Professor System has issued a mission: to rescue the gentle, kind and tragic protagonist shou of the novel “The Exceptional Furnace”.

Song ‘Scholar-Tyrant’ Qingshi: “Don’t worry, Professor! I can definitely ensure the patient’s recovery!”

In the Immortal Realm:

Song Qingshi praised from the bottom of his heart: “My patient is the kindest and most beautiful little angel in the world.”

Yue Wuhuan quietly washed the blood from his hands and smiled softly: “En.”

Song Qingshi swore from the bottom of his heart: “As a doctor, I will never covet nor take advantage of my beautiful patient!”

Yue Wuhuan took full and complete advantage of the doctor and smiled softly: “En.”

Song Qingshi affirmed from the bottom of his heart: “Under my loving care, the patient will never be blackened!”

Yue Wuhuan secretly hid his monstrously evil thoughts and smiled softly: “En.”

At that inextinguishable summit, upon thousand and thousands of soul lamps, he sat on the god’s throne of white bone, guarding that piece of stone.

“You are the only one in this world who treats me tenderly.”

“And so, you are the only one I treat tenderly.”

Scholar-tyrant Song was absolutely delighted: “Professor! Can I get full marks?”

Professor System exploded: “You fool! You saved the wrong person!”

Let me first start off by thanking the translator for their amazing translation work!

This started off strong but got pretty generic and tired real quick. Our MC completely disregards the character he was assigned and turns into a helpless fool almost immediately. I can't stand the bumbling idiot trope, aren't you supposed to be well educated doctor?? He's written a bit like an uwu smol bean tumblr oc.

The plotlines are all over the place too, there were several places it could've ended nicely and you're just beating a dead horse... more>> at this point! At this point it feels like the author smooshed together like three smaller novels and tried to make it work together.

The romance is decent, heteronormative but decent.

Overall its an okay read if you can look past these flaws, I've made it this far so I'll be seeing it to the end but I won't be recommending it to people <<less

This novel is a long therapy session & trust me, you'll come out of it wishing you were born a stone. Don't ask questions- just read it!

The story at a glance: a knowledge-loving bookworm transmigrates into a system-run world in order to save the protagonist shou but ends up saving the villain

The story in actuality: a diehard yandere & his starry-eyed fan

... more>> Me reading this story: I... kinda want a yandere...

My two-cents:

This novel is GOOD. If you need another synonym: it's CRAZY GOOD. Unfortunately, my ability to express in English pales in comparison to the flowery allegories & poetic references that this novel has.

I like how this novel includes a lot of themes about trauma, ab*se, recovery from said ab*se, finding hope when hope is desolate, etc. I feel like it's done a pretty excellent job in incorporating those themes & not brushing over them lightly. The ML is cracked; he's a yandere for goodness sake- that type isn't normal. Fortunately, this novel takes a pretty interesting route in recovery & character development. Surprisingly, it's not only just the ML who's given a redemption ticket, but plenty of other characters are given ample depth to their respective roles. A compelling plot is one thing; a compelling plot with quality characters that are able to be empathized with is another.

The worldbuilding caught me off guard because my pea-brain self wasn't reading much between the lines, so when the full scale unraveled itself, I was blown to pieces. This is an exaggeration btw- I had an inkling of the direction because the author did give decent foreshadowing & hints. The conclusion was beyond satisfaction; I LOVE how it ended & the meaning behind the entirety of the main CP's journey. It's a lot of love, redemption, sacrifice, & forgiveness.

BTW I LOVE THE TL! Thank you for your time & efforts; the translation was phenomenal. I might have to read this a couple of times to fully digest. NO SMUT it's the fade to black with a bunch of flowery lines sort of thing. Now back to reading subpar novels lol <<less

Don't get me wrong, it's a good story. It's just that MC's too dumb, soft and clueless to my liking. I get that you're not that good with dealing ppl, but the hell man? How did you survive for hundreds of years without MLs' help?

You can't make friends? Alright. Bad at making small talks? OK. But why it looks like you can't do anything at all besides research? It was humorous at first later just left me baffled. Alright fam, do your thing, this world also needs soft, in need... more>> of protection, endearing shous with Nascent Soul cultivation.

I also dislike love triangles, haven't looked at the tags, that's my fault. I like An Long more what to do??

Now, how do I even rate this? Can't cross a star because of love triangle, "naive protag" was also in the tags... Naah don't care, 3.

P.s: Forgot to thank the translator, you've done a great job. <<less

I'm saying this now, you have to read the entire story in order to understand why things happen.

The author makes it pretty clear that she doesn't have events "just for show". All the things happen happen for a reason.

This novel is really great, although not on the same level as MDZS and TGCF, the writing is near it.

... more>> It's a great novel and although it didn't make me cry, I did feel heart ache for the characters.

This novel is worth it, entirely worth it. And as I said previously, everything that happened, happened for a reason.

The system, the psychology of the leads, why An Long isn't chosen, ect, ect.

Everything is foreshadowed and interconnected. Their love for each other withstood time and pain.

For he was born for him while he himself waited for him to learn love.

10/10

Well, how should I say, every cloud has a silver lining? This is a story of hope and redemption, the synopsis does not even touch the essence of this novel. This novel depicts how filthy a human heart can be, and how degenerate a society can be. Though all of these are blamed upon the demon at the end of the novel but to be honest there's no difference between the situation in this novel to our current world. That's why I need to pause many time while reading this... more>> especially at the beginning where the author describe how pitiful is the fate of the ML, because I realise those kind of things does happen and still happening in many conners of the world.

