I had fun reading this up until the side stories became a thing.

It is nice to read how a spider survives and grow into a very powerful being. The hardships that accompanied her idiotic actions and overall it is funny.

The thing that did destroy the immersion I had was that the side stories got more and more focus as the chapters rolled. It gets very confusing and distracting to follow at times because it is also set in another timeline. Each side stories are just POV on side characters which... more>> is really unnecessary. We could have just followed the spider and get the same info instead of dragging it on these side stories which really just poorly executed.

Spoiler

You can see I hated how the author wrote the skill, it was never thought out pretty well like most of the WN out there.

The skills also don't follow any rules and the author just makes them like there is no tomorrow, I mean you could say Physical Resistance can have Blunt, Slash, and Pierce at level 1-3 respectively. And at level 10 you get total Physical Immunity instead there is another skill for it. As said the rules are nonexistent which made me cringe every time we get status reports that takes up half the chapter. The skill can upgrade to even better version but why? Its pointless if you have levels 1-10.

I would say this as part of the world building. And it is Weak.

[collapse]

In the end she becomes a tiring to watch especially in the later chapters because.

Spoiler

I will guess the author also got tired of writing in a perspective of the spider and just pull out a Deus Ex Machina plot twist to make her into something else.

She becomes a god and can transform into a humanoid form gets drunk (a lot and craves alcohol) and you will get subjected to her disgusting drunkard state which I question the relevance to the whole story.

After this the whole point of the story is basically ruined. It would have been best that it ended when she was still a spider to begin with. Totally disappointing.

[collapse]

In the end I didn't like it. I would recommend it to others though just don't expect that it will get better, but I guess that will be a matter of perspective. This after all became a guilty pleasure at this point. <<less

Lets see...

– Amusing uncommon MC.

– Great worldbuilding (really, its the first time I've read the story with the “game” world that totally makes sense).

... more>> – 2-3 parralel stories|timelines seamlessly converge into one, making it a good novel for re-reading. They are easy to follow but the way the intervine between themselves makes it more intersting to read.

– A few of the WHAT A TWEEST moments.

– Wide variety of characters with some (mental!) growth and proper personalities, they never say something out-of-character – quite rare for WNs.

– And well-written battle scenes with little to no luck involved.

Yep, its a well-deserved 5* for game-elements world WN,

a good read.

@charioles it began as a doungeon crawling backlog, then main plotline was carefully introduced in special\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\side chapters, by 150~ish chapters everything starts to get together beautifully.

@bom12826 it started focusing on side characters only when MC had nowhere to grow anymore. Side character stories are somewhat simillar to Overlord novell but, unlike OL, they are always closely tied to main story and MC’s previous actions have huge influence on them. <<less

before anything, I have arachnophobia so I might be a little biased.

this phobia is also the reason I started reading, I saw the anime and the title and hoped it would help a little. (i haven't tested the results)

to the review...

i read the web novel version, not the light novel. Overall I enjoyed the story, except the end, it felt empty. the final battle was there, because there was a need for a final battle. it could have been saved if the writers spend a decent time on the... more>> epilogue, maybe with a little time skip.

the beginning is also a little confusing because of the time jumping, this is fixed in the later parts of the story. SS does not stand for side story, but student story. it later joins with the main story.

all in all, enjoyable story except for the ending. it seems that the light novels used for the anime adaptation is taking the story in a slightly different direction fixing the course a little, I might look for it another time. I need a break from spiders... <<less

First before anything else, if you plan on reading this story and am therefore reading a review first, I would like to say that it is quite a journey. I haven't personally been following it for all that long, but I remember reading the from about 4-5 years ago, and have continued to follow the story since. The story has many astounding and overall extremely enjoyable action scenes, with lots of fun that isn't random and generic like other novels. It is unique and that is part of why I... more>> enjoy it so much. The story also begins building and actually foreshadowing future events with good storytelling. What I will get into later will include some spoilers for the story, though I will try to keep it as vague as possible.

Spoiler

I think that for those of us who have read the story, it is quite apparent that the final ending that came after the hiatus was somewhat rushed. However, even with that added fact, I still believe the story is good enough to make up for that fact. Although I do personally dislike the ending. (From a personal standpoint, not an analytical one) The ending gave me quite a feeling of nihility. With the way the story ended, it felt as if all that the main character and her side fought to accomplish was pointless. The goal that they wanted to achieve was accomplished, but with the goddess dying nevertheless, many of their own sacrifices, and overall very little reward for their sacrifice, it felt rather empty.

