It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

—— Dickens《A Tale of Two Cities》

I took my hatred and plot for revenge with me down the mire, to the depths of the abyss, and returned as a ghost of the past. I want to plant the seeds of the rotten truth, nourish their deadly thorns with fresh blood so that they grow and pierce through this civilization built on lies.

I reached the bottom of the abyss…only to find a shining star.

This book... is actually my favourite book. Like, ever. I don't know how to describe it to be honest - all my life, I've dreamed of interstellar exploration, and what I'm studying right now is all in the effort to get there. This book compounded that love... and did something else to my soul.

Like, it reached right within me, with all it's grey morality and discussions on 'what IS humanity', and deconstructed my inner self before building it up again. IDK, if you'll feel the same way about this book... more>> that I did, but I just felt like sharing how much this book means to me <3

I give you this quote from Liu Cixin:

“Life reached an evolutionary milestone when it climbed onto land from the ocean, but those first fish that climbed onto land ceased to be fish. Similarly, when humans entered space and were freed from the Earth, they ceased to be human.”

Agree with it, or don't. <<less

Another masterpiece from Priest. Finish the novel within 1 week. Well, I need to re-read some of the part to understand it better. Overall the plot is so good. I literally cried when it come to the sad part. And the translation is 100%. Thank you dear translator

Honestly this book is just absolutely incredible. I really love the MC and the ML, they are so sweet together. (Its my personal opinion that Lin Jingheng is the MC because I feel that the actual story follows him more, but Lu Bixing is like a close second MC because a large portion also follows him, but it really is more about Jingheng). Anyways, the story is also really great. I've read a few of Priest's novels and they are honestly amazing. The plot of this story is really good... more>> and all the characters are really developed and interesting.

Lets start with the plot. It's been a bit since I've started this novel and I've finished a few in between while I was waiting for the translations to update, so I don't completely remember everything. Anyways, the plot is very well thought out. There is a decent balance between the fighting, dialogue, and character exploration. Although some of the explanations to things are difficult to follow because of all the made up space names and stuff, it still does a very good job of explaining things in context. I really love how both leads get a chance to suffer and prosper. Neither one suffered more than the other, they both have had their difficulties. Actually I wanted to cry when the bad thing happened to them, it was so depressing and they changed a lot after. The story is also very interesting, it starts off with the MC going to the 8th galaxy and a girl running from a bad guy, you then very quickly meet the ML. I love how Priest wrote the ML and MC's story, how they got to where they are and show who they are.

OK the romance, it is adorable. At first the MC and ML are just very very cute together. Then the bad thing happens and Lu Bixing becomes very sad and they almost break up. They pull through and are even closer than ever. I honestly love how it is written, they love each other despite their changes, and they do change a lot. Their confession scene is adorable, Bixing is like KISS ME and Jingheng does. I love their little interactions together. I also really appreciate the dynamic of their relationship. Jingheng probably would have been top, but he doesn't want to hurt Bixing so he let Bixing be top. Also Jingheng is fine with it and just loves Bixing and lets Bixing do what he wants. They are on relatively equal standing. Bixing was probably "below" Jingheng for a while because of naivety, but when the bad thing happens Bixing gains more maturity. Jingheng also willingly tries to give all his freedom to Bixing, and tries to chain himself to him so that Bixing doesn't have to worry. Jingheng doesn't really care about himself and just cares about Bixing. They also have playful bickering times and it is really cute. The ML goes from a hopeful and dreaming big cutie into a bad ass Prime Minister and his journey is incredible. MC goes from a cold as*hole to a loving hubby and kinda bickering man. I haven't read the extras, they haven't been updated yet, but gosh they are already so cute.

SIDE CHARACTERS. Love them. There are many, but none of them are forgettable. Ain't much to say, but they all have their own developements and stories, and are absolutely wonderful. I actually like how this novel uses different ways to name characters, so that I don't have to fail at memorizing a bunch of different chinese names. It is easier for me to remember names like, White, Mint, Anakin, etc. I mean, I don't mind the Chinese names, it is just harder for me to remember. Priest just does a very good job at making their names memorable.

