A 34-year-old NEET otaku, chased out from his house by his family, found that his life is reaching a dead end. He then recalled that his life could actually have been much better if he had made better choices in the past.

Just when he was at the point of regret, he saw a truck moving at fast speed, and three high schoolers in its path. Mustering all the strength he had, he tried to save them and ended getting run over by the truck, quickly ending his life.

The next time he opened his eyes, he is reincarnated to a world of sword and magic as Rudeus Greyrat. Born to a new world, a new life, Rudeus decided that, “This time, I’ll really live my life to the fullest with no regret!” Thus starts the journey of a man yearning to restart his life.

decided to reread this again after several years because I just learned that it finally had an anime deal to it.

ecchi/pe*vert and harem I'm fine with (in context of what I am about to compare it to). It's been years since i've sworn off to reading works like these that has these tags.

but the worst of it all is the straight up pe*o MC written up here. I might even say that this might be one of the earliest works i've read that made me avoid novels with ecchi &... more>> harem tags on them.

i dont know if I want to congratulate the author for depicting the perfect creepy pe*vert with loli/pedo taste, if it came from imagination or experience. Either way, it made me remember this being also one of the earlier novels that trained me to skip/skim read past the depraved ecchi-ness of the MC.

being reincarnated made him lose to his other MCs from other novels of being beta, but in return become some pe*o loving MC? This made us choose who the lesser evil is, and it was easy. The beta, no-logic, nakama power wins by a damn landslide

a novel/author that tried to underplay AND normalize pe*ophilia <<less

A classic, yes but this is just overrated. I would only rate it 4/10. MC seems very dumb to me. I mean compared to that other girl (Nanahoshi) who got transported to that world, MC does seem lacking in the brain department. And ofc, dude is very disgusting. This gotta be the first novel where I just felt disgusted by a MC this much

I remember reading while back and dropped it.

Main problem with this is the MC is basically a pe*o.

I don't remember if it was this WN or the LN (or both) but basically the opening before the incident of his transportation brought things to question.

... more>> Then the stuff that happened to the redhead girl early on.

Yea.

MC is a pe*o and I don't even know how it got an anime. I am guessing they cutting all that pe*o stuff out as they kinda censored some stuff from first episodes before his transportation.

If you have shota or loli fantasies then I guess this is the right novel for you otherwise.

By the way, I am unsure how it picks up. I dropped it around the point of the third party member (the dude that joins em, not to spoil heavy) after certain events. But all the sexualizing of minors in this series early on left a bad taste for me to see if it even improves a little later. (Which I doubt, since the first girl is basically a perma loli mage at this point and even if he ages up, there will still be that material judging by harem tag so yea, I will pass.) <<less

I've never really read any sort of novels before but this one certainly caught my eyes after hearing people praising it. Coincidentally, I was reading the manga adaption so I thought ''why the heck not''.

One of the best, if not, the best damn isekai novel that's ever been written. Honestly thought it was some type of typical isekai and I was proven wrong so badly. Amazing character developements, not all witty wuss bullsh*t like ''I have plot armor''. Rudues, our main character, is an amazing magician from a young age.... more>> You're probably thinking that he's OP as hell since he's the lead, right? He is indeed strong, but there are people that could literally kill him in one second effortless. Though being a huge pe*vert, he knows how to keep his manners in front of his friends and family. A man who loves his family very much, that can go to the extents of sacrificing his own him no matter who the opponent was.

I can't emphasise how much you should read this. 5/5

P.S School arc was probably the best arc for me imo. <<less

If the entire novel would have been designed similarly to volumes 1-6 it would have been perfect.

Unfortunately the story gets completely derailed by a redundant school life arc (volumes 7-11) immediately following this amazing section. The amount of relevant information that these four volumes have for the overarching plot can be condensed down to a single volume. They are absolutely stuffed to the brim with pointless filler fluff. To further explain how badly this arc is constructed, here is a brief description of the plot shift: ... more>>
Spoiler

After volume 6, the story moves from being about the struggles of being teleported into a hostile environment and then traveling across several continents in order to return to the main character's homeland to the main character going to a magic school to fix his erectile dysfunction. Seriously?

