A 34-year-old NEET otaku, chased out from his house by his family, found that his life is reaching a dead end. He then recalled that his life could actually have been much better if he had made better choices in the past.

Just when he was at the point of regret, he saw a truck moving at fast speed, and three high schoolers in its path. Mustering all the strength he had, he tried to save them and ended getting run over by the truck, quickly ending his life.

The next time he opened his eyes, he is reincarnated to a world of sword and magic as Rudeus Greyrat. Born to a new world, a new life, Rudeus decided that, “This time, I’ll really live my life to the fullest with no regret!” Thus starts the journey of a man yearning to restart his life.

By far the best WN of all time, bar none. This series has the greatest world building of any LN or WN series I've ever read, and honestly, it can compare to top tier fantasy series like Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire etc when it comes to world building and character building.

An absolutely amazing series

This is the first novel I've ever finished reading here. At least not counting redundancy chapters and spin-offs.

Some of you gave up too soon, I am sometimes annoyed by the MC's overthinking moments, but that fits his personality and multiple lives experiences. Occasionally they work as comedy reliefs. Moreover, I appreciate the pop culture references here and there.

I'm in the pro-harem faction, so personally this novel is quite compelling. The author has developed interesting characters on both sides, protagonists & antagonists, their relationships, as well as story turning points. Sometimes... more>> I find details mismatched or not clearly explained, but still very satisfactory. Again, there are more extras planned to be released by the author, so that point might be well taken care of.

I wish the LN version to be resumed soon. <<less

Great story.

Author focuses on personal relationships and show character growth far better than most of the novels I have read. This remains one of my favorite novels I have read. Well I also really liked rise of the shield hero, which is similar enough in certain respects.

Multiple POVs, well constructed story line. Lots of foreshadowing. Which is of course quite rare among long novels; to have a consistent story flow - without deliberate stalling.

Lots of twists and turns, heart jerking and tear jerking moments, a wonderful coming of age reincarnation... more>> story. If anyone loves reading stories with adventure, fluff, family values and dynamic characters - (even mobs show character growth) then this is a great story to read. I'd even go as far as suggest reading this first if someone wanted to get into reading webnovels, it's just that great.

Cons. - Of course there are.

Spoiler

a couple poorly constructed plot devices here and there to reduce the sense that the main character is too strong.. I don't think that it isn't required.. Just poorly inserted into the story.

Also; with two lives you'd think that the character can learn some social skills..

So far, it is a really good read. There is good character development, story development and is gripping. It is interesting, funny, well thought out and has elements of magic and swords. There are a few minor flaws, but nothing can be perfect, although it comes really close to being just that. It doesn't disappoint as the story progresses, although I am not a fan of harem, it is within a handle-able degree. The main character is not too overpowered, nor is he too dumb, wimpy or a jackass; which... more>> is all thumbs up in my opinion. All in all it's a great read and is worth your time. <<less

Rating: 3-3.5 stars, Translation: 5/5

(My reviews may sound negative, but I often list reasons why I didn't give 5 stars.)

[[5 star = almost all readers may enjoy. 4 star = large majority of readers may enjoy. 3 star = 50/50 of readers may enjoy. 2 star = a niche audience may enjoy. 1 star = maybe portion of niche audience may enjoy.]]

[[5/5 = Infrequent minor errors. 4/5 = Frequent minor errors or infrequent major errors, no difficulty to read. 3/5 = Frequent major errors, some difficulty to read.... more>> 2/5 = Difficult to read. 1/5 = Unreadable.]]

A 34-year-old hikikomori was kicked out of his family home by his siblings, after MC didn't go to his parents' funeral. He appears to have regrets as he wanders around homeless, then dies after trying to save some pedestrians from a car accident. He wakes up reborn as the child of a minor noble couple in a fantasy world, with his memories and intellect intact at birth. He decides to make the most of his new life and be a new person.

Story contains reincarnated MC, no special abilities for MC other than head start on education and training from an early age, age progression from birth to adulthood, slice of life, first person POV, magic medieval fantasy world, no RPG or game-like system but there are magic and sword skills and ranks, humanoid races, monsters/beasts, various countries/factions, harem, ecchi, loli, adventurers, rare dungeons, moderate amount of small group combat, rare large scale combat, high school life phase.

Content. It's not bad, but also not very exciting. Most of it is slice of life, until the late volumes when there is more serious challenges and antagonists. In the early arcs, MC doesn't have any big goals other than just living a new life. The next several arcs have soft goals like fixing some issues or helping friends/family, and then the later arcs have more serious goals like fighting serious enemies. So I think it starts of really slow and gets more serious later on.

Storytelling. It's almost entirely first person POV, and a huge portion of text is in the form of internal thinking/monologue. I think that might make some readers bored. The humor kind of gets old, as most of it relates to perversion. As mentioned above, the pace is very slow at first, but then speeds up. The final 3-4 volumes have a lot of events crammed into them, compared to the start; might feel rushed.