All in all, I love this novel. It is hilarious. It has lizards and snakes. It can be sad. It has fluff. GOSH its amazing. It balances so many things so well and I love it. <<less

As I have finally caught up with the translation with only 10 chapters of the main story left - I want to say thank you to the translators and editors who work so hard to bring us amazing novels like this one. The quality of translation is perfect and manages to depict the sci-fi terminology and futuristic setting very well.

The intergalactic theme is refreshingly new and I never felt like it was boring at all - The chapter count may seem intimidatingly long (197+extras) but this allows for more... more>> in-depth characters and themes that really leave an impression.

The thing that makes this novel in particular my favourite of priests work is the dynamic between the two leads: There are many problems and issues that they have to overcome, both internally and externally, and it does get a bit painful/sad at times. But this is what makes it so captivating as a story, since it can feel boring and unrealistic if everything always goes well for the characters. Although, that's just my personal opinion since I like a good balance of happiness and angst.

There is so much more I can say about this novel but I don't want to spoil too much; I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a complex, well-written plot and slow-burn romance. <<less

Absolutely amazing. Blew my mind on how good it was. A must read, the sci-fi aspect of the novel may be intimidating, but Priest introduces things easily and simply so normies like us can understand.

The relationship between the two male leads really shine through the jam-packed story. Even though it's a plot driven story, the romance definitely does not miss out, so romance-thirsty people like me get graciously get satisfied. The story is engaging, I could barely keep my eyes off it for 4 days.

It keeps the sophistication of a... more>> proper sci-fi novel, while keeping the humorous and lighthearted aspects of a webnovel. Priest switches between the lighthearted and serious tones often in the novel, so the emotional moments pack a punch and the reader gets breaks between the heavy stuff in between with the funny.

The main characters have immense depth and character development further into the novel you go. Over the course of 20 years, you see how the main characters change and their relationship change too. I especially liked Lin Jingheng and his unfeeling sacrificial nature turn into a warm and patient person in front of Lu Bixing. The ethical dilemmas shown in the main conflict has many moving parts, as you look back at the 'peaceful' beginning to what the main characters deal with now.

Spoiler

Lin Jingheng's constant struggle with his unlucky fate while pulling himself out of death's grip every time. You could say that he built his own plot shield. Lu Bixing's character development from a playful optimist that dreams of a better future, to a hardened leader, shell of his former self, pulling the 8th galaxy along by himself. His constant hatred for what he had become, and reminder to not cross the boundary of no return. With Lin Jingheng’s help, he starts to slowly recover what was left of himself, and healing his wounds.

[collapse]

What I love about these two is that even when situations are tough, and life deals them a bad card, they always stay true to themselves and their morals. Just like how humankind’s strength is it’s ability to persevere. <<less

This was an amazing experience.

It was a little hard to follow (especially during the space battles), because, duh, its sci-fi, if it was easy to understand then it wouldn't be an award-winning science fiction novel. And I'm also at fault because I prioritise speed over comprehension when reading novels.

Who exactly is the main character? Everybody's favourite 'chicken soup' peddler, Lu Bixing or the aloof, sarcastic commander, Lin Jingheng. Contrary to what most summaries say, I felt that Lu Bixing was the main character, although the story follows Lin Jingheng's life... more>> and the events surrounding it, but I connected more to Lu Bixing's feelings, experiences especially in the first three volumes. Lu Bixing is one amazing character, but together with Lin Jingheng, they're a force of nature.

