At eighteen years old, Lin Qingyu was married as part of a Chong Xi into the Nan’an Hou Mansion, becoming the ill Lu Wancheng’s male wife.

On the eve of their wedding, Young Master Hou lay lazily on the bed and said, “Beauty, to be honest, I really don’t want to engage in domestic struggles. I just want to drift along, eat and wait to die. I want to be a Salted Fish.”

A year later, Young Master Hou became gravely ill. He took Lin Qingyu’s hand and sighed, “Wife, I’m going to die, but I think I can continue to transmigrate. In order for you to properly recognize me in the future, let us set a secret code.”

After the death of Young Master Hou, Lin Qingyu was prepared to stay a widow all his life.
Lin Qingyu would rather die than remarry.

Unexpectedly, after only 1/2 a year, …xoxo… actually came to propose marriage & said “If odd, change; if even, remain the same?”
LQ: “…I will marry you.”

After two years …

Lin Qingyu knew that although his husband was a bag of lazybones, no one was his equal

I HAD TO REGISTER AN ACCOUNT JUST TO RATE THIS AMAZING NOVEL. INFINITE/10, WILL NEVER FORGET IT. I LOVE THE STORY, THE PLOT, THE ANGST AND HOW WELL THE ROMANCE IS. MUA MUA MUA, AS EXPECTED OF BIKABI, THE AUTHOR. IT IS SO WELL-WRITTEN AND FLUFFY ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I LOVE LIN QINGYU, HE IS THE BEST DOCTOR (and our favourite.) HE LITERALLY HAS A GREAT GRUDGE LIST AND IS THE BEST BOY. I love a cold and evil MC, (he’s hot to when he does bad stuff. No wonder Jiang Xing... more>> compliments him. I AGREE JIANG XING, I AGREE.) Lin Qingyu is unreasonably funny without knowing. Shameless bottom ❤️. He’s so cute near the end of the novel. Love Jiang Xing with all his heart, literally had a breakdown when Gu Fuzhou died. This broke my heart. “I want you to eat well, sleep well.” HSKCHDCKDICM

JIANG XING (our favourite salted fish.) BRO WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR HIS WIFE 😭😭❤️❤️. He’s such a good husband, he’s the definition of ‘don’t let them know your next move.’ He’s carefree but he would work hard just for his wife. Shameless top ❤️. I LOVE HOW HE’S SO LAZY BUT STILL HAD TO DO HIS WORK NO MATTER WHAT. (Almost like me and I love it.) Good at everything, Jiang Xing coaxing his aloof beauty is my pride and joy.

I LOVE THE MODERN AU, WITH QINGYU LOVING BUBBLE TEA AND FIND HIS NEW HOBBY (gaming.) AND JIANG XING TEACHING HIM CANTONESE AND MANY NEW STUFFS. They both slowly act like each other in the end, with Qingyu turning into salted fish and Jiang Xing working worst than a dog.

THIS IS A GEM. READ IT OR I WILL BE UNDER YOUR BED TONIGHT.

I love Shen Huaishi too, he’s loyal. I like how he’s funny in the extras. IT PAINS ME HOW HE HAD TO BE WITH XIAO CHENG IN THE ORIGINAL STORY. (SO GLAD JIANG XING TRANSMIGRATED AND NEVER LEAVE OUR ALOOF BEAUTY.)

POWER COUPLE!!!!

Started nicely but got very predictable soon. The transmigrated ML starts as a teenager, yet he has a perfect mastery of the setting -- clothing, speach, military affairs. The MC is a demoted imperial doctor, yet he has a free access everywhere within the palace including the imperial harem. None of the royal family nor the people serving them have any brains, it seems, so the palace intrigues are really boring, and the MC-ML pair manage to get themselves involved in the succession battle without anyone noticing. It's as if... more>> the world outside the two doesn't move at all unless an event they expect has to happen. <<less

Excellently written! Even though I knew the ML's deaths were coming and that he would definitely reincarnate in another body, I still bawled my eyes out each time.

