“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

Good SF novel but...

The novel is good because it has so many contrasts and controversial dilemmas of the very humanity. If one reads carefully, one has to look into the mirror and interrogates oneself severely of one's humanity.

To live longer, human need indisciminated killing. To continue being human, humanity need killing lots of another human and being. By keep on extensively killing and demolishing, humanity keeps on walking the path toward extinction.

... more>> We know, they know, all know. No one stops.

Why 4/5 stars. Because the SF elements in the story are very absurd and nonsense to the very degree of para-science. Take the car for example. Fuel can NOT be growth unlimitly from the plant. You need the chain of large scale factories. The electricity too. Once the world collapse, crude oil could not be mined, transported over half a world, fractional distilled, redistributed and stored. Not only it needs high tech science and technology but hundreds of thousands of blue collar workers worldwide too.

But this novel has cars, jet fighters, mobile phone, internet, etc which work normally and perfectly despite only a handfull of people left.

For me, the novel should not title as Silver Award SF but good BL novel with some para-science background.

SF is 2/5 star, BL is 5/5. <<less

Peak.

I reread it fully only a few days after my first read. First time I do something like that.

Here the main things I loved :

... more>> - Great Pacing. Doesn't drag on, stay consistent. Keeps you hooked.

- Easy to read writing. It felt simple to understand yet not lacking.

- Adorable yet mentally strong MC. Helps me cope with all this doom and tension.

- Compelling detailed world building.

- Satisfying ending.

End of main review.

___________________________

More details on MC because when I love something I want to yap :

1- Lack of humanity.

It sound bad but it isn't, he's not human so he can stay calm and helps us cope with all this doom and gore, his outsider view of humanity makes following his POV so interesting too.

2- Empathy/kindness.

Now that's what makes him likeable despite not being human, he's not cold, if he can prevent a death he will, he can feel sadness for another species suffering like humans.

3 - Adorable

He's earnest and tries his best but also confused at a lot of human things. His lack of common sense is cute/hilarous. And it makes so much sense with his identity it's satisfying.... Maybe this should be a subcategory for lack of humanity, well everything ties in that's proof of a well built character.

About the romance, I liked it.

I'm the kind of reader who's here for the plot and the MC, so I don't feel suited to review it. It's a nice plus and help me dispel some of the tension, it felt nice and sweet. <<less

I’ve never been a fan of sci-fi, except when I was little I had a massive obsession with the stars. This book made me realize how hard physics are but also how interesting they are.

Honestly, the book kept me on edge the whole time. I didn’t have any hope until the very finale.

I’m gonna be frank, I don’t cry much but I cried every single chapter from the middle of the second (officially translated) book. I felt despair, I laughed and I loved along with the characters.

Truly a masterpiece. Now... more>> I have left only the epilogue to read and I can’t wait enough to get back home and binge it even if it means I don’t get enough sleep. <<less

I really... Wanted to love it, okay? I wanted to. But something just felt wrong and I couldn't put my finger on it, until now.

I love both MC and ML individually as characters. Both are deep layered characters with ambitions and unique personality traits and thoughts and so on. I also loved their interactions and adored them together until about 3/4 in, where it's revealed that ... more>>
Spoiler

ML injected a tracker in MC. I audibly recoiled when I read that. He couldn't have betrayed MC any more, and yet MC still forgave him.. I felt like ML put his code and the base before MC every. Single. Time. And then he's basically idolized for "not killing MC". I feel like it's the least he could've done, considering he KNOWS MC is super kind and gentle.

[collapse]

The plot was amazing. It had me on the edge of my seat, and I swear I saw NO hope for a happy ending until the VERY last moment when everything took a sharp 180. I thought you guys were coping or trolling me lol. Also, I'm not a big fan of sci-fi (I tolerate it) but I actually really enjoyed this one!

The side characters were pretty bland. Sorry, didn't really like much of 'em (not to mention most of them die before you can get attached, or end up being pretty bland/one dimensional).

Oh, also, I got desensitized to the mass mu*der at... Oh, I don't know, the third mass shooting and second nuclear bomb on civilians. Yeah this novel killed off LOTS of people and often, so often, that I stopped being surprised when another 1-2k people died in a chapter.

Lastly, MC and ML's relationship was a bit strange... Especially at the end..? Some people found torturing MC's spore disgusting, but I actually found one of the extras a bit disturbing. MC and ML go to explore the abyss and MC complains about being in pain (presumably because ML was rough with him during.. sex? Making out?). MC complains that ML won't stop even if he cries and pleads. ML turns a blind ear to him and initiates another make out. Not to mention every other time ML more or less forces himself on MC when MC is angry ❤️😊 why. Pushing MC down when he was upset about the spore's mistreatment. Trapping MC in his arms when he was upset about ML's bone crushing betrayal (even I was betrayed, I couldn't believe my eyes). It goes on, I don't like his forcefulness with our kind, soft, gentle and pure MC... : (

I was low-key hoping there wouldn't be any romance because the MC is repeatedly described with child-like qualities: pure, innocent, doesn't get bad intentions, doesn't really know about s*x, he's just very soft and pure to the point where I felt ML's forceful kisses were dirtying him lol.