[collapse]

Unfortunately the story never recovers from this terrible section. The character development on the main heroines is never the same again.

Spoiler

While Sylphy is definitely grown a bit immediately after volumes 1-6 ends, not much else happens after she gets pregnant.

In volumes 1-6 Eris is developed a ton, and this period of time happens to be one of the best developmental phases for a side character that I have ever encountered in a light novel. We see her transform from a bratty noble princess into a warrior who has to overcome her inner emotional struggles as they travel the world. Then she is almost entirely forgotten for ten volumes till the author decided to bring back her and Roxy as yes-men (or I guess women in this case) wives who are completely shallow with almost no function other than to have s*x with Rudeus as a plot device. Their personalities have been reduced to nothing but the most prominent behaviors that they exhibited in the developmental volumes.

In short, his wives are transformed from unique characters to generic female archetypes commonly found in other novels of the same genre.

[collapse]

The score that I gave this novel can be described like this:

  • Volumes 1-6: 5/5
  • Volumes 7-11: 1/5
  • Volumes 12+: 3/5
Volumes 1-6 are what I compare every other swords and magic light novel to when searching for decent reading material. The only gripe that I have with this section is that it is too short. In my opinion, the author should have extended the traveling arc through volume 11. This easily could have been accomplished by making a simple yet major change to what a character does at the beginning of volumes 7:
Spoiler

Eris doesn't go away for 10 volumes.

[collapse]
The way that the author paces himself with the story honestly worked best with the dynamics of adventuring. It does not work with the school arc. All of the critical characters could have been encountered without the school arc, and the character development for the main side characters would not have gone as far downhill.

Spoiler

To further expand on this: Rudeus should not have married Sylphy and Roxy. And he wouldn't have if the traveling arc was continued. They were past characters that he only somewhat interacted with for an entire volume each. He grew up with Eris and encountered many hardships with her for four lengthy volumes. The entire situation where Eris just gets up and leaves under the premise of "needing to get stronger" seems completely forced and unnecessary for the progression of the story.

[collapse]

In case it isn't obvious yet, I am very salty that Eris, objectively the most developed side character in the entire series, was thrown into the tr*sh for ten volumes. When she returns her previous depth never comes close to being realized again.

The first 6 volumes are so well written that if you're interested you can just read them exclusively. There is even somewhat of a conclusion. <<less

It's sad how some can only see the MC as a pe*verted loser.... which he was but the story transitioned it so well that you can appreciate his growth as a character and his commitment to his goals and really wraps it up in a way that can bring you to tears.

setting aside the MC the side characters are also a colorful bunch both in hair and in attitude all bringing something to the table that really allow you to sympathize with them and understand why they did what they... more>> did and its always heart wrenching to see some of them go....

and you really can hate the antagonist cause he is a piece of work to the point that its amazing how much you wanna kill the antagonist yourself~

A novel spanning about 20+ volumes. It tells us about a story of a reincarnated person. I will be as vague as possible to prevent spoilers.

It is not a perfect story. It shows us the story of a person. It may not be the best story there is. It has its ups and downs. Some parts may feel dull and boring. It is lacking that action feel in the beginning and middle parts. It may annoy your morals-it being harem and all.

Like I said it is not a perfect story.... more>> Even after finishing that 20+ volumes, you may feel that it ended to fast. The battle isn't finish yet. This novel is about the life of Rudeus Greyrat. It is not about the world, not his decendants. It tells us about about the story of his birth till his death. Why should you read this super duper long novel?

The best point about this novel is not the story, not the action, not the sexy time but the character development. Some might hate the harem tag. Don't worry, this isn't one of those novels with dense boys the magically gets all the girls. <<less

THE best anime novel I've ever read, and I began reading light novels back when Tokyo Pop was still around, so that is saying quite something.

