I'm seeing the comments mentioning that it is a slow-burn BL fantasy, AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. The translator's views and spoilers for the story made me so happy and looking forward to this novel bc it focuses on smth I don't rlly see in BL/Yaoi. I'm caught up for the manhwa and couldn't wait for the next season so I had to read the novel. I read up to around ch. 300 I think, then waited for like a yr for more chapters to release. I'll give my 2... more>> cents on this.

I adore Yikyung's character. Ik ppl are tired of weak BL MC, white lotus, mary sue, but I still like his character and dynamic with Seo Dawon. Not the power scale in the relationship, but how Yikyung is cowardly and a pushover but learns or eventually learns to confront Seo Dawon. And how Seo Dawon obviously has the upper hand in their relationship, but will eventually learn to trust and rely on Yikyung. There are actually a lot of fantasy BL/Yaoi out there, but it's very typical. Like Esper x Guide where they eventually f*ck, esper can only be comfortable with MC, and then fall in love. Or more dark theme BLs like Champagne and Roses, The Foul, Passion, Codename Anastasia, etc. But even then, the plot lacks bc it's centered on smut, toxic relationship/manipulation, and there's no real development. In the end, they usually just f*ck and confess, with some drama cuz why not, then everything's fine.

So I rlly like slow-burn BLs, especially fantasy ones, bc the plot is usually more in-depth and characters have more time to develop instead of just f*cking, confessing, then forgiving. Some example are Necromancer Survival, Turning, Heaven's official blessing, Whose Baby is it, Cherry Blossom, Poyun, etc. Obviously if u cannot read slow burns or stories with 100+ chapters, then this story is not for u. Nothing wrong with that, ofc. It's just a preference after all. But for so many BL manhwas/manhuas/mangas I've read, I've seen many ppl complain about how some parts felt rush or that the ending was forced. And sometimes those stories were adapted from novels/short stories. Or most often didn't adapt a novel and just made the story on the spot. I feel like slow burns, especially fantasy ones, have a better chance at developing characters more. <<less

Currently about halfway through and definitely going to keep going. This novel is def either you love it or you don't.

While it's super slow burn it's not a super bad thing since the novel focuses more on the storyline. First couple chapters is a bit info dumping but that's to be expected, plus the way it's written makes reading it less like a chore and more like scrolling through social media.

As for the characters themselves, the relationships between MC and the others is exactly the type I like- protective over... more>> someone weak. MC may be super weak but he's not entirely s*upid and over reliant on those around him. His reactions to dungeons and stronger people can seem a little bit pathetic but it's a lot like hoe most people would react to those kinds of dangerous situations. I also enjoyed the morality struggle of MC.

As for the translation itself, I think the translator did an amazing job. The sentences flow much more smoothly in English compared to some other novels. Overall, really recommend and love this <3 if you like an MC who gets traumatized you'll like this too <<less

Honestly, I didn't expect much when I started reading

I started reading just to pass the time

But it was really beyond my expectation

... more>> The development of the main character in the first 100 chapters is not much, but if you wait a little, you can understand what I mean... The plot revolves around revenge, but this is only the beginning, the main character really shocked me, improving his skills as well as his control over his servants

Now that I'm at chapter 300, it's really moving to remember where he started from...

Romance can only be seen after chapter 250+, and before that it might be nothing but a toxic relationship (not in that way bec thay just are not sure about thair feelings so in MC view point it might not call a romantic relationship),

but after that you will gradually get to know ml's point of view, his character has always been one of my favorites.

Undercover work that eventually gives way to honesty and the main character and ML begin to establish a proper relationship.

Also, both of their views are strangely understandable

I'm a little unhappy with the limitations of the system, I prefer to think of the mc's relationship with the servants as a family relationship.

Spoiler

The need for blood and touch in the servants is a bit painful, but fortunately it is not something that can be ignored and it shows its effect in the performance of the characters properly

[collapse]

The villains are really interesting, I don't like them, but I can sympathize with them in some situations.

