As a despised assault-type guide, Lin Yuan has a fiancé matched to her by the state. Her fiancé is from a prestigious family, handsome, wealthy, and impeccably mannered, making her the envy of many.

Why would such an excellent partner be assigned to her? She doesn’t even meet the standards for tea ceremony, and her cooking skills only earned a “B” grade.

“He’ll get tired of her eventually.”

“That’s right, they’re doomed to fail.”

After hearing these kinds of remarks so often, Lin Yuan also came to believe that she and Jiang Yangshuo were destined to break up. So, when her fiancé appeared before her with a gentle and lovely young woman, she didn’t hesitate to take off her engagement ring and toss it down the drain in front of them both.

From then on, Lin Yuan enjoyed a life of freedom, where the sky was the limit, and the sea was vast enough for her to roam as she pleased.

Who knew that after a few years of living unrestrained, her ex-fiancé would corner her at a royal banquet, his eyes red-rimmed, and declare that he had been regretting his decision all these years, that he was consumed with longing for her.

No, no, no, thank you, please don’t. Lin Yuan, who had become accustomed to her wild ways, had not a single desire to return to her previous life.

Her ex-fiancé’s face turned livid as he gritted his teeth, “I don’t mind your type, and I can try my best to tolerate your shortcomings. You won’t find a sentinel who indulges you more than I do.”

“Well, you see, I already have a new sentinel.” To completely shake off his entanglement, Lin Yuan casually threw out a name as a shield. She quickly reviewed the images of the sentinels she had met on the battlefield, choosing the name of a brother with whom she had shared life-and-death experiences. She figured the man wouldn’t mind.

“He just happens to be a receptive type, a perfect match for me, and he likes me a lot. He doesn’t care about any of my flaws.”

Just after sending off her devastated ex-fiancé, Lin Yuan turned around and bumped into the very man she had just name-dropped.

That man, who had killed countless enemies on the battlefield and had achieved remarkable merit, had a slightly flushed, handsome face. He turned his head and said softly, “You…when did you know I liked you?”

Lin Yuan: “…”

Extremely good. There are very few novels that I genuinely have little complaints about or think there could be more to be improved, but this is 100% one of them. One of the best novels I've read on this site. It reminds me inexplicably of 'How to Feed an Abyss' in terms of how developed and emotionally complex the apocalyptic world building is, but the relationship between the MC and ML is markedly more developed.

Reading this novel actually makes me so emotional to be human and alive.

I would say one... more>> of the highlights in this novel is the worldbuilding. The plot is inextricable from the world building, so I won't go into the plot, but I'll give a brief overview of the apocalyptic setting. It's a sentinel-guide novel, complete with cute fluffy spirit animals that I very much loved.

The novel takes place in a time when the Earth has a totally matured apocalypse, and humanity has settled into a 'post-apocalyptic era' if that makes sense. Think Bridge to Terabithia (confined city that has accepted its fate) or Little Mushroom. Sentinels are sent out in packs to scour for resources in fallen 'containment zones' (implied mainly to be extraneously for rare resources that cater to the capitalistic wealthy) and guides are to be educated and kept at home - think 'omegas' in how they're societally stereotyped to be fragile.

I already love how the author manages to weave in some many real-life parallels of capitalism, socioeconomic inequality, gender inequality etc, but she manages to attribute equal weight to each of these issues.

People are saying that they wish there were more extras - yes, me too actually. There are certain areas I wouldn't have minded there to be elaboration on e.g:

Spoiler

A very covert reference to her mother and father being a sentinel and deviant pair? Which would been a very nice expansion onto the 'can deviants reproduce' line that the author hinted at just a couple chapters before...

[collapse]

Or
Spoiler

just more extras onto the life between the ML and MC post-clean up.

[collapse]

But honestly, I think the novel is also perfect as it is? Maybe because I'm still immersed in the emotions, but the 'abruptness' of the ending was also satisfying. Everything was gunning gunning gunning for like the last 40 chapters so that it finally ended I felt like I was exhaling alongside with the MC and ML. Like yes.... finally, they're at peace.

The other highlight I love is how emotional this story made me. Genuinely, this is one of those novels that have me going 'I'm actually rooting for humanity'. I'm glad there wasn't any like Chinese patriotic themes, because I think it would have cheapened it. But I think this novel managed to pull out the main theme every apocalypse novel should go for: the tenacity of the human spirit. Each story behind all of the side characters and how they grow... oh my god, I was sobbing like every chapter. It's both sad and ugly and beautiful and also the human experience.