Though I can somewhat understand the author's view, if not that, then at the very least my own interpretation of it. With the story shifting, and the main character really starting to become more akin to the villain in the story, it is difficult to give them a truly "happy ending". Furthermore, with the story being more serious in tone, it obviously cannot be a story that will end in such fashion that even optimists will find it unrealistic. Even just from reading it up until the hiatus, I had a subtle feeling that the ending would not be an ideal one, at least for our protagonist. I think at that point, the author had really only a few choices. Whether to end it as she did, with an almost melancholic feeling, or to have Shun's side end up winning. The ending itself, while quite rushed, I do believe gave sufficient effort to honor each of the characters. Whether it was Kyouya or even Shiro herself, I do believe the story honored their character.

With the rest of the story, while I also started off hating on the many side stories that interrupted Shiro's story, which was extremely enjoyable, I did grow to enjoy them. Considering how critical the reincarnators and the other characters were to the final story, I felt as if those sections were very necessary and very important to the story itself. Therefore, despite them being "side stories", I enjoyed being able to understand the other characters and their motivations. Furthermore, it also breathed life into this world, making it feel as if each of the characters had their own lives and that the world itself wasn't entirely centered around the protagonist. This is especially reflected in the final chapters. Whilst Shiro and Guro's battle were very critical to the final conclusion of the story, the other battles and different encounters all nudged the conclusion closer to their own favor, though Shun's group obviously were of the next highest importance, after Shiro and Guro's battle.

One thing in particular that I had always idolized in writing was the capability to "make a world feel alive" or depending on the person, "making the character feel alive". This story, as far as I consider it, does a great job of that. While Shiro and the other reincarnators' stories might initially feel distant, their stories eventually merge and congregate, which really impressed me. While I'm sure objectively there are multiple problems with story, whether it was some of the side stories being irrelevant or perhaps the timeline and some of the setting. I am personally able to look past that, and willing to give it a 4.5 (Though I had to round it up).

Without forcing me to write like I'm trying to actually act intelligent, I have to say I am probably quite biased for this story. As aforementioned, I had been following it for a long time, and only recently found out about its conclusions and therefore came to finish the story. I don't remember much from the earlier volumes except really enjoying Kumoko's adventures and reading through the side stories thinking that they were pointless. I doubt there's a point in trying to be absolutely neutral when creating a review, so I left some of my personal thoughts in there. Overall, my review is probably a 1/5 at best, but so be it.

Not rating as I am waiting for this series to be completed. I read the light novel and parts of the webnovel.

The story only picks up after cave and I like the twist that is revealed regarding a certain character. Even though the MC is OP, there is an acceptable explanation for why she ends up where she starts at and why she gains power so quickly. The author never breaks their in-universe rules. However, the light novel is really quite long winded at times, and the beginning is really... more>> a chore to get through. In a way, the light novel expound far too much from the webnovel. Although this isn't the best I have read of this genre, it is still enjoyable. <<less

This story has an interesting premise, reincarnated as a spider she gains dragon-rending powers while she struggles to survive a fantasy world. I wanted to like it, but I couldn't...

    • The drama and plot is underwhelming. The first 100 chapters is all about MC's silly thoughts and random abilities, as she fights-or-flights monsters to escape a dangerous cave. I thought the start was best, a survival story with character growth, but there is barely any plot here, the world and characters are unaffected by her. The real plotline is that the world is dying and war is endless, the elves and her class are caught up in it, but it's horribly written. After escaping the MC is only motivated for food, she doesn't care, it's boring.
    • The perspective gets lazy. At first the MC is weak and scared, she struggles which makes the story interesting, you experience her problems in a relatable way. Later the focus becomes about how powerful and quirky the characters are, like a cheap action series, I couldn't get into it.
    • The themes are strange and unimmersive. The MC is a human in a spider, but she becomes much more, splitting her personality many times, getting involved with gods that transcend the worlds petty problems, it got so silly that it didn't make sense and just wrecked my immersion.
Conclusion: Kumo is a unique take on a big action story about an overpowered MC. It's silly and fun, enjoyable for imaginative folks who want an easy read. It's not for people who want a mature novel with fleshed out plot and solid themes.

Wow this light novel series is confusing as hell when you first read it, but after reading a few more times, you get to understand. All I'm saying is that 'the hero Schlain route' in the first volume of the light novel series is from the future of the 'main story route'.

