“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

I wouldn't say this story is life changing, but it was a good read.

I read this story for the relationship between the MC and ML. I really couldn't have cared less about the plot, but that is entirely due to my disinterest in sci-fi (give me a 800 chapter cultivation novel and I could read for days about all the backstory). I ended up skimming most of the scientific-y explanations and backstories of the base, but I didn't ever feel lost.

A couple of things to keep in mind: there is... more>> no betrayal tag, there is no tragedy tag, and there is no r*pe tag. These all are very near-miss as there were a few times that I double and triple checked for these tags while I was reading.

If I had to nit-pick about anything it would be on the translation not using euphemisms for 'shot in the head' ('executed' is right there) : aside from the fact that shots to the head aren't always fatal in the first place, it got really monotonous reading 'xx was shot in the head' a hundred+ times.

There are other things I didn't actually like in this story, but I don't really want to focus on that when I did actually make it to the end of the story in a good mood. <<less

changed the trajectory of my life 10/10

also made me cry with a sentence that, out of context, would sound cute. That kind of sums up this novel, so watch out it you're looking for sheer fluff LOL

But in more of a serious review on why I got so into this, I loved the contrast of tones and how feelings and morality are portrayed, especially from the point of view of an outsider, a non human entity. The tone of the world in series was so hopeless at times, that it... more>> makes you cherish any small sweet interaction between the main characters, and if this was set in a different setting I may not have really noticed them near as much. <<less

desolate, incredibly reflective. For me, this would be the ideal type of novel to read on a quiet and calm winter night

This novel was FAR BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE. Going in, I only knew of this being sci-fi and having nice angst. I don't particularly love or hate sci-fi, but I LOVE angst. Then there were soooo many other aspects of this novel that I loved!!!!

1. The building. SO MAGNIFICENT. I love this deliberate, meticulous type of read. There is not one insignificant detail (as... more>> much as it may not seem). The novel goes beyond of what I expected in the sci-fi and philosophical elements; deeper and deeper into the concepts as the story progresses. This totally blew me away. The build-up was a little lengthy and consistent; an enduring process.
    • Again, I'm not a fan of sci-fi. To be more specific with this novel, the monsters' random mix of traits (some background science here and there) and overall apocalyptic world isn't something I find particularly interesting. But, unexpectedly, it dove DEEP into the science behind this. To the very fundamentals. It was weaved well into the story, it feels the very most of complete. Thinking back, there were definitely foreshadowing for this though
    • Philosophical elements. For first half of the novel it's more about the group interests in society with a clear distinction. Later, it builds off of that, into the characters more personally and then those in-between of those beliefs and ideas. Everything is sooooooooooooooooo developed, it just really takes time and thought. But due to that, it doesn't feel overwhelming at all. It's easy to digest, but additionally the novel doesn't explain it all to you. While there are realizations in the novel, the connecting together and interpretation heavily depend on the reader
2. An Zhe and Lu Feng is really interesting to me, the totally natural way they have been brought together. I really loved this portrayal of love. There's an undeniable bond from how compatible they are, but their commitment + interest + effort + courage is equally as important. This sounds fun but later in the novel I felt slapped across the face a bunch of times. The world was really trying to tear them apart, but from this

it reminds you all of what they are.

3. The Angst. I've got to be one of the greatest angst enjoyers I swear. I LOVE IT VERY BADLY. Little mushroom gives pretty good angst in my more personal opinion. They don't have a devastatingly long development full of hurt. Instead, it's very subtle. Just under the surface of these characters. This explodes at the key moments. But disregarding the main characters, it takes on a desolate feeling for much of the story. I couldn't help but feel completely hopeless for the characters in this novel many times.

4. Surprise factor isn't something that really matters in this novel, though you can kinda guess that from just the primarily deliberate and meaningful nature of this novel <<less

I'm a picky reader and haven't gotten into any cnovels in so long until this. I finished it in 2 days cuz that's how good it was. This is such an amazing story, the world-building, the characters, and the romance. All of it was written so well. I loved both the MC and ML. It's HE too; I wish I could forget this story so that I could reread this like the first time again and again. I say this as someone who isn't into sci-fi and apocalypse stories. I... more>> was also a bit hesitant because I heard that it had more plot then romance but I'm glad I gave it a try anyways. It was very well written, and I loved getting to know An Zhe's perspective as he navigated the world as a lil mushroom who didn't know much about the world. He was the best part of the book and so precious.

