Just Because I Have Narrow Eyes Doesn’t Make Me a Villain!

Description

I was thrown into a novel that hasn’t even been completed yet (and turned into a girl…), guided by the omnipresent voice of the unreasonable, amateur Author as he writes the web novel. I have no idea what’s going on, so I have to stick close to the main character to make sure I don’t hit a bad end…

Why are you treating only me like this!

I’m not suspicious, believe me.

I’m a harmless person.

“A villain? Not at all.”

Started off strong, but completely lost the plot

The story had a really fun and unique premise at the start—a genderbent MC with a chaotic "author" voice in her head messing with the world for laughs. Early chapters were gold. The MC was portrayed as a normal person who just looked intimidating, and the misunderstandings were hilarious. Especially the part where the story's "protagonist" overheard her talking to the author and thought she was behind a random attack (which the author caused for fun). It was chaotic in the best way.

Things... more>> kept building with this whole "unintentional menace" vibe—MC showing up at the worst possible times, scaring people left and right without meaning to. It was funny and had real potential.

Then... the romance angle got shoved in out of nowhere. The heroine suddenly assumed MC must be in love with the protagonist because "why else would a dangerous person stalk him?" (She was doing it because the author told her to for plot reasons.) That's where the story started going downhill fast.

The biggest problem? The MC's personality did a complete 180. She went from misunderstood but grounded to full-on broken sociopath, suddenly convinced the whole world is a puppet show. She starts killing off anyone labeled a villain, no matter who they are or what their reasons are. It got super dark in a really uncomfortable way.

What made it worse was that some of the "villains" were actually well-written and had solid motivations—like one who wanted to end discrimination between humans and superhumans. The MC kills her off without a second thought, and while her friends mourn her and hate the MC for it, the story doesn't reflect on it at all. No lessons, no consequences—just more edgy nonsense and a cringe secret society.

It honestly feels like the author got bored halfway through and just decided to go full grimdark for the drama. Which is such a shame, because the first part was genuinely great and had so much potential. I really wanted to binge the whole thing, but it just kept getting worse. <<less

I'll keep my thoughts rather plain and short. I liked it. I liked this novel a lot.

Quick disclaimer, however, the genderbending part isn't really a huge focus of this book. I still liked it tho :p

I especially found the back and forth between the author and the translator entertaining. I also enjoyed the romance a lot. Although I honestly wish the romance was better paced after the confession.

Spoiler

It essentially jumped from confession, to first date, and then to 3 days of baby making. Really rushed. However, the buildup to the confession was well paced and phenomenal. Legit makes up for everything.

[collapse]

And I enjoyed how the caste was written. It was funny and cute.

Other than that, the plot is predictable and a bit clcliché. However, there's a reason for that in the plot, and it's understandable. That being said, it's something you'll have to read to find out.

Also, I find it impressive that the author---the actual author---wrote this story without any planning. Seriously amazing considering it was well written and well paced (Except for the side stories). It's not some literary magnum opus like Lord of the Mysteries, Advent of the Three Calamities, or Shadow s*ave, but it's a good, fluffy, light-hearted read to distress from all the insanity. I enjoyed this book, and I think you will too.

Spoiler

I also enjoyed how the characters were vulnerable with each other. Seriously, these novels need to stop forcing the MC's to be super mysterious, secretive, and edgy.

This was such a really good and fun read.

The sypnosis doesnt really give this novel much justice. While yes its a misunderstanding novel where in the POV of the MC she is doing nothing wrong while in the POV of others she seems suspicious and malicious as hell.

The main focus of this novel is the MC's personal growth concerning her personal questions on "what is real" and "what it means to be a person". ... more>>
Spoiler

This aspect perfectly acted as the Damocles' sword hanging through-out the story especially since some developments that happened would have lead to a negative outcome (which one of the side story showed) luckily the "Protagonist" (designated in story main character) was present and gave the MC a very happy ending.

[collapse]

In terms of characters. I love them all. All of them are memorable, unique, and perfectly fits the story. I especially like the "protagonist" who acts decisively particularly in things involving the MC. What the Protagonist did to defeat the "main villain" of the novel was honestly really cool. I also adore the unhinged actions of some of the side characters.

btw I feel like I don't have to say this, but I saw some of the novelpia comments that took issue with this so I feel like I have to include this for some people. This novel is a PURE LOVE Story between the MC (genderbent male to female) and Protagonist (Male). If you can't handle that then take this as your warning. I personally like it here since it was such development, but I am a person that likes any love story (straight, yuri, yaoi, gender-bend, etc.) as long as it is written well.

