It’s Better to be the Empress Dowager

Tang Shishi was the number one beauty in the court. She was arrogant, domineering and aggressive. She accidentally picked up a book and learned that she was just a vicious female second lead in a palace struggle. Later, she would fight for favor with the female lead, and eventually she was ruined and died miserably.

Now, they have just entered the fief of Jing Wang, and the first meeting of the male and female leads has not happened yet. There are two paths before Tang Shishi. The first is to hold the heroine’s thighs tightly and join the female lead camp early; the second is to please the male lead and steal the favor of the female lead.

Tang Shishi chooses the third way.

Tang Shishi knew that the male lead’s adoptive father Jing Wang seemed to be low profile, but in fact he was overly ambitious. In the near future, he will invade the capital and proclaim the emperor before the imperial court, but it is a pity that he passed away before passing the throne to the male lead.

This year, Jing Wang is twenty-four years old, still young, and has yet to marry a wife.
Anyway, she already in the Forbidden City. Instead of being the concubine of the male lead, it is better to be his adopted mother, the empress dowager in one step.

————–

Zhao Chengjun had no intention to get married, so he adopted his subordinate son as his heir. He thought he would be with his army in his whole life.

Later, the imperial family sent a team of beauties to Prince Jing, and the leader was named Tang Shishi.

His young, adopted son and his subordinates also persuaded: Your Highness, this is a beauty trap.
Jing Wang: I know.

The so-called beauty trap was merely a bait for those who wish.

I love how different of a josei this novel was from the other ones where I have to cry for a hour to continue reading. IBTBTED is hilarious for the most part and I genuinely laughed out loud many times to my own surprise. MC is a level 3 troll and the ML is a level 99 troll king. I recommend this novel to anyone who wants to not have their heart stomped on for a while.

Reading the first half f this novel can be so frustrating, I just skipped some parts. FL character is a little dumb, keeps trying to seduce the shizi and not seeing the wangye in front of her. I guess the writer want it to be more humourous instead of a serious novel. However, once FL and ML got together, its all good. And I did read until the last chapter.

So beautiful.

Loved how spirited the FML is. The story is so funny and adorably sweet, however the build up of the main couple is so well paced, they both earned each other feelings.

The intrigues of the harem were kinda cliche but entertaining, the slapping of faces was satisfying and the tense moments were so intense that I could not stop reading.

... more>> The translation is so good, the notes explaining the terms were easy to understand. I'm very grateful to the translator because they did such an amazing job.

I usually don't enjoy reading the extra stories that tell about previous lives and show the supposedly original storyline just to show the suffering of the characters more detailed. But the extra stories in this novel are so unique and funny, sweet and tender with just the pinch of angst to leave a lasting impression.

I like how every single of the FML's actions makes sense, how honest and sincere she was about what she wanted and how she fought with her head and doing the best she could at every turn. It was as inspiring as it was hysterically funny when she failed epically over and over again.

Although I admit the beginning was a bit annoying it was so worth it in the end. <<less

A comedic romance - the FL is not always the brightest, but that's intentional. The ML is cold and stern in his life, but excessively doting and has no bottom line when it comes to her, which seems to be a trope this author likes.

Some readers complained that she's annoying, and the summary was misleading as she didn't switch her target for quite awhile. That's true, but that's where the comedy comes in. She is attempting to rewrite her bad ending and ... more>>

failing miserably, as she can only read the future chapter titles and guess what events are coming, and she's genius at picking the wrong action. I laughed to death when she proudly got into a drinking contest because her tolerance is crazy high, only to discover she was supposed to get drunk after a couple of glasses, leave to recuperate, then run into the ogML and deepen their relationship.

Honestly, from the bits it dropped about the original story, I would NOT want to be the ogFL, as her life sounded miserable and the guy sounded like a horrible jerk. But I suppose being the heroine of even a crappy romance is better than being the cannon fodder of that same crappy romance. Tang Shishi is not an admirable character in many ways. She's arrogant, selfish, and extremely petty. She stirs up trouble and frankly makes life miserable for the people she doesn't like. From her POV it makes sense because these are her enemies and she's usually keeping them busy fighting each other so they don't bug her, but in another story she'd be the villain for sure. Based on the author's other stories, she likes to have imperfect FL characters that are nevertheless deeply adored by the ML - it even notes clearly that he loves her for who she is despite knowing all her faults (he does frequently mention that he must have owed her dearly in a previous life, which figures in a bonus story). I think that's the point of the author, to have the guy like a flawed FL instead of a super talented perfect girl. There's also always another man that pines obsessively after her, often after losing his chance foolishly.
Spoiler

The ogFL and ogML are no prizes either though. He seems good on the surface, but is actually a hypocritical, backbiting jerk that apparently can't control himself around women.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The ending bonus chapters were great - one shows their kids, and the other is an alternate timeline for our FL and ML where she meets him as a ghost and their romance goes in an entirely different direction. I would have loved one more chapter, but this tied things up pretty nicely.

