The pessimistic and negative daughter of a concubine living in the ancient times thought – since life is so difficult, why should one invest serious effort in struggling to live?

The life of an ancient noble woman is often determined and controlled by her family. Moreover, one’s actions often implicate one’s entire family – thus, it is fairly common to see an unexpected calamity result in suffering borne by one’s whole family. Managing to live a good and successful life while retaining one’s dignity is simply too difficult to achieve.

Ah, living in the ancient times is simply too dangerous – we should all just sleep till we die.

I really like this! It's so refreshing change from the typical transmigration stories. For once, the MC is not OP. She fakes being illiterate (at the beginning), whereas in other c-novels, the MC would use her skills to her advantage.

Her host's mother was schemed against, but the MC's attitude was very objective. This seems more realistic - why would she feel like she needs to right all wrongs when it's not even her birth mother (as opposed to other C-novel MCs) ?

Even the "antagonists" - I don't really hate them.... more>> I understand why they are the way the are - since it's a male dominated society, the women are in the male's whims and needs to do whatever it takes to get the most out of him.

I can't even hate the father, because at least he is a bit unconventional - gives the concubines and descendants more fair treatment than what is typically done in society. <<less

Great novel. The pace develops so naturally and smoothly. And the characters are all well built. Minglan is a smart girl but not a bit OP. There are times when she has to give in. And like the translation also.

It’s a breath of fresh air from other transmigration novels because the characters are fleshed out well and there are a distinct lack of one dimensional villains. Even if you don’t like a character, you can sympathize with them and understand why they behave the way they do. Minglan’s a very calm and level headed protangonist as well. If a realistic, slice-of-life transmigration story is up your alley, check out this story!

I enjoyed this very much, MC is very realistic and the pacing is very nice. Other children are different and also have more depth than in other same styled light novels. I like how elder characters have so much depth in it, I had no idea they could be like this, even though they are old their way of talking to each other is like old friends meeting after awhile no need for all those politeness and straight to the point. Not many deaths in this and I don't hate... more>> MC's father who I usually do in these type of novels. A lot of stuff is still in the family/fu.

EDIT: I loved to read this before her marriage and after that I basically just dropped the novel, the interactions with MC's family before marriage was just so good. And after that interest just vanished and havent read at all. <<less

Not sure how to rate this. Like many said, the first part up untill the marriage was AMAZING, id rate it a solid 5, or 4. But after the marriage... yeah.. not so much

First of all, no matter how you feel about the MC, ML, shady things happening during historic times, the part after the marriage... was just boring, it wasn't interesting anymore, and the vibes completely changed.

Pre-marriage, Minglan was SO smart, and it was so interesting to see her endurance and forbearance in overcoming her obstacles. However, after marriage,... more>> she starts acting kind of silly with the ML, I mean she is still smart, but she is also super silly and childish when "flirting (?) " with the ML...

Ok, now on to the ML. Many people didnt who turned out to be the main ML. I actually eventually really liked him and even rooted for him to be the ML. The two other side MLs relationship and falling in love with Minglan seemed pretty shallow. With Minglan's interactions with the main ML, you could see that she could actually show her "true self" and how smart she is, so I actually really liked him as ML.

But like previously stated, their interactions pre-marriage were fun and showed how Minglan could show her clever side to him. But after mariage, she became SUPER silly with him and acted like a baby... And he all of a sudden was INFATUATED with her.. just boom, like that..

As some people have also pointed out, the s*x scenes... yeah I dont know.

If you read it through a historical lens... maybe it would be... "acceptable"? Since things in ancient histary were pretty shady, and women were indeed VERY limited and treated pretty poorly somtimes.

If you read it through a modern lens, it would be AT LEAST dubcon, or a gray area. Maybe not explicitly r*pe, but honestly in my opinion, I was pretty uncomfortable reading about it. I mean the guy has s*x with Minglan and she is literary in SEVERE pain, she keeps crying how much it hurts, and she is continuously crying.

I know in may romances, the overbearing type will be described with immense s*xual prowess and make their partner cry and "be bullied" and whatnot. I'm used to it, ive read the trope many times before.

However, here Minglan is literally continously crying, she is in pain. Its to the point where she cannot even walk the WHOLE DAY. She has dark circles under her eyes because she is in so much pain/so uncomfortable. Everyone around her notices thats she is waning. The ML even is described to notice that she is becoming dispirited (literally from the text). Yeah... thats not romantic... not even in the cringe overbearing trope type of way.