Characters. MC is not OP, but since he has the mind of an adult and trains from age 3, his magic power and skill are among the top in the new world. He does have some progression, but pretty much slows down, as well as his companions' progression, about midway through the series. Characters do have some personality and have their roles. One issue I have is that that too many characters have conflicts of interests that get worked into the story near the end, feels overused.

The loli. MC claims he's not into loli, but his actions and thoughts suggest otherwise. In the first several volumes, he jokes about mol*sting or having s*x with children, and even briefly gropes girls who are aged 6, 10, and 12. I think most readers would be disturbed, even though MC has the body of a child. However, because it doesn't go any further, and the loli stuff drops off when he reaches high school age, it was somewhat tolerable.

Overall, it's a fair reincarnation story. I thought it gets better after the first several volumes, but the initial slow pace and too much narration/monologue could make some readers lose interest. It's one of the few completed series I've seen so far, and does give a reasonable conclusion. The pe*ophilia was limited to the beginning, so it may be tolerable, but probably would bother some readers. I initially gave this a 2.5-3 stars, but because the story

got better and the loli content tapered off, I raised it to 3-3.5 stars.

Other: This is the WN, which is completed with 24 volumes, and some side stories/spin off chapters. There is a LN, which I believe either isn't complete, or hasn't been completely translated. I heard that it's not much different from the WN, except for additional side stories. <<less

Recommended Read.

Pros:

1) It's complete.

2) MC isn't a blatantly OP riajuu. He's powerful but not s*upidly powerful.

3) Plausible magic system. MC isn't some s*upidly powerful master of all. He can't even use Touki ("fighting spirit"). But he can do most attack magics (Earth/Water focused) yet is limited in other areas which allows side characters to shine. Unfortunately the author doesn't do nearly as much with this as he should/could.)

Cons:

1) Forced Harem.

Spoiler

Basically wife of the year will spend a short time together and fall completely in love with the MC then separate due to [insert plot event here] then spend a few years pining for the MC where they'll marry after they reunite when MC shags them due to depression.

[collapse]

2) Overly used relationship device. Virtually everyone falls into the same pattern where it takes a literal shag to get them out of a slump. Like wtf, is this the only way the author can depict depression?

Spoiler

Paul needs one, MC needs several, even Cliff (although Elize jumped him first).

Surprisingly the only one that doesn't need a shag is Zanoba & MC's sisters (guess author didn't want to enter in*est territory). But then again he's not entirely sane and he's good to go if he gets his hands on some dolls.

[collapse]

3) Power level of MC get restricted in the DUMBEST WAY POSSIBLE.

Spoiler

MC gets power limited via IDIOT BALL of all things. MC becomes a competent mage at the age of 7 showing very logical mastery of his magic (doing what most people with common sense would do in a magic world). Author realizes that if this keeps up, he'd be too powerful to work with so MC purposefully becomes a useless potato leading to numerous obvious "QQ I lost muh X/Y/Z because I'm not strong enough, " situations.

It gets ridiculous to the point where MC's future self has to warn him to not be so moronic. (Especially since he's facing a "god".)

Mushoku Tensei is a awesome book for people who are into Action/Drama, the story is pretty good and the characters are well developed. Its a story of reincarnation and redeeming oneself. The MC is kind of OP but levels up slowly and in an organised manner. The antagonists are pretty good except the God. The heroines are very unique and interesting. Now on to the problems, its way to realistic for a light novel. Normally the novels have their own common sense rather that the common sense of our world,... more>> but Mushoku Tensei has our common sense and makes us think that this is really happening rather that thinking this is an artificial world. It might be a hit with many people but that made me loose interest in it. I only went on with it to find out what happened in the end. I would have told the author to turn the reality in this down by a huge margin as most of the readers like to read about a world very different from ours. The MC in his previous life used to be fat but is quite good looking in his new body, I would have preferred to know about his previous body as much as possible.

In the end I would like to say that I enjoyed the novel quite a bit and I gave it 4/5. Give it a try if you have a lot of time and are ok with some weird scenes. <<less

I have reread the the WN and finally understood why I both loved and hated this mid story. Yes mid. MT is the most influential Isekai genre for its modern counter parts compared to the older ones like Escaflowne, Rayearth, Inuyasha or Seikishi Monogatari (My personal favorite).

I loved the beginning parts of the story, especially the world building. The introduction to nobility was also pretty good. Then the Turning Points happened. I like the adventure parts, I really do. But I f*cking hate the TPs. The overarching storyline of MT... more>> is its weakest point imo.

