Some of my reviews may be contradictory, because I've written them before reaching the latest translated chapter of said novel. Had I reviewed Kumo Desu before, when it was just Kumoko in the cave and the ocasional hero focused side stories, I would rate it with 4 stars. But now that I am at volume 12, I can't really stand much more of the writing. The narrative is all over the place, it's like in Overlord where there are tons of chapters dedicated to people that don't matter to the... more>> grand scheme of things. For some reason I can't stand this in this LN, it's more action focused, the battles are the highlight and so the long, boring "backstory" chapters are a huge turn off. If at least more chapters were focused on Merazophis, Sasajima, Sophia and other main characters it would be a little more palatable, but no, for reasons of "storytelling" we need to read pages and pages of Sir-What's-his-Name's impressions of the events before he is just unceremoniously transformed into ground meat or something like that. I keep reading it expecting for the finale, what really matters is Kumoko and the other "admin" characters, in the extremely cool mindscrews chapters
Spoiler

like when Kumoko finally meets D and realizes it's Hiiro Wakaba

[collapse]
there are absolutely no spotlights for Sir-What's-his-Name, Boring-Hero-Character-#345 and Generic-Evil-Guy and their plights, backstories, childhoods and whatnot. They don't matter. It's essentially filler text at this point. <<less

Spoiler

SPOILER WARNING PARTS OF THIS AMAZING STORY IS SPOILED FOR EXPLANATION PRUPOSES (but not like insane spoilers, more like hints to the cool things and some direct events that are kind of important) BUT IF YOU WANT AN HONEST REVEIW FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS READ EVERYTHING THAT HAS CURRENTLY BEEN RELEASED IN ENGLISH, HERE IT IS...

There are some ignorant people who decided to give this novel a 3 or lower, there problem is they are either idiots or they haven't read the whole thing (which is extremely important for this novel). I will now precede to tell you the only two problems (problems that I think are big enough to be worth mentioning) that would make someone give this novel a 4 but for me I fit them in with my preferences so I gave it a 5 if I could really scrutinize I would give it a 4.7.

Anyway first and arguably the biggest problem (this is the one that makes most people misjudge it) : I'll be blunt the first entire half of the story (that is translated) is generic, as this is an op protagonist reincarcination story in which the MC becomes a spider and enters a labrynth and has a system, from that you could tell why people call it generic. Although let me tell you something interesting, anyone who has gotten passed the 202nd chapter won't say that they will call it "basically a foundation" to the whole entire MAIN plot. That is because well... it is, I mean the whole rest of the story after that is clear and connects everything but the first half is just a mess of information that you dont know what is important and what isn't that is a problem in which I will tell you how to fix after going through the 2nd problem. Now, for MINOR problems which are commonly brought up in people who rate lower or equal to 3 they aren't the 2nd main problem.

One of the problems: They say that the translation is bad.............. shut up your retarted that's all, I mean this novel is originally written in Japanese which is an extremely hard language to read because its symbols for words have multiple meanings and also this translation was done for free shut up and take what you get or go learn Japanese. Alright next...

The problem: Calling out the author for trying to be too unique and failing, wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong just wrong you obviously didnt read to at least chapter 261 because if you did, you would have already became intoxicated by the uniqueness, the story gets unique after chapter 202 finale answer there is no doubt in my mind no matter what preference you have no matter what you hate that authors do after chapter 202 it is unique. Next....

The problem: The MC is way to unrealistically op she gets skills that cost thousands of points which take years to accumulate just by completing some action except for pride which is extremely op and she buys it for 100 skill points. TINY SPOILER! It is explained that no matter how many skill points you have you won't get them if you dont meet the conditions: actions/personality that is compatible with the specific virtue/sin ruler skill, strong enough soul to posses a ruler skill, and have the inteligence to buy and accept the skill (which is important because that means most monsters cant get one). She has two exceptions she is a reincarcenator so she is intelligent and she posses a unique skill that helps reincarcenator survive by lessening the required amount of skill points for skills (which means it isnt technically plot armor in my book because she isnt the only one with the ability plus she also loses it at chapter 202) thus you have no right to say she is to OPa DNA I didnt even mention the fact your bassing skill point gathering and ability gathering by human standard which is explained to be very very very bad compared to monsters. Next...