The world is great, I mean, WOW, the world is actually an interesting place!, whereas most fantasy worlds in anime are just a means to an end for the MC to get a harem, or fight stuff or whathever, this world is actually interesting, and logical and detailed, I was as interested in knowing more about it as reading about our MC.

The characters are great... more>> I dont really remember anyone not interesting or who wasnt well developed, the romance is a high point and this IS a harem, but a harem done right.

Tired of endless harems that go nowhere? look no further, this ends at (SPOILER) the end of our MC's life, and we even get to know (some) of his children, his family, etc... it doesnt end at "which gurl should I bang".

Tired of useless, spineless, lucky MC's?, checked, our MC WILL get strong, he WILL get a harem, but none will come cheap and he definitely wont come out of the story as the top dog of the world, he will struggle, he WONT get a cheat (I repeat he WONT get a cheat), he will face strong enemies in a world were strength and stregth levels make sense, he will suffer, he will risk life and limb (SPOILER: literally), so when he does become a reasonable badass you do feel he has earned and worked for it.

The ending, MAN, that ending, I cried, it was like saying goodbye to a good fiend.

Look, I could go on, just go and read it, alright? dont listen to those that make it sound like the MC is pe*verted, okay, he kind of his, I mean, if you consider softcore ecchi pe*verted or you cant stand to watch something on the level of Love Hina, then yeah stay away, for that matter, I would suggest you dont dig very deeply in the anime world, for everyone else, this is a must. <<less

This novel is one of the first isekai and WN in general that i've read. So some bias may exist, but I still believe this novel is in my top10 (of all japanese WN and LNs that i've read and i've read a lot). At this point, my review may not be needed anymore as many other review before me has been here far longer and most people may have read this. But, because my love to this novel, I decided to put some of my thought into it.

WARNING POTENTIAL... more>> SPOILER

Character 5/5

Spoiler

The main focus, Rudeus is a tr*sh in his previous life. He did something that most people think as disgusting. Even so, it's there are more twisted character out there, and IMO how morally bad a character is, it shouldn't effect their rating so, the other people that shouldn't judged this novel solely by his shortcomings. But rather how the author potray the character, and his interaction to the other character and the world. And this Muhsoku Tensei succeed splendidly. As I said before, the main character Rudeus starts as a failure. His perversion and trauma towards the world outside is what leads him to his death and this doesn't change after his reincarnation, not immediately. Roxy is the one who helps his outside world trauma, but his perversion needs a longer time to be corrected or rather 'tamed'. By the time the story begins to show the final plot, Rudeus has changed from this pe*verted NEET into a proper loving father. Not a perfect father, but a good father who thinks about his family first. This doesn't only happen to the MC. The other character, also experienced the same changes. The characters helps each other on their growth. Even for characters that wasn't given much show time, they have their own ego, their own priority. This is what many writers forgot, that each character is their own protagonist in their own life (You too).

[collapse]

World Building 4/5

Spoiler

The world is big, but not necessarily full of information. The world is expanded little by little as the character adventures. The things that are explained are not wasted information. It may not seems making any sense at the short run, but will at the later stage. The world itself, while not completely original, is unique. There are no useless game like menu. Magic and skills (not the game counterpart) is explained logically. This makes the MC very strong (but not like other isekai MC). While he has that laplace factor, he also did an efficient way of training which explained why he is that strong. This means the MC is strong but not special and his students are much stronger than the norm (albeit not as strong as him).

[collapse]

Plot and Story Progression 4.5/5

Spoiler

This is, I think the hardest part to get right in a WN. Unlike a normal Novel or even LN, most WN are written as a hobby by the author. This often leads to story that proceed as they pleased. However, this is not really the case in Mushoku Tensei. I will not say that the pace and climax in each volumes are perfect, but they are above standard. The pace is reasonable for a WN. Not too fast that you got overloaded, nor too slow that it bore you. Most of the things that the characters do will have impact to their story and development. Seemingly unnecessary things may actually be something important.