The main story has 140 chapters while 20 chapters are side stories. The side stories are mostly slice of life stories between the MC and the Protagonist. There 3 side stories that I feel like should have been removed which were;

Spoiler

1. about the MC's day 1 in the new world, I feel like if it really needs to be included it should have been at the earlier chapters since this story explained why the MC thought of people as "dolls". I feel like it ruined the pace of the story when it was added as a side story since the problem was resolved several chapters ago so it gave a "why now" feeling;

2. The after story with the "author/writer" no particular reason other than it was boring. It was also in the middle of such a good slice of life; and

3. The "IF" story or the bad end story where the MC never ceased in seeing people as dolls. It was honestly so hard to read and a major pacing issue considering the previous chapters were soooo sweet.

[collapse]

Lastly I kinda wish a new series was made in the same universe with the last chapter of the side stories in mind because
Spoiler

It would really be interesting to see Irene (MC and Protag' daughter) inevitably discover her parents' past especially her mother's who was an actual underground boss. It would also be fun to see the development the world years from the main story

[collapse]

All in all it was a very fun read well worth the 7 hour reading session haha.

p.s. I am currently looking at the other works of the author and they look... well interesting and I'm talking about the thing with the hero and counsellor so I will probably read that next. Haha <<less

Pretty good, wasn't drawn out, tried to approach the transmigration cliche in a way I haven't seen before. With how it's explained, it might not even be transmigration really, if you told me that MC is just 100% made up by "Author" (god-like figure that apparently transmigrated MC), I'd believe it.
Spoiler

Apparently, "Author" isn't actually manipulating the world or something? Couldn't really understand it through MTL and I wasn't really paying attention. So MC is on the brink of breaking down because she was only okay with killing so many people because she saw everyone as puppets that "Author" manipulates. In an extra, we see when MC first came into the world and already killed two people, so "Author" had to tell her everyone are puppets so she doesn't go crazy.

[collapse]

Romance felt off but it was kind of fleshed out in the extras. We get 1 extra chapter regarding our MC's two kids. Wished it explored more about MC's narrow/slit eyes.
Spoiler

Near the start, MC and "Author" make a joke about how cliche academy novels are really only 1 year long and the rest of the school term until graduation will have the characters outside of school doing stuff. This really ends in 1 year since MC gets pregnant and drops out.

Haven't reached far so I'm not rating it but the author (character) reminds me of that one movie dialogue- "God's a kid with an ant farm, lady. He's not planning anything." It feels like the author (chara) hasn't got any solid plans on what direction the plot should be going (unless, of course, they are lying and they are in fact not the one controlling the story flow). Tbh if I was the MC, I'd have suggested he/she opt for a career change after the first hour of working together.... more>> Cause working for an airheaded boss is 100x harder than working for a tyrant...

Can't comment on much else rn. Because of the jumpy nature of the instances the world building feels like an abandoned project for now. The characters read more or less like classic japanese shounen harem ML and his gang, so that ain't too unique either. The writing style is a bit dry but the translation is good. For now it feels like a 3/5⭐. Will edit later. <<less

I liked it. Very fleshed out, most of the plots weren't dragged out. Also, the romance was kind of forced and less fleshed out than the other aspects of the novel. The only thing bad about this was that it didn't give a lot of time to really expand their world and story building because I, personally, would've loved more chapters about the stuff Arti/Arte was experiencing.

It's really great but it's just too short. Would've loved more chapters but, yeah, tis what tis is.

Great novel, please check it out.

It's a 4 star rating from me, because the TL (yes, the translator) decided to change a side characters gender for no apparent reason (why?), leaving me confused throughout the later part of the story as I was trying to make sense of this weirdness. TL's shouldn't change the story, even minor aspects of it, leave it to the author...