The problem I get pissed at the most: she has a non human personality she protects a town then suddenly massacres the town's side of a war and the opposing side, GIGANTIC SPOILER BECAUSE I CANT EXPLAIN OTHERWISE, for non human personality this is a clear showing you didnt read to the second half of the novel ONE MORE WARNING it is a HUGE foreshadow that she really is a spider which is explained in the second half when she meets the god that instilled her own memories into her for purposes... (still trying to be vague) I mean at the very begining the MC literally debates about who she really is and there are some big hints saying things like "am I a spider monster of this world that has a person from another world memories etc." I will give it to you I didn't get this when I first read through the novel but the fact that it is constantly implying she is a spider throughout the first half should tell you something. For the changing from saving the town to fighting them and there enemies in a war... she is a f*cking spider literally mentally and physically she just has human memories so at the base of her soul she is a spider who has deep hatred for humans and is also scared of them (which is also later explained of why she is scared and hates them) also most human turned monster stories have the human turn into someone who doesn't care about humans all thr time I could name tons of them; slime (for the plebs: That time I got Reincarnated as a slime btw im referring to the later parts of the web novel and after the last like 2 episodes of the 2nd season of the anime which means I'm emphasizing the fact that he steeled his resolve at those episodes and didnt care after), TWDS (for the plebs: The Tale of the World Devouring serpent), Apotheosis of a Demon – A Monster Evolution Story (never cared for adults specifically but kids were what she was partial to, even then sometimes she just didnt care who she killed), Re:monster (which might not be everyone's cup of tea but I wouldn't say its terrible) all of these are prime examples which I heavely recommend except for maybe Re:monster. Also I didn't even mention the fact that the side she was originally protecting started to attack her and they even sacrificed the hero (he didn't die.. yet) to kill her which they failed to kill her she just pretended to to end things it is also heavily emphasized throughout the rest of the story and before she starts mercilessly killing that "humans attack what they are afraid of or what they could potentially be threatened by even if the thing didnt do anything to them or even if the thing is beneficiary to them as soon as they are scared" (which isnt exactly what they say but pretty much). Next...

The last common problem: there are too many terribly long explanations of things that aren't really important and too many long and drawn out monologues, I cant say much about the long explanations about non important things they are there as kind of interesting facts and backstory kind of either you like them or you dont. For the long and drawn out monologues I cant agree that they are drawn out except that they are kind of too drawn out for some arguably dull and unimportant characters (oni and some of the other reincarcenator but they are just side stories you can probably skip through the onion as you can basically find out from the regular chapters but for some of the un important reincarcenator like the two adventurers you dont have to even pay attention to them they are so much of an insect at that point that even if the author said "I kind of got lazy and found this easy cheap content to put out" I wouldn't refute it. Now as for th e important characters monologues the whole storyline is based off them and even some of the comedy so if you dont like it I dont know what to say to you the MC is literally an introvert spider that doesn't speak the world language so she has to do that for the first half of the story but the second half is literally because she is so much of an introvert she actually can barely speak, for the others they help facilitate the story so I'll just elaborate a bit more later in the review.

Finally reached the 2nd viable problem: the side stories being in the future make it a confused mess or the side stories being in the future ruin the mysteriousness of the future so for the people who have the 1st part of the problem congratulations you are more ignorant than the last half but they are still quite ignorant okay so the side stories are in the future so either separate it or skim through important parts that's not all you can do but I will tell you after this. Now for the 2nd part people if you think the side story that doesn't even have the MC appearing or mentioned once reveals something your dumb it reveals nothing the only thing the side stories reveal is the world timeline. The main side stories are there for two main reasons the world building and to introduce a original protagonist (which btw is a very comical obvious laugh at the generic hero route that gets everything does everything and always wins while perfectly fitting it in to an amazing plot) that also conveniently is in a timeline that allows world building without spoilers to the mc's storyline but mainly this is all due to the fact that the author wants to keep readers satisfied until the main big storyline which is infinitely more mysterious and bigger of a secret than clues (very minuscule clues at that) that the MC incited a revolt on a kingdom which is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Finally we have made it to the part where I solve the problem of people not having the patience to go through the first half of the story that the author debatedly made perfectly so the reader didn't turn away till the second half. All you have to do is pay attention to the background world building of the side stories so you can recognize where you are in the timeline when it gets explained later in 2nd half of the story and casually read through the 1st half of the mc's story while either ignoring the various foreshadow's or just guess, fail, and figure it out later in the story in which you deal with it.

All in all this is a beautifully complex and well made story that I love. This isnt for everybody and I admit that the only problem that I feel doesn't have a definite solution like the 2 main problems I mentioned before is whether or not the author did a good enough job with keeping the reader interested enough to stay until the important part of the story I feel most of the people who dont like the story just couldn't make it to the good part thus showing some failing results. For all the legends that made it through this absolute monster of a review your amazing I give you a grand nai wa to you, and I realize most people won't read this sh*t but I'm f*cking bored and when I saw people dissing this amazing story I couldn't just let it be.