Hitogami and the Dragon God isn't f*cking needed imo. The isekai slop that followed after MT seems to agree with me. MT is the main reason why I prefer watching something like IseSuma (Smartphone). It burned all of my love for complicated plots. It is also why I prefer his other work Orc Eiyuu, all the things he is good at (world building, character development, etc.) without a overcomplicated arching plot.

The ending is just another reason for me to dislike MT (yes I don't f*cking like it).

Spoiler

Knowing that he isn't even the main character is completely sh*t imo.

[collapse]

Overall, we can thank MT for all the isekai garbage slop we have today. They only took the good parts of MT imo. <<less

I can see that people seemed to have review bombed this series in the last few years based off what they watched on it's adaptation... not knowing that the animation was based on the light novel and not this one which also bares where their motivation lies.

To those who haven't heard of this yet, or have heard but earnestly want to give it a shot. I'll tell you in advance - if you are looking for stellar characters, please turn around.

This is not a "main character" or "hero" type story.... more>> This is not a story you are meant to insert yourself, which would make you feel bad because you would have been a character with flaws a righteous person wouldn't like to have.

This is simply a story of someone, who made mistakes in his first life and tries to be better in his second life. And he finds that second life not as planned as he wanted it to be, fumbles several times (the kind which is apparently a dealbreaker for the woke), but still tries to be a better person and aims to get the best outcome he could grasp. <<less

I don't understand how the reviews are so high.

I just don't understand how people say the ending is good (it's not, it's not even an ending at all)

And I don't understand how people don't just want to beat Rudeus over the head with a baseball bat from beginning to end because of his cruelty.

But to explain all of that will require spoilers so here we go.

Spoiler

First of all the ending is Rudeus dies before the main villain is even close to defeated, there is no buildup to the final boss fight its he dies, and in his death he is shown a vision of the future where his descendants have already won. We don't actually get to read anything about how they did it, their journey/adventure to accomplish it at all. It's entirely unsatisfying

So that's why the ending is *** but why is the romance crap too you might ask? Well its simple really Rudeus is a cruel heartless bastard to anyone not one of his 3 wives but is also a love interest. He intentionally excludes any possible addition to his harem in a terrible way.

The easiest example is Aisha who was raised for the sole purpose of serving Rudeus. Ignore the ethics/morality of that to pay attention to the fact that this girl is incredibly smart and at first does not want Rudeus but eventually grows to love him, and at every turn she is shoved away her affection rebuffed.

It is never resolved, it actually causes a rift in the family because she wants him, but he only has eyes for 3 women and refuses the idea of a 4th even though Aisha was around from decently early on in the story.

There is even an extremely controversial short story related to Aisha's love life that the author had to scrap because it was universally hated. And that's just one of the potiential love interests that is handled terribly and cruelly.

If you ignore the awful half-hearted harem (its one example where more harem would have been better) and the s**t ending where the MC dies before his loved ones who then have to survive decades without him because their lifespans are much longer (like seriously there was no way to increase his lifespan???)

You would find that everything else is really quite good, I just feel like these are very huge negatives that definitely detract from the rest of the story.

Also Badigadi is an extremely contrived antagonist that is just super contradictory, he's helping Hitogami who tricked him into splitting a good guy, creating 1 bad guy (Demon God) and 1 neutral guy (Technique God) and also killing his own wife. Even knowing that Hitogami is evil, even telling others not to trust him, he still decides to help him, even forgetting about his own wife and everything... wtf?

[collapse]

There are also many other unresolved plot threads such as Nanahoshi for instance. but really they're too numerous to count because of the garbage "ending" of the series.

And to anyone that mentions a sequel, why do you keep reiterating the misinformation so much?

Rifujin na Magonote the author says repeatedly that while he intends to write a short story set 80 years in the future it isn't a sequel and he has no intention of ever writing a sequel. Check his tweets for proof.

He also stated that this short story isn't going to have anything to do with any of the main characters of Jobless Reincarnation. And he isn't going to write it until the anime is finished.

So what we've got is it folks, don't polish the turd in your head because of future hope from a nonexistent never coming sequel. It had great potential. Hopefully the anime does a lot better than the novel. <<less

Nothing I tell you about Mushoku Tensei can't be found in other reviews. The story is good. It has flaws, but it pulls you in until you're wrapped up in the world and having thoughts about the characters. There is harem, so depending on your thoughts on that genre the romance can be hit or miss. However, Rudeus Greyrat is a very well written character who has possibly one of the greatest wn endings I've ever read. This is a full course meal in terms of story writing. If you... more>> plan on (or are) watching the anime there is no reason not to read this.

Side Note: History-wise this series predates all other Isekai and is considered the founding father of the genre. <<less

There is a problem of extremity in the harems, either the MC is a limp-d*ck or sleeps with too many girls to have a impactful impression. This is just the right amount and believable to an extent. Great story by the way.