Coming back to the story, I really appreciate the MC's characters in the midst of the filthy environment, where he can be the ML's salvation and hope. He might look dull and foolish, but he's just lacking in EQ and social skills. What can I say, I think this character of his is the main reason why he's the perfect one for ML. The MC is smart enough and he knows what he wants. It was just that his thinking and reaction reflex is a bit different from normal people, so don't blame him for that. He is the most hardworking and dedicated character in the entire novel, with sole purpose from beginning till the end.

ML is pitiful, yes. He fell under the calculations of others and suffered for such a long time. I won't say much about him, read this novel and you'll know.

Though I think some parts of the novel are redundant, while others need more description, but since I MTLed the rest of the chapters, I can't really judge the writing and the plot line.

Well anyway, it's a good read. At least the wound at the beginning was healed and it save my heart from breaking and hurting.

P/s: please don't mind my crappy English <<less

Had a very strong start with interesting characters and dynamics. The premise of having a male lead who is neither the innocent, untouched shou, nor the confident, dastardly gong is quite compelling. It was on the right track up until after Ch 31 where it starts to drag, then go downhill. Overall this novel is a lot of missed opportunity. It's full of solid ideas that are let down by the execution.

Pacing:

This is a character-driven novel. The plot is the relationship and if there is a greater conflict past Ch... more>> 61, it's clearly used as a backdrop, not a device that drives the story forwards. That means it's strongest when there's steady character growth or relationship development.

It is strongest in it's first fourth, where you learn about Song Qingshi, Yue Wuhuan, and their relationship. They go from distrusting strangers, to fond gratitude, to something more. It's beautiful to watch them be curious about each other and grow closer. At Ch 31, there's a small climax that promises it's going to be a turning point, whether that's a greater conflict or demarcation in their relationship. Instead, it goes unaddressed even until Ch 61+, which marks the half of the novel.

From here on out, the relationship is stagnant for 30 chapters.
Spoiler

Before Song Qingshi falls into a coma for ten years

[collapse]
, he already wants to give the world to Yue Wuhuan, trusts him absolutely, and feels his heart/cultivation shake for him. Yue Wuhuan also experiences a conflict between desire and inferiority complex. These are already efficiently established through action rather than narration prior to Ch 31. But these points are given no further development.

Consider Ch 31-61 an endless loop of descriptive monologue that reestablishes what the readers already know. I enjoy my fair share of internal narration when it's filled with metaphor and gives deeper nuance, but here, the author even uses the exact same words and phrases from one paragraph to the next. This emphasizes the lack of forward motion in the novel.

Without development, there's nothing to drive the plot forwards. When you look at their relationship at Ch 31 and Ch 61, there's minimal difference. Without conflict, development, or uncertainty, the novel becomes aimless. Characters:

Everything the author does to establish the characters gets invalidated in Ch. 31 to 61. The characterizations frequently contradict themselves, seesawing back and forth between chapters and sometimes even between paragraphs. All the character growth of Yue Wuhuan is reset, and Song Qingshi becomes less and less recognizable as time goes by. This is especially punishing when the novel is entirely character-driven.

On Yue Wuhuan -

Spoiler

There's a timeskip where Yue Wuhuan has a decade to live outside Song Qingshi's observation. Instead of letting his "new self" show through his actions, we're directly told who he is via narration.

[collapse]
But his actions frequently contradict the narration in a way that doesn't feel intentional. Who he is in one moment and the next is entirely plot convenient.

In one chapter, Yue Wuhuan wants to preserve Song Qingshi's innocence, to the point of wanting to hide/imprison him and never touching him. Next chapter, he's completely fine with touching him. In the following, he's once again unwilling. He is described as crazy and wild for revenge. But in a later chapter, he says revenge is unrealistic. If it were the case that Yue Wuhuan's internal monologue is consistent, but his actions prove otherwise, it would be easy to interpret this as a simple case of unreliable narrator. But everything is incoherent. He will seek revenge in one chapter, but ignore an offender in the next. His thoughts contradict his other thoughts, his actions contradict his other actions, and the thoughts and actions themselves are in opposition. As a character, he does not gradually regress or grow, but rather swings inexplicably between two different states when it suits the situation. There is no sense of continuity here.

On Song Qingshi -

He gets even worse treatment. Whereas some of Yue Wuhuan's contradictions can be excused as part of his mental instability, OOC behavior is more obvious with SQS.

The first thing we ever learn about Song Qingshi is that he desires a healthy body, wants to live, and would be forever happy locking himself away for a thousand more years to research. He immediately lied for this opportunity for a second life.

Suddenly in Ch. 60,
Spoiler

he would be willing to die if only to make others feel better and has no regrets. If An Long wanted him to die, he could die at any time. He is deeply insecure and displays suicidal tendencies.

[collapse]
This should not be the case even if it was prior to meeting Yue Wuhuan, given his thoughts in Ch. 1, before their first encounter.

He also goes from happily a shut-in to having deep desires to have friends, travel the world, and embark on adventures. Perhaps it could be explained away as him lying to himself that his isolation is self-inflicted. And yet, his ultimate desire is still to do these exact things.

He's shown to be intimidating externally, but secretly kind. He saves villagers from poisoned prey and children from kidnappers. He's righteously indignant about injustice. But he also says he can kill or torture anyone if Yue Wuhuan wants him to. In one moment he says he can forgive An Long, even willingly die, since his wrongdoings were not intentional. The next paragraph, he says he cannot forgive him.