Spoiler

The almost love story of Lin Wei and Laura Gordon was absolutely heartbreaking, I'll need one of those miracle medical capsules to fix my shattered heart

[collapse]

With this novel, I've officially been initiated into Priest's fan club. I love a good romance story and the romance in Priest's novels has always been a little bit lacking, but I just can't deny their genius, they're absolutely amazing and brilliant. <<less

This made me CRYYY both from despair and happiness. There's so much angst yet equal amounts of fluff and wholesomeness. The MC and ML are fated and made for each other, and had the most satisfying ending! They're such a power couple! Both equally and wholly in love with each other! Man I really love this novel, and it has become my absolute favourite 😭

Never have I cried so much reading a Danmei novel! I wish there was an official translation or an actually good donghua adaptation! It really is... more>> a great Space Opera and would make an amazing anime series! 😭 This novel deserves so much more attention! I love Priest's work! If you love interesting plot and heavy buildup with exquisite payoff at the end, that is if you love reading, this novel is meant for you! But if you just want a quick romantic story or just don't like reading this isn't meant for you.

PS. I'm pretty sure the MC and ML could totally be considered switches! If that's something you seek in stories, this is one of the best you could go for! <<less

Since I've forgotten to do a review about this and it's been quite a while since I've read this novel, I cannot say much about the details of this danmei, fortunately you can read about them in other reviews.

Talking about Can Ci Pin, I must say that I've got no complaints. The plot is exquisitely well-made and the sci-fi aspect is understandable, which is a lot to say since I'm not very practicable with sci-fi stories.

The romance is also very good and balanced, differently from other stories where there's always... more>> one party more 'powerful' than the other, I'm happy that in this one not only there's no difference in power, but they help each other 'growing'. I'm a sucker for 'MCs prickly exterior is melted away by the ML's gentle actions' trope' and it fits really well in this novel other than the trope being made really really well.

A lot of people prefer Lu Bixing (ML) over Lin Jingheng (MC) but the latter's character development and his temper made me love him way more than the ML (though Lu Bixing goes through a really interesting character development too).

And strangely, the ending fits perfectly with the story's morals.

Even if you dont like BLs Sci-Fi, I will still reccomend this novel since it's really good. <<less

AAHHH long overdue review but this novel remains to be my bl favorite novel on the site and considering I'm a picky reader that's saying a lot. First, the worldbuilding is f*cking crazy, it's insane, it's great. To the point that even if this wasn't bl the younger me who only read bl would've dedicated hours onto reading it. I finished it two years ago yet I still vividly remember the characters (they're really, really likeable) and the plot progression, that's how good it is.

I haven't read any interstellar novel... more>> before this one, didn't even think I'd like this since it was never my thing but damn was it a ride.

Plus, the cp is so amazing, wonderful, brilliant, exceptional, one of a kind, never the same. They both have their own goals and don't solely exist for each other to be a couple. They're written really well with likeable traits but not lacking in flaws, either. I could say the same to most of the main cast, though I don't remember all of them that well.

Be aware that it tackles really heavy topics, though. Some points of the story are heart wrenching but you will be rewarded with a beautiful, healthy relationship by the end. It's all worth it.

Im ngl, until now I still try to find and immerse myself in a novel the same way I did with this one. I'm still trying to emulate what I felt during the times when I read this until today.

In short, Priest really popped off with this. <<less

4.8-4.9 stars. Long review ahead so beware.

Ahhh! Too good.

This is a pretty good book with amazing actions, heavy plots, twists and turns, politics and schemes, and battle scenes. The book examines the evolution of humanity or de-evolution of humanity in the intergalactic era. It projects a dystopia, a fake utopia that eventually collapsed. I like the book but sometimes the plot can get too heavy, especially toward the end when I had to take a break from it and read other more fluffy novels. There were heartbreaking moments and betrayals.... more>> It really portrays the saying that there are no eternal enemies, only eternal benefits. In a sense, this novel really emulates human nature perfectly. It is not just purely black and white but there are many grey areas. The novel is a good literary piece. Bow down to master Priest.

Ok onto the characters. The MC, Lin Jingheng, is a badass MC. He's cold and indifferent but his heart would melt for those closest to him, especially to Lu Bixing. He turns out that way because of circumstances, but he has to be the one who upheld the Pledge of freedom the most, almost to the point of idiocrasy, even though he might deny it. Both MC and ML are really good people but fate kept playing with them, making them suffer so much. I'm glad that they get to enjoy peace and happiness at the end.
Spoiler

I really love their wedding night from the extras. It was one of the most heartwarming and heartbreaking moments when the dead meet the living and the past and present collide. I have to give it to Lu Bixing to formulate such a wedding that just perfectly fit the 2 of them...