You can see this story well planned by author if you read the whole story. Some volumes are a little boring but the plot development is good and you can see how the plot connect each volumes. The world setting is good and country relations and political situations are not out of place and they fitted well in the story. Side characters show development that is hardly seen in other novel.

Good point are many

  • good story
  • good world setting
  • good developments
  • well planned baits
  • Amazing harem building (I am not a fan of harem building development but I have to admit this novel's harem building amazing to the point that it show how their cultures in other world works and how it blends naturally. There is different cultures and different religion and how they came to corporate by respecting each other belief. You can hate harem building that all female characters come to love MC but this novel's harem is too good and show their culture)
  • finally nice conclusion : There are many novel that turn wrong at the final plot or final arcs but this novel conclusion is beautifully well written that deserve praise
There is also some part I don't like

  • Main Character's own development is lacking to the point that irritate readers. There is too many points that can boost MC motivation or his enlightenment but sadly the author is too obsessed with MC's supporting role and neglect his development
  • secondly I don't know the author forgot or not. There is no real objective of Hitogami which is the grand villain who MC's pave the way to ruin. The first dragon god and Hitogami is sworn enemy for no reason and from that time on the first dragon god prepare for his son to defeating Hitogami with all technique available and all arts available. If there is reason for conflict, the story will get more depth. Even after reading, Orsterd and Hitogami is like just filler that is decoration with no meaning in some RPG games
Finally I believe that a good novel is the one that can attract readers to the ends with anticipation. How the plot turn out or how well the plots are connected to is second to consider. For example no matter how good a novel is in connecting or bating plots, if the reader got bored in middle and dropped, it would be meaningless. So I rate the novel by prioritizing how can novel attract readers and every other thing is just for another thing to consider. <<less

Everything was purely gold. Really!

The story, how the author tells it. The writing. Frankly everything would be 10/5.

All except the MC's "I'm not gonna kill a single human/humanoid" philosophy nonsense. If he were a loner, he could do whatever he wanted but in a group, if you were to have that kinda thought, you would end up killing your allies and innocent people.

Urgh, this was the first novel I read and it was great but not without some dissatisfactory parts. The beginning was extremely great and I felt that everything was great up till the last few arcs. I feel like the MC is far less OP than he should be and fights almost always end up with MC and co ganging up on a single person and still barely winning. He almost never gets stronger after some point, only his armor sort of does. To say I have lots of conflicting feelings about this novel is an understatement. This was undoubtedly my first Isekai/Reincarnation novel and what got me hooked on reading more of the genre and LN/WNs in general. Given all that I've now read however, I can't really call this a great novel as it has so many strange writing choices and unnecessary plot developments that really irk me. *Spoiler at the end of this 1st section*

I'd split this novel into three parts: The first six volumes, the school arc volumes, and... more>> the rest of the series. The first six volumes are my absolute favorite part of the series and I personally think they're easily the best parts overall. Rudeus starts out as a pretty good protagonist that has a good head on his shoulders. As dense and pe*verted as he is which might be off putting at times, Rudeus tries to really be a better person and disconnect himself from his previous life. Once paired with Eris, the initial main heroine, his character shines even further as they become a really interesting, cute, and dynamic duo. Her absolutely awful personality brings out the good in Rudeus as he does all in his power to make Eris into a better person and slowly succeeds over time. Put Rujierd, an outcast to society who faces extreme racism and discrimination wherever he goes, into this wacky duo and suddenly you have a very strange but interesting trio going on this life and death adventure. The climax of the 6th volume is simultaneously great and awful at the same time. On one hand, the plot develops in an extreme way that really makes you look forward to whatever may happen next. On the other hand, the author probably had a stroke and suddenly decided he wanted to completely overwrite all of Rudeus' character development and also get rid of Eris. I won't go into detail and while I don't think separating Rudeus, Eris, and Rujierd was a bad idea, it was definitely executed in the worst way possible. It's such a jarring and forced development that makes little sense, and eventually you find out that this was purely done on the author's whims to increase Rudeus' harem.

I have tons more things to say about the rest of the novel, but I'll stop myself here. I really do think the first six volumes are some of the best I've read in the reincarnation genre and I would highly recommend them. Just be prepared for jarring character development on a whim for the sake of harem once your honeymoon phase with the first six volumes is over. If you like harems though then you'll probably find this fine. <<less

Honestly I quite like this series, it has a deep story and well built world. It's not your average isekai novel where the MC gets cheat like ability bullshit, but still quite strong with his own effort (although he has like the biggest magical capacity in that world but I don't think that's a cheat ability). At least it was like that but I was disappointed in the later chapter, starting with his reunion with Eris and then the Asura Kingdom Arc. The MC was such a naive and coward,... more>> I thought he could be better but I was quite disappointed. Even so it was still a good read.