[collapse]

Story 4.5/5

Spoiler

This story is a story about a person named Rudeus Greyrat. The story main problem starts not that early. The author gave the reader a chance to know about the MC and peoples around him especially the important ones. Build his relationship with the other character enough so that you can understand his feeling without feeling forced when the time comes. Then the mass teleportation happened. This what leads things goes awry. Things that happened mostly is because the mass teleportation and hitogami at the later stages. There are many 'antagonist' that stood against the MC. But here is what I love from Mushoku Tensei. The antagonist aren't that bad. I mean, bad people do exist (like s*ave dealer). But they have reason. Even the main source of problem, Hitogami, only tries to save himself. There are even antagonist that simply is in different faction and the MC actually really hate to fight them. This is more real, than stories that just throw out villains for the hero to fight. The story ends a few years after the last fight. I think it resolve just right as the MC is what the story about. He already changed to the good. No more enemies that poses real threat to his family. No more things that worth to be told about Rudeus Greyrat. It is time to pass the baton to the next generation. In a sense, Mushoku Tensei is a prologue to the main story of the fight between Orsted and Hitogami, like the author said.

[collapse]

Conclusion : Mushoku Tensei is a story about a man that changes over time. Between him and things that threatens his and his beloved lives. Not about saving the world, or any other nonsense, it is about his own small world. He may have short comings, but who doesn't? This may be one of the best isekai and one of the few harem story that I approve.

Note: This is my first review that I wrote. Things may be confusing because of my wordings or the way I explain it. If said things happened, I'm sorry, and hope my next review will be much better. <<less

First of all, I need to say that this novel is one of the best I have ever read but it has one thing that keep people away from it. The main character is too pe*verted, if you can overcame that, then you will see how wonderful this novel is.

Now I am going to explain why I think this is so good:

    • The story is very well planned and it is also very good. In the first volumes you will only watch the adventures of the MC in this new world but when something unexpected happened the story will begin to take form in a very good way with an interesting antagonist. It also has a lot of plot twist that were amazing and I really liked them.
    • The MC is not overpowered, he will work hard to develop his skills and get more powerful but he is not going to be the hero who saves the world like in the majority of other s*upid isekais. He also have a very good development.
    • The worldbuilding is extremely well done.
    • The battles are very entertaining, they are so good because the characters use the brain besides the power they have (strategic battles) and the length of them is perfect.
    • The best point of why this novel is so good for me is because the characters. They have all an amazing development, they grow with their experiencies and they have reasons to do the things they do.
    • Most times a novel has a harem that lowers the quality of it but this one is the best harem I have ever seen, it is very well done, the girls have personality, they don't lose it when they get engaged with the MC and it is very beliavable the way the second and the third girl joins the harem (mainly because the context of the world and because they discuss about it in a real way)
    • The SOL aspect of this novel is really great, I loved every part of the interactions between the characters and the development of their relationships, you will see the characters grow and read about their quiet times. This is like life, it's not all about plot, because the most important thing about this novel is the character growth of the main character to become a better person through the story and the end couldn't be better, it's the perfect conclusion of his character arc.
It also have some flaws like it takes some cliches of the isekai genre but as I said it takes and use them in a good way. It also haven't closed some plots but the author sayed he is going to do it.

Spoiler

I also hope to see the final battle and what happened with Nanahoshi in the redundancy but I don't know if he is going to write about it

[collapse]

Overall this novel is a masterpiece for me and I really recommend it.

Parts I liked about this story are:

*His waifus

*The unique categories of skills/magic.

*Different kinds of race.

*Stories are thrilling.

It really is a well rounded novel. I respect the author for finishing it prior to the news that he was planning to finish it abruptly.

So, I've mostly read everything. I've read a lot of the side stories but I've also skipped some. Kind of lost a bit of interest when it came to the newer characters.