The ML and the MC have a very beautiful relationship. The romance and the main plot were also very equally balanced, which made me surprised. I loved how there was a large emphasis on the trust between one another, and you very much were able to see how their feelings grew. It was 'slow burn' in the sense that it took a while to be official, but I didn't even mind it because so much was happening it made sense. In fact, I don't think things were even official until chapter

chapter 130?

Genuinely, I completely did not expect this novel to blow it out the water for me. I sat down thinking it would be a fluffy sentinel-guide verse read. It was a little fluffy because if it wasn't I think I would've drowned in tears.

It's a combination of 'Little Mushroom' - though I personally think 'How to Feed an Abyss' is better than that - and 'Mist' and 'Doomsday Spiritual Artifact Master'. Wow. <<less

I would consider this an ok read especially since there's not a lot of FL in a post-apocalyptic world. While it did get me hooked for the most part, there are major plot holes.

The author would hint at past events often but never fully connected them to the present timeline. Even at the end, there was a major revelation but there was no explanation of how the FL found out. Instead it felt like a random fact hastily added. Fights that appeared to be major event would be condensed down... more>> to 1-2 sentences. The romance was more of a subplot with how the story was written but it was the only thing that kept me continuing.

If the author had explore their ideas more, I think the story would be cohesive & strong. <<less

Really love it. Amazing world building. It was dark and twisted and yet had beautiful positive themes of redemption for humanity. Great translation work too. Will be reading more of the author’s works, I loved the other ones I read too.

Super unique story, really enjoyable read. Wish there were more extras from the author!

Spoiler

For example, the MC's parents/parentage/backstory... how did the MC inherit everything...

[collapse]

We have a surprisingly strong MC who doesn't act like your typical CN female protagonist. There's a touch of role reversal where the MC takes more initiative in the relationship and the ML is the shy one.

MC is super cold / unfeeling, extremely rational, and extremely strong. She's also very straightforward and a bit clueless, but she takes a ton of initiative and has a ton of agency. She isn't some princess who needs rescuing,

Spoiler

... in fact, the story starts with her rescuing the ML.

[collapse]

There are lots of descriptions in the story that flip gender roles around, which was super enjoyable.

Spoiler

For example, the ML is portrayed and described as blushing, soft, and sweet. Typical words that are usually used on female MCs are used on him instead. He's also an excellent cook and has a strong caretaker side. He also asks the MC for hugs (SO CUTE). MC is the dominant one in the relationship and they are super adorkable together.

[collapse]

There's a twist at the end

Spoiler

which I think is foreshadowed quite early on in the story. But it's still very enjoyable.

Translation was nice. I enjoyed reading it and didn't run into too many odd parts. <<less

This novel is an absolute treasure!!! Why do I say that? There are several reasons.

The first one is the plot! OMG!!! It was very unexpected and left me in confusion but excited at the same time making me feel, 'I get it, but did I really get it?' The author kept me in curiosity till she finally decided to drop some bombs generously. The plot was well planned and perfect.

The second reason which makes this novel so special is character building. The MC is a piece of wood with no... more>> feelings but gradually learns how to be more humane. She learns how to feel happy, sad, love, envy, anger, friendship and so much more. As for the ML who appears very cold, he is actually a cute softie inside, who is like a well behaved puppy infront of the MC. After meeting the MC, he finally finds a reason to live and learns how to love himself, so he can spend time with the MC.

Not only the main couple, there were so many supporting characters with their own unique personality and their own back story.

This novel is full of blood and brutal. But still, it was not to the point of unbearable.

Spoiler

Well, I can't help but mention, why does the author make the novel full of tragic deaths? At first I felt so sad, but after reading so many heart breaking deaths, I became numb. I just prayed for like every single character wishing the author would not kill them.

[collapse]

The only shortcoming I noticed was the rushed ending and the uncertain future, left us to think of our own. Still it had a happy ending, so I think I can accept it. <<less

A twisted guide universe where all the roles are reverse. Very refreshing. The apocalyptic world is harsh and scary but fascinating and complex. The real attraction of the story. I laughed at the weird ways of thinking of the protagonists whose love story is very unusual. No cheesy moments or dog food.