I have qualms with the GN too. By all means, this novel PROMISED ME a bad end. The entire time, the doomed atmosphere, humanity fighting for just one more day, the hopelessness you could practically taste radiating off each moment.... You're telling me this was all solved just like that? Huh? The author forced a GN on this one, by all means it didn't make sense for it to end well...

It was also to the end never explained why ML sticks to his codex (the interests of humanity take precedent over all else) so much, or why he joined the trial court, or why MC was so attached to his spore (speaking of, I love goal oriented MCs even if the goal doesn't make sense, as long as they want it bad. Now tell me why MC got a taste of empathy for ML's sad backstory and all of a sudden he leaves his OWN ambitions, that he's been chasing since the beginning, and let's the base have his spore?! The spore we chased... Across the continent???? The same spore we had every major conflict over? Just like that? Okay. Okay.) The side pairings also felt forced 😊 I did literally not need to know about Hubbard and Tang Lan. It would've been the same story without them.

Lastly. I felt that luck played too big a factor in the ending, as well as throughout the novel. I'm not fond of this type of novel where the author overuses coincidences to make the GN possible. I'm telling you, how is this even a GN... (Baffled)

We didn't even find An Ze's cave. I really wanted to see An Ze again but alas.

Perhaps I'm being too harsh though. The writing style is good and so is the translation, and plot. It's hard to even find that much these days, in the copy-paste bl novels. I was surprised and delighted to find this one was very unique and the plot was very original and enjoyable. Unfortunately the ending fell very, very flat for me, and a lot of the things promised earlier on (relationship between ML/MC, end of the world, the explanation for the distortions, the spore's maturity...) were not well delivered, or disappointed me.

All in all a decent read! I wouldn't exactly recommend it, maybe my expectations were too high because of the excessive hype.... <<less

Five Star!!

Recommended!

The plot never drags, always engaging and well the world is ending, literally. It's dawn of evolution and human race is forced to evolve but they resist and refuse. Humans refuse to go gentle into that good night. Humans insist to stay the same and to keep their DNA pure. They were mislead to think that to be human is to keep their DNA pure and maintain their body non infected by other creatures. Because their science tells them that once their DNA is infected, they will lose their... more>> oncsciousness and logical thought and succumbed to the instinct of the infecting creature.

But is that what humanity means? Is that what being human means? Because Human's science is failing. The universe changes the law of science and forcing the earth to follow the new rules. The planet, animals and plants who doesn't have higher thinking follows. Only humans resist and they pay the consequences for their arrogance.

An Zhe is a mushroom but he is also a human. He learns about humanity from the many humans he interacts with and tries to live as a human with humanity value. He never wants to harm any humans. All he want is just to take back his spore and raise it into maturity. That's all. Whatever happens to the humans is not his concern but he will try to help anyone if he could. <<less

Little Mushroom: Judgment Day

Little Mushroom: Judgment Day is set in a post apocalyptic dystopian world in the year 2020, when Earth's magnetic poles vanished, and cosmic radiation nearly eradicated humankind. Over the next century, creatures mutated and preyed upon each other, while the remaining humans clung to their man-made shelters. In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze (blood contamination), it assumed a similar human form and a name: An Zhe.

Due to... more>> unknown human who harvested his spore (protecting its spore is a mushroom's sole purpose in life), An Zhe is now determined to retrieve it so he ventures to the human base. Left and right - people are dying and/or getting infected. An Zhe is faced with constant peril as he needs to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges (tasked with identifying and eliminating Xenogenics) and find his stolen spore. Amon the Judges, there is Colonel Lu Feng - the most astute and merciless executioner. Yet An Zhe's mutation eluded Lu Feng's scrutiny, setting the stage for a gripping tale of humans and Xenogenics..

The cover (look up both books) may fool you with its cutie patootie illustration as the story is nothing but pain.

Cover: 🥰✨😇 / Inside: ☠️🩸💀

I haven't read anything like this before. The world-building and writing is amazing! Even though I'm not a science person, I couldn't put this novel down. An Zhe is such a lovely, adorable, soft yet in his own way strong and determined character. He doesn't truly grasp human emotions, motives and unwavering drive to survive. He's basically a spectator. Yet, throughout his journey he unexpectedly forms attachments towards some humans. Especially towards our ML - Lu Feng. His burden as Colonel, is anything but light. His predecessors, worn down by the weight of their responsibilities, succumbed to madness or worse. Yet he persists. Tirelessly safeguarding humanity.. But once he meets An Zhe, things start to change. Perception shifts.. (Also, he likes to tease An Zhe hehe).

