Hasami Tatsuro and Yashiki Ai, two ordinary teenagers, experienced an earthquake while on the way home from school.

The earthquake cracked space and transported the two to another world.

Landing in an unknown forest, the two initially began to grieve. However, unbeknownst to them, a system had installed itself into their bodies, granting them the ability to gain skills and statuses.

Hasami Tatsuro obtained the “Level Eater” skill. “Level Eater” allowed the host to devour others’ levels/skills and make it his own.

Yashiki Ai obtained the “Valkyrie” skill. “Valkyrie” allowed the host to obtain and use any offensive skills from different classes, without the need to specialize.

With their cheat skills and teamwork, they managed to venture out of the forest and explore the new world.

This is a story of two ordinary kids.

It's fine. I'd give it a 3.5. The couple is cute though their relationship feels superficial so far. I hope the story shares more of why they like each other / got together. Unless they're just supposed to feel like a random high school relationship and not a OTP; if that's the case, then it's spot on.

The end of the first arc was fairly interesting though I already find my mind wandering a few chapters into the second (just like most of the first arc). Feels pretty aimless and their... more>> romance is not enough to hold attention.

It is probably the power-gamer in me that finds their status as adventurers extra frustrating. They do some reading and meditating to try to get stronger but they don't seem too terribly interested in leveling up even though the female main lead Ai levels up absurdly easily while the male main lead Tatsuro (?) can use his level eater skill to level up anything he wants fairly easily. <<less

So, the writing itself is pretty good.

The setting is actually REALLY interesting, It's like a half sci-fi half fantasy world, and there's a lot of random details here and there about the ecology and whatnot that make it seem quite interesting.

The romance is genuinely good.

... more>> However.... the main characters are... unbelievably dumb. Constantly.

Some other reviews have covered some of the early aspects of this (like maxing fire magic first...) but seriously, it just doesn't stop.

So, first off, let's start with their initial primary goal. "Return to Japan" - Ok, w/e. Personally I always find this a really dumb goal for Isekai characters, to want to basically give up their ridiculously OP cheat abilities just to go back to the modern world and live a normal life, but, w/e. But the important thing is to establish the fact that this is their goal.

So, what do they need in order to return to Japan? SP in order to learn skills. How do they get SP? By using Male MC's cheat ability to drain skill levels from others. So, what do they decide to do?... Not use it on each other, despite the fact they could realistically use this to return to Japan the very same day they got there because FMC's cheat ability allows her to gain skill levels by just punching the air. Ok, sure, w/e, you're worried there might be long-lasting effects. Sure.

But then... every encounter, stuff is left on enemies for literally no reason.

Spoiler

Fighting random low level enemies that pose zero threat? Kill half of them before using Level Eater.

Fighting a boss-type dragon that can re-learn skills mid-combat? Only use Level Eater once instead of farming said dragon for infinite SP (which also would've made the fight easier...).

Attacked by a group of bandits in the middle of the night? Scare them off instead of capturing them and draining their levels.

Entire goal is to earn SP? Yeah, y'know, instead of staying in the town where we know everyone and know that there's nothing that's a threat to us nearby and just farming SP like that, let's instead go randomly journey across the world.

[collapse]

It's just one thing after another.

If it wasn't for the genuinely good romance aspects, this would definitely only be a 3/5.

The complete lack of logic and intelligence from the 2 main characters is just... beyond frustrating.

Also the power scaling is pretty much confirmed to be completely and utterly arbitrary and pointless within the first day they're in town, as within 4 days of being in this world they've apparently done something that was "only done once in history", which is ridiculously fast even for the OP MC Isekai genre... especially considering they're seemingly supposed to be "getting stronger over time", but are already literally like top 10 globally within a single week. Like.... huh.

It's a good story that's dragged down by the main cast's utter lack of brain cells. (... and arguably some/most of the side cast, too.)

