I willl be short with this one. This story is a masterpiece that just gets better and better the more you read it. Its just super high quality with an amazing story, fascinating lore, intresting characters and great character development. Not to mention White (the spider mc) has got to be the best female MC in any light novel. Just all of it is a great read. Unless you are just dying for romance, id say you need to read this. Though I recomend you try your luck with the... more>> light novel version that goes more into detail. You can find it if you just search for kumo desu ga nani ka light novel.

Thats about all I got to say. If you have not already bought this on amazon, I dunno what you are doing with your life (XD). But for real I hoppe you enjoy this as much as I did. <<less

this is my first time posting a review here. The series actually can have more high promising plots but the author didn't manage to put it in the series. Like many other reviews about this series, this series only got people hyped only in the part like literally in the beginning. The author needs to change the title from "kumo desu ga nani ka?" to "kumo's former life classmates isekai adventure". There are too many pointless chapters especially involving the MC former classmates' stories while the MC gets like 1/10... more>> cover up in the series while the rest of the series are more focus on MC former classmates. I think this is the first light novel that made side-kick characters more important than the MC. Overall reading this is like I'm watching attack on titan. Really not worth the hype in my opinion. Better I'm go back to read high school dxd light novel that are far superior in plots aside from "ecchi"ness to get my interest back in reading some other light novels. <<less

I came here after watching the animated version, truth is at first I find it irritating whenever the screen time was focused on the human party because I was only focused on Kumo's story.

But later on the human party story became more and more interesting and seriously it has a very nice points that makes you intrigued. Actually, don't mind the spoiler comments,

lol, the way the author narrates gave you heavy spoilers if you look at the every phrase clearly. I'm interested to the clearer details on... more>> the reason why Ariel started a war, and all the other things mentioned in the early side stories.

  • Also, becuse of the side story filled with foreshadowing, I became less impatient for kumo-chan's human form, I mean, the extra's pretty much giving it away. And kumo-chan have few noticeable appearances. One more thing, I saw a comment saying Kumo-chan is shallow. Personally I think Kumo-chan shouldn't be called like that, rather you should say she's just less cautious and carefree most of the time,

but when the situation calls for it she will do everything in her power to save herself, although regarding saving others, I don't think she's the type who will sacrifice herself, but isn't that like simple logic? Regardless wether she's a human or a monster, both entities rarely have that sense of heroism, mostly people who's like that are either chunibyu, self conceited, or just really s*upidly kind. In addition to that, Kumo-chan wasn't someone who is concerned only about silly or inconsequential things, there are times where she would do excessive measures just to be a step closer to the state where she could atleast do something about the upcoming end of the world. If you think that kind of attitude is shallow, then, think again, again, think hard.

As a MC, Kumo-chan have a pretty unique personality, and also a uniqur background. She's in between good and evil, and I personally like that about her. She wasn't overly kind unlike the hero, (who really gets on my nerves) nor was she overly evil (i dont know who I can use as an description of evil here). That makes her someone you can admire without feeling like you're being to hyoocritical and also wouldn't make you feel like you're being too awfully fiendish.

Still not halfway done, but I'm continuing this ganbare! Me!

Personally, I don't like it. The MC is just... somewhat too shallow. Like she just takes whatever is thrown at her. I stopped reading every early, so I don't know if she become more mature or not, but the first impression of her personality is like this: "Oh? I'm dead? I'm a spider now? Okay. Let's go fight some monsters. Now let's go beat my mother. Now let's go eat some human!" She doesn't have the slightest development in her personality, her worldview. Like eating humans is something she has... more>> always wanted from the previous life so now that she is able to, she felt great about it! Maybe it's just me. Dumb MCs with massive luck is just not my type.

The power system feels dumb, too. The entire dungeon and the MC is the only one with somewhat intelligence? And her intelligence is not that big! And somehow the system which has been there for many years but just coincidentally no one has never found out about monster evolution pathway? No one has never spend great amount of time studying and experimenting with system and skill? And then some of the skills just sit there, covered by dust, waiting for the MC to pick up? <<less

I'm sorry but I feel the plot is disgusting, when I realized this, I shouted that's it all just bullshit!

Honestly, when I read it first I thought the story is unique and good. And also I thought if the stories have a "parallel place scenes" where all of the reincarnates be placed in different place and fate. Until I realized without the mention from the author the stories have not only parallel plot in place but also in the time! Past and future! With the same flow in story like... more>> happens at the same time!

The plot is really ugly. <<less

Why is the light novel not translated, but only the web novel.

Also this comment was created just to reveal a BIG, MASSIVE, ENOURMOUS SPOILER that is a bit of a letdown for me ... more>>
Spoiler

the protagonist is literally a spider, she is a spider reincarnated into a spider, the memories of being a human (Wakaba Hiiro) are given to her by the real Wakaba, a goddess concealed as the high school girl Wakaba who does not die in the explosion iof the classroom, that's why Kumoko, when speaking about her past life, often says "I don't know why I did that", and builds her home with threads unconsciously like a real spider.