Theirs is probably the type of love I want for myself: ML accepts and supports everything the MC does and will even work hard (which he dislikes doing since he just wants to be a salted fish) so he can help MC flourish. Meanwhile, the MC also loves the ML wholeheartedly. He's a cold beauty who doesn't hesitate to do bad things to people who harmed him, but his heart was actually moved by ML. I adore their scheming.

Our ML and MC are just perfect. They are 10/10 characters and 10/10 couple. Every couple aspire to be this couple. 100% honesty, 100% love, 100% respect.

Everything is so perfect, just that I'm sorely tempted to drop the stars to 4 because of the extras. They are not offensive, just that too boring if I know they don't hold the same standard as the main story I would have drop it long ago. It feels like author milking the couple for all their worth. But still 5/5 because I like... more>> the main story too much. <<less

Good, really readable, engaging characters. Nice to have an enjoyable ML who isn't cold, possessive, domineering etc etc. Great chemistry between the main couple and both had well-written personalities.

One key plot point dragged out far far far far too long in the middle and eventually I skimmed a little to get through that.

The MCs crossed the line of just and benign actions somewhat, which can be an issue for me unless there's good reason for me to root for them, but the author barely managed to keep me endorsing... more>> them and pulled them back towards the end. (Generally, those they target are people who harm or are trying to harm them and aren't particularly great people overall.) They were also portrayed as smarter when it came to scheming than some of their actions indicated, so I had to not get too critical.

Overall, a really nice read, which could have become heavy but managed to be a slightly more frivolous read than it could have been thankfully (since I didn't want too much angst or serious drama without relief). <<less

I skipped over this story due to the synopsis several times before deciding to try reading it (after several stories that I tossed into my 'tr*sh' file after two or three chapters, due to poor writing or the translator having utterly mangled the English language). The translation quality of this one is quite good. The story isn't entirely unique, in many ways it's a typical palace or political intrigue story, but it's an interesting angle. At many points, the story drags and is quite predictable, but it's worth pushing through... more>> and finishing. The author and translator do an excellent job of depicting surprisingly poignant scenes, mixed with the kind of dry humor that I love, but rarely see in novels (I really, really hate slapstick. Dry humor/irony is so much more entertaining). The main character is a little vicious, but I only saw one situation where I didn't think it was entirely justified, and that situation was later remedied. Vicious can be fun, too. Overall, for a palace or political intrigue novel, the cruelty was kept to a fair minimum while being used in a reasonable and intelligent manner, rather than flung around for cheap shock value. <<less

5 stars. Cold, indifferent, grudge-holding devious MC and very lazy but also devoted and somewhat devious ML who understands the MC is cold and grudge-bearing and both likes and encourages it. The power couple tag often doesn't mean much but in this case, they truly are a power couple and sometimes literal partners in crime.

It was refreshing to read an MC who isn't a good person, knows it, and is okay with that, but also isn't actively seeking to trample others or climb social ladders. He just wants to be... more>> a doctor and is perfectly fine as long as others leave him alone—he's only vicious and vengeance-minded when others wrong him. He only cares about himself and, gradually, the ML.

The romance was fairly well done in that it's quiet and slow, with no single moment of falling in love. It really did feel like two people thrown together by unfortunate circumstances and the overriding will of others, who became reluctant partners in order to get by, and that partnership awkwardly deepened until the awkwardness disappeared and they individually realized how much they did care about each other—and actually understood each other.

The premise of the non-protagonist ML being lazy + a transmigrator into a novel was entertaining with plenty of room for comedy and the navigation of political and social intrigue. The author chose to keep everything from the MC's POV, so there's no potentially annoying tropes of following the ML's modern-day supposedly-superior thought processes or being painted as "smart" because he has knowledge of the original novel's plot and basically narrating both that and how he's changing it.