Ugh, this is very dark yet angsty and cute ✨balance✨

p.s. Now I understand why this work was nominated for the Chinese Nebula Awards ^_^

I see why it's so popular. The worldbuilding and plot are more important than the romance, but the MC and ML have plenty of satisfying interactions throughout the novel. It's fascinating watching humanity's struggle to survive in a well-written dystopian world, as well as the growth of the MC as he observes human behavior and develops new emotions. I really like how science is incorporated into the novel; it's interesting if you understand but doesn't hinder the experience if you don't. Angsty at times, but HE. This story will hold... more>> a special place in my heart and I'll definitely follow along with the manhua adaptation until its completion <3 <<less

Honestly this is one of my favourite novels and I had just randomly read it over the weekend last year because it's pretty short as well just under 100 chapters.

The world building is done in a way that keeps the readers interested and I think how its written from An Zhe's perspective is really well done in showing how he sees and understands things differently than humans do as he's originally a simple organism and how he tries to explain this to Lu Feng later.

Their romance is really cute as... more>> well and really supportive and there really is no downside to this novel. (I mean unless you don't really like the sort of apocalypse sci-fi setting that it's set in.) Really the only part that could be is near the end

Honestly one of my favourites I've ever read, I would read millions like this if I could.

The story is wonderful, and the world building is amazing. One of the few stories that made me literally wish for the best for the MC & ML in every way possible. It was so nice.

I love how the story doesn't feel like the same emotion 24/7 is being overlayed onto each scene; it feels ridiculous, sorrowful, stressed, bold, joyful, longingly wishing for something lost.. And so much more. It isn't blended together.

I enjoyed... more>> the MC a lot, I wasn't certain about the ML for a while tbh but it was all a pleasant surprise in every passage I read <3 <<less

I want to wipe my memory so I can read this book and experience it all over again :’)

LM was my my first sci-fi/apocalypse danmei and I also haven’t read this genre in a loooong while so I wasn’t sure if I was going to love the setting. But oh mY GOD IT WAS SO GOOD!! The plot, the world building, the characters were phenomenal and I loved every page I read. There are many moments which kept me turn page after page and mess up my sleep schedule,... more>> but it was so worth it!

I also loved the CP and their dynamic. It’s like, they’re supposed to be enemies-turned-lovers, but deep down they had a strong connection since the first moment. Their love is not OUT THERE but instead it’s slow and gentle and soul-bindingly strong <3

Also An Zhe is so precious, I wanna put him in my pocket and keep him safe from everything uwu <<less

-My review is based on the published edition-

God this is such a good book. The best way I can describe it is Nausicaa crossed with Fallout in the best way. The pacing is really great too and is one of my favorite parts. The author really balances cute wholesome fluff with the darker high stress moments which both end up making the other seem more impactful.

100/10 please read if you're on the fence you won't regret it

There are so many things I like about this story. The world building and this post apocalyptic setting is done so well you can almost visualize it. All the characters are interesting. The main characters have a true connection that builds slowly through a solid story that is about a lot more than just romance.

I came across this book on social media after having red other BL romance novels. I had a hard time wrapping my mind around a romance story about a mushroom. Boy was I wrong this is... more>> so much more than a romance story.

This is a slow burn romance that happens along with so many other things. Throughout most of the story there is romantic tension and a reluctance from both main characters to admit they are in love with each other. It is not until the very end of a main story that they both realize this.. It is in the epilogue that you see actual romance happening between them... And it's beautiful and worth the wait there's such a deep connection between these two. This is one of the things that makes this story so interesting you just wanna keep reading to see if it actually happens.

There is a happy ending although it's hard to understand until you're reading it where it's gonna happen... I started to get a little nervous thinking maybe I missed a tragedy tag BUT read on confidently you will find the story as a whole extremely satisfying and polished.

I thought it was also very interesting that in this post apocalyptic setting where humans are losing their humanity where even the mighty arbiter is in the brink of madness that this little mushroom develops a firm understanding of what it means to be human and in the journey he finds the humanity that even the arbiter thought he had lost. I will miss these characters... I don't know if I would ever reread the entire story but there are certainly chapters I would re-read.

Digital volume 1 is available on kindle - volume 2 is available directly from the publisher. <<less

Before reading Little Mushroom I’ve all the reviews here and I was actually afraid because I thought it’s gonna be a sad story. But it isn’t that sad actually.

The MC is such a cute little coquette (according to ML) and their love is something I earn for. Their understanding. Especially the MC when he tries his best to understand and never for once he make me feel that he is unreasonable like other MC