I wanted to say it because, even if it is a wonderful plot twist, changes the meaning of the story: it's not about a human who becomes a monster and learns to accept the instincts, but about a monster (or animal to be nitpicking) who gains awareness as a human and becomes a real human (well, more a human-spider god with the appearence of a human).

Even if it is not the first trope (wich is really rare and even rarer to find a good novel of it) if she remained a monster then it would have been ok, BUT the author had to make her become a human with all the emotions and bad habits (even if a bit f*cked up, wich is the thing I liked).

Disappointed for the umpteenth time to not have found a story about a real monster (at least without human feelings).

Also really depressed because the previously male Kanata, our poor boy more perceptive than Shun but destined to be a supportive character, risking to become his girl (yeah, she now likes his friend), is killed. The only positive thing is that the girl version Katia is the ruler of c*astity. F*cking gender bender always ruins the story.

[collapse]

Well, with all this it's still a good story, but the real good part is the first.

EDIT: to understand why I liked it go read the recension of Pixeldrum, even if it is a bit long it explains perfectly the good part of the novel <<less

A rather amusing, yet intriguing take on the Fantasy Isekai with Game Elements. Told mostly from the first person viewpoint of a "peculiar" female MC, who gets reincarnated as a weak Spider in a hostile labyrinth. First goal, survive. Second, to grind, grind, grind until there are no longer any threats. This is a story told from multiple perspectives & timelines, which does add a fair amount of intrigue; however going from a Kumoko chapter to another character tends to illicit a few groans of annoyance, as it ruins the... more>> flow of the story. Such side stories would have been best served in much larger chunks, than spread about willy-nilly.

Nevertheless Okina Baba shows that even when allowed to make drastic changes when ascending from Web Novel to Light Novel, the amateurish writing still bleeds through. Even if the various side stories are necessary to flesh out the world, reading them feels like the author has rather unique ideas to expound upon, but is unable to tell it in a coherent fashion. As if "chronology" is a dirty word. Sure the world gets more complex, characters gain more depth and the skill sheets get ridiculously long as the story goes on. But there comes a point, when none of that even matters, once all the mysteries are revealed. Though it certainly has some gorgeous illustrations in the: Light Novel Covers, Monster Encyclopaedias & Character Profiles. <<less

It may be one of the best novels I ever read, and not only because of the fresh point of view of an isekai story, but also for the cleverness of the main character, I mean, she is a "normal" girl but way she surpasses any obstacule (and there are no few) by means of logic, intelligence and effort. Besides, there is the fact of her funny internal monologues, all of these combined characterisitics simply make her an endearing character. Also, although at first hand it may seems like the... more>> co-protagonist story is kinda out of place and slows the main plot, everything makes sense once you read a little more, so give it a chance (this little issue was perfectly solve in the LN version, where the co-protagonist story was developed in a more interesting and concise way). I could write more and more about why this novel is pretty good from my point of view, but I decided to keep it short, anyway at the time you read it you'll make your own judgement ;) <<less

Average length is about 5 minutes building towards 7 around chapter 200+.

First chapters are often confusing but you get used to that way of writing after some time. Great premise and you wait toward each evolution. Everything is nice until chapters around 200+. Whole premise and type of novel changes and make it boring and honestly confusing. All pressure is gone and even after that I read addition 60 chapters until I gave up.

my advice... read with idea that what you are reading and liking will change after which you... more>> can stop reading. It won’t get better ;) <<less

This novel is pretty fantastic. Though I personally had some issues with reading it at the beginning anyone that can manage through the first dozen or so chapters is in for a major treat. The main character is likable and enjoyable while still having a fairly unique outlook if not a unique personality. There are legitimate twists in the story that surprised me without feeling random or out of place, after each one I felt that certain lines I had overlooked to be throwaway lines were proper hints.

For the record, I recommend you read the LN version of this novel.

The LN is super fleshed out by the author and is far superior to the WN.

LN is 4/5 and WN is 3.5/5.

I thought I was crazy at first. After all, Kumo desu Ga Nani Ka did have large amounts of 5 star reviews. Was I reading a different translation than everyone else? Was that why I thought this book was awful while others praised it? Apparently I wasn't! I was first introduced to this book when I read the comic version. Now looking at the text of the novel, it has come to my attention that Kumo Desu Ga Nani ka is merely one LONG monologue. While unnoticeable when reading a... more>> graphic version, this glaring flaw becomes apparent when one starts reading a book that is seemingly written by a blind man. There are no descriptions to be found and whenever a fight happens it's just the FL talking to herself for multiple paragraphs. I'm beginning to suspect that the novel is just the dialogue that the author has for the comics that haven't yet been drawn. While I still enjoy the comics, I do not think that this book deserves anything more than 1 star in any universe. <<less

a certain character has a crush on their half-sibling. If I had known about this I wouldn't have read it in the first place and no tags indicate it. Even if they turn out to not be blood related later, it's still my bottom line.

