His name was Duan Ling. He used to be nothing more than an illegitimate child with humble beginnings. As a child he had his fill of neglect and torment until a mysterious man named Lang Junxia took him away from the Duans. Lang Junxia fed him, put him in school, and made him a new home. Lang Junxia told him that when the peach trees blossom his dad would come get him.

Then his dad really did come. He was far more impressive than Duan Ling imagined, far more dashing, far more omnipotent. It turned out that Duan Ling wasn’t a bastard whose paternal lineage was in question after all. In his veins flowed the most noble Han imperial blood, and the empire was supposed to belong to him.

But in troubled times, with the beacons of war lit in all four corners of the world, his dad said everyone had a destiny that befit them, and their destiny was the way of benevolent rule, that was why they could never remain content with their little corner of the world. They were destined … to carry the enmity of an invaded empire, to bear the pain of losing their homeland; to live as the self required.

I binged this novel in like 3 days and I'm amazed by the story telling. To be honest, the first 30-40 chapters do not have much romance so do not expect a lot of that in the beginning, the world building is amazing and the MC's background will make you cry.

My 2 favorite characters in this novel are:

  1. Spoiler

Li Jianhong - I loved it his fatherly antics with Duan Ling and was so heartbroken when he died....I just couldn't believe it

    [collapse]
  2. Spoiler

Lang Junxia - I think people love and hate his character. Reading his story in the Epilogue and Poppies really had me think that perhaps he isn't as heartless as he appears to be. I also bawled when he gave his life for DL...I don't think he ever stopped looking after him.... whether it be for LJH or himself

    [collapse]
I also couldn't guess the ML... maybe it's because there are so many male characters in this novel and his appearance was overshadowed by all of them. Overall, if you like palace, historical novels then you should definitely give this one a try! It is quite challenging to remember all the names, roles, factions, cities, etc. but the story building is definitely worth it.

All I have to say is there’s a tragedy tag for a reason so please keep that in mind. After reading reviews here and there people kept saying that the tragedy is not « that tragic » but if you are sensitive just skip and take care of your mental health.

the story in incredible, the world building is chef’s kiss, the writing is so poetic and beautiful but it’s heavy and if you’re like me you’ll end up wounded and crying for hours on the verge of depression lol

so unless... more>> you like tragedy and heavy emotions please go ahead you’ll never regret it, for those like me please read something else like To rule in a Turbulent world (still tragedy but bearable) <<less

No cap. Just read.

It has been long since I sincerely cried for a book. I cried.... and cried.... and cried.

I love them characters. Unique and realistic to the atom of their existence.

This has ranked top ten in the hundreds of books I have read.

Just thinking about it makes me want to cry even more.

You shouldn't miss this book, I had put it off for a long time beforehand and would have cursed myself to death of I missed such a gem.

It thought me a lot.

I've put this off time and time again as I don't really like heavy political novel. The cover and title also intimidated me, I never fared well with heavy world building kind of novels. But!! This greatly exceeded my expectations in true FTYX fashion. First of, I skimmed the first arc or the first book and a few chapters of the other book/arc, as I started this with the idea of getting it out of my reading list, only stopping when the scene seemed important. It's up to you to... more>> read it however you like of course and I don't really regret doing that haha.

Then, I read and read just wanting to get to the scene where the leads get together or the reveal scenes. I couldn't stop myself from looking up the carrd which inevitably spoiled me by I don't mind as I actively seeked spoilers myself😂. Then I read, and read. And read again just to finish it not stopping even for a meal, I didn't even notice that I was already hooked and started reading in earnest! I felt sad, overwhelmed with emotion, indignation, surprise and frustration!! I just wanted to say to our MC to jiayou!! At times I wanted him to give up and just live outside of politics then I remember his dad and sigh.

this novel exceeded every expectation I had of it before I started. The feeling it gave me was one unforgettable. I may forget the contents overtime but the feeling it gave me would be remembered. The love between the main CP is also good, and I love how they love. Every characters have depth, there's death, separation, and reconciliation. There's characters you'll love to hate, wondering why they don't just disappear and when they do, wonder why they did. *Coughs *. I won't give spoilers so you can immerse yourself in reading in true fashion. This is one novel where you shouldn't spoil yourself too much lest you spoil reading it.

If you get too sad, the extras are there to lift you up up up!!! Overall really good novel. Would love to read again to relive that feeling but I know I won't. This novel for me can only be read once. Overall 6/5!! Read!! <<less

The pinnacle of Wuxia danmei. Such a captivating and twisting narrative from start to end, with beautiful writing, poetry, epic battles, and a sweet romance. Many excellent side characters with plenty of screen time and plot relevance. I cried over side characters! This is such an excellent novel, there’s nothing to complain about.

Stunning book, well worth taking the time to read. Emotionally gutting in the best way. I love all the characters deeply—this has one of my favorite MLs in any danmei I’ve read. Feitian’s prose is always a joy to read and the translator did it great justice. I’m sure this is a novel I’ll reread someday soon, because this type of intricate plot rewards it.

It’s not a light read, and it’s dense as hell, but I don’t think anyone can regret reading it. Honestly a masterpiece in my opinion. If... more>> you like political intrigue drama, don’t miss this one. <<less

In my honest opinion, this is a teenager’s fantasy book written for teenagers. It’s full of lovey dovey scenes and relationships. The MC just falls from one embrace to another and easily and readily falls in love with that person. 🤦‍♀️ It’s unreal. None of the characters are true to their nature. The assassins? 🤦‍♀️. I really don’t think the author knows what an assassin is. In this book, assassins can walk around in broad daylight, play their flutes in public whenever the MC is feeling down, and the... more>> public can openly praise the assassins for their skills and looks. 🤦‍♀️ I gave it three stars because the book “assassinated” my boredom while I waited for the MLB All Star Game to start. Yay Shohei Ohtani!!! Let’s go! Let’s go, Angels!!!!! <<less

Almost perfect for me. The only reason why I lowered this rating is the CP.

Don't get me wrong, they're cute and stuff, and I really like their characters alone! But the age gap really makes me weird reading, I feel like Duan Ling is too young?? ;A;

I think it's a good novel with a lot of potential. It started out very interesting. I actually really enjoy the first half and the time MC spent with his dad a lot.

Then come the second half, and while it was still interesting, but slowly as I waited to see how things unfolded, the "villains" started to feel a little weak and underserving of MC's deep animosity. And while it was still interesting to see how MC developed and grew, but there wasn't much excitement.

I think the "villains" suffers from... more>> being told to us just how much political powers they hold & how they're a bad person, but we're really not shown the full extend of their political plays so I feel it's a little underwhelming. Plus, the reasons for Cai Yan wanting to retain his position is also very weak. I feel he's a victim himselves and he had no choice but to make bad decisions from jealousy. But, he's a weak enemy.

I guess what it comes down to is that I failed to connect with MC on a deeper level and the political plot feels a little weak to me, so while it didn't bore me, it also failed to excites me. <<less