[collapse]
Both of them love each other unconditionally with patience and kindness.

Spoiler

I won't ask anything from you as long as you let me love you unconditionally in my own way; I don't need anything in return, I don't need any promises, and I don't even need a future.— Lin Jingheng (Book 5, ch 137). In the early stage, you can see Lu Bixing pursuing our MC while our MC is not very expressive. But throughout the novel, you can feel MC's strong love for ML.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The man thought, Why would I wait another hundred or two hundred years to give you something I can deliver now?— Lin Jingheng (Extra Ch 202). Such boundless and accommodating love provides a strong contrast to MC's cold personality that makes him so much hotter! This melts my heart. They are so right for each other.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Both MC and ML have heavy duties placed on their shoulder, and they didn't let their love be a hindrance. Instead, they use their love for each other as fuel to outdone their best to stay alive and fight against fate to get back to each other. The 16 years of separation are heartbreaking and ML's character growth and change are well done. He changes from a happy-go-lucky guy to a mature and powerful prime minister but he never lost that inner smile once MC comes back. There is an innuendo at one point about how ML has some aspect similar to Woolf and he (ML) may have turned out that way, but luckily his Jingheng comes back. There is an obvious sign of his struggle against his inner demon of wanting to monopolize Jingheng. He doesn't want to be selfish and turn his love for Jingheng into something so ugly. I really applaud this moment. Lu Bixing is a gem in this novel, both MC and ML are.

The one I love is you, my one and only guardian of the galaxy, not the me that wants to chain you down with my own hands.—Lu Bixing (Book 6, Ch 152)

[collapse]

This novel touches on a lot of deep concepts and freedom and faith is a recurring theme. You can feel this constant heroic courage to fight against circumstances to achieve freedom in the background from the common people, despite all the powerful playing this big chess game of politics.

Overall, there are some characters that I didn't like, mainly the villains, but at the end of the day, I can't really hate them. They are all drowned in this river called fate.

Spoiler

Family. This is a big theme in the novel.

He let out a sigh, turned his head slightly to exchange a glance with Lu Xin, then finally turned his whole body around in defeat and grabbed that virtual hand. The realistic touch brushed against his skin, almost making him feel as if he really was holding the hand of Lu Xin himself. That man before him stood proudly with broad shoulders; a few little strands of hair stuck out from the back of his head as he led the young man out the door with his large silhouette and said the last recorded line. "Dad's here, there's nothing to be afraid of."

The door at the end of the slide tunnel opened up and let in the light from outside. Lu Bixing stood bewildered as the touch to his hand and the projection before him both disappeared; he subconsciously turned around while still gripping that warmness from the hand earlier..... There was nothing left.

Lin Jingheng waited by the elevator for him. It was breaking dawn outside as the light of the Woltorian sun cast brightly over his shoulders. Lin Jingheng stood a few steps away and looked quietly at Lu Bixing.

Across timespace, all feelings merged and moved a cold heart.

Lu Bixing's smooth talk, smooth words, had all malfunctioned at that moment as he stared in awe at the man before him, unable to even make a sound.

He truly had known this man before he was born. (Book 6, Ch 163)

I cried at this moment. There is so much love contained in this small section. There is parental love from Lu Xin, ML's mom, and Jingheng which you can feel from the house and the playground. Then there's love between MC and ML, how fated they are. It was really a magical moment.

"Who are you?"

"I'm your dad."

".... Dad?"

"A dad is someone who will take care of you and protect you until you grow up."

"What about after I grow up?"

"Your dad will love you forever above all else in the world, even more than he loves himself." (Extra: Patron)

I cried a river myself when I read this extra. Reading about what Lu Bixing experienced in his childhood and how he turned out to have such a bubbly personality that just feed chicken soup for souls is a wonder. To experience such inhuman hardship and remains an angel is really... Priest has done a good job building the two main characters and portraying the familial relationship. I'm glad that both Jingheng and Bixing got to experience fatherly love. They deserve so much more. I have to say that Monoeyed Hawk is a sweet character and his love for ML is boundless. It is unfortunate that he passed away.