The romance in this is more subtle but still enjoyable. I'd say read the novel for the plot rather than the romance because the plot takes the driver's seat.

After this book, it makes me want to try out more books that I usually wouldn't have, because if I loved this so much, then what else have I missed? <<less

I honestly hated this novel but it's too good to rate any lower. Whether it's the character building or plot, even the translation was handled well.

But I honestly was expecting fluff only to get punched really hard by reality. If it wasn't for the HE tag I wouldn't of read it to the end because I was in tears trying to find the happy ending. (There is one btw)

Even though I'd never read it again, and the fact that angst books are not my cup of tea, I don't... more>> regret finishing this one.

Although now I always check the comments before reading any novel just in case. <<less

Broo this is so good, 9.6/10

The story and the character are beautifully written, gorgeous. Despite all the dark themes, it has something that make you wanna read it more. This story make us thinking about life and death itself, and I love it.

I love MC and ML relationship, they are cute! :D

Highly recommend this novel. Even without the bl aspect this novel will not lose to a lot of top rated novels. The story is so intricate with details and the characters are written so well. I love everything about this novel. I went in thinking it was all fluff oh boy was that wrong. Cried so much for my baby An Zhe but no tears were wasted.

It's a very good novel, a great work I should say. This novel made me question things that should not be answered, this novel made me realize just how fragile and fickle human life is. Humanity's sins their good virtues and attributes, the despair, sadness, anger, happiness. It was well portrayed and detailed this novel made me feel anxious about the upcoming future. 'Will humans experience this? Do we ever have time to stop it? If it ever does happen, will humanity ceased to exist?' Questions after questions surged my... more>> head.

I'm very reluctant to part with this novel, this writing made me cry that I almost woke up my siblings. You don't have to worry An Zhe and Lu Feng have a happy ending. The humanity is still standing, although mixed with different genes, humans are still alive.

Spoiler

I'm very attached to Vance, Poet, Boss Shaw and Du Sai, unfortunately they died too early on the novel, perhaps it was blessing to die than survive in that cruel world, It was just sad they didn't get to see humanity peacefully even if its only a short time. I pity Madam Lu, Hubbard and Tang Lan. Perhaps they would have live a nice, quiet and beautiful life if things didn't happened as they were. But we humans do not know such thing as future. I also really like Doctor Ji haha such a funny guy, I'mvery surprised he stayed sane in the end.

[collapse]

This novel is unique and different than what I usually read, this is a new change. I'm very surprised about the writing, it makes you feel really sad and numb, as if you the reader was also a judge looking down the people and killing them. This novel, i, I'm very glad I read this.

The ML and MC are sweet and loving, fantastic and enjoyable to watch, as if they're the only star in wide countless galaxies. The supporting characters doesn't fall behind, they were great as well, they mostly makes me feel the most sad. Because their story or background was so heart-wrenching. I do wish they're reincarnated in another place away from crisis just like year 2020.

(P.s listen to apocalypse by cigarette after sěx, this song gives well in the melancholic and the two of us left vibe. And perfect. <<less

LM is really quite dark but it kept me entertained throughout my reading.

Aside from bits of sweetness between AZ and LF, I'd say it was a "clean" adventure story, very little focus on romance except for the extras.

Very emotionally entangling but you'll see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's HE but who can say for sure.

The best novel I read this year, and definitely my favorite Sci-Fi danmei. It was cute and fluffy but also beautiful and subtle. An Zhe was the prefect protagonist and I found myself falling for him as a main character even faster than Lu Feng.

Little Mushroom is simply wonderful; it's well written and has an interesting plot and characters. This story made me think about what humanity really means, how little we know about the universe, and how insignificant mankind is.