First of all, if you plan to read this, I recommend the light novel rather than the web novel since the WN is kind of messy. But it's still your personal choice, which of those two you would read first. You can also do both. But still I highly recommend the LN.

Okay, here is my review for the LN since I've never read the WN. It maybe confusing for the first few volumes (V1-V4) Since there are some side stories (S chapters) with different timeline. But as you go pass... more>> the V5 which is a filler, you'll eventually understand it and will make u get hooked to the story. Honestly, I'm really confused with the timeline when I was reading the first few volumes and got myself spoiled because I need answers to why bla bla. But it was worth it though. If you really can't understand it then get yourself spoiled. ಥ - ಥ Haha

And also, I also really liked how the author wrote the story in a way where you'll be confused at first but also gets you hooked to the story everytime you read more.

Well, overall, it is a very interesting and good read. I really recommend it for you if you're interested on how she survive with a Spider body, became OP and eventually evolved to a

People complain about the widely unbalanced costs of skills

Spoiler

The reason is that the cost of skills varies based on personal compatibility. Yes, Pride is easily worth a million times more than most other skills and will be priced appropriately for most people, but it only costs MC 100 points because she is extremely compatible with it in terms of personality.

Incidentally, the 7 sins and virtue skills basically give you something like a 100x experience multiplier each, stack multiplicatively with each other, and unlock ascending into a literal god

[collapse]

People complain that taboo makes you into a raging sociopath

Spoiler

actually what it does is reveal to you the truths of the world. Specifically that the system is designed to encourage people to fight each other for XP, because as they generate levels from combat they are fattening themselves up. as all of that experience will be stripped from the soul and eaten by the gods upon their death. The MC is so distraught by this revelation that she flips up and starts acting like a raging sociopath for a few chapters, going on a killing spree... which is a really really s*upid move by the author. But no, taboo did not permanently transform her into a sociopath, she calms down after a few chapters

[collapse]

Anyways, I enjoyed this story while it was focused on the spider. but she quickly ascends to godhood, at which point she disappears from the story and it started focusing on the boring and hateful classmates which I really couldn't get myself to care about. After quite a bit of chapters failed to return to her I just couldn't stomach it anymore so I dropped it. <<less

I love Shiro!~ I loved reading about how she survived & I was rooting for her as she fought stronger monsters as she explored the labyrinth, evolving.
Spoiler

This is a story about a spider, who in the beginning of her journey believes she is a human that reincarnated into a hellish world & was turned into a spider. Only to later find out she was a spider in her past life too & her conscience/soul was merely mixed up with an mysterious/whimsical goddesses soul, when she had died from an attack directed at said goddess. Shiro being a spider to begin with, is quick to adapt to her new body (monster spider) & makes a home for herself in the labyrinth. When suddenly she is forced to retreat from her weakness to fight off invaders, she realizes she isn't as safe as her 'home' made her feel. She then goes on a journey through the labyrinth to secure food, & look for a new home. She winds up being chased by various monsters & nearly dying multiple times. And in this harsh environment, she understands that if she wants to live she would have to become stronger. I love reading her views & watching her grow up, makes me feel like a mom watching their kid mature lol <333333 shiro!~ >u<

So the first arc of the series is pretty interesting, the multiple points of view and different interconnected story threads that showed up in the different pov's was a nice touch but between 150-200 things get really weird.

Spoiler

So somehow the MC gains the ability to split her body up into different locations and randomly invade the body of other people? Also, the MC finally leaves the cave and the demon king shows up and kills her main body but she isn't dead because she mentally took over her mother's body, the whole process for which happens completely off-screen without any indication it's happening.

After that the series gets really bad with it's different POV shots and loses pretty much any sort of internal consistency it had, fairly early in the series we learn that despite the main story being told at the same time as the side story with the price and gender-bender princess the MC actually happened much earlier in time while the other characters were still babies. Strangely though the MC walks out onto a battlefield where we find out she's the one who killed the Hero Julius despite that supposedly being something like 10-15 years in the future from where she was supposed to be time wise.

Somehow it actually gets worse after that. After that section the POV's get even more convoluted because they constantly jump around telling the story retroactively about how the Demon King realized she was being taken over by one of the MC's parallel wills and then went over to kill the main body that happened 30+ chapters earlier and then we get these weird introspective by the Admins having vague conversations that make absolutely no sense.
[collapse]

TLDR: It's a decent light novel for the first 150-200 chapters (depending on your sensibilities) but starts getting pretty bad both in story and writing quality. <<less

Disclaimer: I skipped over the side stories which I have heard might actually be more interesting than Kumo/the spider running around and killing things.

