“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

Pros :

This feels like a fever dream. The contrast between MC and ML is bluffing. I don't need to be critical and just enjoy the fluff.

MC is a mushroom and got a body, his spore got lost to a human base so he went there. MC is silly and literally an alien. I can't get serious with MC.

ML is a military guy, got some sixth sense and doesn't hesitate to kill. ML easily knows who is an alien and who's not. He knows MC is different from a normal human... more>> but not so sure.

The world building is good. The ML past and his mom's past. The other infected human past. It wrapped up nicely.

Cons :

The story got confusing and I'm too lazy to use some juice brain. <<less

Wow what an unexpected little gem this story was. The synopsis doesn't do it justice at all.

The story reminded me of another plant based story that I loved, Lessons on Raising a Partner, however the storyline and character development is unique.

This story of a brave little mushroom 🍄 striking out on an adventure to find his missing spore turns into an ill fated lovers battling against time to save humanity story rather quickly.

Spoiler

Fortunately unlike most ill fated lovers these two find a way to be together in the end, but not before some grevious heartaches.

[collapse]

The story line is probably more intense than you are imagning from the synopsis given of the story, it really is an end of the world, end of humanity kind of story. Luckily there is an extremely innocent and sweet mushroom there to guide you through all the ups and downs.

Even knowing what I know, I couldn't help but get a little emotional at the climax of the story, even though the MC and ML aren't overly expressive or loving, you can feel the care they have for eachother throughout the story.

I'm so glad I chanced upon this little story, and even more glad I got to know this little mushroom. I hope you decide to give it a try too!

Spoiler

Side Note: There is no NSFW in this story, a couple kisses, nothing descriptive, the implications of more are there, but just barely. Good or bad, you can decide.

Wow! Little Mushroom is much more than it appear to be, it's incredible, the story is so well written and the ups and downs drove me crazy, I cried really hard on the first chapter and at the end I was in a deeply despair, but everything is alright. Anyway, it's worth your time, give it a chance and I swear you won't regret it.

All I can say was this novel completely exceeded my expectations (which were admittedly quite low).

I didn't expect to like this nearly as much as I did, it really came out of left field.

It can be cheesy and corny and cliche at times, but I enjoyed the entire ride.

a very, very good danmei with soft and must-be-protected-at-all-cost MC and superb world building.

what I like:

    • it's an adventure-type of story. AZ went out to search for his spore, and along the way, learned about the world for the first time.
    • the world building!!!!! It's sick how the author managed to create an intricate stories about these imaginary fungus and monsters and their ecosystem and the science behind it. Also love the description of the civilization and the system that was implemented in it due to the outside environment.
    • the main character is such a soft babie. Don't bully AZ - he's just a little mushroom!!!!!
    • how FL was a kindhearted but misunderstood person and at first was avoided by everyone due to his position, and then he met the AZ and finally, he's not alone!!!!! He has someone who understand him!!!!!
what I don't like:

    • tbh the characters are pretty flat. They're not really that interesting pretty forgettable lol.
    • how the AZ and FL suddenly had this ~special~ connection between them even tho at first they'd only met for a couple of times????? Especially because they'd only exchanged a couple of words between them lol. Prolly because they had suspicion of each other, that was why they took notes of each other. But I don't think that warrants them to care about each other and want to help them and all that.

Overall Thoughts/Feelings:

  • Aahh its over. It was beautiful, truly one of the best books I've read in awhile. This might be hovering near the title of the best danmei I've read since MDSZ. The last few extras were so soft and precious, my heart slowly recovering from this sob-wracking story of a little mushroom on a mission to bring back his spore.
  • Only danmei books like this can make me suffer and cry like nothing before.
  • Every scene between LF and AZ was literally the cutest things ever.
  • There are really melancholy undertones to the book, and at time it can can get super heart-wrecking, especially with people dying left and right. My heart feels heavy.
  • The emotional rollercoaster this takes you on is unreal. Seriously everything is wonderful and adorable and the next the sky is exploding. Can they please catch a break? HUH
  • The synopsis is so vague and honestly sounded too weird for me to bother reading, but HOLY SMOKES am I so glad I did. Considering I've been neglecting my sleep and instead reading for 8 hours straight and could not stop for the life of me.
  • This is extraordinary, absolutely thrilling. The writing and descriptions had me gripped from the beginning.
  • interestingly, there is quite some physics in this, which was a great touch, if you're smart enough to understand jacksh*t about frequencies and magnetic fields.
  • Its about the human desire to continue living, however helpless and hopeless everything is. The fear of realizing some things are out of our understanding and we really can't do anything about it, except stubbornly refuse to give up.
Characters:

An Zhe: AHHH I LOVE HIMM. He's so soft and delicate and I just want to wrap him up in the fluffiest blanket, and hug him tight. His innocent and curious outlook towards things of the human world was so endearing, and him accepting and enduring with the... more>> cruel things happening in the human world, him learning to become a "better" human, all for his little spore. UGH SO CUTE. He's been human for barely a month, struggling to understand their thoughts and emotions, with his limited knowledge of this complex world. In this world he meets the Judge, who almost kills him at first sight, and as the story progresses, they repeatedly meet at different circumstances, unexpectedly forming a bond of sorts that An Zhe doesn't really understand. All he knows is that Lu Feng is a good person. Together, they face this messed up world, and hopefully for the rest of their lives as well.