The characters became caricatures of themselves. Traits appear and disappear at will for pity, for convenience, for a multitude of other reasons. It's incredibly difficult to be engaged in the story when it feels like you're reading about different characters from one paragraph to the next <<less

*WARNING: LONG-ASS REVIEW AHEAD*

What can I say; I started this book as soon as I heard it was going to be licensed and receiving a special edition first volume, but I had no idea just what was in store from this seemingly miniscule decision in my life.

“Mistakenly Saving the Villain” changed my outlook on writing, characterization, and metaphysics itself. While I do believe the ending was a bit rushed, there are virtually no flaws to this brilliant, time-bending, emotional rollercoaster that was so good I read it TWICE before writing... more>> this review.

There are some complicated plot matters here, so I’ve included a very rough list of plot points here, mostly for my own memory. To begin, I’ll talk about characters. We have 2 main characters: Song Qingshi and Yue Wuhuan.

Song Qingshi (SQ) is the shou/uke and MC. Initially thrust into a transmigration scenario after living a regrettably short life with Lou Gherig’s disease in the modern world, he is tasked by the System to “save the protagonist shou”. This should be someone beautiful beyond compare who is destined for a miserable fate, but when he wakes in the cultivation realm to the visage of a beautiful s*ave, he is drawn to the teenager and mistakenly saves him. From there, SQ takes the young man to his Medicine King Valley to rehabilitate him and after many trials (and a 10 year time skip), they fall in love.

SQ is tenacious, unceasingly persistent, oblivious, and single-minded. He is such a relatable character for me personally because he fixates on what he loves (medicine, studying, breeding mice, Yue Wuhuan) and neglects all else but without malice. He experiences an extraordinary arc in development as he grows from an awkward, isolated cultivator who pursues medicine above all else to the point of loneliness and callousness into a partner and member of the community who recognizes that he has deficits and that these deficiencies can be ‘cured’. He is someone who believes that most things in life are doable albeit very challenging, and he genuinely wants to become better and slowly learns to expand this passion for improvement into wanting others to be their best selves, too. Discovering SQ’s origins near the end of the book wraps up his arc in that it provides the reader with a true starting point from which to view the past 100+ chapters of growth.

Yue Wuhuan (YW) is the gong/seme and ML. His story starts as a bedroom s*ave for the notorious Jin Feiren and his beginnings are truly tragic and content-warning-worthy. The author does a masterful job of portraying the external debauchery that YW is subjected to and how it contributes to this toxic buildup of internal self-loathing, resentment, hatred, and nihilism. It’s very clear that YW, even as SQ perceives him to be making improvements in his psyche, is not going to be willing to change or heal because deep down he does not believe he is worthy of healing–that “dirty” things can ever truly revert to “cleanliness”–and even if he was, the rest of the world that he and SQ exist in is so irredeemably filthy that it in itself is not worthy of help. YW experiences very gradual and fairly realistic character growth; he starts by masking his deficits in front of the person he likes, then slowly starts to realize that SQ genuinely does not hate him–and in fact loves him–despite his flaws which terrify and repulse everyone else.

YW’s change as a character is driven solely because of SQ, so rather than reading about a ML deciding to not destroy the world because he comes to discover, through the eyes of a romantic partner, that the world isn’t as bad as it seems, we instead are treated to a subversion of this trope wherein the yandere ML preserves only that which serves his partner’s happiness without fully understanding it and who lets go of his hatred only because there is literally no other way to save his partner. He doesn’t do it for himself, for his psychological healing; he accepts his hatred and only cuts it away because of mortal danger to the one thing he cherishes. It feels like his hatred and loathing has become a safety blanket, a constant across multiple lifetimes, so him destroying it is truly him becoming emotionally vulnerable for perhaps the first time ever and subjecting himself to the scariest possible solution. YW is obviously complex, less so for plot-derived reasons and more from an internal, psychological lens; learning about his origins is less important than it was for SQ because who he becomes reveals the “aha! That makes sense” moment that readers experience at the end of the book.

Now for the plot from a timeline perspective; MAJOR SPOILERS since the start of the timeline is revealed only as you read further into the book:

