Everyone in their social circle knew that the Third Miss of the Wei family had a cold personality and preferred to keep to herself. No one expected that after going to the Wang family for a business discussion, she would bring back a young inexperienced girl. The entire Wei household became curious, and even the butler couldn’t help but give the young girl extra glances.

At the table, Third Miss’s red lips moved slightly, her expression calm: “Is it good?”

The young girl timidly raised her head to look at her, voice weak: “Yes, it’s good.”

Before finishing her words, her face had already turned red.

Third Miss laughed softly, her cold demeanor melting away into indescribable radiance, leaving the young girl momentarily stunned.

Later—

In the bedroom, Third Miss held the young girl, feeling a sting on her neck: “Is it good?”

The young girl held her tightly, face still slightly flushed, but speaking without stuttering now, she smiled: “It’s good.”

Closer to 2.5. maybe one day NU will let me give the novels a.5 star but not today.

Review contains minor/moderate spoilers, if you decide to read, consider yourself warned.

Imagine a situation where a barely legal (around 18 year old) girl who's an orphan with no other family or support group, no money, who barely finished primary education and is a servant at somebody's household who gets beaten up and coveted by a creepy man in the household - is suddenly brought back by a rich, older person who wants the... more>> girl to have their baby? Does the situation sound super manipulative and shady to you? If yes, congratulations! You're a normal human being!

The start of this novel and the reason Wei Hui picked up Shiyi almost made me drop the novel, I suppose that's why Wei Hui's age is left even more ambiguously in this novel, so at least we can pretend the age gap isn't that big and meaningful. Insane as it might sound, I don't hate Wei Hui, she seems like a cool character by herself but when it comes to her relationship with Shiyi, you can see the red flag from the space. Ironically, the biggest dub/non con moment in this story was initiated by Shiyi, possibly in a futile attempt to make it less creepy but it's a futile attempt imo.

Of course, following the path of cnovels, the most reasonable way to give some agency back to Shiyi is
Spoiler

by making her have a rich person background and/or a genius. The author somewhat does both in the most convoluted way possible while still making Shiyi depends on Wei Hui it's messed up tbh.

[collapse]

I keep thinking of how the red flags could be improved. Maybe if Shiyi is a bit older... or has another support system she could rely on... or maybe if she's a secret super genius who's bidding her time to take over the world... maybe, maybe. But Wei Hui specifically mentions in the novel that Shiyi is chosen because of who she is, so congratulations Miss Wei, I can't even justify that.

The novel isn't all bad though. The pacing is nice, the drama is great and I love the office politics. The ending is rather abrupt and dissatisfactory, since we also don't get any extras, but it's alright for your casual red flag wlw read. <<less

I liked it. The pacing is good. The story is sweet, sometimes angsty but ultimately sweet. The plot is good. It's steady, maybe even too steady, as in not too sad nor too exciting for me. But that's why I like it. It's reliable. Just when things can get much heavier and darker, the conflict gets solved in the next few chapters.

It just needs a bit more flair, a bit more depth. Some elements just "scratched the surface".

This is like a shiny polished stone. Not quite a gem but a... more>> very pretty stone. <<less