Repetitive and way too slow in my opinion. I don't think the pace itself is that bad if there were more characters. Having her stuck in a dungeon for about 150 chapters (even if those chapters are short) without interaction with other key characters just made the story hard to stand.

I stopped a little after she left the cave and met the god and had to "respawn" back in the cave. I thought the mind/body/etc. Versions of herself were pretty dumb - a bit of a stretch even if it is fantasy, and hard to imagine.

Kumo was so fond of Ariel that it was hard to read that she was forced to go never to see demon lord remaining life...

How Sophie, Mera and four little sisters spiders are just waiting in some north castle...

It was unbearable to just receive 2 sentence of Wrath just destroying his soul...

I don't believe that it is what Kumoko wanted for demon lord and her only friends...

2 sentence about characters that we were reading for 16 volumes. It is just unfair.

I don't know how author can be so disrespectful of his own characters.

This was one of my first web novels and I instantly got hooked. Seeing our favourite spider survive in the labyrinth was fun to read. I also liked how the story opened up once our lovely Spider went outside and saw the world.

She may have been with the Demom army, but she was our hero.... unlike Shun who was annoying lol.

I do think that the ending and much of the latter parts of the web novel started to lose the plot. After everything that happened, the ending was a let... more>> down and the war felt unfulfilled. Read the WN

Its finally finished after almost 1 year hiatus and thats exactly how it feels like. We got 12 (?) New chapters and it feels like the author just wanted to get it over with and finished them all in an hour. There Was a Ton of build up towards the final fight and then its just over. MCs Main fight just ends without us even being there (or It was finished before the hiatus but im pretty sure thats not the case). And the fight of the other... more>> reincarnators goes on for 11 chapters but its really bland and not exciting at all. None of the Main characters do anything and its all just some Monsters fighting instead.

Still giving this 4 Stars because I remember really enjoying this before it went on this long break. Especially the beginning Where it was just kumoko was a Ton of fun. The stuff about other reincarnators in between isnt bad but I don't really care about it. The time Skips are kind of confusing but all the Humor makes up for it. <<less

How I say the plot very good at the begining character progres good. I realy DID like this novel. BUT I am going to hospital for check up. I thing this made me CANCER finaly

The last chapters damn annoying characters became senseless and dull main characters became mob.

The most important think is that author destroying novel's logic. He make very good universe in novel but the rationality became empty.

When I fnish this novel my only feeling is angerness. All for nothing. The final is so blank

This novel sure got a lot of love and hate everywhere. Many people say it's bad or really good and honestly, it's just depends on whether or not you can tolarate the writing technique.

If you only want the writing to centered on MC, then you gotta think twice. Because this novel has a LOT of different POVs and you have two options: Try to tolarate it or Leave.

This story was a solid 3.5 to me before the massive shift of the story direction around half of the story. After the shift, the story introduces tons of new characters, each one getting quite a bit time of development before another is introduced. The interactions are all funny (for the most part) and make sense (most of the time). People are never out of character, they are well written and so on. I wouldn't say the novel is 5 stars, it has it's problems, however, it's definitely more than... more>> 4 stars.

All the problems I had with the web novel are fixed in the light novel. That thing is solid 5/5 <<less

Scandalf's review is actually accurate. The writing is indeed confusing, in fact, the author relies on this confusion to do something very interesting later on. And as for the fact that the MC behaves like a spider... That is actually intentional and explained later on.

You can think of the early chapters as like the foundation and the later chapters as the true story.

And if the fact that the MC is a female is a turn off for other males like me (I didn't start reading this until much later because... more>> the MC was a female), you should just read it because the plot twists and changes in the story more than make up for it. And tbh, the MC kinda behaves gender neutrally.

This is probably one of the very few novels with an OP character that is done right and with complex foreshadowing combined with unexpected, yet interesting unfolding of events.

I mean, if you want to read something, you definitely want to read something new, right? The Chinese cultivation novels are more or less the same, the otaku to a fantasy world that gets a cheat is more or less the same, and most novels just aren't as creative and daring as this one is. If you read past the apotheosis, you'll know what I'm talking about. <<less

Definitely one of my favorites.

I would have given it five, but I have one problem with it - I like it when there is one main character the whole time. It's fine for the first 200 or so chapters, when the side chapters from a different POV are just sprinkled in here and there, but then it goes full throttle into the POV's of characters other than Kumo. It just kind of ticks me off.

Of course, this doesn't particularly mean it's bad, it's just my personal preferences.