Spoiler
  • Millions of years ago, the celestial gods in the heavens presided over the World Tree, a tree upon which each fruit was a “small world” with its own universe. The gods were constantly fighting off the demons, who sought to corrupt these worlds and use the negative power created by corrupted worlds to defeat the gods.
  • Yue Wuhuan is the phoenix god and his domain is cultivating these worlds on the tree and helping them avoid collapse so that one day they may become stable and self-sufficient without help from the gods. He created a “system” to automate this process by way of designating a “tasker” to help guide the world’s progress.
  • One day, the entrance to the Underworld appeared and was leaking evil energy and Underworld Fire into one of these worlds, trying to corrupt it. The celestial emperor stopped up the leak by forging a normal rock into a beautiful stone and using it as a plug. Over time, humans and cultivators worshipped this stone and it accumulated positive merits and eventually cultivated to ascension. It took human form and became Song Qingshi. Yep. That’s why he’s literally as blank, unfeeling, and oblivious as a rock in the beginning.
  • YW noticed the emperor setting down this beautiful stone and, as it’s his hobby to collect stones and gems, he wanted it; he had never seen a stone as beautiful and eye-catching as this. He was at first depressed to learn that it “grew legs” and cultivated to human form after stopping the Underworld leak, and decided to “collect” this beauty once it grew a heart and could love him back.
  • SQ didn’t understand emotions or the ways of the other gods, so the emperor sent him to study in a private palace in the mountains. All day, for thousands and thousands of years, he studied and read and tried to understand; his only respite from this single-minded determination to know was the beautiful phoenix that liked to show off every day. It was the only color in his life, though he and the phoenix never met.
  • The demons, in their ever-persistent scheming against the celestial gods, decided on a new tactic to corrupt the worlds and thereby create more negative power for themselves to absorb. They “hacked” YW’s system, making it so that those who enter the world would have their memories wiped and be punished if they didn’t follow the plot, and stole a piece of soul from YW, then crafted an avatar in one of the worlds for him to exist in. Though everyone else thought the Phoenix was perfect, in fact, he had severe flaws: he was proud, mysophobic, unyielding, and obsessive. The demons used these flaws to design a custom hell for him, one in which he was fated to be defiled and betrayed unceasingly, never to find happiness. With his nature, he would generate hatred towards himself, others, and the world itself, and this hatred would be an infinite generator of negative power for the demons.
  • YW fell into the demons’ trap and forgot his true identity, experiencing thousands of incarnations of suffering. Meanwhile in the heavens, the World Tree and all its other worlds was slowly becoming corrupted without his influence. But because the system was hacked, the gods could only interfere and rescue him from within–they would have to become “taskers” and fight against the demons’ system to wake him up.
  • The demons used the gods’ weaknesses against them; all who entered became distracted by the pleasures the system could arrange for them in this world or became pawns of destruction used to antagonize YW. An Long (AL) was a friend of the Phoenix and a general in the heavens, but in trying to save YW he became tortured by his inner demons and his relationship with YW was twisted to the point where they were rivals and enemies in this world. He too was lost to the system.
  • SQ noticed that the phoenix hadn’t flown by his mountain in a while and, after learning that it was YW who was in a coma and whose piece of soul was being endlessly tortured in one of the small worlds, determinedly became a tasker to save the only piece of color in his blank existence.
  • YEAR 1 (I’m assigning this a number for the purposes of tracking the timeline) SQ’s first incarnation as a tasker was to save another character named Qu Yurong from a miserable fate, but upon seeing the poor YW, something in his was drawn to the boy and he mistakenly saved YW. Unfortunately in this incarnation, YW was blind and illiterate, and SQ–as a still-relatively-young former-rock–was mute. Still, through his authentic earnestness and transparently-innocent motives, SQ managed to gain the trust of YW–something no other tasker or god could do. While others got tangled up in their own happiness or hatred, SQ was uniquely dedicated solely to YW and the seed of obsession was planted.
  • Gradually, SQ learned about emotions and human experience from YW and YW learned to lessen his own self-loathing because SQ loved him. They eventually became Daoist Companions and YW, driven by his desire to get stronger for SQ, started cultivating the Way of the Sword, eventually taking the name Mo Yuan (MY).
  • It was good for many centuries–YW/MY was protecting people because he knew SQ didn’t want to see people hurt, and SQ practiced medicine and became an infamous doctor. Then fatefully, SQ found the original “protagonist” he was tasked to save, but Qu Yurong was too far gone and eventually killed himself. The system deemed SQ’s task a failure and punished him, causing him to have harmless but demonic markings on his body at the same time as a demonic plague was occurring that YW was fighting. The people believed SQ to be the culprit of the plague and tried to kill him while YW was away. When YW returned to his Daoist Companion, SQ died in his arms and he went mad, destroying everyone then being killed.
  • Before dying, YW caught a glimpse of the truth of this world and its system. It was too late for the MY incarnation of himself, so he created a trap formation that would prove this truth to his future incarnation. This formation would be activated 8000 years in the future.
  • I believe this is also around the same time that, while in limbo after dying in YW’s arms, SQ separates a small part of his soul to go to the modern world to “gain experience” while his main soul stays in the cultivation world for the next reincarnation with YW. The text in chapter 77 says, “Song Qingshi chose the world of immortal cultivation where the Phoenix’s power was strongest, and put down a lot of clues. He then cut out his heart and a part of his soul and threw these parts of himself into a simple small world to gain experience. He placed his body into the immortal realm to concentrate on cultivation and become the perfect vessel.” Prior to this separation in the first incarnation, SQ clearly learns to love. In the next reincarnation after the separation of heart and soul, SQ is heartless and unfeeling and completely focused on honing his medicine skills.
  • YEAR 7000 SQ reincarnates as the future Medicine King, he’s still stiff and doesn’t really know how to interact with people (because you can infer that he’s missing his heart, which was sent off to the modern world). Presumably, he has the same task to save so-and-so, though we know once his soul catches wind of YW he will want to save him.
  • YEAR 7200 SQ saves a half-demon child from death, not knowing that the child is An Long who imprints obsessively on him
  • YEAR 7500 SQ meets AL “by coincidence” (the system using AL’s weaknesses to make his love for SQ futile while also using AL to antagonize YW)
  • YEAR 8000 SQ is killed by AL who momentarily is compelled by demonic influence to lash out when SQ refuses to return AL’s feelings. Horrified by what he’s done, AL flees and SQ’s other vessel in the modern world dies at the same time, resulting in SQ coming back to life and “waking up” and believing himself to be a modern man who has transmigrated to the cultivation world. His system task is to “save the protagonist shou”. This is where the book actually begins.
  • SQ finds YW as a teenage s*ave in Jin Feiren’s courtyard and is immediately entranced. Believing the boy to be the so-called protagonist shou, he is determined to save him. He rescues YW and brings him to the Medicine King Valley to rehabilitate and study, and along the way they run into AL who’s unaware of SQ’s amnesia and the 3 of them (plus the sweetie pie white snake Xiao Bai) have lighthearted adventures while SQ slowly heals YW and learns more about himself and his developing feelings.
