Kenkyo, Kenjitsu o Motto ni Ikite Orimasu

It was something that happened while I was waiting for the day of the primary school entrance exam. I realised that I had become one of the characters of a shoujo manga that I loved reading in my old life, ‘You Are My Dolce’.

The role I was assigned was a character who bullied the commoner protagonist and tried to get in the way of her love with a rich boy nicknamed Emperor; a typical villainess rich girl, Kisshouin Reika.

At the end of the story, Reika suffered the Emperor’s retribution and even her family fell into ruin. With the villain gone, the protagonist and the Emperor overcame their trials and became a couple. And they lived happily ever after.

Wait, that’s terrible for meee! The manga ended there, but I have to continue living my life after my family is ruined!

The protagonist can enjoy her romance or love or whatever on her own. I’ll erase my presence so that I don’t anger the Emperor.

Eh-? The story isn’t progressing well because there’s no villain, you say? But I’m busy saving up money and studying so that I can live well after the collapse.

Ugh. I hate it it when I've caught up, I get this huge sense of loss.

Anyway, the first thing you need to know about this story; the romance.

Spoiler

It isn't there. I mean like 152 chapters, Our Girl, Reika hasn't as much as held someone's hand romantically. Oh there have been guys she was interested, but a few chapters later, they'll be unavailable. And she's on 2nd year of high school already, so the original plot of the game is already close to ending.

[collapse]

Story: 3.8/5

Spoiler

I don't read Shoujo often. It's fine for craving fluffy scenes. However, Kenkyo Kenjitsu has this constant back and forth with certain plot devices. For example, Reika's weight. After every 10-20 chapters, you'll constantly get Reika worrying about her weight then exercising/dieting/fasting like mad to slim down. The author uses more than her weight. For example, her grades, the romance, etc.

I'm critiquing this as the actual Plot is tied to these events, sometimes nearly neutralizing my desire to read the next chapter.

[collapse]

Characters: 3.7/5

Spoiler

Honestly, the characters are entertaining, but that's about it. Reika herself likes to wave at Flag Events as she purposely passes them by. Not that she doesn't do her own thing, but most of the time she waits until things get troublesome because Reila herself is a coward.

The other characters are a bunch of idiots too. The side characters believe Reika to be the perfect Oujo-sama so it's funny to compare their POV to Reika's. However, there aren't any "Reckless" characters which is a shame. By "Reckless" I mean a guy that would, on purpose, try to approach Reika to try and court her. Oh there were some guys early in the High school arc, but they were quickly forgotten which is again, a shame since I'd really like to see Reika's character in a relationship and for someone to know the REAL her.

Also, Reika is pretty talentless. This is VERY apparent in Highschool Arc and also starts showing in Middleschool Arc. Like, despite previously being a 20 year old woman before getting reincarnated, she struggles to get into top 30 in high school, while her younger cousin gets 20th without much effort.

[collapse]

Style: 4/5

Grammar and word structure has nothing wrong with it. There are some misspellings, but it's nothing too big.

World Building: Food/5

Spoiler

One of Reika's biggest worries is her weight. The author constantly includes food in the story but never describes it.

No, it's much worse.

Instead, the Translator inserts appetizing pictures in the story!

You might get hungry as you read this.

[collapse]

Over all: 4/5

It's a cute story. It doesn't take itself seriously and there's no real drama, so I don't look too hard into it's faults. There are one or two tear jerking moments, but other than that, not much is rememberable other than Reika herself as she's damn adorable-tier-would-cuddle-long-time.

If you want something cute, light, and maybe crack a smile every chapter or so, I recommend you give it a read.

If you're looking for something more serious that makes you cry or roar for the character, I recommend looking elsewhere... Is what I'd like to say, but I have no idea what the next 100 chapters could do to this story. If the mood takes a nosedive to "My heart is breaking" territory, I'll let you know. <<less

It's a really fun novel, but very slow. There's romance, but it focuses mostly on other characters. As of this character, the main character has yet to love anyone seriously, though she does want to have a romance. Even if she does like someone, she shuts down her interest as soon as she knows he's taken. (That said, those interests aren't really my preferred pairing anyway).