The seemingly perfect Bae Jaemin is nothing more than a broken doll upon closer inspection.

Despite their painful past, the story points out that they are still the fault for that wrong choices, life circumstances, and trauma still don't mean they're completely innocent.

Anyway this story is 5 out of 5 for me, the translation is really good and the author has done a great job.

If the reader waits, thay will get to the exciting parts

But if you're looking for a quick romance and fast progression, this is definitely not for you <<less

This is top tier. First off the translator did an amazing job. They clearly are fluent in both languages and they provide notes and really I’m not sure I have ever seen a better translation on anything.

Story is long and involved. Characters are very well developed. This is not really a dungeon story. There have been only a couple dungeons, and even now MC is pretty weak. Better then he was, but what he lacks in power he makes up in guts. He is frequently horribly hurt, he is often... more>> terrified, but he puts others ahead of himself (honestly way too much) and keeps going through the fear.

MC has undergone a lot of character development but I feel like he really deserves to start kicking bu*t by now. He has been through a lot of pain.

Romance and his relationship starts very unhealthy, and MC and ML both have issues but it gets addressed. So far MC still has too low self astern and ML still is a bit too controlling but they are both getting better- and they have had to deal with way too much.

There is some fluff, lots of teasing, and also some full on horror. You won’t be smiling all that much reading this, you will be more in suspense and want to know what’s going to happen while being afraid or feel sad for MC. At the same time low lows make the highs feel so much better.

necromancy feels like a broken class, but not broken good. Sure no other class can you do what MC does, but without a crap ton of luck MC would have died like 20 times by now. This class was not written to function. I think it’s like winning the lotto but in order to cash in the ticket you have to cut off both your hands. MC is crazy enough and desperate enough that he would do so- but no one else in their right mind would. <<less

Honestly, it's a good novel. Many leave it because the progress is slow, but I say be patient because it is worth it.

The MC never seemed particularly annoying to me, a little silly yes, but not annoying, I empathize with him a lot because of what he has been through from high school to the present, he is very human in my opinion, he has his flaws. but little by little it matures and improves.

Regarding ML... I hate him xd, although in the chapter I'm going he already had an... more>> improvement in terms of his perfectionist personality, I still don't like him
Spoiler

It is the fact that in life he was a playboy, although his relationship with MC is improving so much that you could say that it is already something healthy, I still feel that they have to fix some things

[collapse]

I really like villains, my favorite is Ryu Haerin, but I don't like her at the same time
Spoiler

Her point of view was interesting, we saw why she was like that and what her mental processing was to do what she did, although honestly her mental processing of her was complicated... the truth is that she seemed more like an obsessive yandere. Although I hate Seo Dawon, I can't blame him for Ryu Haerin's actions, although I honestly do hate that he is actually a playboy but that is something problematic for me.

[collapse]

Also the chapters are not very long so it is easier to read, I recommend it, it is one of my favorite novels now 👍 <<less

Admittedly some parts were draggy and felt slightly bothersome to read; eg. Some flashback arcs slightly disrupted the pace of the novel imo, HOWEVER, if you are looking for a good revenge plot with diverse characters, slow-burn, mystery, (dark) humour, and a realistic MC, this is the novel for you.

The bulk of the novel does not focus on the romance between the MC and ML, however is does largely come hand-in-hand with the MC's thought process and his progress (stats wise) throughout the novel. Many of the reviews that... more>> rated the novel on the lower end have yet to read past the 150+ chapter mark and many of the issues they brought up were addressed in later parts of the novel.

The MC is not OP from the beginning and does not have strong mental resilience, and much of the plot stems from his reliance on the side characters' abilities. This does not necessarily mean the MC is completely useless, but is in a sense realistic for a character who was blatantly described since the beginning to be your average, run of the mill, 20+ year old guy who hasn't been exposed to the harsh elements of the Dungeon scene for very long. Plus, it helped to bring the other side characters into the plot more smoothly and added more substance to the novel to prevent it from being too one-dimensional.