On top of that, its described that while Minglan is becoming dispirited, the ML is becoming more spirited, hes getting more and more refreshed, while Minglan is waning...

I'd say its dubcon when the other party is clearly SO uncomfortable. At the very least, it makes the ML seem VERY selfish to keep inflicting this on her when he even notices that her pain and fatigue makes her dispirited? Yet he keeps going? Like if you love your partner that much, wouldnt you care at all that she is in pain? that the s*x is literally draining her? Is it REALLY that hard to restrain just a tiny bit?

Then we find out the ML had a whole intricate plot in order to snatch a marriage with the MC. She is really angry, but he promises that if she marries him he guarantees nobody can wrong her, which is really all she wants in a marriage at that point.

BUT THEN, the whole intrigue with his family is WAY worse than everything she had to go through with her own family...

It was just so off putting reading the whole ordeal, the dubcon, the selfishness, the apparently awful s*x.. yeah def killed it for me. And I was even initially rooting for this ML. <<less

One of my fave slice-of-life/transmigration novel set on ancient times. The romance is slow as it's more focused on character growth. Very well written to the point of hard to put down.

(It was tagged 'complete' when I picked it up. Too bad that I realised it late that it was still incomplete, so I had to make do with MTL for the rest of the chapter.)

Currently reading again while waiting for the translation to finish - I still find this such a charming slice-of-life drama. Even when tangled into a transmigration storyline! Ming Lan and her family intertwine each other for both good and bad and I hope the final chapters will let her look back on her life with pride. Don't fuss about the romance - she ends up with a solid citizen as a husband. He's also known the pain of a broken heart and the despair of an abandoned child. They lean... more>> on each other and that is the best ending to a romance. <<less

It was a very enthralling story.

Spoiler

And here I am rooting for Qi Heng/Qing He.. (can't remember his name.. LOL), sad to say he's not her potential future-husband. Haha, the doctor is in the top contender right now, more like it's fix already.

Can't wait for the next stage... Married life and a new environment with new people to meet.

It's so rare that I'm completely charmed by a LN, but I really, really am right now. The MC is delightful and her 'past self' feels like a real person as well, with memories and her own personality. This is definitely on the softer side of reincarnation novels - it focuses heavily on everyday life, and isn't a revenge story. And that's absolutely it's strong point - I am so sick of the 'perfect' women who marry a prince and become empress and every single other woman around them is... more>> catty and awful and one-dimensional because they're just temporary roadblocks for the heroine to crush. (You know the ones.)

The MC is - currently - a young girl, so a lot of the interpersonal drama comes from the adults and some of her older siblings, but all the characters are believable and - greatest and rarest of all joys! - have a life outside of trying to ruin the MC's life or abusing her out of jealousy. Even Concubine Lin, probably the most typically scheming antagonist-type character of the cast, doesn't feel like a bored cliche and has reasons for her actions that don't spring from holding an idiot antagonist ball. Also, the MC's relationship with the grandmother is super cute.

The translating, on the other hand... it's not bad, it's just not phenomenal. (I rated it five stars rounding up from 4.5, because it doesn't impugn my reading too much, but it's worth noting.) The beginning in particular is really not very good, and even in the latest chapters there are some tenses and general flow issues. That being said, it's getting steadily better with each chapter, and kudos to the translators for the very detailed footnotes and summaries of the more opaque parts of the text. <<less

Honestly, this novel could be so amazing (for a non-chineese reader) if only the translations were good as well. Unfortunately, the first translations truly hurt the brain.

I usually never critise translations since I know the work behind it, however... This feels like some elaborate-google-translate. Most of the sentences don't mean a single thing, the tense is all wrong, words are missing, the structure of the sentence is messed up. It's as if it's been translated word per word from Chineese to English.

Edit : Alright, I don't have any eyes and... more>> didn't see that Rebirth have taken full charge of this novel and retranslating everything from the start. (A GOD !)

So, I'm actually putting full stars for this novel because it's truly good ! I was just pissed at the Low Translations at the start. <<less

Very good novel, it is not the typical one in which the protaginista accepts it as if it were something common and becomes the perfect young lady adapting everything to her convenience, instead she gets depressed and little by little she accepts it while she learns to live in her new environment. In addition the ability of the writer to present the personalities of the characters and the evolution of the story is to be admired: fluently and without feeling suffocated by the excess or lack of detail.