I saw a guy saying that its kinda bad because she's killing humans but to me if you compare it to other spineless, idiotic, and gutless MC I think this is much better. The dungeon part maybe a little predictable but if you reach a certain chapter it gets good from that.

I would give this story a 3.5 if I could but Ill round it up to a 4. The story starts out strong, the MC is interesting, the fights and strategy are fun to read, and pacing and story building are good. Overall first part of the story is great a 4.5-5/5 in my opinion. The side stories peppered around the main story are alright, not great not terrible, I would give them 3-4/5 on average. However after the first main part of the story things started going downhill.

Spoiler

After leaving the labyrinth the action and fight scenes slow down a bit and even more so after she becomes a god. Some people disiked this part of the story however I still found it fun to read though less so then the labyrinth arc, a solid 4/5 from me.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The part I really think the story started to get worse was around the time of the elf village arc, the arc itself was alright still fun and interesting to read, about as good as the previous segment. My main issue was that around this time the frequency of side story chapters significantly increased and the story started to focus more on the side charachters while the MC just hung around in the background. The side stories arent bad but are far less interesting then the main story, I would give them a 3.5/5 in general for the wrath and Sofia side stories.

My main gripe with the side stories is with the Shun side stories, I find them to the the most annoying and least interesting part of the entire story. Shun is one of the reincarnators like the MC and can be fully described with 3 adjectives. He's a fanboy, hes indecisive, and hes pravtically useless. Half of the time hes just talkinng about his older brother who was a badass hero who ended up dieing. The other half of the time hes just doubting himself and everything he does. His only reason for existing is to eventually be a major part of the story due not to his own abilities but due to plot convenience. Hes surrounded by other interesting reincarnators such as his friend who got genderbent, or the guy who saw the world as a game and went power crazy, or his sister who was not a reincarnator but just a natural born genius who could have been a great character is the author dident drag her down the yandere brocon path, or just any of the other reincarnators doing cool shit. However instead of following any of those interesting characters the author forces chapter after chapter of this lame and boring character. If I wanted to read about a loser being dragged around by the events around him and doing nothing I would just write a journal and read that. While I would give the side stories of the other non Wrath and Sofia characters a 3/5, I wouldent give the Shun side stories above a 2.5/5 in the early parts or a 1.5/5 in the later parts. In the current arc after chapter 330 in the next 30 chapters the MC barely even shows up once with every chapter being a ss and nearly half of those being Shun POVs

[collapse]

Overall a good story that I would recommend reading, however it is dragged down particlarly in the 6th and 7th volumes by the author focusing on the least interesting character in the story. Still, a good story that I would recommend reading. <<less

This is honestly a pretty great novel. The MC is truly hilarious and she's what saves the entire novel. Some side stories are fine, some are less fine, but overall a very entertaining read. From chapter 1 to 122, I've read the amazing translation blastron did, in his tumblr, but he dropped it at 122. It's going to be hard turning to turbo's machine translated one, as it's very painful to read. I might drop the novel, but it's been a fun ride.

9.5/10

The plot and flow of the novel are really good and easy to read.

The power scale and ability system are good and it doesn't openly give the MC an unbeatable advantage over the other power characters on her level. Even though she does become blatantly OP in the later chapters.

Spoiler

She literally becomes a god.

[collapse]

Overall my only complaint is that it put a little to much attention on some of the side characters even though they were completely irrelevant to the main plot.

Based on other reviews, they seem to like the part of when spider MC is leveling up during dungeon arc and then think it declines afterwords. For me, it was the other way around. Before reading the LN, I had read the manga which covers up to vol 4 (but only spider MC perspective with no side story). Manga felt better overall if I only focus on the spider MC perspective. But I do like the side stories the are included in LN. For me, it got better after dungeon... more>> arc since it began to flesh out other characters better.

first 4 volumes are the dungeon arc where the spider MC figures out how to level up and get stronger. Its pretty interesting as she doesn't just OP for no reason. She does get some abilities that make it easier for her to improve, but for the most part she still must put in effort into what she is doing and learn different battle tactics. Side stories in this part are a bit jarring as their character take a long time to be developed.

Also, the story isn't linear so you have pay attention to where in the timeline you are. Their is also no omniscient narrator which is part of the fun. Each chapter is from the perspective of a different character and each learn different things. It is up to you to determine what the big picture is using the info each character learns.