I won't describe the plot itself; I think it's better to read this novel without knowing anything. I will just say that both MC and ML are wonderful. I really liked MC; he is such a naive and kind person who seems out of place in such a dark place. He is such a... more>> pure soul. I also loved ML; it's really hard to describe his character; he seems cruel and cold but is actually so selfless, putting others interests above all. At first glance, these two have nothing in common and should be enemies, yet they match each other perfectly. That's what makes their relationship so interesting.

I really enjoyed reading this novel and will reread it in the future. I will recommend it, and I can guarantee you won't regret reading it. <<less

I really loved this novel. I was just looking for something to read and pass my time but I didn't expect that it would take over my top favorites. The description is cute but I must warn you that it is NOT AT ALL cute, well except for the little mushroom. But still, I REALLY RECOMMEND READING THIS BOOK at least once in your life. IT IS WORTH IT.

The plot is REALLY GOOD. The characters' development is steady and growing. I loved how the ML did not throw away all... more>> his values just because he met someone that he likes. The little mushroom is so cute and naive. Reading this story from the perspective of the mushroom really gives a refreshing view. It is like seeing the fate of humanity unfold as a bystander. Also, the emotional rollercoaster this book took me was kind of intense. Seeing the humans struggle to survive, rekindling their kindness and unity. Some parts tore my heart apart and I almost had an emotional breakdown too. Although it may seem that it is a short novel, the story is not rushed at all.

This book really made me think about humanity, our kindness, and what defines us as humans. The scientific explanations really blew my mind away, I admire the author for writing this book. <<less

I'm baffled that this work isn't rated a full five-star. Really, it's that good.

It was a beautifully balanced story of what it means to be a human in the face of true despair, the greyness of rights and morals, and hope in the midst of impermanence. Unlike the majority of the books I've read, no part of the narration ever felt forced. There is nothing I would change about this story. It's perfect, and undeniably the best novel I've read so far among both fan-translated and published English novels.

Although the... more>> world was ending, and the situation deteriorated, there was never a point where it was purely full of darkness and despair. It was balanced out with hope and the kindness of people, perhaps because it was written from the perspective of the little mushroom who was untainted by evil and whose appearance was harmless and loveable. His attitude was merely reciprocated.

I really appreciated how all the people he came across were not unnecessarily evil like how it is in many novels, portrayed as such to enhance the main characters' good qualities.

The worldbuilding is also highly believable. It wouldn't feel like a stretch if our current sciences are all overhauled in this manner one day. It's true that our current systems seem to be more concerned with neatness rather than accuracy and we actually know very little. We can't even decrypt our brain--how will we decrypt everything else? The theories were all highly readable too and the information is timely since we learn as the mushroom, who knows nothing but some literature, learns. There weren't any cases of info dumping where I had to reread twice and still struggle to understand.

And well, the best part is the happy ending! I did tear up twice while I was reading but I love how they ended up together and their sacrifices all paid off. Perhaps some people will argue that an ending like this where everything's well and no one gets hurt is unrealistic but I'm a sucker for sappy endings.

This book will probably occupy the top 1 place in my reading list for a long time. <<less

I really love it

I finished it in a day and I don't understand how the time passed. Among the novels that I wish had more chapters. First of all, each of the characters has different characteristics and goals. you can find yourself while reading. my whole day was gone for the novel but I still don't regret it :) I wrote all this with the help of translation, I hope there are no... more>> nonsense sentences... And this is my first comment. I'm definitely not excited... <<less

WOW Just wow

I would have liked it to be longer, I really enjoyed it. I didn't expect it to be so... tragic, I really had to remind myself that at the end of this story there has to be a happy ending.

The plot is amazing, a bit different from other "apocalypse" and "end of the world" stories, it was extremely interesting.

The MC is absolutely fantastic and the ML is not far behind, I really loved all the characters.

Their relationship goes from little to little and it's extremely cute, they live through so many things and I'm glad I read this kind of relationship.

There really are moments when I was thinking about what the characters were going through and it really hurt. This story is fantastic, but as I said it is very sad and leaves you with that bittersweet taste. It leaves you thinking about what the human race is capable of doing to survive.... <<less