Beautifully written and translated. This novel follows ming lan's day to day life. It's slow paced but you enjoy every moment. There are alot of light cute fluffy awww moments and little laughs. I love how you can actually relate and like the majority of the characters. Most of all you can't help but cheer ming lan on:)

One-of-a-kind MC, cute interaction between characters, and well-streamed narratives. Legend of Concubine's Daughter Minglan, at least until c17 part2 which I've read, is a must-read if you are a fan of novels with female protagonist and Ancient Chinese family intrigue. Although the premises where a modern woman got transported to the body of a bullied daughter in old China is not new, but it has plenty refreshing aspects. I'm looking forward to all 220 chapters that seemed like around the right length for a well-constructed awesome story.

Actually it's really deserved 4, 6 bcs all the realistic way of thinking and without golden finger, I read it on another source (mtl+edited) until 354, but bcs they stop translated it I just go to mtleld for 355-376 but... idk if the mtled version was cut or it's genuine chapter but.. the story that I read for 355-376 is so rushed I can't even tell left and right, it's awful... that 4, 6 became 4.3 it really such a shame that this story doesn't have complete good translation yet,... more>> although the romance is so late.. almost became a sub-plot, but I can see that it not all black and white when it comes to love journey, our ML is idk.. how to say it.. I feel pity but when u thinking about what he has experience and how the society is u can't blame him, it's not so pure romance, its mix with many, and became sweet, I really hope they gonna complete the translation soon, bcs this novel is gem

This definitely have that moment of ''this feel like a ML but it's not'' I know an author who putvthe se stunt but they can't play it well but this.. hahahaha good play, deserved my tears, despite the feeling gloom aura from household fighting, mc's inner monologue that sometimes author put was really amusing, author also put ML POV and that's was a plus.. u may feel the way of ML fall in love is kinda simple but for me, I think this is just normal and logic way on ancient time.. u interest on someone bcs of their appearance u thought it just a fling but it know ur heart make u want to just spend ur time to old together.

Our MC also good, she not ur typical prodigal MC, just somewhat up to ordinary.. having an experience after became people who work on court, and author had a straight way to tell us about mc's feeling, and I also will said that char development is real <<less

The writer is obviously good as descriptions and plot points. HOWEVER, not once are those skills used in the actual main character! She didn’t even speak until the sixth chapter! I have read some slow stories but this was the most PAINFUL by far. I would rather read a textbook.

This is my new favorite novel. Fast paced, clever plot, no blatant dog blood plot.

I am so convinced now that to be a 'succesful' (depends on what counts as succesful is, in this case FL summarized it beautifully: have a good life), any protagonists need to have real life work experience, better if the experience was related to law. Then, they would be able to understand & retort with iron clad words & everything is just toeing the line, but never crosses it.

So interesting!

The choice of ML seems to get a bad rep from all the other reviews. But honestly, whoever the true ML would be was always kind of obviously not the first option.

Spoiler

He's not THAT bad. I get that yeah he has had 2 kids before but after hearing about his family past, the MC even sympathizes with the ML. My only gripe with him is his ridiculous libido and tendency to bruise MC during their s*xual escapades.... That's just a bad cliche.

[collapse]

Other than the ML, everyone is incredibly likable, even the "bad guys" are quite real. The author's done a good job of fleshing them out with distinct relateable goals. <<less

This novel deserves more atttention, shame it would be hard for most people to start reading.

Translation: The issue is that the first 10 chaps has reallly bad translation, borderline MT. It gets better quickly still... Some people might not be comfortable with switching websites, but it isnt that difficult here. For most of the translations afterwards, it would be rather rough because of the complicated relations and background, but still good overall.

Its a new experience for me, reading a historical novel that is very accurate to the ancient times. Its... more>> about as genuine as it gets, and the itch to find out what happens remains throughout reading. Applaud to the author:D Give it a shot, if you like heavy reading this should be for you.

Note: this is one of the few novels of its kind that has a proper translation, plenty of chapters and is guaranteed more or less to be completely translated soon. So go for it, the cliffhanger is part of the fun! <<less

I would recommend this novel to everyone because it is simply brilliant. However, I won't. If you are just like me and can't read Chinese it will be extremely frustrating to read it as the translation is not moving at all. And only 4 new chapters have been released since last year August.

Honestly, I am dropping this until someone else picks up this gem.