Anyway, on with the review. Mushoku Tensei is very good. Some sections of the story might be a little slow but, all in all, everything, all the clues and mysteries that the author plants in the very beginning, all eventually comes full circle and the ending is immensely satisfying. Mushoku Tensei has a great and colorful cast of characters,... more>> mature story telling, and a somewhat naive but still nuanced MC who isn't particularly alpha or beta.

This is what pulled me into light novels and web novels as a whole, so I'm probably kinda biased towards this due to nostalgia glasses. Nonetheless, no matter when and how far in the future I'll, I know I'll be able to pick up this and read this completely over and over again.

Some people dislike this novel because of the protagonist, who starts out like a total s*umbag that is fueled by hormones and lust. However, due to that, they never join the protagonist as he grows out of his... more>> immature shell and fully becomes an adult. This story is about the journey Rudeus goes through and how he changes
Spoiler

from being a selfish brat mentally to a robust and caring father that will go to any lengths to protect his family and loved ones

[collapse]
and interacts with his environment and it is an excellent one at that. Judging from some chinese web novels, japanese light novels/web novels, the main protagonist from those really don't experience much loss or set backs after the initial leg/midstory, (exceptions apply). However, in this case, Rudeus experiences numerous set backs, from his childhood to teenage years and even when he is an adult, he has times where he trips up and fails.

Some setbacks being:

Spoiler

the first loss against his father which led him to be kicked into the capital to grow, the first killing of people/humans on the continent he got teleported to, the appearance of one of the main driving forces (Orsted) for the last third of the novel, a certain misunderstanding that resulted in him staying alone for a good few years, the loss of his father, the loss against Orsted again when trying to defend his family under the influence of Hitogami, and the loss and death of one of his friends after his betrayal. Just to list some.

[collapse]

What the author does fantastically is the character motivations and development. The author can make you feel what Rudeus feels about the characters he interacts with. You are with him no matter when he is at his best or his worst. The moment of betrayal from a certain character will make you feel lost as well
Spoiler

Badigadi

[collapse]
, but you also do realize that this was inevitable. The author creates motivations for characters which build them as a whole, something which you don't see much from most reincarnated novels.

The world building is simply amazing, the side characters and setting are reused in great effects when Rudeus revisits them for any variety of reasons. Characters he meets along the way are far more interesting than some of the other characters in other web novels and light novels. Everyone has their distinctive feel and place in the story and it feels like a flesh and living world. From it being random and chance encounters to seeking out a character or a place in order to settle some business, it mimics how people in real life act. The locations are all distinct; desert lands, the tropical forests, a foreign and harsh continent, the city life, even isolated villages are present.

Tl;dr: All in all, although flawed, this novel nevertheless is a great read. The characters including the protagonist Rudeus all have their flaws and strengths, making them more human than other characters in other novels. The worldbuilding is one of the best I seen in the light novels I've read and the conclusion to this story is satisfying, it truly closes the story of Rudeus Greyrat in a peaceful manner. <<less

Overall, it was a very enjoyable series. It is also a completed series, so you'll be able to read it from beginning to end. It is a long series, with each volume taking about two hours of continuous, nonstop reading, so you won't run out of entertainment for all 24 volumes.

Rudy's adventures, carefree attitude, and dramatic improvements make for a very exciting, riveting read, although the battle scenes are not as descriptive as web novels such as Arifureta. Even so, it is still very detailed and allows the reader... more>> to get truly absorbed in the battle scenes. PLEASE *SMALL SPOILER ALERT* get past at least until he travels the demon continent with Rujerd before deciding whether or not to keep reading. It is around the end of volume 6. Don't give up just because the beginning may have disappointed you. Now, I don't want to prime you toward a negative opinion, so see how you like it for yourself. Despite some other reviews, I think the plot development from volumes 6-7 is actually very interesting and definitely spurs Rudy to make very specific choices down the road.