It makes the novel far more interesting and makes the most of the premise that it's from the POV of a cannon fodder side character involved with an equally cannon fodder side character who happens to be a transmigrator—but unlike other such "cannon fodder becomes the MC" novels, there's not a huge emphasis on I'M NOT GONNA BE A CANNON FODDER!!! Instead, they very much are normal protagonists/MCs with their own complex stories, backgrounds, and motivations. I actually forgot most of the time that they were originally styled as cannon fodder. I also liked that the ML—

Spoiler

—never explicitly in detail revealed himself as a transmigrator in the main story, although by the end the MC had long picked up on the ML being obviously unusual and from a very different place, and was okay with that because he only cared about who he was, not where he was from. And that felt very genuine.

[collapse]

The MC is pretty smart without being overbearing about it and the ML is also fairly smart with the advantage of his transmigrator's knowledge additionally letting him plan ahead for some things, but unexpected situations still trip them up together and individually and force them to change their plans. They aren't so OP that they flawlessly power through court intrigue and easily trample the machinations of antagonists, so it stays fairly interesting.

As far as criticism goes, some sections felt a little long, like when waiting for the main pair to reunite after the ML's first death, and some parts were inoffensively predictable—like, nothing bad but nothing new. Overall though there was nothing that stood out as particularly bad or super annoying, which is a rarity for me in these kinds of novels. I enjoyed the story quite a bit.

I was into the premise of the epilogues at first as it sounded like an entertaining situation reversal, but after some initial cuteness they quickly proved to be boring. There's no drama and nothing of interest because the MC is suddenly OP, adapts perfectly and immediately, and everything goes perfectly in sharp contrast to the main story. They're way too long with nothing happening to have entertainment value. I'd say read the after-story stuff until it stops being cute and then drop it. <<less

The other reviews have pretty much said it all. The summary is kind of bad, but the story is good. The translation is also smooth and pleasant to read (but could use some proofreading since there's a lot of typos).

This story is for people who like the combo of transmigration+revenge plots+MCs and MLs who power up+devoted power couple+morally grey MCs.

The MC is very morally grey and actually not a good person. His revenges are slightly disproportionate to what people have actually done to him, but it's still fun to read... more>> about if you like main characters who are not perfectly righteous.

The ML falling for the MC precisely because he's vindictive and petty and sinister is fun to read about.

The chemistry is great and the romantic development is one of the best I've read in a danmei. It goes from the MC and ML both claiming to be straight and not interested in men at all*, to slowly finding common ground and mutually respect, aligning their interests and struggling with their growing feelings for each other. No major misunderstandings, the MC and ML's reasons for being slow with confessing (both to themselves and their love interest) makes sense in context, especially considering their age and the weird circumstances that constantly pull them together.

*they're both inexperienced teenagers who've never even been close to the opporsite s*x, so them both claiming to be straight seem more like an instinctive declaration due to their first, forced marriage. Neither ever expresses any real interest in women - the MC is pretty much frigid except when it comes to the ML.

The two deaths of the ML were well-written and quite emotional, especially the first one, where the MC has time to grieve and has no idea if the ML will truly come back.

Weak points: Not many, except a few minor points:

Extras: Skip unless you really want to have a very long, uneventful slice-of-life story of the MC and ML in ther modern world, but without any real plot and with the MC being stripped of all his evil sides (the traits that made him a fun character). He's basically a cat without claws. The first couple of extras about their married life in Dayu were okay, but also not super interesting.

Xiao Cheng/crown prince side-plot: There's short scene in the final chapters that heavily imply that

Spoiler

the crown prince faked his death and still pursues Shen Huaishi. Which would have been both interesting and in line with the plot of the original novel. It felt really underwhelming that he just died off-screen despite being one of the big antagonists. But this scene never went anywhere and nothing was ever mentioned again.