Just a few chapters, I have gut feeling that this was a heavy read, however it'll be awesome too.

But, I'll store this for later, as I'm looking for something lighter and easy going for now.

Skimmed the reviews and some spoilers, one thing I noticed was people have different ideas of who were the ML and MC. Some even didn't know who were the top/gong/seme or bottom/shou/uke. 😅

Really wanted to like this since I’ve heard good things about it, but it was hard to get through and just not as interesting or engaging as I had hoped.

One of my biggest issues is that I... really didn’t like Lin Jingheng’s character. Not just that I personally didn’t like him, but I also think that his characterization wasn’t portrayed very effectively. Surprising, as I usually think priest is pretty skilled at creating complex characters and having their personality, motivations, flaws, and contradictions come through via their speech and actions.... more>> But in this case, it felt like all the things we learned about LJH, came from narration where priest describes his personality or some aspect of his backstory that affected him, so more “telling” than “showing.” I did like Lu Bixing, though!

The balance and pacing between romantic plotline, action scenes, and “in-between” more slice of life sections was off. There were long sections that were starved of meaningful interaction between the two leads, and tons of space battles that were way too drawn out and confusing for my liking—it was hard to follow what was happening and where all the ships were. And then there were parts where nothing much was happening and it just got boring and made it hard to motivate myself to keep reading.

Initially, I enjoyed the main premise and intrigue/conflicts between the different factions! Kept me curious to find out more about the background and inner workings of each faction. But then in the 2nd half of the novel, after we already find out who the mastermind is behind each faction, then the power struggle and battles started to feel drawn out and uninteresting. Wanted them to finally get to the point and have a decisive confrontation. Eventually, I kind of felt like the story got lost and became unfocused, because I couldn’t feel a sense of “this is the main villain” or “this is what the protagonists are trying to achieve”, and it was just a lot of separate space battles over and over and feeling very repetitive.

The ending is actually quite good and very satisfying! But I wish the novel as a whole was about 2/3 the length, more focused, and less convoluted. <<less

I have this thing with priest that everytime I encounter priest's novel it will take a long time for me to read it, I meant I already started it but procrastinating not to continue reading. Even if it was alrdy on my reading list, it still there waiting for me to read it. And no matter how many series I read from priest and how much I know their writing style It really just takes time to get into it. This always happens every single time. But the thing is,... more>> you wouldn't be disappointed to his novels. Even if I knew I wouldn't be able to read it immediately I would gladly recommend his work, even if Idk anything about it.

This is the 3rd priest novel in my reading list THREE!

Edit: so I finally read it. I have to say it that everyone seems to ignore. Ik this is how priests works but I read some of her work that didnt need time to get into. Its like one piece, they said it'll be good at 300 episodes or so but how would I go there if the first few episode im not hooked? This is what feels likes.

I get it. I understood it. But im currently on chapter 16 in a week, im waiting for myself to get hook, I'm curious on what will happen but im finding myself looking for something else to read. Procrastinating from finishing this. Ik I wouldn't be disappointed and I have great expectations but im close to dropping it. Im alrdy in chapter 16 and I dont know why im still reading this.

I didn't. At c20, I kind of knew what is happening. <<less

I've read most of Priest's books and would consider this her masterpiece. Liu Yao is my personal favourite, but in terms of literary quality, plot and originality, Can Ci Pin is unbeatable. Definitely in the top 10 of all Chinese webnovels with English translation.

Super grateful to everyone who recommended it even to people who don't normally like sci-fi. The quality of this book makes it excellent for almost any reader.

I'm not finished yet with the novel and really by the time I'm finished, this rating isn't likely to change.