I have no idea who she's going to end up with. I prefer Enjou, personally, but even all this time, there's not much romantic development... more>> so I'm somewhat disappointed. I'm not sure there's much exciting character development either, to be honest. Anyway, the translator is pretty good, my review isn't based off that. It's just not finished so I can't really give it a decent rating since I don't know where the plot is heading to 250 chapters in. <<less

First time review, so don't take it too seriously

Moe novel with drill hair ojou sama MC, which is personally my favourite type of character, though sadly they are mostly extras/side characters, which is why I love this novel on a personal level. I like how she thinks so clumsily, yet through other people (class rep and... class rep 2 and... *cough class rep 3), we see somehow she's still holding on, plus the other actions of the MC that we do not read from POV of the MC shown through... more>> oniichanandbestfriendduo that makes her cute and likeable. I loved to the point where I forgot (... neglected) the fact I have exams this week, and I spent the entire day reading (although I was not any better the previous days as well). Because of this novel, I might try to read other novels that is more on character interaction, rather than plot and plot twists and... sadly, plot holes (they try too hard sometimes), which is a nice break from all the xianxias I've been reading (I'm up to date, but sadly, not so fast translation speed.... disciple, otherworldly, transcending, a thought...... as opposed to the daily updates WoC and the insane translation speed of ISSTH). So yeah, if you're tired reading all those OP MCs, or caught up to translations (and is just too lazy to learn jap and chi), this will surely be a good pick to read (and like me, it might be your fav novel). No extreme tension, and the MC is just.... adorable..... it's really easy to get invested in (as what we see from the protests from readers to fasten up the translations) despite being so, and is once again because of the MC.

The things that left me irritated at times is the MC is too timid at times, getting taken advantage of/underestimated by some characters (oh, don't worry, she finally snapped at some point, which was quite refreshing). What left me quite disappointed is so far she has yet to "OHOHOHO!" despite being the ojousama she is (... not that it's important or anything, nor has she had the opportunity to do so.... and is not of her character to do, as well as being mentioned early in the novel... it is just me liking the ojousama characters... I keep imagining her having blonde hair).

All in all my favourite MC (ojousama, imouto, drillhair<3, kind, clumsy yet noble aura <3<3, suprisingly clever at times, glutton, desperate, and hopeless romantic), side characters that make her shine but are not uninteresting and dumb, and a setting that is really neat.

Special thanks to the hardworking translator (with a name too long) for translating this novel for us plebs to read, while explaining all the references like the poems, historical characters, japanese culture and norms, as well the food (damnitall). The novel is translated is so well I can see a handsome (nohomo... youreoniichanright?), youth with overflowing wisdom and... I, I'm not too good at this.... pointless flatteries to make translator work aside, I hope to see more of the novel, and I'm in your care captain! (Cuz basically, it'll take 5-10 years before I learn to read jap) <<less

The main character is hilarious and likeable, even though her personality is uncommonly ordinary and not overpowered whatsoever. She's not extraordinarily smart, cunning, athletic, or strong-willed. She comes from a rich family and has good looks, but her mindset of a 'commoner' from her previous life gives her a different personality than most rich, good-looking main characters. Although she's not particularly smart or cunning, she is smart enough to solve her own problems and stand up for herself. I think what makes her so likeable is she's relatable and down-to-earth... more>> in the sense that if she were real, she'd be someone I'd be fast friends with.

The supporting characters in this novel are all fantastic as well, with vibrantly varied personalities that stand out from each other. So far the plot has been kind of uneventful, as we are progressing from primary school and the high school arc (where the real action starts) begins around chapter 74. <<less

I really like how the translations are very detailed with this light novel. I was very impressed on how they put such great effort on displaying pictures and links to show the different kinds of culture that exist in the world of Reika. As a reader, I would really appreciate references in order to get a similar image that a character is experiencing and the group who's currently translating this novel did not fail on giving what the readers truly need.