Lu Feng: the Judge, the Colonel, the supposed Bad Guy. He goes around shooting people (who are rightfully infected), and your first impression of him isn't really the best but then you realize JUST HOW MUCH YOU LOVE HIM. Him constantly teasing AZ was perfection and the light in all the darkness that was this book. He distances himself from everyone, hiding behind a mask of indifference, unfeeling to the death and suffering surrounding him. We have no idea what's going on inside his head, whether he feels anything, and whether he'll ever go mad from all the lives he's taken. However, as An Zhe gets closer to him, we realize how selfless he is, constantly sacrificing himself for the sake of humanity, never scared of facing death. And soon he comes to care for this little heterogenous, something impossible for a judge, tasked with ridding the human world of anything that isn't human. But like An Zhe said, he really is a good person.

World-building:

It's basically post-apocalypse. Mutated insects, infected humans (and a very specific conscientious walking mushroom). They're growing embryos to maintain the population, there stuck behind huge walls from the terrifying creatures of the wild Abyss. Seriously reading about them was frightening, real goose-bump raising material.

Read if you like pain, a whole sh*t bucket load of angst that hits you out of nowhere, and having your heart broken apart and messily fixed again. <<less

This was sitting on my reading list for quite a long time but because of the reviews posted here on NU, I finally decided to read it.

It took me two days to finish this and what to say? It was amazing! Personally, I think that the most amazing this about this isn't the plot nor the worldbuilding. It was the characters. The characters held so much emotion and depth and partner it up with their firm ideologies = *chef's kiss*.

Sure, it's angsty (don't let the synopsis fool you), but it's... more>> worth it! Totally recommend!! :D <<less

Thought I was going to read a non-sense, lighthearted BL, but I ended up with the feels and debating philosophy and all.

Short review, since others have already discussed the major points and spoilers. I was debating whether to call this a tragedy,

but I decided it isn’t because things get better.

Not just for ML/MC, but for the world. I hope others will give this a read. It’s a really unique novel.

This novel is bomb af. I really thought is would be fluffy and cute given the summary but that isn't remotely close to what it actually is all about.

I really really loved how things played out and although I was messed up due to the rollercoaster of emotions and feels, it was all worth it. I appreciate how things followed a logical path, and that the plot didn't become a backdrop for romance because I've seen those in other novels.

I love MC for his character, how he slowly understood what... more>> being 'human' represented and how he understood ML. On the other hand, I love how ML remains true to his faith. But most of all, I loved how the Trial Court at the end was dissolved in order for there to be a happy ending so ML won't be shackled by his faith. I doubt there'll really be a happy ending if that happened. <<less

Let me start off by saying that this is my first review and I specifically created this account just to leave a review.

I've been hooked on these Chinese novels for well over a decade since I was a teenager. Of the hundreds I've read, this has got to be one of the best written Chinese novels I've ever come across.

Not only is this ML fleshed out, his struggles and decisions all throughout is steadfast to his character. From start to end (sans epilogue) he is ruthless.

The way the author wrote... more>> the world was amazing, the 'science' had actual effort placed into it. And I know all of you understand what I mean by crap explanations ruining the story. The fact that this apocalyptic world feels more real and grounded than most novels says a heck of a lot.

As an avid reader I have different standards when it comes to webnovels and light novels. Quality isn't always the best but the stories and face-slapping are fun so I don't mind if the world-building, translations or characters are shoddy. But this one is chefs kiss, and they actually use chekov's gun.

Spoiler

My one issue would be the fact that the city/place our MC is in will always go out in smoke. I've come to expect it after the second time it happened. But I understand that no place is safe and the plot points that lead to bombings made a lot of sense. And it's always due to a different issue each time which lessens the predictability of it.

[collapse]

Despite what everyone says, this is fluffy as heck to me. The darker the story progresses the lighter the feelings I get between each interaction of the ML/MC. And the fact that it's very gradual made me hope this story could get a live-action series. <<less

I loved this book so much. I really like stories about the differences between humans and other species, what makes us humans etc...

The universe was really interesting and well described. It was quite easy to understand everything that happened that lead to the current situation.