[collapse]

Book plot: It was weird and not very believable how

Spoiler

the MC found out his world was originally from a novel - aka not real, and he just never reacted to it. It also wasn't very believable that the ML had no reaction to having transmigrated into a book - there was never any moral dilemma about how he perceived the people in the book, and it was weird how he just made his peace with dying in his first life without any real reaction to his own transmigration and previous death in the real world. The was something that hinted a system (normal to transmigration novel) since he told the MC that a 'she' had told him that the MC was the most beautiful person in the whole world of Dayu, but then this never got mentioned again.

[collapse]

It was however refreshing to read a transmigration novel for once were the transmigrator was the ML, not the MC, and the fact that the ML had transmigrated, while very obvious to the reader, only gradually got revealed to the MC.

All in all a good story, but don't read it if you dislike unapologetically evil MCs and couples that find doing bad things together a good couple's activity. <<less

This novel definitely took me by surprise with how much I ended up enjoying it! For sure a favorite. I honestly wish there was more, I just loved the main couple so much.

Took me a while to get invested in this story, maybe about 20 chapters, but once I was in, I just could not put this story down! The plot really starts picking up once more mysteries are unveiled, and the characters feel a bit more fleshed out. I really enjoyed how everything built up so naturally and the... more>> characters had the time to slowly get to know one another. Despite the title giving away the main premise of the novel, the plot was still quite interesting and held a few surprises. I was definitely surprised when ML was revealed to be

Spoiler

just a high schooler, not even 18 yet, when he transmigrated. The way he was so calm about his oncoming death and so upbeat really made me think he was going to be much older, or that this was just one transmigration out of many for him, rather than being his first.

[collapse]

MC is scheming and ML is happy to just watch his brilliant husband in action (and also scheme right alongside him). The relationship dynamic is very fresh and the two of them made me really just so invested in their love story. The title basically lays out the plot that ML is going to be dying a few times in order for MC to marry him three times, but I still found myself crying the first time he died. The second time I was a bit hardened and just waiting for the third body since it was clear who he was going to be reincarnated into though.

Would recommend reading at least the first 20 or so chapters before giving up on this novel if you're not too invested at the start like I was! The storyline really does pick up the pace and the court politics were very fun to read. Both MC and ML are very interesting characters and I did enjoy their interactions with the side characters as well. The plot is very engaging what with the three different marriages as well, and I only really felt ready for the second arc to end when it started becoming clear that it was time for ML to die soon haha

Can I also say that MC after he falls in love is absolutely the cutest lover?? Like this boy had such a transformation once he realized his feelings. Literally brings me so much joy when a tsundere opens up and can sweet talk back to their lover.

The extras are also comedic gold. I really love the original MC character lol. Wish he got his own happy ending too, but honestly his happy ending is being the third wheel let's be real haha <<less

Perspective is mostly third person POV between the leads but for the sake of confusion I’ll consider Doctor Lin the primary POV/MC.

... more>> Pairing Type: beautiful, doctor MC X Transmigrator ML; slightly tsundere MC; shou MC; genius MC; himbo/jokester ML; salted fish ML

Tropes: transmigrated into a book; ancient court politics; emperor; gay marriage

Triggers: death; terminal illness; torture (not of the leads) ; attempted r*pe (brief and unsuccessful on MC) ; su*cide

Heat level: 2/5 (behind closed doors) ; leads are fans of making out and they are both enthusiastic lovers. However, all love scenes are fade to black

Re-watch: 3/5 - might reread one day

The tears I shed for this novel? My god. It just has everything you could possibly want and I experienced the full suite of emotions.

The plot is intricate and well done. The main source of drama is court politics, the leads playing 5-D chess with the antagonists. For the most part, antagonists are well-rounded and complicated. No one is truly good or bad, only shades of gray.

For me it’s the leads relationship that settles this as a phenomenal read. They are the very definition of DEVOTED. The relationship is also quite organic, you can seen MC slowly grow to care for ML and eventually they become inseparable.