Kenkyo Kenjitsu is a long story where the main character's... more>> plot will begin around her primary age and it will progress so on. It's actually fun to read and interesting! It's all about a girl who's keeping up with her model as a rich 'ojou-sama' (not for the reason on making the heroine and the male lead to be together, it was for her current family) and at the same time still doing the commoner things she enjoyed in her previous life (albeit sneakily). You can ship her with anyone although in the latest update, it seems her love life is nearly as impossible. Actually, she's a bonafide chaperone. Please hire her if you want someone to help you with your romance, she's really good. I highly recommend this light novel and the translation group (I also read other novels in their blog and their pretty awesome too) ! So enjoy new readers!!! :3 <<less

I really enjoy reading this novel as it is slice of life and comedy mixed with an interesting main character. My review of this novel is that I recommend reading at least 3 chapters before making a decision to drop this novel. I hope that my review has changed people's minds on if they're going to read this novel.

Very funny and light hearted story. Reika looks like a perfect oujosama but she's silly in the inside. I love how she makes jokes or thinks about the people around her in a hilarious way. I hope she finds some romance. This is one of the best translations

Mostly funny, kinda slow, slightly fluffy, and very fun!

What I like about this compared to most of those "reincarnated in otome game etc" is that the main character is super reliable, but still within realistic sense, and she's a very relatable person.

Review as of Ch.54, rated 3.5, rounded up to 4.

This is a cutesy, very shoujo manga-like slice of life novel whereby the MC somehow went into the universe of her favorite piece of shoujo fiction and taking the role of its stereotypical ojousama antagonist. Finally, a MC with the drill hairstyle!

The story is told very simply from the MC’s point of view and time passes quite quickly, punctuated by vignettes in a diary-like fashion. She sets out to try change the bad future of the host body’s original route by... more>> limiting her encounters, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to make a path of her own outside of the shoujo manga’s story. A reader of the description might think “oh this is a story where she tries to avoid the guy and ended up getting his attention” but it is still too soon to tell where the story would go. There have been several meetings between them as well the guy’s best friend, but thus far the story is more focused on the mundane: her school life, befriending others, commoner’s food, sweets, getting fat. The comedy and slice-of-life aspects are there in force, not much of the romance yet or what the story’s direction is (if any). The characters are generic but developed, some are given eccentricities that the MC did not know of when she read/watched the original fictional versions. We get to read about her on and off interactions with them, giving each character a flair to identify with. The charm of the novel thus far lies in her original commoner’s sense when dealing with idiosyncrasies of the elite characters in her new life. The translations are well done and the monologues of the MC comes across to tell us her character and feelings, and it is the MC that is the key point of the novel.
Spoiler

At one point she finally manages to get some degree of personal freedom and went to visit her original home address. The aftermath shows her longing and regrets which we don’t really get to read about in many other transmigrated stories. It’s just a minor event but it adds color and deepens the character.

[collapse]

There are many reincarnated, transmigrated, time-traveled and other such stories, but this one portrays the doubts and worries of such an MC quite realistically. How many of us truly remember the math lessons of our high school years? From her lack of memory and knowledge of her previous school life to finding an unexpected crush, the author manages to develop a MC that is believably flawed and compelling. Too often we would read stories where the MC come into a new setting armed with the experiences of their previous life and runs over any sort of challenges they would come across. Not this one. Where some MCs are initially hobbled by the poor or humble beginnings of their second life, this MC finds herself having to work hard to live up to her privileged background of her new family.

An interesting read, will be following to see what happens next. <<less

the MC is reincarnated to the body of villainess of her favorite's manga. While retaining her memory of her past life as commoner, she determines herself to not raise any flag to the ones who have chances to ruin her and her family. Her personality is quite cute and her feeling to people around her is pretty real. She has positive thinking and hard working attitude so you might be drawn to her cute monolog. The story can be fluffy and annoying thanks to certain idiot but the comedy part... more>> in the story is good so I am looking forward to her interaction with the heroine of the manga. <<less

Very fun read. It doesn't go super deep, but it's a nice change of pace from all the other reincarnation series with OP protagonists with huge harems. Great fun, and I love the characters. The chapters from the MC's older brother's PoV are some of my favorites.

She embodies my spirit- a potato.

Ahem, but seriously, it's more interesting than the generic dense and oblivious heroines that reoccur in the "otome game reincarnation" genre light novels. Diverging from the norm, her motives are... different from the typical main characters as well *coughwhatiwoulddo*