All in all, I... more>> recommend it. <<less

The author introduces Deus Ex Machina and has shiro randomly have items that just solve certain situations for her, the story timeskips so much along with it's excessive switch of pov of characters for past or future things in the novel, and the random power ups. This is a story about growth and change, both at an individual scale and a larger scale. We mostly follow Kumo, as she travels a massive labyrinth and overcomes many obstacles along the way. Side stories touch on the experiences of other reincarnators, and links gradually form between the main and side stories. For me, this slow revelation was very enjoyable. The writing style (and translation style, for blastron and RaisingTheDead) is fun to read, and really feels like the story is being narrated by the character the story is... more>> currently following, especially for Kumo. It develops a sense of personality that helped me connect with the characters, and was really enjoyable overall.

The story pacing is a little unusual, and I'd even say the genre and style shifts pretty significantly around halfway through the currently released chapters. More specifically, I personally enjoyed both types of storytelling, but that might not be true for everyone.

I think the joy in this novel comes from watching Kumo grow and influence the world around her, and I think that's also a pretty good summary of the novel. Eagerly awaiting updates. <<less

Kumo Desu ga started out SO fun. Yeah, that's pretty much it.

The plot was almost nonexistent, but that was fine, since the story was of Kumoko's fun adventures in the dungeon. It didn't need to be complicated. It didn't need any side characters. All the story needed was our extremely cute and likable protagonist Kumoko, the unlucky girl reincarnated into a spider's body.

But sh*t went south right quick when Kumoko left her plotless little adventure behind...

Spoiler

As soon as the main plot of Kumo Desu ga starts to unfold, we leave the dungeon and set foot into the greatly anticipated outside world, which actually turns out to be a major disappointment. It also leads to the events that kill any enjoyment or good will built up in Kumoko's past exploits.

What I mean by this is, throughout the story, you will read side story chapters about the 'hero' of the world. This is fine since it breaks the monotony of things and serves as an intermission of sorts. As this side story goes on, we are introduced to a huge conflict, teased with some awesome developments, and then cut off.

THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEMS BEGIN.

Or at least where the problems become more frustrating.

Kumoko's dungeon adventures take place a significant amount of time BEFORE the side story's events. This would be fine, except the author thought it would be a great idea to write about EVERY LITTLE EVENT LEADING UP TO THE TEASED CONFLICT.

It also doesn't help that these mind numbingly 'meh' events are padded by mental monologues so long that bond villains would say, "that's enough."

But if you want to get really into it, a lot of the problems seen in later chapters began the moment Kumoko left the dungeon. We're introduced to all these side characters, and given shitty reasons to care about them. Their perspectives are a chore to read about, especially since the Kumoko chapters become so lackluster compared to before.

But back to the plot. Oh yes, the god awful plot.

Within the hundred something chapters after we exit the dungeon, there have been TWO notable conflicts, with one just about to start. f*ckIN' TWO. The only chapter that 'wowed' me was a chapter where Kumoko got super mad, and it was a surprising break from the character we've come to know.

Everything else has been quite the boring slog after the dungeon.

I enjoyed the first 150 chapters or so, but once it tries to connect the plotlines of the different characters it gets repetitive (same content from different perspectives), and the protagonist's goals become muddled.

Still with a try.

Since I started reading Kumo Desu in 2015 it has been one of my favorite novels, over time it slowly became my top novel of all time. I am up to date with every English translation for the main series, that being WN, LN, manga, and anime. I have been looking forward to the WN's ending for close to 7 years now, and I can only say that the WN got the short end of the stick. To me, it feels like the author rushed through the story just to... more>> finish it off because they had just written an ending for the LN. I really wish Okina Baba had put more time into the WN, I personally would have been fine waiting a couple years more if it meant we got a better ending. I have seen the WN ending described on multiple occasions as being the "bad end" to the story, and I can only agree. Upon finishing the WN's epilogue, I ended up looking up spoilers for the LN's ending because I was genuinely worried about how that ending would be handled. After spoiling it for myself I can at least say it is a far better ending than the WN, but this just makes me angrier at the WN's ending. As stated before, I have been reading the WN for close to 7 years and it kind of feels like a slap in the face to the WN readers to end the WN in such a disappointing way. I still enjoy the story, the WN will always have its spot as one of my favorites, but I can't say that the Kumo Desu WN is my top novel anymore. The LN is still fantastic, but I understand not everyone can afford to buy all of the books.

Honsetly, I almost feel like I am blowing things out of proportion, and that the ending isn't as bad as I am making it out to be. Kumo Desu will continue to be my favorite series even after this lackluster WN ending, and I encourage anyone who thinks it sounds interesting to read it. But I warn that if you do not want to be stuck with the bad end, you should consume the story in one of its other mediums. <<less