One of the better novels I read. If you are looking for an isekai (reborn/transportet into a fantasy world) story, I can recommend this one. I´m not really a fan of storys with a "game system" (skills, lvl, exp, a screen, etc...) but this one could hold my interest.

An introvert girl gets reborn as a spider in a fantasy world. She has to adapt to this very unusual and rather unique situation and does that quite good, after some panic in the beginning. After much fighting, eating and exploring (that... more>> goes on for quite a while, almost too long), the bigger plot starts to slowly unfold. You will have to put many small pieces together and maybe reread some parts to really understand whats going on.

Spoiler

After getting OP the MC tries to safe the world. Since almost nobody knows about the soon to come end of the world and the MC is really bad in explaining, the necessary harsh and brutal actions to safe the world are not really taken well.

[collapse]

Our MC is quite the hardcore introvert, with some serious communication problems. (yeah, there is a easy to understand reason for this) Many things could have gone much smoother if she would just explain things a little bit better, buuuuut that would make many things much less enyoyable.

The fights are plenty and still interesting.

The pace is rather slow.

Most negative critic from other reviews come from not paying enough attention to the story, or not reading further enough. <<less

IT'S BACK!!

Well, I really love this novel and specially the main character. She is so funny. She gives absolute zero sh*t to everything else, so some dramatic parts might seem silly when you are reading from her point of view that's why the side stories are important, they are the POVs of the different characters. The side stories might seem boring at first but they hold lots of mysteries and foreshadowing... but you don't need to read them, cause just reading the numbered chapters alone is mostly enough to get... more>> a grasp on the whole situation, cause it's the point of view of the main character and whatever she experiences from her perspective.... and she, at this point, knows everything that's going on in the whole world.

The main character is why I love this story so much, and this is the only bad thing about her, which I also kinda like about her:
Spoiler

The only bad thing about her personality is that she's bad at communicating with people so she almost never properly explains anything to the people around her, the other reincarnators and stuff... but that's just annoying, nothing more, cause if you think about it, nobody else at this point even matters right now, so her not explaining everything and leaving others dumbfounded, or telling them everything properly, or just killing them and being done with it, the end result would be the same, they are not even worth it to talk to and she never gave a f*ck about them either. But I just sometimes just wish others could know about their situation and her capabilities, because she knows everything they desperately wants to know and she can help them, she just doesn't.

Like, others are worried to death about something when actually everything is resolved and the main character is there who knows about it and is standing right there in front of them, she starts thinking of random stuff and having arguments with herself (which is actually one of the best parts of this novel) while a single word from her can put the rest of the people at ease. Unless she's asked, she wont talk, and if she's asked, she would spend 30 minutes getting her thoughts together, and then explain the whole situation, in her head, then ending it with a "... that's how it is" and that part at the end would be the only thing she actually voiced out. lol

Well, since I have seen many different opinions on the web novel, I can agree to all of them, in certain degrees. For once, people should not get told that it’s a super mega awesome story, since it starts slow and if you don’t get into the MC then this story is obviously not going to be for you. For the side stories I do understand some people think those are for skipping over, but hear me out, those WILL indeed play a major role in the future, so I... more>> suggest not to skip them over if you want the full experience. There are many people that are actually kind of mislead as obviously they haven’t finished reading the whole thing, so I understand why they think the story goes to a certain way or has certain events happening or want explanations (when they are not going to happen and they do explain everything at certain points). In the end this story focuses in the MC trying to survive, while we also get to know what is happening with the other reincarnated classmates. So, I suggest that if you’re into heavy plot driven stories and you aren’t interested in the MC from the get-go then this is NOT your type of story, it does get more plot driven later on, but it takes a long time until then, which is why you either have to be patient for or if you don’t have the patience nor the interest in the characters, then you won’t have a good time with the story. <<less

I would like to say first that I did really enjoy the premise of the protagonist being reborn into a spider. I found this from reading the manga, and I have to say I'm disappointed. I've realize what I loved from the manga comes from the artist's interpretation of this light novel.

It was simply hard for me to read because the text didn't really flow well and the side stories were hard to link with the main story of the protagonists. I could not be very attached to the other... more>> characters even if they were her classmates.

I normally read the light novels after sampling it a little by manga, but it truly feels that these two have different charms. I might give it a try again later, but I think reading 30 chapters in is a good indicator that I wouldn't enjoy the writing style. <<less

i started to read this because the manga is interesting but I thought that it would be more interesting when I read it. But I was disappointed on how the story flows. It feels like the feeling or the ego of the MC is not that strong and there is not much dept when it is about how the story is when something like there is an enemy that is so OP but suddenly defeated it like "what the heck?" in an instant and doesn't even describe much on how... more>> a character looks like or whatever, and etc. <<less
