When the admissions office of Witch Academy called, I was stunned—I had been accepted into a school I never imagined I could touch.

Yes, I am a boy and it is an all-girls’ academy, but they did not mind, so I saw no reason to object. I had applied secretly, without telling my family, just to take a chance.

But as soon as those striking seniors greeted us newcomers—pressing every boy against the wall with a knowing smile—I realized things were about to spin out of control.

“Oh, come now, you sweet little freshman,” one of them said smoothly, her voice full of mischief. “Don’t make this difficult for me, your big sis. Swallow this core and transform into a witch like me, alright?”

She held the glowing orb before us, half-threatening, half-teasing, almost inviting the new boys to react. It was clear she enjoyed it—the blend of fear and resistance in their expressions. Our unease seemed to be her personal amusement.

After all, they only had this opportunity once a year.

A shameless (no, really!) five-star review from the translator here.

I've been translating webnovels for eight years, and lately, I've been feeling exhausted—mainly because most of the projects I've worked on are dramatic family sagas filled with revenge, reincarnations, CEOs, heirs and heiresses, and the endless "XXX family in XXX city" stories. People dying. People killing...

At some point, I seriously wondered if I'd go brain-dead if I kept translating those kinds of stories. And then...

... more>> THIS PARTICULAR BOOK SHOWED UP.

Honestly, when Storm first handed me this book, I was a little nervous. It was obviously so different from anything I'd worked on before. Let's be real—at least no one dies in the beginning. There's no face-slapping. No "Take this ten billion and get lost!" drama.

But once I started reading, I was hooked. It's peaceful—very peaceful—but it also feels incredibly real. And by real, I don't mean a dry, literal depiction of everyday life. I mean a beautifully detailed, immersive portrayal of a magical world and a quiet transformation of one person's life.

The way the male lead slowly builds a life reminded me of my own. How he found a shelter, got a part-time job just to make ends meet... Is it trivial? Maybe. Compared to billion-dollar family feuds, he's just a small, ordinary guy living his own small, ordinary life. But that's exactly why someone like me—another small, ordinary person—can relate to him.

I truly believe the author didn't just make up this story. I think quite a bit of it comes from his or her own thoughts and life experiences. That's why the magical world they created feels so real.

I told the story's editor, Luffy, that my life has been hell lately. But this book feels like a safe haven. Every time I dive into it, I see hope—hope in how the protagonist changes his life, not with some magical golden finger, but with his own actual hands.

If this were a marketplace and I wanted more people to read this book, I'd probably be yelling:

"Hey! Look! An author who's actually writing with A BRAIN! And real EMOTIONS!"

—Two things that have long been forgotten in the mainstream Chinese webnovel scene, mostly because, well, they're not required.

This author isn't the first to try bringing those things back, but he or she is definitely the first one I feel has done it in a way that works.

If you're looking for a relaxing, heartwarming story that'll make you smile, please give this one a try. I love it, and I truly hope more people get to discover this little gem. <<less

Eh, while the story is/could be all that the other review below said. It is very down-to-earth compared to the other ridiculous sh*t CN novels get too. Nothing of the twenty six chapters I've read is particularly contradictory but-

It's just... "Nothing else works, or else another senior might have done it cruelly, with sick pleasure. They'd make the experience excruciatingly slow, ensuring your ultimate desperation. I couldn't bear that."

It is very hard to root for a protagonist who after hearing that, despite only being a witch for in essence five... more>> minutes and retaining some common sense from our world, comments on how watching boys, who mind you generally consisted of tricked and kidnapped people, being forced to undergo an irreversible gender transition against their will is HILARIOUS, she even explicitly states it's the crying and throwing tantrums part is 'hilarious' and she understands the seniors better. Like, I support trans rights but we need to talk about trans wrongs here because that's f*cked up beyond belief. I'm used to ignoring amoral stuff certain types of protags get up to, read too many novels in general not to, but I have a limit. And finding forced bodily violation arguably on the level of R*PE if not worse funny is one.

I dunno, maybe the protag grows a sense of empathy in the hundreds of chapters I haven't read, maybe this is a one time sentence of pure evil the author didn't intend to be so dark, but man is it a turn off. If you're fine with that, go forward and read, if not - well, it's still up to you. <<less

Rather than an epic or power focus supernatural academy, this one actually put the academy in front of the super power. Meaning that the novel care more of how and why the institution work in certain way and the science behind the world setting plot. The first 100 chapters are quite solely use to introduce these, which are both tedious to read and interesting foreshadow for the chapters to come.

As one review below mention, the main character world view is partially twisted, though this is intentional, the review by Kalleiid... more>> has done an absolute nut job of psycho analysis if you really interest, but there some other matter I would like to include, spoiler:

Spoiler

One of the main character innate trait is spirit vision [Floating Level], and the level below hers is called [Border to Madness] (MTL name). This mean as a child she is burden with the madness of the extraordinary of the universe, which most people having that trait before would be overcome by madness before even age into a child. While she doesn't fully aware of the implication at start, she is isolated by nature for her uniqueness.

This was quite a set up for a trait of her and the novel that I often seeing in Xianxia novel, of one's worth correlate to one's treatment and chance of survival. Her parent and girlfriend doesn't understand her worth, so they easily discard her. The world itself doesn't really care about her, but the moment she demonstrate her potential it try to squeeze out as much as it can without even bother to do her anything unlike some character who dubbed "Child of Luck" cause it know she hate the idea of being control by fate, only to willingly offer all luck from other "Child of Luck" the moment she exceed it expectation. Even most of teacher who is not bind by the world's script wouldn't care about her much, until she show them something they can gain or worth invest for.

She has isolated herself from other as they had done to her, her interaction with other are also one of mutual gain as she understand how her world work. This was her starting point, one that she try to change, as that isn't what she want to be but what the world has mold her to become.

[collapse]

The novel would be center around the protag as she grow in both knowledge and ideology, which could cause some discomfort if you disapprove the said ideology, especially when some of them is about personal worth, power, identity, how the world function, etc. And how she interact with others, as each major character are all with their own trait, position and goal, many having their own arc and growth.

The power system of the Witch race is quite unique in the way they bring presented, very science-ish if you compare those fantasy jargon to real life scientific method, for me personally it like a mix of hardware and software programming. There are many nuance in this, most are more of concern for newly transform witch like our protag and without appropriate magical sense level.

Lastly, the novel is influence by the Yuri and TS culture, some degenerate part, not the main focus but it's there, quite discomforting if you are not use to how down bad some of those material implication is.

Overall, I like it, the character growth and the world building is quite top notch, there some questionable stuff here and there as I mention, whether you think it is too much or not is up to you but I recommend everyone to have a read and decide for yourself. <<less