After volume 4, it is less about trying to level up and more about fleshing out more of the characters. Since I like character development, I really liked this more compared to the initial chapters. After vol 4, author decides to focus on certain characters which I do think worked out well. I loved the character interactions after this volume of the spider MC with other characters. It does becomes more of a slice of life, which is why some people might have been put off by it since it was initially more of a dungeon crawler. The abrupt change doesn't bother me much since I like slice of life and timeline begins to make more sense after this volume.

I would certainly recommend this if you want to read about a reincarnated spider just trying to live after being thrown in into a pit of monsters. <<less

As recommended by other readers, I went back and read the light novels from the beginning after getting up to date with the manga.

Takeaway Thoughts

In short, it's fun, self-aware, and not afraid to throw in some curve balls here and there.

It's important to keep in mind what purpose the 'side stories' serve, which is to provide context about the events outside the labyrinth. However, those events are not necessarily chronologically consistent, so it's a clever way to lead the reader to keep in mind certain plot points that have yet... more>> to happen. Though this can be understandably jarring in the first few volumes, especially when the reader wants to see the MC progress.

Would you enjoy this?

If you're ok with inner monologues that sometimes take a whole page (LN), and like being gradually fed information about key plot points, then this would be for you. In other words, it's slow.

A common complaint that's raised by reviewers is that the early focus on procuring and leveling new skills isn't as important later in the series. To add my own take on this, I feel that it's just the author further emphasizing how taken for granted skills are in this world.

To conclude, it's been a solid read. In a genre mostly filled with power creep, revenge stories, and s*ave harems, it has been simply refreshing to have a story mostly centered on a lovable and quirky spider who simply acts on her whims. <<less

One of my best novel tbh

while the idea itself is fresh not like other isekai stories, it started off simple and cute. But the whole storyline itself is huge and a bit complicated. I also like that the MC is not op from the very start.

And I skipped some of the side stories, and the past arc :p I know it is important, but sometimes the author dragged the story for too long. While it is good for details, I don't find the scenes with potimas interesting enough sadly.

I have read 4 volumes of the light novel and all of the current chapters of the web novel. That being said so far the LN is much better at telling the story than the WN. The translations, explanations, names, everything is better.

id give the LN a 4 so far and the wn a 3 1/2.

Moving past that there are some problems that I have overall with the series but are bigger problems in the wn. That is the fact that the author repeats and rephrases the same info in... more>> different ways back to back over multiple paragraphs or pages for no reason. You will literally get the same information repeated to you in a different way, much like I'm doing now but more annoying.

This is one of my three major problems with this wn/ln and light novels in general. You do not need to spend a whole page reintroducing a character's quirks that we have been aware of for the last 300 chapters. We got it bruh move the hell on and tell the story.

I already know the MC is a jackass who has problems communicating, I don't need you telling me that again after reading 1000 pages of you already telling me that 500 times.

My second problem is the chronology of the story. I was hoping that the reason for structuring the order of the chapters would reveal itself later on but in all honesty, it really hasnot. The story and timeline is all over the place and it even switches for each character. The same character can have chapters in the past and future while the other character is in the present, then the past, the future, and present. Nah this isn't a compelling storytelling element but you tried it, author.

My third problem which isn't as big as the other two is very minimal growth in the main character (s). I like kumo overall but the way she goes about abusing certain characters, and the way she gets when she drinks is supposed to be funny. Unfortunately its not written well enough to come off as funny and seems forced and unneeded.

Still, this is better than most light novels <<less

i love this series and especially the characters. I'm not sure how everyone else feels but to me the action, comedy and the weak to strong were all amazing throughout the series except a few little hiccups but we can ignore those. The comedy in some parts were great!

i know in some parts it may drag a little but at least I can clearly imagine what the author is trying to convey and I like how this novel feels like it's a 2 in 1 for me when it changes... more>> at around chapter 200. The story (around chapter 300) & the plot all start to pull together as you get through the series & starts to make complete sense. The one thing I love about the characters the most is my feelings towards them keep on changing as the story gets told.

all in all, this is a 5/5 novel and I would recommend it to anyone unless they don't understand the game mechanics. This would be within my top 5 favourite novels throughout my life.

BTW I was playing dark souls remastered and met Quelaag's Sister while nearing chapter 300 in I'm A Spider, So What. So yeah I was fawning over Arachne at that time even though I'm scared of spiders. <<less

Has this series been dropped?

amazing series with interesting plot developments, a fun and charismatic MC. Having read a ton of crap isekai web novels over the years, this particular novel is definitely a notch above the rest.