I really liked both main characters and understanding what they thought about this whole situation.

Overall, read if you enjoy reading books that have an impact on you and make you think, and when the universe is well developed.

There were so many moments where I wondered if this really was an HE because I was crying my eyes out half the time.

Incredible story, I find it hard to put into words how much I liked the story. Amazing plot, great characters, everything was put together so nicely like perfectly fitting puzzle pieces that by the end I felt like the picture that was put together was stunningly beautiful.

The guess the main things I have to say is:

I hate all the tragic scenes that made me cry but by... more>> golly, it’s such a well made bittersweet story that I can’t help but be moved from the very bottom of my heart. Worth the read. <<less

The plot and the translation deserves 5⭐!

IT WASN'T CUTE AT ALL!! Minimal, MINIMAL cuteness with death and all. I felt bad for those characters cause they portrayed humanity despite being in that apocalyptic era. Utilitarianism was the concept of the base and that sucks, they were just trying to survive and no one was in the right or wrong (like AoT).

The foreshadowing of the author got me crying while chanting to myself that this is HE!! HE!! I should thank the previous reviews that stated it. Kudos to the translation!

This describtion really has very little to do to the story... Why do the descriptions here tend to be so inadequate? Really pazzles me. It's thanx to the TL note that I risked to read this...

Aaand... This is great. The story is GREAT. Though it's difficult in a way to read... ^^ liiike... ... more>>
Spoiler

Our little mushroom exploring this world, meeting people and immersing the reader into that life... Then something happens, people fight with all their might coping wonderfully but everybody dies. Then somehow the survivors are trying to adjust to the new reality, the little mushroom immerses into the changed world again, people, despite the horrible losses try their hardest to cope well, see the future in an optimistic light and do their best to reach that bright future and then everybody dies again. And then the story repeats. That is... When I was reading... I was like "well, true, it is a great story, but everything is so damn horrible that the phrase " happy ending" in the end of description looks utterly ridiculous. That is, even if the MC and ML couple somehow survives, the humankind has already pretty gone extinct, and even if it finds a way to somehow survive, SO FREAKING MANY PEOPLE DIED, WHAT'S SO HAPPY ABOUT IT?!" - that is... It always amases me how it is called a "happy end" if the main couple survives and has a chance to live harmoniously together after the story, even if everybody else is pretty much dead and everything is ruined ^^ but the interesting thing is that it really can be considered as a happy end... The humankind was cruelly cornered in this situation, living, though in greater numbers, but in constant fear and suffering... Now it can slowly revive in a different form, that is more free and happy and that has a potential to actually develop and not only barely preserve, waiting for the bitter end. I only thought that they won't have such a chance if their meager 5k worldwide remaining population get's eaten by monsters, but then I realized... With the Bell working worldwide, lots of wandering heterogenous shall regain their consciousness, increasing the human population, and the monsters have pretty much calmed down and stoped atacking everyone and everything indiscriminately, they also stopped especially targeting humans, and humans now have both their tecknology and controlled genetic metamorphoses also with immunity to unwanted infection, so they should be fine))

[collapse]

Ughm, well, to conclude, the story is great, characters have depth with character growth, MC and ML are especially wonderfull... I love their personalities... The plot and the world are non-cliche and very well-built. The peculiar feature of this novel is... Usually in such fantesy/science fiction stories something that logically doesn't make sense keeps happening and nobody cares because this is fiction and readers just accept it as it is... I originally suffered from this nonsense (like the situation with zombies. There can be some unknown explanation to their post-mortum activity but the fact that they can freely move their limbs even with their musceles mostly decayed it totally unrealistic, their hunger that is exclusive for living human flesh when they don't even have a way to digest it is also idiotic. And these things are never explained) but then somehow got used to it... In this espect this story is a real TREASURE, the strange things are noticed by people in the story and they are studied... Really, I would've been already glad to only have this awareness present in the story (even this is a total rarity), but the story develops and a beautiful explanation is being found near the end of the story... A pretty much realistic (though not easily comprehended) axplanstion to all the changes in unreasonable behaviour of the mutants.

Thus... I just love this story. And I'm very grateful to the author. And to the translators (though sometimes it's difficult to read due to some T9 replaced words or whatever it is).

I strongly reccomend this one to people with some intelligence)) but be ready to lots of sufferings along the way XDD

And yes, there is not much adventure... It's more about the fate of humanity and the Earth, as well as our little mushroom and the ML, but not so much about the usual postapocaliptic adventurous activities like farming resourses through fighting monsters and such) the strengh growth here is also not so much about the fighting ability but about the strengh of character, decisions made, hardships overcome...