This is nowhere near the worst thing I've read, but it's also nowhere near the best. Which is a shame because I actually REALLY like the world building so far. It's much more unique compared to your typical fantasy world Isekais. <<less

This novel is great with a power couple and theres no relationship drama or any harem whatsoever, just MC and his waifu, romance starts early, MC isnt dense, they get physical, they get op. only downside personally was their motivation to get stronger was to go back to japan and finish school and live a normal life when they basically strong enough to be magic and martial gods, I simply dont get it. I get going back to earth to see your family or visit but going back so you can finish 2 years of highschool? Then work a 9 to 5? MC has enough magic to fight dragons and create new life and thats what you wanna do?
Spoiler

of course their motivation changes to saving planet earth eventually but their initial goal s**ked imo

When I read a JP novel, I want two things:

  1. The MC is not a beta (beta = scared of girl cooties, self hatred, cowardice and/or suffers from JP moral deficiency that falsely equates killing and mu*der)
  2. The plot is at least good enough to kill time with.
High standards for a JP isekai, I know, but this novel does deliver at least that.

Premise

The novel starts off when Tatsuro and his long-time girlfriend, Ai, is transported to a different world. Of course, they want to get back to Japan. So far nothing... more>> special. Wanting to go back to Japan has been done before (see e.g. Arifureta). Mildly interesting is that it's a couple that get's transported. It's usually a truck-kun casualty or an entire class gets transported.

What to expect

It's non-harem isekai. Typical of isekai, there are a lot of RPG elements, including levels, stats, etc. Up to this point it's mostly drama and slice-of life with some romance fluff and battles. Sometimes-funny jokes is usually mixed. In the first two arcs, it's exclusively monster battles. In the third arc, some plotting is revealed and there are some human antagonists. I expect that to continue. The pacing can be a bit slow at times, but that's a matter of taste. As far as I can tell, there isn't any plot holes. Don't expect the author to win the Nobel laureate for literature anytime soon, but as light reading it's not unsatisfying.

Characters

In general the two MCs are well rounded. Tatsuro is definitely the brains of the outfit while Ai can be a bit air-headed with the occasional flash of brilliance. Neither of them are betas. You're not going to find Tatsuro's nose exploding or running away to the next country at incredible speed when Ai proposes something naughty. Ai supports Tatsuro and he consults with her as any good couple should. Neither wants to kill people, but will if necessary. That's honestly refreshing when comparing with most JP novels - especially isekai.

Spoiler

After Tatsuro kills a bunch of bandits, Ai insists that they kill the leader together, which they do.

[collapse]

The side characters is a bit flat, which is understandable since the interactions with them are limited. You get the feeling that they could be better developed if reintroduced.

Translation

Translation by Nocturne is excellent while that by Soafp is sub par to say the least. Note that both seems to have dropped the novel. I'm currently reading the raws.

Recommends

If, like me, you want JP fantasy with a non-beta MC, I'll give a few "turned into anime" that I liked:

  • Arifureta - Naugumo Hajime (Isekai/Harem). MC is pretty ruthless. the characters are good.
  • Mushoku Tensei - Rudeus Greyrat (Isekai/Harem). A classic. More plot than anything else.
  • Black Summoner - Kelvin Celsius (Isekai/Harem). Battle junkie. Some things I don't like, but overall OK.
  • The world's greatest assassin... - Lugh Tuathan-de/John Smith (Isekai/Harem). Ruthless MC, but he cares for the girls.
  • Banished from the hero's party - Gideon/Red (Fantasy/Romance). Mostly drama/fluff/slice-of-life. Real imouto wants to turn it into a harem though :-)
  • Konosuba - Kazuma Satou (Isekai/Comedy/Harem). Note the guy doesn't actually get anywhere with his "harem" and to be fair he really only goes after one 14 yo girl, so no wonder.
  • Redo of Healer - Keyaru/Keyaruga (Fantasy/Harem). Not for everyone. The MC is a literally insane rapist with brainwashing power.
There are some more, but I'll stop here. Thanks for reading. <<less

I admit I'm biased due to how much I like the couple here. It's a bit sappy iirc and they act their age at times. But it's so nice to find a JP story that tries to treat romance seriously. The story itself is a bit above average for your standard isekai. There's nothing ground breaking here, but I don't have much to nitpick about either.