  • SQ frees YW from his s*ave mark and the two cultivate feelings towards one another. SQ feels that his current Dao Way, the Way of the Heartless, is crumbling due to his emotions towards YW. In his damaged condition, he successfully helps YW ward off the system’s abnormal lightning strike tribulation when YW reaches Foundation Building cultivation level, but SQ is left in a coma. YW is spurred to study like mad and travel to the ends of the cultivation realm to heal and revive SQ.
  • YEAR 8010 YW wakes SQ up from his coma and SQ’s soul is finally complete; the heart and piece of soul that he cut out and sent to the modern world which returned to him after AL killed him has finally become whole and his memories slowly come back. He is able to act on his feelings for YW and the two eventually decide to become Daoist Companions, with SQ as usual giving his all to result in YW’s happiness.
  • When AL spies the two kissing, his demonic side comes out and the system takes further control over him. YW discovers AL’s secret and like the yandere he is–like the system has arranged for it to be–he feeds AL’s toxic obsession while displaying his own deranged need to possess SQ.
  • AL disappears and the happy couple gets closer, though SQ has recognized that he will need to change his Dao Way since the Way of the Heartless is cracking under his love for YW. YW would rather die than let SQ experience the pain of his cultivation breaking, so SQ secretly makes preparations to face the system and hand off his cultivation power to YW before it’s completely destroyed.
  • SQ knows the system is using AL as a pawn and goes to face off AL. AL ends up going berserk and the two stab each other; SQ is killed and his soul is whisked off by the system and AL sees himself forcibly revived. Because SQ failed, another tasker is sent to deal with YW and tells YW that his fiancee is dead. YW awakens his hatred and tries to kill himself on Inextinguishable Peak but the system’s twisted hand of fate keeps his soul alive by saving him so that his misery can never end.
  • In limbo, SQ sees that the system is in the process of breaking down; golden merit power appears to be wearing it down, causing the errors in bestowing and managing the tasks. He realizes the truth of the solution: only with this most pure and benevolent Golden Light of Merit can the system be defeated and YW can be truly rescued. This is why he has always subconsciously been helping people via medicine and why he even started a school to pass on his life-saving knowledge. Over time and with the butterfly effect, these little actions lead to a massive accumulation of merits, and he’s going to need a ton of them to break the system and save YW.
  • YEAR 11000 It’s been 3000 years and SQ wakes up in another reincarnation with again no memory except that he’s looking for someone; the system is almost completely broken and his task is just “eliminate this world’s villain”. He’s found by a great-great grandson of YW’s assistant and brought to the now-prosperous Medicine King Valley sect. YW is the most powerful immortal in the world and has multiple avatars, but he wants to leave the old, dirty him in the past, so when he senses SQ’s awakening he makes every effort to disguise himself and their past together while getting closer to SQ.
  • The pair inevitably rekindle their feelings even though SQ has only a faint inkling that he’s met YW before and that YW is special. The two of them (plus the now-giant sweetie cutie pie baby white snake) go on an adventure to save the grandson’s best friend, who incidentally is now the system’s protagonist and “right answer”. In their adventures, they stumble upon YW/MY’s formation, the one that he made after the first SQ incarnation died and he glimpsed the truth for his future self.
  • The formation allowed YW and SQ to relive their first life together, when SQ was mute and YW became Mo Yuan. After dying in the formation, SQ was issued an option from the system to “restart” and immediately chose to relive the previous incarnation. He found after hundreds of tries that the task was a Catch 22–an impossible problem–and that either A) he would save Qu Yurong and YW, with his obsessive nature, would sabotage the saving, causing SQ to fail and die again or B) he would save YW as he always was want to do, but Qu Yurong would die as a result of not being saved from his miserable fate. Still, SQ chose to try to do the impossible and save both every single time. And in every lifetime, he loved YW. He realized that his task to “find the right answer” (save Qu Yurong) was truly unsolvable, and was resolute in pursuing the “wrong answer” (YW’s happiness) without ever giving up.
  • YW was able to see SQ choosing him over and over in the formation and his insecurities surrounding being the “wrong answer” and his obsession with needing to eliminate all other “answers” were assuaged. Although SQ had managed to heal him partway with his authentic nature and genuine trust in YW, YW had to heal himself the rest of the way by leaving a formation for himself that would allow him to truly and deeply acknowledge SQ’s dedication and love and accept it as truth.
  • The two of them realize that the system can only function with YW’s hatred, though a large part of its power comes from AL who has escaped in the midst of a demon plague uprising. The system is losing its grasp on the world and fierce demons and malevolent energy are sweeping the world. As it power weakens, SQ’s previously-wiped memories flood back and he’s enlightened.
  • The only way to destroy the system and wake up YW was through the most benevolent and pure power against the demons: golden merit. SQ was able to lay down clues and subconsciously work towards this solution of farming merits in each incarnation. The huge amount of merit he gained from saving lives as a doctor and spreading his knowledge of medicine to future doctors was able to invade the system and cause errors and weaknesses in it, slightly sabotaging it each time. Finally, in this incarnation, he is able to get YW to free AL from the system’s demonic influence with a sword crafted of Golden Light of Merit. It contained all the millions of merits obtained directly and through the butterfly effect of SQ’s actions, and was enough to defeat AL and reveal his true celestial form, after which he returned to the heavens.
  • The world was rid of the plague but YW was still not free; the system would always have its hold on him if he didn’t heal this one last part of his heart demons: hatred. Leaning into the perspective of his beloved SQ–and in the light of almost killing SQ with the black hatred that spewed from him as he fought AL–he extinguished the soul lamps that he had been keeping and torturing for 3000 years, and with each one he let go, a shackle was released from his heart, and his beauty mark disappeared. At last, the seal containing him in this filthy world was broken and the two awoke in their true celestial selves.
  • The gods who escaped the system such as AL sealed their memories, and when the Phoenix awoke from his coma–his soul now intact after millennia of torture at the hands of the demons–SQ expected that the popular and charismatic YW would want to seal his memories too. After experiencing so many things in the thousands of years with YW and by himself, SQ was no longer stony and heartless and he felt desperately lonely where before he felt indifferent. He cried and tried his best to accept YW’s decision but was surprised to find YW at his door, having chosen to hold onto all the memories–the good, bad, filthy, and ~dirty~ ;)
  • YW rerouted the small world’s trajectory so that the friends they made in it could live normally. The two of them restored their Daoist Companion bond and got married. The extras gave a happy ending for the original “shou protagonist” Bai Zihao and he got his own peac*ck yao god husband. YW’s beauty mark canonically comes back every time he gets pent up and SQ uses it as a timer for when it’s time to stop studying and go assist his husband. They adopt Xiao Bai and the snake cultivates to human form, eventually becoming a very s*upid but loveable soldier. All the couples apparently use the small worlds for sexy roleplay times, and apparently the beastman world where SQ gets bunny ears and a bunny tail is a favorite. Truly, this is a Happy Ending.