Super rare, but I love the ML. He’s actually got a personality and has hobbies. He’s fun-loving and lazy. He doesn’t take himself too seriously and is a perfect balance to MCs more cold but cute persona.

Also, this is the first time of read a novel where the MC is the book character and the ML transmigrates into his story. It becomes pretty apparent pretty early on but all of his early interactions suddenly make sense when you put it together.

MC leans a little tsundere, but once he and ML get together, he is quite honest and cute with him. He’s the type that doesn’t open up to anyone but the ML, which makes their interactions feel more special.

Their love for each other is so apparent. They are so respectful of one another and truly know each other better than anyone else. The emotions feel so real and so authentic.

Just wow, do yourself a favor and read this immediately. <<less

this was a surprisingly fun read! Though the glaring spoilers in the summary take away from the excitement of certain scenes, it's still possible to go with the flow and enjoy things as they come. The novel reads really easily: cg's translation is solid as always, and the plot moves pretty quickly. I got some complaints, of course, but this isn't the type of novel that you approach with the expectation of beautiful writing heavy with figures of speech or thought-provoking lines. It's all pretty straightforward, and it's obvious that... more>> the author wanted the readers to pay attention to the budding romance of the main cp above all. So, if that part is what you end up enjoying the most, not unlike me, you're bound to overlook its other flaws and just appreciate the story for what it does do well.

now, let me get this out of the way first: the plot isn't all that impressive overall. There's some petty revenge and face-slapping (low-profile as well as high-profile), antagonists that can't and don't do much more than flaunt their position and taunt their underlings, and mean comments about the mc's 'wife' status that got old pretty fast. Nothing really gets better with time, it's just that the focus of the plot shifts to different things. It helps that the MC is pretty level-headed and confident, so the reader isn't left feeling frustrated whenever he's being targeted. He's more than ready to retaliate at any and every offense, and his (as well as the ml's) awareness and acknowledgement of his vicious pettiness is a fun running gag: they don't make excuses and they aren't evil people in any sense, but they do enjoy giving it back to people who mistreat the MC.

by the time I got to the last chapter, i'd already forgotten that we started out with an arranged marriage and an MC who was feeling mu*derous about it. The main cp develops slowly and organically (that is, outside of their very much inorganic marriages) and the fact that they got forced in a relationship at first becomes irrelevant really early on. The MC has a clear idea of what he wants to do and who he wants to be, and the ML does Not fit in with those plans– that is, until it's revealed that he's just a sweet guy who also has zero plans of making it hard for the MC, and is instead willing to support him in all his endeavors. They go from partners in crime to friends to lovers and it all feels so natural that the rest of the plot just fades away and you're fully invested in the developing romance between the two. There's not much drama to it, but the outside factors (such as rebirth/transmigration putting them in awkward positions) do make it harder for them to just go at their own pace and not the one set by the circumstances, but their communication throughout it all makes for a pleasurable read without misunderstandings that would be unnecessary and maybe even ooc when it comes to these two.

all things considered, i'd say mtsf is an easily palatable, enjoyable novel if you're not looking for too much drama but are looking for a sweet (and surprisingly unproblematic) love story. Actually, this could even make for a good soft launch into the historical novels genre if you're coming from modern or school setting novels, especially considering the 20-ish extra where we see the characters exploring their relationship in a modern setting, without the roles they were placed in in the ancient times. You can definitely get a chuckle or two out of those, but the main story also ends at a good point if that's where you choose to finish reading. Happy reading yall! <<less

Ome of the good ones, really nice. I really love the MC and ML, especially the ML. When he died, I cried (both times). The MC is not a good person, but he won't randomly hurt people. Actually the first danmei after a long time that gave me feels?? I cried for the first two deaths, and that's saying something when you already know that the character will return alive!

Ling Qingyu, our MC, and the main narrator of this story, is forced into a chongxi marriage (aka a marriage done to ward off evil/death) because his astrological chart matched the sick man's—Lu Wancheng— by order of the Empress.

