Qiao Shao, who worked hard to stay up all night and study, was first in class — if you count from the bottom.

He Shen, who was able to get a perfect score even when he slept all day, in a rare display of kindness, bought a bottle of drink to comfort his s*upid seatmate.

Then he saw the messages popping up on Qiao Shao’s phone—

Dad: Don’t panic, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Dad just ordered a new sports car for you.

Granddad: Grandson, there’s no need to hurry. It’s alright even if you didn’t do well in your exam. Granddad bought a new yacht for you, come and take a break.

Grandpa: Grandson, don’t cry, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Grandpa’s billions-worth of properties are all yours.

With a blank expression, He Shen threw his 2.5 Yuan worth bottle of drink into the tr*sh.

Hold your horses! Comfort?

Honestly, a very satisfying read. If you're looking for something that is sweet and light hearted with a sprinkle of angst with HE this is recommended for you.

He Shen and Qiao Shao are such a lovey dovey and sweet couple. It's nice to see a nice read that's fulfilling towards the heart with heavy themes that aren't overbearing to its readers.

It's a tad bit unrealistic. But then again this is a fiction novel so it's not supposed to be 100% grounded towards reality.

5/5 would read again in the future. If... more>> you are overwhelmed by other danmei/bl novels that are filled with drama and angst- this could be a nice change. The ending of the novel is certain and sweet. Even though its quite heavy on its theme, it's not super angsty. The angst is very well balanced with the fluff that really makes your heart go soft all over.

Spoiler

It focuses more on angst on mental and family issues, and how ML and MC recovered from it and find solace (and love) in each other.

Overall I think that you should try and read this novel. For people who love to see a couple filled with love and sweetness towards one another, this is highly recommended for you. <<less

This novel for me is gold... I've waited for this for how many months to be completed and it was worth it!

Despite the traumatic experience of MC and ML, they became a healing and a breather to each other... One of the best! ♥️

5 stars

There's quite a bit of misunderstandings (luckily no big falling out over it) but overall a very sweet story. There's some dealing with mental health issue that's gently handled but not overly angsty so still very sweet and light. I like the fluffiness and school setting. A very nice read apart from all the plotting, backstabbing books I've been reading lately.

The side characters are genuinely funny and nice too. I especially love the supporting family MC has. And it has a very nicely wrapped up HE for everyone.

Only sad... more>> thing is there's no side CP so don't go shipping any of those side characters. <<less

This story is cute but it has its moments of angst. The summary is a bit misleading in that sense. Both the MC and ML suffered early on in life and that led to them having to deal with psychological trauma.

Spoiler

Qiao Shao was kidnapped when he was 10/11 and held captive for a year. He regressed in behavior and had a hard time coping with it. Because of this he missed school for a year and was delayed.

He Shen's trauma was due to his family. He has eidetic memory and his family, mainly grandpa, forced him to learn and review books so that he can free his mom from being held captive in the house. But his mom committed su*cide.
[collapse]

Qiao Shao has a very supportive family but He Shen does not. They have to battle their psychological trauma and heal through the power of love. It's not as sappy or corny as it sounds though. Very realistic and heart warming. It's a really good read.

This is good. It is really really REALLY good.

The summary doesn't do justice to this story. It has its fluffy moments, but it also has its tear-jerking moments. There were so many times my stomach almost started hurting from holding my laughter, but I cried my eyes out that many times too.

It is a story of love, but also of overcoming difficulties. And sweet, REALLY sweet.

Not going to lie, I feel both love and hate for the author - love for bringing this story and hate for all that Shao... more>> Shao has to go through.

This story has so many layers. There were many times I initially thought that the characters were doing stuff thoughtlessly for no reason like characters in stories usually do, but it's just that their intentions weren't revealed to us yet. And they are revealed later, slowly and painfully.

I had so many questions from the beginning. Things made sense but seemed off at the same time.

Why did Shao Shao go to East High? If he wanted to study, he can do it in the school his family wanted him to go to, right? Sure, people there would know his identity but that shouldn't affect his studying too much?

Why are his dad, granddad and grandpa so overly doting on him? Not that it's bad, but it just seemed a little too overly protective.

Why was the term "new environment" so significant that it influenced their decision to let him go to East High?

Most of all, why does Shao Shao not want people to know he is Qiao Zongmin's son? It didn't seem to be from just it being distracting. He seemed really averse to it.

I thought at first I was thinking too much. This IS a fluff-filled novel. But I was not. And the author revealed that little at a time. Until we came to know everything.

Spoiler

Shao Shao was hiding not his identity but his experience. Most people would know what Qiao Zongmin's son went through. He didn't want people to know he was Qiao Yi. So he had to start off anew with new identity where people would not recognize him.

His family is so protective because of what happened to him.

It's so so heartbreaking to read those parts. I felt really really glad that Shao Shao could get over it and come to terms with what happened to him. His year long confinement is kinda downplayed in the story, but I can only imagine how despairing the situation must have been. To wait for months upon months to wait for someone to come save him, only to be disappointed and end up being freed only when his captor died.

Shao Shao is an incredibly strong character to even be able to function like a normal person after all that happened to him. Loosing his most beloved mother right after he was finally getting out of the shadows of his confinement? And that he himself was so rejecting and afraid of her before her death... It must have have felt awful.

I'd imagined all kinds of situations for what might have happened to his mom to give him the trauma but the real thing was so so SO much worse than I imagined.

I'm also glad he could be of help to his dad and they could overcome it together. And his granddad and grandpa too. Both of them suffered from losing their wives and one child (Qiao Zongmin's little brother and Yang Yun) and then they watched this happen to their little darling grandson. It must have been incredibly painful. I really cried when I read about one of them wishing he could replace Shao Shao to be the one to suffer. So I'm happy they could get over it too.

[collapse]

The name of the novel is a little ironic, since the "underachieving" seatmate does need comforting, just not in the way you would think.

Also, Shao Shao is not an underachiever. He is just not able to take exams properly after what happened as he can't handle the quiet. Somehow, that hit me really hard.

In any case, I recommend this story if you want to read a fluffy story that has its sad parts.

But maybe avoid this if you are looking for a lighthearted BL romance. <<less