The novel has interesting plot twists and character background stories as well, and along with the various quirks of all the characters, it makes this novel a highly enjoyable and addictive one to read.

If you are looking for your average BL novel, I'd suggest reading elsewhere as this is more plot-centric than romance, with an established relationship only MUCH later in the novel as compared to other typical ones. It is, however, very much worth reading if you are interested in picking up a horror-fantasy novel focusing on complex human relationships with some BL aspects.

Overall good read with little complaints and I can't wait to finish the novel. Thank you to the translators as well who picked it up! If anyone knows where to read the completed translated version please let me know, thank you! <<less

If you came into this story expecting a typical dungeon diving story with a logical, smart MC, then this story isn't for you. Most of the content revolves around the revenge, with barely any combat scenes or explanation regarding the combat abilities of the MC and his crew. You can probably tell from the other reviews, but the MC is a completely spineless coward that would flounder completely if left on his own. It fits his character yes, but it can still be aggravating to read. I also find it... more>> strange how basically every character gravitates towards the MC despite this cowardly disposition.

The plot of the novel basically consists of the MC being dragged around by every other character, while he makes 0 meaningful input. In fact, the MC pretty much has no idea what is going on in 90% of situations. What made me drop the novel was the short few chapters written from the ML's point of view, where I realised I was actually engaged with the novel for the first time since I started it. The ML is basically the foil to the MC, with a polar opposite personality. Essentially, he thinks like the average KR protagonist, which is probably why I liked his arc. At the very least, I was glad that he actually bothered getting a grasp of his situation unlike the MC. If you're like me and prefer this type of protagonist, then this novel is not for you.

I'm sure this is a decent novel that just hit the wrong demographic in me though, considering the raving reviews across the board. <<less

This is incredibly slow burn. At first it seems like the MC is a standard naivee, pushover (and to some degree he is) but his behavior has its own explanations. His chatacter growth is very gradual.

I like the main character because he's somehow relatable. I adore his relationship with Lackey.

The story isn't really my favourite. Not because its bad, but because it doesn't live up to my expectations I think. It started out really slow with a lot of background knowledge almost being thrown at us. I think the MC actually spent 3 chapters straight scrolling through a forum.... and while I'm fine with novels having good world building the way this was written just didn't catch my interest. I stuck it out until chapter 20, but the MC still hasn't done anything. The flow seems to be extremely... more>> slow and doesn't look like it will pick up anytime soon. Again, it's not a bad book, it's just really not to my tastes. <<less

Overall the story is quite interesting. MC's personality, though occasionally frustrating, is honestly likeable. The ghosts' personalities are different and unique, fun and playful. Lackey is a great skelly boy.

The relationship between the MC and his summons are well done. There's actual formation of relationships, as well as a veil of mystery. The romance between MC and Dawoon was formed smoothly and solidly, was believable. After awhile though, their relationship starts to get a little funky.

The MC does get decently along with the ghosties, but he really only progresses with... more>> Dawoon, the others are kind of left to the side, which I feel like is a waste. They need more interaction.

The story progression was a tad slow, but I liked that, it didn't try to rush certain events. I think the only thing I disliked/skipped after the first/second time were the ghost memories; it just kind of dragged on to where it just bored me. Also it needed more time spent on leveling, it was kind of skimmed compared to other events.

Upon summoning the 4th summon, the MC starts to act unlike one would expect, kind of a sudden change. Around this part of the story weird things just start to happen.
Spoiler

The moment when the MC are supposed to view the ghosts' memories he instead starts experiencing "fictional" events rather than their memories;

[collapse]
which could be due to not wanting to be repetitive on the events; however, it just doesn't feel right.