My biggest problem with the novel is the really long dungeon crawling arc in the beginning. It’s good for kinda pacing the MCs power crawl and establishing the MCs character, BUT because the dungeon arc is so long, there is very little world building and barely a plot to speak of and the... more>> WALLS of skills text gets really tiring really fast. Worst of all, for an arc that focuses mainly on combat, most of the combat is really repetitive and the MC almost always relies on the “Deus Ex level up” crap to pull her out of an impassable pinch.

However, I still greatly recommend that you keep reading because the author really shifts gears toward the end of the arc and introduces new interesting plot developments, the combats get improved and it really is satisfying to se the results of kumos long power crawl.

if you’re worried of the boring process of having to read through the first arc, don’t be. Despite the bad things I listed up about the first arc, it really is an enjoyable read nonetheless, mostly because of Kumos precence and personalities (yes, plural). And the lack of world building is subverted slightly by the occasional side chapters.

After the first arc the rest of the novel is gold. Lots of entertaining characters and the plot twists keep on coming. 5/5

ps, I’m not a fan of the whole elf arc tho. <<less

Rating: 3, Translation: 5

[Rating/Translation scale: 5 = almost all readers may enjoy / infrequent minor errors. 4 = large majority of readers may enjoy / frequent minor errors or infrequent major errors, no difficulty to read. 3 = 50% of readers may enjoy / frequent major errors, unable to understand some sentences or a paragraph in a chapter. 2 = niche audience may enjoy / unable to understand moderate portion of a chapter. 1 = portion of niche audience may enjoy / unable to understand most of a chapter.]

I have... more>> read through volume 2 of the Yen Press LN translation, NOT the WN.

Summary: Japanese high school class gets killed in a magic explosion and everyone reincarnates to another world. The MC reincarnates as a spider in a dungeon and struggles to survive. Everyone else appears to reincarnate above-ground where there is an ongoing conflict between humans and demons.

Good: Has the staples of isekai. Has potential. Is a variation of non-human reincarnation isekai, which is a little less common. The author does give the MC a challenge, as she starts off with barely any power and skills. She has to use her intelligence to overcome stronger enemies. Not all reincarnators follow the goody-2-shoes trope. Some larger events appear to be happening in the background.

Bad: 2 main problems. First is I'm not sure if there's an MC. Half the chapters are about the spider girl, and half are about a guy who was reincarnated as a prince. The chronology doesn't make much sense (time skips years for the prince, but the spider doesn't have time skips and feels like only weeks or months have passed). Therefore I'm not sure who is the MC, and there's no strong focus on the storytelling. The 2nd problem is all of it is POV, and the majority is inner monologue. The monologue is rambling and feels like filler. I fell asleep several times reading the monologues that last entire chapters.

Overall: Variation of the typical isekai story. Has potential, not bad. Main problem is not a lot of focus, no strong MC to follow, and I think some readers will get bored of the monologues. <<less

this is a great novel I rate it 5/5

this is a typical reincarnation story with a few twists such as being reincarnated into a spider instead of a human

Spoiler

turns out MC is actually a spider with a humans memories tho... well I say human but more like an evil god who for some reason goes to school.

[collapse]

Pros
Spoiler

you get a great deal of side stories which show you the story from other's perspective, both other reincarnaters and a few specific natives. important to realise that some side stories are on different timelines and do not match up to mc's current time.

(If you completely skip side stories you miss out on a lot, even if you dont want to read it while reading the main story you should then read it afterwards to fill in the blanks)

great world building

interesting characters

Spoiler

the mc's personality never really changes much even though she has the memories of a high school student. so she might sometimes seem weird compared to others but she is after all a spider that has only lived for a short while before reincarnation.

[collapse]

Cons
a big part of this novel is about getting stronger and you get a lot of "status" updates which I end up skipping most of the time as its kinda annoying with the amount of skills MC has... but this is just a minor annoyance...

there are no more chapters even though the story is not finished... so thats kinda sad...

A truly amazing series. I seriously thought I'd hate to read about yet another reincarnation isekai rpg-like world with levels and stats, and perhaps I would if not for the change of pace which happens after chapter ~150 and ~200, when the author starts deconstructing the world piecemeal over a yet much greater amount of chapters.

While I found most characters really fun, they aren't really developed. Even the author lampshades that in his fourth wall chapters.

On the other hand, and the main reason for this score, the world building is... more>> excellent. The author really thought about everything, and I love everything about it. <<less