MSTV is a beautiful read full of action, adventure, horror, mystery, and timey-wimey goodness. The characters are realistically written with clearly a lot of research into psychology and medicine going into the writing, and every time I found a plot hole, I ended up filling it in through analysis of the text and careful notes. I really connected with Song Qingshi obviously >w< as someone who is neurodivergent who has had to make conscious efforts to learn about expressing oneself and accepting suffering. There were also some excellent parallels to Buddhist philosophy such as characters gradually working through the Four Noble Truths and coming to recognize and acknowledge suffering, cease the root causes of suffering, and work towards living a life that prevents suffering. Reading this book 2.5 times already, it doesn’t get old and there are more clues and puzzle pieces I am able to pick up each time I go back.

I highly recommend this book for those who love a balanced, engaging, meaningful plot as well as those who are like myself and Song Qingshi and love anything they can take notes and reflect on XD

And I hope anyone who reads this book or this review is able to genuinely believe within themselves that almost nothing is impossible; where there’s a will, there’s a way, even if it goes unseen on the breath of a butterfly’s wings. <<less

I kept thinking that I would come back and finish this novel. But I was wrong. So Im just gonna drop this novel.

I felt like the story wasn't moving. Many problems were getting resolved but then it would keep repeating. I also kept getting annoyed at the bestfriend. I dont remember why. I read this novel about 5 months ago.

Spoiler

I also despise love triangles a lot. I can read novels where the best friend has feelings for the MC. But only if the MC was making it clear to the best friend that it wasn't reciprocated. The MC in this novel was very dense in terms of understanding feelings.

[collapse]

People have told me to keep reading, that it gets better. But I can't. I gave myself a headache trying to continue this novel. I literally had to give up on reading ancient novels for a long time after reading this novel. Thats how boring and uninteresting I found this novel.

No shade to anyone who likes it. Maybe if I kept reading I would've liked it. <<less

again I am writing a more negative review, because I find it easier to point out aspects I dislike in novels rather than those I like. My focus when I read romance BL is the romance and the two main characters, MC and ML. In this aspect I find this novel disappointing. I honestly expected much more considering the ratings.

The major reason for my rating is the dynamic between MC and ML. Which to me is described entirely by tropes, that are used a lot. Tropes aren't inherently bad, I... more>> mean everyone has some they like and some they dislike. But they are lazy writing, although as an author you can interpret them innovatively or subvert them, which the author sadly doesn't do.

The tropes:

    • MC is a genius, which means he is academically good and smart, but that inevitably makes him socially inept and puts his EQ at a minus score. At the same time though the ML has to always be better than the MC, so the ML is not only even smarter than the MC, but he is also socially really talented with a high EQ.
    • MC has no romantic or s*xual or otherwise positive feelings toward the ML, so the author has to create a reason for MC to repeatedly contact ML (aka the system task). So MC helps ML for himself essentially without any feelings. ML is insecure about MC being so nice toward him, because he realizes that MC doesn't have any feelings toward him nor reason to help him. So ML idolizes MC as being a selfless angel.
    • ML has a dark past, so he needs healing from the MC. During this healing ML discoveres and develops a possesivenes and s*xual desire for MC. But -oh no- MC is sooo pure and innocent (ML and the author join hands at infantilizing MC), he doesn't know anything about s*x and desire. The entire relationship between the two develops from pure s*xual and possesive desire from the ML (no romance). But ML has to "hold back" (apparently so he doesn't attack and s*xual ab*se the MC? It's described in extreme detail everytime), because he can't "defile" MC with his desire.

this was super promising. I liked how things were going, the emotional bond that was budding between our main pair was so sweet, so cathartic to read. The mental anguish of the ml, his self disgust and his fledgling hopes made me emotional. I was getting invested in the story. Then came the ten year long coma OUT OF NOWHERE. Like who even does that? Its been only thirty chapters since the story began and there was a time leap???? I checked out other reviews and apparently there will be... more>> an amnesia arc too. Look, these can be done in a good way but I can't stand it thirty chapters in. <<less

Note to self: Don't reread.