Tbh I was expecting some redundant, romance-focused plot, with supposed genius someone seeming more dumb and an OP arrogant ML (well that he is) however this novel's characters have some pretty good character development, the plot is realistic enough (by that I mean according to its setting and such)...

I won't say much because I don't really wanna spoil (although yes spoiler down below) but I appreciate how the characters' presentation wasn't... more>> overdone (as in boasting on and on again about how OP x or y is... it's subtle in the way it actually shows you the character doing those and you naturally understand how it's not all pompous irritable bluff -rant over lol. I came with somewhat low expectations but

this is REALLY recommend!!! Can't wait to fry my brain with MTL...

also spoiler below on the main characters if you want some more convincing on why you should read (if this sort of thing I like can convince you)

Spoiler

Lu Bixing actually seems like a teacher. Also I find him really charismatic and really happy that he has actual abilities and you see that he actually has worth.

Lin Jingheng I really was expecting the standard cold, yandere, OP, arrogant ML well he is OP but I actually think it's not overdone since he's been in the military for a few decades, has the experience plus yeah I guess you could say talent? (Also he trains like a madman so he is rightfully authorised to be an OP character not to mention that he does make his mistakes). His character is also 'funny' and he appears as a capable character during battles, also getting injured because his tactics are crazy (and he does sometimes brush it off but if you think about it he is sometimes really seriously injured).

Honestly before starting it I thought it will be extremely difficult for me to understand but that was not the case at all.

The plot was very indulging and the world building by priest was as brilliant as it could get. The main characters were extremely loveable and their relationship was one of the best among all the novels I have read before.

This is a novel which truly made me feel the existence of character development and couple growth.

The side characters were very adorable as well and all the characters' feelings... more>> towards each other gave the story more depth.

I loved the MCs. Lu Bixing is an actual ball of sunshine and Lin Jingheng is like a shining star. I can go on about how much I love them but that still won't be enough.

Overall, the plot was tied together in an extremely well manner and it was 100% indulging. Although this kind of story may not be easy to understand for everyone but in my opinion it was absolutely fantastic.

I initially thought I would not like this because all the novels I've read before this were either historical or about cultivation. I even almost dropped this because I was bombarded by all kinds of scientific and futuristic stuff right from the start (imagine that your usual mode of transportation were carriages or flying swords, then all of a sudden, they were replaced with supermechs). However, thank the heavens, I did not drop this masterpiece.

Anyway, this novel is very plot-heavy and many of the stuff that were talked about were... more>> difficult to understand at first, but don't worry, the world-building, the humor, the romance, the battles scenes, and the characters make up for it, especially Zhan Lu (my babyyy). Lu Bixing and Lin Jingheng are also very adorable and sexy (I've seen the trailer of the donghua😍), and the way they show their love by supporting each other is just perfect. The way they try to make their relationship work despite the problems both of them were facing is just so realistic and heartwarming. As for the side characters, man, Priest really succeeded in making me care so much for every characters to the point of breaking my heart and crying my eyes out. I did not even expect that there was angst in this. I mean, I got teary-eyed in some of Priest's works, but in this one, boy, my heart could not take it, especially when I read those damn extra chapters in the end; those chapters really made me bawl my eyes out that I woke up with swollen eyes the next morning.

Overall, this novel is absolutely magnificent. You are definitely missing out if you haven't read this yet. Now, start reading. <<less

I give this 5 stars deserved ☆☆☆☆☆

This book was exceptional and made me questions so many things about humanity, war, etc.

The couple is so sweet and lovely, they way they love each other is so devoted and the communication!! Amazing.

... more>> It was a little heavy to read in the parts where it showed what happened in the fights. I couldn't stop reading and every part of the story keeps your attention until you finish.

Really you will have to read it to understand how great this is.

(Kind of a Spoiler ¿?)

.

There was so many times I felt the pain in every secondary character dead, ah it was pain.

So many characters (some not very important honestly) died in the war and that made reliaze how cruel the world can be. The human nature sure is interesting and the way Priest put everything blowed my mind.

If you really are into the story and not only for the romance you will start to think deeply about what the story wants to transmit. <<less
