.

Where the novel is actually is interesting is when it sticks to the main character and the slightly more unique takes the author actually does bring to the table. Only downside is anytime there is interaction with antagonists the MC immediately has to revert to a braindead 13 year old for the plot to push forward.

In the end the novel is still decently well written just extremely uninspired, boring, and predictable for the most part, with the interesting parts becoming fewer and farther between as the story progresses. <<less

It was a loooooonnggg novel. On top of that, it's slow burn as hell. But I enjoyed it nonetheless.

It's a wuxia xianxia novel which gives the vibe of Miao Ni's Joy of life (one of my favorites). Especially the main character, Lin Xi and Fan Xian have so many things in common but there are obvious differences also present.

Lin Xi, the male lead, is mischievous, hardworking and even childish at times. He is also surprisingly monogamous among the herd of heroes with harem. He even pursued his wife and true,... more>> that there were second female leads and even potential third female leads who had incredible chemistry with him, ultimately he stuck out for his only love.

However, whoever said that this ML is op, is lying. Cause, no. He may have op golden finger but he was NOT op. This mf gave me so much anxiety that I had to quit reading multiple times.

This novel in a whole made me angsty. So many characters I liked died and the characters I hated stuck it out till the last book.

Many may have sympathy for Zhang Ping. And yeah, I can understand his emotions. The things he went through was inhumane. If he only wanted to kill Lin Xi, instead of wanting to rule the world, I may even pity him. But this asshat doesn't deserve any of it. In the end, Xu Shengmo gave his last spitting of facts. Zhang Ping loved himself more, his love for Qin Xiyue is laughable and even more doubtful. His self-inferiority could be traced back to the first encounter in Summer Spirit Lake and this is also the same thing that drove his downfall. He didn't even have any regret after killing his friends so no, he deserved to die. And die that he did.

Gao Yanan was great, though she took a backseat many times (I think it was inevitable as Lin Xi IS the main character after all). I also admired Meng Bai, his character development was painful but satisfying. I so wanted Changsun Wujiang to have a long-lasting friendship with Lin Xi, but alas! Nangong Weiyang was another weird character, in a good way. Xu Shengmo should demand for the million silver that someone owed him, though.

Until the last segment, I still wasn't sure of Qin Xiyue's feelings towards Lin Xi. Despite Lin Xi's completely platonic feelings for her, the walk towards Purgatory Mountain scene made me feel bittersweet. For the first time in a long time, I truly felt second female lead syndrome.

There are so many arcs. Some I liked more than the others. The author can be quite descriptive at times and he can go on and on and on. With sufficient editing, I believe the novel would become even better. I had to skim through some paragraphs because in an intense scene, the author would focus on unnecessary things often.

But, the complexity of the plot made it all worth it. Every character had their own will and personality. Lin Xi, alone, was not op but with his friend's help he conquered subsequent battles. It may go for an optimistic view towards life and the world. In this case, however, I liked it very much. It showed the ugliness of humanity but also the kindness and beauty of the world. Life is truly like a mirror. <<less

The problem with this novel, is that it spends way to much time on world building and seperate perspectives later on.

At the start, it's just enough to have good world building and character development for characters that haven't interacted with the MC yet.

Later on, I believe it starts around vol8 or so, the different perspectives and settings just go on for way to long, and happen way to often. An example would be... more>>
Spoiler

the MC is recovering from a battle so he must rest. (End chapter), then BAM* there is a war going on at the capital, the siege machines are blue, the sky is rainbow, the dirt is brown that guy is Bob and he killed rick, etc. 5chapters later, battle is over, then back to mc

[collapse]

Frankly I just dont understand the appeal of reading about all these things that have little to do with the MC. The author could have just said "battle here, side blue won." And if he wants to get descriptive, half a chapter would be more than enough.

Eventually it gets to a point where around 1/3 of the chapters are in a completely different country from the MC. Overall I just forced myself through it, and focused on the romance.

Spoiler

then suprise, MC and heroine get married. It was at this point that I just didnt care anymore because the romance was the only motivation I had to read through all the boring parts and random in the middle of nowhere about Jack and other random dude chapters

[collapse]

Overall, all I mean to say is that frankly, this story as a whole is quite boring. If you were to seperate the mc's perspective alone, than it can be considered a top tier cultivation novel, with the only downside being the slow pace. However at the end of the day, I was left quite unsatisfied, due to the perspective jumps.

I would reccomend dropping if you feel that the other perspectives are boring in the slightest, because it only gets worse. <<less

One of the best slow paced novels I've ever read, it was worth the effort.

For those who have previously read Nightfall, Joy of Life or Way of Choices, they would find this novel similar as it's focus is not on overwhelming martial arts and explosive techniques but on the entire atmosphere made up of various characters, their attitude towards life and unique way of thinking. A world of cultivators mingled with common people, empire officials and army generals, all of this is tied up in a reasonable way creating a... more>> world which awaits to be discovered by the main character.

Here, cultivators are indeed above ordinary people, but unlike other novels when a higher level cultivator is unrestrained, an army made of common people may kill even the most powerful man.

Give this story a try, it won't disappoint! <<less

This is a really slow novel where the author focuses on schemes and politics more than cultivation.

The MC is not too op, but he does have some special powers. He doesn't always win, so his plot armour is not as thick as other CN protagonists.

The side characters are not for decoration, they have much importance to the plot.

... more>> The antagonists are not idiots, they have brains and they know how to use them. They also get character developments.

This novel is not a harem. The male protagonist is very clear cut in his intention to stay devoted to the female protagonist. He has to try hard to get her affection. She is not a doll.

Overall, if we ignore some superficial flaws, it's a good novel. <<less

The hallmark of a good novel is that it leaves you feeling empty inside after finishing it, and generates thoughts beyond the plot. Immortal Devil Transformation is one such book.

I was initially attracted to this book due to promises of its literary style and vague, but not annoying foreshadowing (I hate when novels randomly allude to how things will be years later, acting as spoilers. Good foreshadowing is when it's not obvious when you're reading through it the first time, but it makes sense in hindsight) The book did not... more>> disappoint there.

Some parts feel slower or cliche, but if you power through them, you won't regret it in the end.

The premise of transmigration and a special golden finger are tried and true for webnovels, but the value of this book goes beyond the usual face slapping - the bad guys get their just deserts and all, but it doesn't feel repetitive or pointless.

After reading this book I have some thoughts about the deeper meaning the author is trying to express:

Spoiler

Sometimes simplicity is bliss. The contrast between the fast-paced, high-flying life of modern civilization is contrasted with the simple, dumb but ultimately pure sentiments of the characters in this new world. However, just like how a pure utopia cannot exist because the wants and wills of people will forever diverge, it is important that one searches for their own meaning in life. The ultimate pursuit of living is ironically to die feeling at peace with oneself and the direction they have chosen for themselves. As one's mortal achievements are just passing smoke in the lens of history, we should instead focus on positive contributions to society and humanity, which will live much longer than any individual's lifespan. The world is fundamentally what you make of it, but an internal mirror should guide your actions to be upright and just.

this is one of the best novels but under-rated or not popular like many other novels as for a reason I have no fuking idea why because all the readers can all agree that this is one of the best-written novels ever if you loved novels like soul land series then this one is for you the novel will let you have every emotional out there when readings from feeling family warm to love interest to lover rivals to contest to politic to army and wars and betrayals and sorrow... more>> from losing someone to joy many chapters later so this novel this just perfect and with and an ideal ending that most readers agree that the ending is to the liking of many, there isn't many heartbroken moments and many love complex relationships so that a bonus, so it's really worth the time invested in reading it fellow readers <<less