P.S. the tag "lack of common sense" is really out of place here =/ just like the novel's description. Who even composes them?? <<less

Let's talk about genres first. This novel is a serious, heavy, and has a tense storyline. Also, it's not a fluffy story because the nature of the main characters doesn't support such scenes and I hope it will stay that way until the end so there is no OOC. There is a part of the MC and ML interaction that makes me smile of course but within reasonable limits and does not interfere with the plot.

The story is slow (perhaps because it is detailed) but it is not boring and... more>> it actually feels interesting.

The supporting characters are described in detail and logically but they are short-lived so that the change from one character to the next is too fast (very cannon fodder way).

Many scenes are gripping and make you use your brain to rethink the scenes presented, so read with concentration. <<less

Okay, is just good, too good to be true!

Has it all, romance, fluff, angst, makes you think about human behavior, and you’ll feel despair in every single turn.

Even almost a year after I finished it I can’t forget about it. The concepts are per say not so unique but the execution is stellar! The MC is one of the most interesting MC I’ve ever seen. How can the MC be a mushroom and feel like a mushroom!? This author is genius.

The “love interest” or 2nd MC is just the cutest... more>> (not really, he can be scary) but you do feel every emotion and he’s just so perfecto for the little mushroom.

I love this story, I’m fighting really hard not to read it again cause I want to read other books but time to time I return just to read my favorite parts! 100% recommend!!!.

My only complain:

Great science fiction story set in a dystopian future, but with a happy ending. I like the interaction of the main characters and the development of the MC. As the story progresses you get a better sense of what drives the ML and his character as a person. I also liked how the MC's character develops and the innocence with which he views the society and environment he lives in.

This story is awesome! Phenomenal! The lesson that resonated among me the most is to strive. That no matter how negative your current situation is, as long as you persevere, you will surely see the light in the cave; it may not came right away, but still in due time it will.

Jesus H Christ.

You do not know what you're getting into by starting this. First of all, look at the excellent reviews above and below me. Second of all, this is one of famous RainbowTurtle's favorite danmi novels. And now it is one of mine as well.

Little Mushroom's summary does not do it justice. First of all, why do I have any interest in a mushroom looking for its spore? No, it is so much more. It is a bit of a slow start until MC An Ze gets to the... more>> base but wow. This romance is incredible. ML Lu Feng is the best ML honestly. I think he is my favorite. I've definitely fallen for this man compared to the other ML's in danmei. He is courageous, romantic, kind (ok not so much kind to others but man does he protect our little boy and does so much for him). I hope to one day find a man that can even come close to him.

The story follows An Ze as he looks infiltrates the human base to look for his spore. It deals with love, a lot of loss, romantic and awkward moments. Lu Feng protects this little mushroom while suspecting him to not be human but also favors him in many ways. They grow closer over this period and it is indeed complicated. The story is written like a tragedy so much so that so many comments say they have to indeed confirm it is a HAPPY ENDING. Even I was like, how the heck is this going to have a happy ending?? But thank god it does.

Its a really heavy web novel that it seems like an actual dense novel. The writing is incredible and I'm glad turtle was our translator so the meaning and flow really came across.

Again, amazing. You're not doing yourself justice if you skip this. <<less

i don’t even know how to describe this novel. it’s one of the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful, simple post-apocalypse love stories about trauma and recovery, and also bafflingly hysterical at times. at its core, this book is about two people who should, by all rights, be on opposite sides—they should hate each other, kill each other, work against each other... but they’re so beaten down by this world that instead they come together and help each other heal and find comfort with each other. on the other hand, in the span... more>> of one chapter the book transitions from the “there was only one bed” trope to

nuking a quarter of the city.

the tonal dissonance in this book is delightfully unsettling, and I loved every word.

the main character is indeed a mushroom, and I loved how convincingly the book reflected that. he's blunt, he doesn't understand social cues. he'll mycelium-ify himself to crawl through the vents like he's playing Among Us before its time, or use his steady nonhuman hand to perfectly recreate his future love interest into a RealDoll commission (did I mention the RealDoll shenanigans?), every eyebrow hair carefully rendered in perfect detail only a mushroom could manage. he'll also monologue about how f#cked up it is that humans seem to subsist primarily off mushroom soup while he psychs himself up to participate. we stan a cannibal?

i read this book back in july 2020 and as I am writing this quick little review it is now the new year, but this book has stuck with me unlike any other. it's one i've found myself thinking about throughout the year, remembering passages that made me double over laughing or passages that haunted me, often times in the same paragraph. everything from the sudden, jarring deaths of characters I was certain would stick around longer to the specific plot beats that punched me in the face one after the other. this little mushroom crawled inside my brain and has not left, and if lu feng met me on the street he would certainly judge me as infected.

5 stars, easy. read this book. <<less