Don't worry about others reviews, there's definitively love in the story, Tang Shishi has some problems on decision making and her plans are so thrilling I can't barely look at which are pros not cons in this story.

This is one of the best historical romances out there to read.

I love it! The FL is a bit frustrating in a sense she's not that smart and has temper but well the ML dotes on her. I love the kids and I love the side stories.

Interesting plot of a not that smart but optimistic and exceptionally beautiful FL and how she tried to change her fate by using a mysterious book. Storyline moves along well and keep the reader engrossed. Funny bits of how she bullies him but he just takes it as ‘he owes her in the previous life’. The extra chapters of their kids and her past reincarnation was a sweet bonus.

It has the usual idol drama type plot. A little fluff here and there. But I don't like that through out the entire novel, the FL just rely on dumb luck and she's a little s*upid too. After awhile it gets boring.

"MC is the typical harem villainess— not too smart, petty, overly ambitious, and always looking for trouble. To my surprise, I loved her because she is a not-too-good person amidst not-too-good people. Her bottom line is very flexible, and sometimes she is driven by desperation (she is really not smart), but there is a bottom line for her actions.

There is only one thing that made me uncomfortable.

The constant emphasis on how 'blood is thicker than water' made me feel uncomfortable. I know it is set in ancient times and is fictional, but I think it should be pointed out that this was not adoption per se, but more like hiring and g*ooming a young talent. The difference in the treatment of the two sons is a choice of the ML and, in my opinion, should be assumed as such and not just justified as normal because 'blood is thicker than water.

But I liked this novel very much. It felt refreshing :) <<less

This is now one of my favorite CN novels. I couldn't put this down, it was so good.

I'm so glad we didn't get another OP Mary Sue. The MC is woefully imperfect. She's selfish, hypocritical, brash, and self-serving. Unfortunately, she's a bad liar and terrible at strategizing. People can see right through her and all her schemes end up backfiring-- often hilariously. I agree with another reviewer when they wrote that she's a bit like Bridget Jones.

Spoiler

Some of my favorite parts are whenever she gives her adopted adult son (Shizi) a new concubine. Before the ML married the MC, Shizi's wife bullied the MC. So after the MC gets married, she's like: I think we should allow Shizi's banished concubine to return. She's suffered enough. Shizi's wife banished the concubine because her husband and the concubine are in love.

The MC and the concubine are enemies, so she says : "Shizi still doesn't have an heir. Let's him a couple more concubines." Naturally, her enemy is thrilled.

As you can imagine, there's all kinds of catfights and drama. Naturally, MC is *horrified*: why can't they be nice to each other? Do I need to go in and clean house?

[collapse]

The author writes the best MLs. He's not overbearing, at least not to the MC. He loves her because of her imperfections and quirks. He's also a bit henpecked.

The translation is solid. If you liked Greetings, Ninth Uncle you will like this too. <<less

I actually enjoyed reading this very much! It has a bit of everything - romance with a comedic undertone, some mild angst. I would have liked to see more of the political intrigue but since we're reading mostly from MCs pov, it's understandable we aren't privy to much of whats happening in court. The undercurrents are almost always felt though.

MC's character isnt morally upright, she just ruthlessly grabs on to whatever she can to get to her goal. Shes quite forthright about wanting to scheme and thats whats refreshing about... more>> her. Some reviews are failing to note that
Spoiler

once she was sent to the Jing Wangfu, thats where she was destined to live/d!e. She is a spy sent by the wangye's enemy - a small misstep and she will be k!lled - either by the Wangye or by the Emp Dowager. So when she got an opportunity to make things work for herself, she took it. Wouldn't anyone? Yes, she tries her best and schemes to get with the shizi but what about it? She clearly mentioned that she doesnt care for love - she wanted to get to a position where she wouldnt completely be at the mercy of others. Considering the time period and her situation I dont find anything wrong with it. Even the FL, ruthlessly ruined the lives of three women. She got away due to her FL halo and ML's feelings again and again.

[collapse]

Yes, all the characters are flawed, but that was one of the things that made the novel fun. Not all of MCs decisions are good, shes really stup!d sometimes, unnecessarily did stuff that brought no benefit. But it is what it is lol. The extra is really sweet.

Spoiler

I do want to know why shizi felt/when he realized that Wangye liked TSS in the original timeline.. Just cause of the pearls? And where do shizi's feelings stand? I wish we got a tiny chapter with his pov because he is terribly canon fodder for someone who's supposed to be a ML

[collapse]

All this being said, its a breezy read.. It doesnt have an overly heavy plot or gripping schemes. The TL was pretty good, a few typos but thats nothing major. 4 stars. <<less

Actually a very sweet and fluffy romance with a tender patient ML and a pampered FL. The biggest plus point for me was how much the ML loves, dotes on and protects the FL. He puts in a lot of effort to spend time with the FL, constantly shows her how much he cares about her and constantly empowers her to be as spoilt as she wants to be. The FL is also quite a lovable character sometimes as she’s very frank about herself in terms of her wants and... more>> needs and her motivation to do whatever she does is pretty reasonable given her background. She also normally chooses to do the right thing by the ML whenever he’s in danger (even before they got together).