I remember trying to read this twice before when it wasn't complete. I dropped it the first time because I really hated what happened to ML. Forgot about it. Picked it up a second time, not realizing I had already dropped it because I reached a certain point that made me go "waiiiit a minute I've read this before"

Went on reading it before dropping it again because of certain things happening in the plot.

Came across this once it was completed and read it and fell in... more>> awe again with the translations and story flow and writing.

Ungil I really couldn't take it anymore and skipped to the end. I do not like this book but maybe it's because it's just not for me. But I can't give it a low rating for it because I recognize that it's such a good story, it's just that I couldn't take the amount of character whump. It has a sweet ending I guess. I just never want to pick this up again. <<less

S tier novel, if not higher.

The author (eventually at some point) made the comment that they wrote the novel in mind of going against stereotypes and that they wouldn't write characters without a purpose, which does prove itself to me at least, by the end of the story.

Stereotypes and clichés are unavoidable, but it all comes down to your own execution. Aside from breaking certain tropes, it gave also certain clichés a breath of fresh air.

The story gets better as you advance. The characters grew on me and I wanted... more>> to indulge and protect them, ALL of them including the 2nd ML that I disliked at first.

And here a disclaimer: All sorts of vile sexual, emotional and physical ab*se will be part of mainly ML's life and it might set of triggers so read with care. This is also one of the rarer main characters who had been 'defiled' to this extend (which in itself isn't a bad thing, from a reader's aspect over general chinese novels and its overall obsession with sterile levels of purity).

The traumas are written realistically, the mental illnesses were convincing and relatable.

Normally, the plot and romance would be set apart, giving room to growth each at a different time. However author wove both plot and romance together so well, you don't feel like there was a lack of plot nor romance. From the beginning til end, there was nothing BUT plot and romance.

The MC is a sweet sweet sweet bun, a bit ditzy clumsy in emotional intelligence but highly diligent and steadfast.

ML, despite the trauma he's forced to bear, is extremely radiant in his own ways.

Despite being a yandere, he never tried to forcefully acquire the other's affection. It nevertheless, is an obsession, but MC and him both want to fix it because both recognize the unhealthy aspect it.

He has a measured level of violence and wouldn't extend harm onto unrelated and innocent people. Different kinds of wrong-doings deserve different kinds of punishments, at times with a chance of redemption. This benevolence is also an extension of MC's patient guidance and what little goodness that remained deep buried within the ML.

Side characters all had their impact either on the story or for growth of the characters, simultaneously also meet their retributions or find their happy endings.

Conclusive, decisive and rounded story telling.

SN: Great translations and explanations by Chrysanthemum Garden's sleepy 'lil 'shroom.

Spoiler

For this to extend to godhood and celestial talk, I'm quite impressed that the author made generally unrelatable beings, relatable. Though, towards the end, it muddled the sterile purity trope through. The 'defiled' body wasn't real but the memory was. The ML accepted that dark and dirty past and moves on.

Not saying I wish he was better of remaining partially broken with that physical and emotional trauma, but it lost a bit of the genuine hurt that build his character, if you know what I mean. Given, the ML uses also that experience later on as growth, it doesn't change the fact the author tried to clean wash his physical being and put it aside and a terrible nightmare or simulation.

After all, their love relationship developed in this 'simulation' and it's not like the woke up and walked separate ways....I suppose that's my sole complaint, as well as conflict.

What I loved about the novel was how deeply the transmigration system plot got. It was thoroughly explored and even got exposed to the ML.

Gotta admit I'm fed up with protagonists hiding the truth of their background from their lovers (especially those who trade the target's sincerity for system points, that's to me, exploitation; not that the MC does it since ML is the wrong target as depicted in the synopsis). Not many are this upfront about their transmigration and reason around their said-target. This misunderstanding helped further strengthen the couple's bonds.

The true villains:

The true nature of demons has been briefed to us but the whole idea of an entire race being inherently evil here is rather subjective.

It was the celestial beings that were more powerful and oppressive, sealing the demons away. They made the gods face their own desires and evil, meaning the gods were also flawed in a sense.

This is another aspect which makes this psychological novel great, making perfect beings face their own imperfections and not simply set two camps and have those two fight it out. I really would've loved to see more about the demonic races, having just finished 'Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know' and it's concept of equilibrium.

Too beautiful. This novel tells the tale of an unrelenting love. I'm still crying and whenever I look back at the story I read, I will continue to cry.

Their love runs so deep and is filled with a lot of emotions. It is so sweet, but also so very bitter. The way the author wrote the story is very enchanting. The MC and ML been through a lot. They loved but there are always doubt. It was a love that was so imperfect, to the point of perfection. The author... more>> depicted the human emotions so wonderfully...

Surely, their love is one of the most beautiful thing I have read. Insecurities led them to their countless suffering, but MC tried his hardest and never gave up. The ML did well for not giving up either. Then, they overcame the one thing that brought them down.

Finally, they found happiness after a long, long battle.