The passages in question:

Spoiler

parts, that are confusing/weird because of the translators change of Ha-Yul gender to male:

  • the overall seamless interactions in the all-female organization
  • Ch. 101: that weird attentiveness with the laundry basket situation
  • Ch. 115: ' Rawr! Investigator Lee made a cute gesture with [his] hands spread and shouted softly. “He got gobbled up.” '
  • Ch. 118: Ha-Yul as a teacher sharing accommodations with a female student (side character)
  • Ch. 120: mention of Ha-Yul in the line-up of beautiful female superhumans
  • Ch. 159: Ha-Yul and Teacher Claire in women’s formal wear

As for the novel, it's an instant 5* for me. The story uses the strength of the TS aspect to further develop the relationship of both the fMC and MC which ~90% of most other TS novels don't do, which I'm grateful for. If you like isekai TS romance with a sprinkle of misunderstandings, don't miss out on this gem.

A story that starts with an interesting premise that could easily make the story and characters impossible to take seriously, however it then turns that on its head, which really got me into it.

    • Characters
Both MC and ML are decent and get better as time goes on, also an author character has an interesting premise, besides these three, at the beginning it's kinda hard to get attached to other characters, mainly because of author's (character's) abilities, but it's hard to explain without spoiling. I will just say that the reader's view on characters can change a lot later on.

    • Story
When I started reading I was worried where it would go, because existence of author (character) inside story made it difficult to care about the story events early on. So I got really interested when my worry ended up becoming one of the main story points.

    • World Building
It revolves around author (character) and what she wants it to be. Again author (character) makes it interesting, basically being world building herself.

    • Romance
It's directly connected to MC and her view of the world she's in, and the people in it. That's main cause for romance and later on a "stabilizer" for MC. Personally I think it was great. I won't say much about it because it happens in the later part of the story.

    • Conclusion
I think it's a great story with an interesting premise that gets even better later on.

It's an okay read. To be honest I only checked this novel out because of the shallow reason that the main character looked like a female Walter C. Dornez from Hellsing with the monowire filament. The romance was a novel inclusion but I didn't think the two had that great chemistry. Overall I thought the two leads were okay, but I didn't really care about any of the supporting cast.

The most unique element of this story is definitely the author character. Honestly I found their dialogue pretty grating most of... more>> the time and disliked their presence, but I have to admit that the concept was interesting and that there was some very creative stuff done with them in the story. Saying that that character annoyed me makes me feel a bit guilty given that the character was definitely a self-insert ahah.

There's a bit of funny meta-commentary in that the plot is driven by the author (in story) not knowing exactly what to do with their story and then after finishing the author (the real one) admits they didn't have any plan when writing either and was just hoping things would pan out well in the end. I felt that a lot of elements in the story were very loose, and it seems that most of the reason behind why was for that reason. It's definitely fine to just go with the flow in the early stages, but as the story went on it seemed to be suffering at points where it could have benefitted from some more deliberate planning and a stronger sense of direction.

Ultimately it concluded in a decent manner, but I really wish that it went a step further in most aspects. It would be great if there were more books about narrow eyed women who fight using piano wire, as that's my type. I'll look forward to the author's next work.

One last thing, the translator changes some small details about the story, which I found pretty annoying although it's just popcorn stuff.

Spoiler

As another comment mentions, the gender of supporting cast member Ha-Yul is flipped causing some confusion at certain parts. I also found that the TL changes the main character's name with the protagonist 'Arte Isis' becoming 'Arte Iris'. They say in the notes that it was decided because of not wanting to deal with the negative connotations related to the irl terrorist organization, but honestly that's a little unreasonable given that

1. The name Isis exists already as a name of Egyptian origin, entirely detached from the acronym ISIS used by the Jihadists.

2. The name Arte Isis is actually an anagram referencing the Greek prophet Tiresias, who was involved in one of the oldest stories with gender-bend themes.

Changing minor elements of another's work for indecipherable reasons is the job of a localizer, and all localizers should explode!

I love most story involved with a TS-MC marrying a boy, the changing of a former boy into loving a man would always put a smile in my face. And this story does that pretty well, it might not be perfect but I still love it. What a great story!

3* coz I don't feel like the author chara is that good and a very bias opinion about a TS and a guy talking about still being a guy at the early chapters into being a maiden in love with another guy is big no no to me but I wouldn't deny it as others might be into it, just not for me... as I stand with people who says them being in TS is unnecessary but well... it could still have an audience and it is indeed a rare... more>> thing so let them have it.