Minused two points because FL is too incredibly lucky and very s*upid.

Spoiler

why I say she’s s*upid:

1. She targets shizi rather than jing wang despite what she reads in the book about her ending as his concubine. There’s no basis for her to think that her ending will be different if she winds up as his concubine and he doesn’t outwardly give her any signs that he favors her over other women and in fact clearly shows his preference for another woman but she refuses to give up and continually tries to seduce him. It’s repeated a few times in the book that she thinks shizi is easier to seduce and fool compared to jing wang, but even if he’s dumber than jing wang, why does she think she can control him? There’s never a plan for what she will do as his concubine to ensure her survival and every single time she approaches him, he rejects her. Wouldn’t it make sense to give up and think of another plan? But she doesn’t. She continues to persist to try to be his concubine until she is basically forced to give up.

2. She tries and fails repeatedly to use the hints from the book to approach shizi and interrupt ZSH. Not once is she able to interrupt the progress of the romance between shizi and ZSH or to seduce shizi using these hints.

3. She doesn’t rly try to seduce shizi outside of the hints she receives in the book.

4. After she’s together with jing wang and pregnant, she continues to try to be on good terms with shizi. But this is despite the fact that she knows that in the book, shizi not only secretly killed off jing wang but also removed all traces of him and basically created his biological parents as the previous emperor and empress. Why does she not think that if he’s treacherous enough to kill off an adoptive father that raised him for more than 10 years, he won’t have a problem killing off his adoptive father’s wife and biological child that could potentially threaten his throne.

why I say she’s incredibly lucky:

1. The people that can threaten her all trust her inexplicably until they no longer need to. The empress dowager and her minions trust and push up the FL even though she basically does nothing for them as a spy from the time where she’s in close contact to jing wang in the study room all the way up till she is jing wang fei. She even actively hurts the empress dowager’s cause by removing the beauties that were sent by the empress dowager but this is simply explained away with the fact that she’s now a more valuable pawn but again she’s never actually done anything helpful for the empress dowager. She’s only abandoned by the empress dowager when it’s not a danger to her anymore.

2. When she makes mistakes that should get her in trouble, she solves a problem she wasn’t even aware of. Like when she made a fuss with ZSH and RYJ and poured some liquid on RYJ’s dress but it turns out to be a good thing because it reminds jing wang of his mother and that is forbidden in jing wang’s manor.

3. She was drugged in a town far away but mysteriously managed to stay conscious long enough to get home and look for jing wang.

[collapse]

It would actually be preferable to me if the author wrote the FL as more obviously blur rather than writing her as someone who’s intelligent enough to clearly recognize issues but has a ridiculous plan to solve it. The author’s way of writing people’s reactions or judgment of FL as foolish or secretly intelligent according to whatever is necessary for the storyline at that particular point in time also makes it more jarring because the FL is really only good at being really beautiful, sucking up to people and being pampered.

On the whole it was a fairly enjoyable read because the romance is adorable and fluffy especially after they get together (though their interactions are already pretty cute even before) but some parts were frustrating because of whatever I mentioned above. <<less

I absolutely love reading this (funny) romantic ancient novel.

It wasn't love at first sight for Zhao Cheng Jun, but Tang Shi Shi's eccentricity, quirkiness and childishness made him fall in love with her. Once this ancient cold man falls in love, he falls in love hard. His love, loyalty and dedication to her finally made Tang Shi Shi reciprocate his feelings.

Love reading the relationship and daily interaction between Zhao Cheng Jun and Tang Shi Shi. "They're 2 strangers brought together by fate". It started as Wangye & 1 of the... more>> women in his Wangfu, and finally, it materialized to love. Their age difference makes them even more unique. They're just an adorable cute couple.

Though I hate reading the scheming in this story, on the other hand, it strengthens the relationship and love between Zhao Cheng Jun and Tang Shi Shi.

This novel reminds me of another novel, I Became The Stepmom of My Ex-Husband. I love reading them the same. I plan to read it again in the near future. <<less

The basic plot has some interesting tweaks to make it stand out. The Comedy style is 'comedy of errors', where despite having guidance to what will happen, the FL always manages to get unintended results. She isn't as smart as she thinks she is, and is always being misunderstood.

As this isn't a Comedy style that I find very funny, this isn't the novel for me, but if you love a comedy of errors you'll enjoy this a lot.

It was a pretty fun story. Had me invested all the way. The FL is a vicious villian type character who was meant to fail at every turn (she is very self-willed but a bit dumb and not good at lying). She ends up getting everything her way by the power of the ML (who is a bit hopeless but very intelligent). They compliment eachother well.