This series actually reminds me of another early couple story that ended a while back. The name eludes me, but here's hoping that this... more>> series keeps getting translated. Wish there were more series like this.

Found it - Isekai ni Kita Boku wa Kiyoubinbode Subaya-sa Tayorina Tabi o Suru

Oh, and I saw one review complaining that they didn't have a goal? They don't bring it up all the time but they clearly had one from early on in the story. It might be pretty common as motivations go for this kind of story but it works.

What a 'nice' romance. ;) <<less

This one is ok. It includes good slice of life-vibes in the way it shows the way the MCs live when there's no action.

A lot of chapters have disappeared, so you occasionally need to go to the source and self translate.

The naivety of the MCs shines through nicely. When the ML finally goes ballistic in the c90s it gets pretty decent for a short time, which makes for a good counter, but it ultimately fails because they don't really learn or mature from the experience and the momentum it isn't... more>> sustained.

Reasonably good descriptions. I like that there are a LOT of bad strategic decisions made by the ML who consistently over-estimates how smart he is and under-estimates his companion's capabilities... which limits the FLs growth by being overprotective and the negative consequences are pretty well depicted (and I like that the author depicts these consequences).

Best of all, it's not a harem and the romantic (sub) plot, while occasionally a bit overbearing, is pretty well incorporated and not forced.

My biggest complaints are 1) the villain monologuing is just irritating and awful, and 2) the inconsistency of how the magic system is applied - especially the inconsistent power levels and 3) the plot-damaging good-guy/hero mentality of the MCs to the point of significant self-damage. Together they're pretty major detractors. <<less

After reading 18 chapters, I can tell you the MC is not very bright, he maxes fire magic when in the forest and uses it instead of maxing earth magic, he can’t use earth magic without gathering stones, they are fighting bears, instead of taking the levels completely, he takes the levels of few of their skills and leaves other skills and their levels in tact, he maxes fire magic to the peak of the world which is LV10 and yet he still can’t one shot a bear? Honestly the... more>> girl is a better MC for me, also what is stopping his from creating a sphere of water and using it to drown the bear? Omfg man, I quit <<less

the prologue was discouraging since there already a couple. Now that the pairing is settled I thought it focused on another approach. But its kinda dull as an isekai it has no goal or reason for the both of them to keep going might say the MC is doing it to protect his girl and get stronger but is that all? What about the girl shes also a MC says both of them are Protagonist. It tries to be fluffy but the way its written is disgustingly weird. The way... more>> that the story is handles surprising good but the Plot (was there even a plot). Lets say it just lack the motive or excitement to keep on reading it just lacks plot. Its a good story if you dont have anything else to read. <<less

Amazing power couple story.

They are a true power couple not just in name, the are already together from the start and face everything together and get stronger and strategize and the power system is great too.

Male lead and Female lead are great and cover for eachother's weaknesses and strengthen eachother, and their chemistry and level up strategy carry this story.

It's more of a dual lead story but it's more often from his POV so you can say it's male MC. If you like a competent, supportive actually useful female lead... more>> and a confident male lead and domt want to read about awkward misunderstanding nonsense and insecurity read this. <<less

This seems like a really good isekai for once. Not too many cliches. The author has a good imagination for new monsters, and the fighting is interesting. The MC isn't dense, there's no harem.

However, the author decided he's gonna make his characters the type that absolutely wont kill a human being. When he tried to write himself out of the hole he'd put himself into it was pretty bad. It seems to me that Japanese authors write their protagonists either as way too disgustingly nice. Or to be completely psychotic.... more>> There's not many in betweens. These two are the disgustingly nice. <<less