I just hate the fact that I ended up not dodging the bullet despite not liking stuff like this coz I just browsed directly from tl site and no shounen ai subplot in its genre so let me vent a little here so yeah.

Ignoring my BS it is a legitimate 3* for me as the role of author could be a hit or miss. I just stayed thinking it might have some yuri (the genre I prefer) and the kinda rare narrow eyed characters and the rare string user. And the narrow eyed part hasn't been emphasized that much? and there's no yuri either which hit the more painful for me so i'd have given it 1* for the emotional damage that I took on myself which is my fault too lmao <<less

Absolute cinema 5/5

Somehow this classifies as a GB romance when it could've ran even without the tag BUT it makes even more interesting especially for GB enjoyers like me

Its about an slit eyed (of course) villain (kind of is) looking MC who was genderbent except one time during a past side story) so expect a purely female-male thing since MC doesn't have a dilemma about the whole gender thing due to Writer-nim (not the author) wiped MC's male memories while keeping his awareness of his original gender in the past... more>> way before the setting starts, And so the characters are convinced that MC is a undercover villain so they uncover her background but eventually get mixed thoughts as they find out MC is used as a pawn (for Writer-nim) and so the romance buildup begins there (Also the heroines are just wingmen lol)

And its also crazy that MAJOR SPOILERS
Spoiler

MC decided to do the deed and went on for 3 days straight after the final battle just ended a few days or so ago and yes they did have a child that early on while the academy setting was still going

I'm not good with reviews, but this whole novel?

Absolute perfection.

At first I couldn't exactly read it the first few chapters, but a dozen chapters later, I was interested in it.

... more>> The MC was great, the protagonist of the world is great. The few misunderstandings made it even better because it wasn't too small or too much, just the right thing.

The plot was perfect, the characters were perfect, the conversations with our MC and the world's protagonist was even more perfect.

The ending? Amazing, fantastic to the point I squealed in delight, even the side stories of sorts were fantastic.

DROPPED. 3.5/5*. FMC is way to OP but I don’t mind it. MMC is not bad but other supporting characters are bland. Only one who stand out is Amelia and she is annoying af. Author (in the story) is dumb and overall its weird concept when author talks directly towards MC but some situations were kind of funny so I didn’t mind. My problem is romance in this. Its forced and I don’t understand why MC has to be male before? I don’t care but it was not necesary. I... more>> don’t know but Artes sudden change in feelings towards MMC feels way to forced. I guess this was written by a man bc it feels like author really does know nothing about how really females should be in romance novels with female MC. But its just my opinion, its not bad. the ML is HIM

Spoiler

with how the MC first like 5min went after being kidnapped to a different world went, its kinda understandable why she sees everything as doll, especially adding on the various things the "author" tweaked about the world itself right in front of her as the story progressed

to sum up, how would you feel if you were walking then suddenly you are in another world, in a different body, almost got rped and sold, some sort of power came out of your body and slices people into minced meat... which then got deleted as if they were never there, all while a voice keep on talking in your head... all in the span of a couple of minutes

the character development are amazing too, towards the later half of the story its peak romance and solidified the ML position as HIM, like bro is such an amazing character oml

Slight spoilers ahead:

The MC has to come to terms with the question of "What is real?" in this world where she was thrown into by the author. With thoughts slowly creeping up her mind that the Author may be able to change everything and anything (including her), she is disconnected from reality.

Overall the characters really add on how fun it was to read, especially when it related to the romance aspect. The world building could've been a bit more fleshed out but perhaps it was limited due to the Author's & Arte's perspective as well as the general aim of the story. <<less

Its pretty good, has a unique feel to it since the Unreliable Narrator is actually an Unreliable Narrator that needs to chill out. I will say the action really falls off in the later parts of the novel and there is a lot of filler that makes sense. Its not perfect but still a solid read that isn't that long.

4 stats the begining, it is a good begining, it is creative and interesting but it falls apart for me midway, some may say the romance was forced or the characters are bad, I think the romance wasn't good. It is clear the author didn't have a solid plan and it abandoned what I initially liked at some point.

It rubs me the wrong way after a certain point. I tried to keep reading to see if it gets better eventually, it did not to me.