I was a little bit disappointed with the last volume, volume 24. Nevertheless, it was very exciting up until volume 23, but *SMALL SPOILER ALERT* there is a tremendous time gap between volume 23 and 24. We get to see what happens to Rudeus and his family, but never the God fight itself. The very last epilogue is slightly confusing and leads readers to reevaluate their entire opinion of how Rudy's story came to pass, it is open to discussion, debate, and theories.

All that to say, definitely give this thing a go. I had a very pleasant time with it, and at some points could not stop laughing at Rudy's brashness. Have a good time! <<less

No regret in reading all the chapters in 2.5 weeks, the satisfaction feel is well worth it.

-) the journey arc while protecting his friend

-) The warm family building and drama around him

-) the Tense fight to protect his family

-) the ending that feels like neutral ending, but it makes me warm inside after reading it

lastly, I feel that all the characters in the story are well fleshed that I could feel them alive

i felt kind of regretful that it has to end, but it will do for now

I really did enjoy Mushoku Tensei, and I believe it was my first Japanese Web Novel when I began reading them. While quite a few other reviewers bash on the story and the protagonist (i.e. Complain what a sh*t person he is), that is essentially the main narrative and purpose of the story.

As the translation of the novel suggests, the story is really about him making the most of life and becoming a better person. Sure he is really s*upid at moments (and sometimes out of character) I find these... more>> moments to be a form of character development. What person doesn't make mistakes, f*ck-ups badly or gets carried away? He doesn't overtly change too much, but becomes a better man as the story progresses and he lives his new life.

While the story isn't perfect, I am positive that the new Light Novel and edits will improve the reading experience of this novel.

Spoiler

The only thing I despise in the story was the Aisha arc of the redundancy chapters, however thankfully the author is going to retcon and/or rework that part (not sure if it is still canon as it was deleted but you never know)

It's one of the best Japanese novels ever made. It has some problem here and there but in overall it's 5/5. MC is strong but he is doesn't win all the time. Romance in the series (harem 3 wives) is really well done. Characters have depth and are well made, whole story is great. One thing I don't like is that there is "only 24 volumes" and some extra chapters (Mushoku Tensei Redundancy). I would like to read another 24 volumes if it would be possible. I feel kinda empty... more>> after finishing this awesome story, empty because we have to move on... <<less

  1. Sociopathic MC, claims to love others but always puts his own problems above his family, real s*umbag.
  2. No less than 3 of the core characters get NTR'd, like, extreme NTR. One female has frequent g*ngbangs and f*cks a random guy every night (and her husband knows). One b*tch refuses to marry the man she loves and has a relationship with for decades, has 5 children, and doesn't know who fathered 4 of them.
  3. Spoiler

The MC turns out to not even be the MC of his own f*cking story! This entise thing is just a lead-up to a revelation that his children will be important, not him.

In summary, it's hot garbage, but mildly entertaining until the 3rd arc, then it's all downhill.

I had finished reading it a long time ago, I'm going to type the review, based only on my memory.

1. Story ★★★★★ - Fantastic World-Building, with great character developments and a great plot-twist to follow, who doesn't want to? XD

2. Character ★★★★★ - Of course, Rudeus is not easy to like, especially at the beginning of the work, what helps are the girls and other characters around him, but when he starts his development it's fantastic, I'm just a little sad, for not having worked more part of his magic, obviously we don't just have his development, but the biggest drop point of the work is his broken personality at the beginning.

-

3. Art ★★★★★ - Taking the base LN, they are beautiful.

-

4. Enjoyment ★★★★★ - I remember that I took a lot of time to start reading (WN), but when I arrived at the Academy Arc, and the chapters took a long time, I had to look for it, and to my pleasant surprise (WN) had already finished and I ended up mixing between LN/WN, but overall It's a FANTASTIC walk, moments to laugh, cry, and tension!

-

5. General ★★★★★ - As I mentioned before, the problem is liking Rudeus, and I even understand the reason for the drop, but I hope you give it a chance, from your development to World-Building, everything will be worth it XD.