This story has a lot of dark things, but it made the beautiful things even more vivid. The author did an absolutely wonderful job. <<less

My favorite story, and I can't describe how much I love it. Everything about it is perfect. MC, ML, side characters, everyone is so multi-dimensional. I can't even say whom I love more. Song Qingshi, probably. I love everything about his personality. The plot is amazing. Every new revelation broke my heart. Even the last chapter made me cry, thanks God there are extras. This novel is really unique and the one I will surely re-read.

I love it. I love it. I love it. Important things have to be said thrice.

It was painful, it made me cry, it made me laugh, it made me die inside. But, I love this book so so much. I feel empty now that I've finished it. I would suggest reading everything to understand. I wish there was more. MC at first comes of as naïve and oblivious but yes although he is, his character is so much more than that. And he's basically so so precious. The ML is... more>> also wonderfully written. His behaviour and tendencies are not just brushed off, instead they're properly explained by the end of the novel. I love this book so much. I didn't expect to love it this much. I was hesitant to read it because of the pain ML goes through but... it was all worth it.

ALSO. Please. Do not leave the novel halfway. The author knows what she's doing. <<less

First, this novel deserve a 4.5 and HIGHER. 💓 Second, those who rated this novel 4 and below without even reading the WHOLE story is.. UGH! I mean, realllllyyyy!?!?!? I don't think you have the right to rate this at all. You have to read the entire story in order to understand why things happen.

Third, Song Qingshi is not dumb, I repeat he's NOT dumb. There's a reason for him being like that which I am not gonna spoil. So people calling him dumb and other names.. Lol. Seriously, are we... more>> reading the same novel? Ahhhhh! You're on chapter what? 1? 39? 40? 53? Oh please *eye roll*

Fourth, the plot twists are really good and interesting, so please don't drop it, don't give up!!!! Finish until the end.

Fifth, this is one of the most satisfying ending I've ever read. So please give this a chance. You will laugh, cry and heal with the characters. This is HIGHLY recommended! <<less

I started this book thinking it was going to be a light, funny transmigration novel - but while it does have lots of humor, it's also much darker and more serious than I imagined a novel like this could be.

It comments on trauma, healthy and unhealthy relationships, persistence, not just blindly doing what others in authority tell you, the need for second chances, the power of a helping hand, the value of standing up for what you believe in, how good communities can sometimes be built on cruel deeds and... more>> vats of blood. Honestly, this novel covers so much, and I found myself both laughing and crying through chapters. The characters are so beautifully defined that their stories and personalities feel so real.

While the wrapper story is not one of my favorites, it grew on me and did tie everything together very nicely. I felt the ending came too quickly, but that might just be my unwillingness to see the last of this world that the author has so carefully crafted.

This is definitely a story I'd happily reread - there are so many little details and connections I missed on my first reading (the reader/translator comments are great at pointing some of them out, but I feel like I still need another reading to really savour those details) <<less

Seriously such a great and underrated read! It was such an enjoyable experience that I had to make an account to leave this review!

First off, listen to all the positive reviews that were left in this story! This is a story that you have to read from beginning to end. NOTHING IS A COINCIDENCE!! If you think there's a plot hole or details that won't matter later... it will. The author has a really clever way to intricately tie things from the past to the present. It's a very rewarding... more>> novel to read and the ending (although I did wish for a longer epilogue) was satisfying. Don't judge a book by its cover, this novel might start of a little cliche with common transmigration/wuxia tropes, but it's got a lot more layers to it trust me.

This is a novel that deals with heavy topics so pay attention to the tags (the r*pe is not between the couple). I would say this series is almost on the same angst and trigger level of 2ha, so please be mindful before going in and don't expect all sunshine and rainbows. It'll be quite a painful journey with a lot of heart ache, but there is a happy ending that is worth it! MC is the definition of unconditional love and it was so impactful that my eyes watered a bit ngl.

Another great thing is the amount of self-awareness the author has. A lot of common BL and transmigration tropes get addressed later on in the story. The characters also have strong development too and actually recognize their own faults and learn to confront them. The author did their research on mental psychology and trauma and once it gets explained as the story progresses, the actions and thoughts of the characters will begin to make a lot of sense.

This is definitely a story for a more mature audience level. If you're expecting a guilty pleasure, relaxing type of read with lots of snu snu, then you might want to hold off on this novel for now. However, if you're down for the ride, prepare your heart and mind. If you're a 2ha survivor like me, this is probably going to give you war flashbacks.

Also... Song Qingshi is baby. I will not accept any slander on his character. He's probably one of the most interesting MC i've come across and his storyline just keeps getting better towards the very end. He isn't going to be your Mary Sue that gets things right from the get go. He has flaws and there are times you might get frustrated with him, but it's what makes him a very unique, lovable, and admirable character. You can't help but want to root for him and the ML to find happiness. All the side characters are great as well and very memorable and get good endings for the most part.

10/10 for me and definitely going on my list of all time favorites. It's something I can't wait to reread in the future! <<less

A male yandere that won't hurt, imprison or coerce!

Low EQ High IQ naïve (?) never ever ever giving up MC!

Oh boy... I liked I liked I liked.

At first the tags put me off but months passed by and I just glanced at the title and started reading, I forgot about the tags. There's no explicit description of any sort, so I particularly found everything bearable, the authors writing or the translation also is not the type that try to force out the feelings of the readers so even though I... more>> am aware of the things that happened with the ML and others characters I didn't feel much angst.

The MC way of thinking is a little unusual, the ML has psychological problems, this is an unusual, a little mysterious, very well ended healing story.