The male lead, Lu Wancheng at first, is a transmigrator, who wakes up on the night of his marraige and... more>> realizes he's in the book in the body of a terminally ill man. Immediately, his only wish is to be a salted fish—a lazy bones couch potato—until he dies.

Unfortunately for him, his newly married spouse is the scheming type of guy, ready to take an eye for an eye, with his first target being those who trapped him in this marriage months before the imperial medical exam. Fortunately for him, that is the type of guy he does like.

I really enjoyed the slow progress of relationship between these two. Going from reluctant allies to good friends to "dating" and then proper husbands. Its not immediate, in fact, it takes them a couple of life-times, but it's beautifully written!

The first time the ML dies, we all know he will die soon—terminally ill, after all—but it's written in such a poignant way, that I genuinely shed a few tears.

The second time, I was waiting anxiously, because the relationship between the MC and ML was at such a great point, and this death would devastate Lin Qingyu in ways the first hadn't. Again, masterfully written.

The best part of this is the emotional growth, and how by the end Lin Qingyu realises that being a salted fish isn't quite bad, actually adopting much of those qualities himself, while his husband starts putting in some effort to not be a salted fish all the time (but still as much as he can get away with).

Brilliant story, brilliant translator, some of the TL notes genuinely made me burst out laughing!

I completed the novel but skipped the extras. Overall a solid 4 stars. I definitely cried a few times while reading this. Though the MC and ML are not the "good" people. They are realer than any most. How many people in reality are willing to forgive (with no apologies received) the people who did them wrong? I'll just say I'm not. Most people doesn't get revenge because the don't have the authority or will power. The plot of the story is based on revenge and scheming set inside a... more>> slow burn love story. Definitely worth the read in my opinion.

Spoiler

I saw some readers criticize how LQY lied to Shen Huashi. The lie he told was basically just semantics. XC did plot to kill him and his clan to secure his spot as crown prince. He just changed mind at the last minute. The emperor just said go with the plan anyways. The final command does not take any from what XC planned to do and definitely does not absolve him for treating SHS like an object for YEARS. LQY just wanted him to have a back bone. I mean SHS still ends up going soft and LQY does tell him the truth and is forgiven in the end.

Went into this completely blind since I heard the synopsis spoils the whole thing (it does).. and I loved it SO much. All I saw was that the MC got married thrice: "once for superstitions, once for politics, and once for love". Of all the danmei I've read thus far, this one was the most romantic. There was still flowery language, but both characters were much more straightforward with their feelings and confessions. The plot actually revolved around them rather than court politics or some mystery. It was heart-wrenching, yet... more>> very sweet. I laughed and I teared up. The novel's main story ends, but you're left with 20+ extras of a modern AU and it is So wonderful... I adore this couple.

I like Shen Huaishi, he's cute. I thought there'll be an extra with him and the Xia Cheng, lol.

Spoiler

Also, Xi Rong, he was quite remarkable and was the closest to some of Xingu scheming skills. He was also ambitious, it's just that he slipped up and crossed his boundary

.

The Xu monk was a good spice too.

Excellent translation too😊👍

Definitely one of the more well written novels. I thoroughly enjoyed the 1st arc. Despite what other reviews claimed, I did not find MC too cruel at all this arc and the relationship with ML progressed naturally. I had Zero issue with MC/ML wanting revenge for those that wrong him or wish to harm him. However, where I draw the line is when they pulled innocent people into their fight. In chapter 77, they were planning spread rumors that the maid (that was married to another country's king) was actually... more>> a man. It just doesn't feel right to cause harm to others that had no issue with you. <<less

SO UNDERRATED. The main couple are not necessarily good people, but they are good to each other which is honestly sadly kinda rare in CN BL. There is no "CNC, " and they gradually fall in love and support each other. Even though you know the MC will die, it really gets you in the feels each time, which is evidence of the talented writing (and translation). I can't recommend this enough if you even remotely like anything about the synopsis.