Spoiler

Also, the moment MC gets assaulted by Koo Hui-Seo in c173, and NOTHING HAPPENS, but discomfort and anger. BUT NOTHING ELSE. It infuriated me. They, need him, sure, but like glaring and cursing doesn't help. Ahhh, the ghosties get super protective over MC, but they did absolutely nothing about it! Not even after they were able to actually be summoned.

[collapse]

Even with a lot of flaws, I still found this story enjoyable. I do still hope to read more in the future. <<less

The story started out really good!! But after the hoseok arc, it just felt like filler arcs one after another... they were still entertaining, but I much rather they move along with the plot than spend time on side arcs that don't contribute much to the story... Dropping the novel, but I will still keep up with the webtoon since the pacing is much faster there.

The MC has low self esteem and I would say shows depressive tendencies such as bringing himself low, feelings of burden to his parents and basically everyone he knows. He is also attach to Lackey who is his sole solace in his lonely path as necromancer. I find parts of story hard to read as it couses me to feel bad and lose some sleep. The story needs some trigger warning for mental health as characters inner talks are very life-like

Honestly, this story isn't for those that can't handle horror nor slow-burns. It has a lot of heavy topics, and while they all are addressed when they are brought up, they still exist and can potentially be triggering for those who cannot handle certain topics (I'd say there's about a portion of a handful of problematic scenes that do exist within this story, so it's definitely not recommended for anyone who is bothered by them. ^^' I also struggled reading at a couple of chapters, but I still really enjoy... more>> this story).

That all being said, I truly truly adore this novel, and unironically enough? I came to the novel after reading the manhwa, and to be completely honest, I prefer it much more than the manhwa. I really really like this novel (if it's not obvious by how much I've read so far).

This novel takes the topics it covers pretty sincerely and seriously enough that I appreciate that a lot of it isn't completely brushed over like they are in other stories that I have read. It's not to say that they're taken seriously all the time, but they are addressed, acknowledged, and used as a means for building up the main character to get better for the sake of himself and those around him. There are a lot of parts where the story can get pretty heavy, but the MC's perseverance is strong, and he stays consistent and determined to his goals.

I think perhaps the best aspects of this story is seeing how the main character goes from being one way for most of the story, but slowly begins to adopt habits and behaviors of those around him into his personality a bit more, making him more confident and persistent in pursuing his goals. Not only that, but one of the parts I also really like about this story, is the fact that the author leaves little-to-no plot holes. Of course, there's the question of occasionally asking "were there security cameras during this scene and place?", but for the most part, the author addresses the questions a reader might ask as they are reading the novel, which I truly appreciate about it ^^ It's really good at answering questions as you read and addressing the heavier parts of the story well.

And if you're a lover of horror, I definitely recommend this story. The body horror and nightmare fuel that this story put into my mind after reading certain chapters is just <3 augh, I adore it. It really got my adrenaline and stressors functioning while reading it <3

Spoiler

There is a moment, after like chapter 315 where I thought to myself "ah, I'm really grateful that the author truly did bless me with such a good story of pacing the horror well!"... boy howdy, was I wrong. I was facing existential dread for quite a while ;-; but I'm all good now! I really did like the horror from that section, because it felt like it was slowly seeping into me that I truly wanted the MC to go back to experiencing his happiness again and I am rooting for him and his goals!!

Well, I would like to start with the review by mentioning that if you are someone who cannot read more than 500 chapters or if you are expecting a super OP protagonist, it is better NOT to read it, this is because I have seen that most of the negative reviews are from people who have not even reached chapter 200, who would barely be 2/5 of the story.

Leaving that aside, I will start by saying the things that I consider positive:

1. The protagonist, Choi Lee-kyung, as many previous positive... more>> reviews have mentioned, is a very human character who starts from the bottom, but little by little he grows and is filled with conviction, he also stops being dragged by the other characters and it becomes progressively stronger without reaching OP.
Spoiler

Furthermore, he was always somewhat emotionally mature, forgiving Han si seok to be able to move on with his life is something very mature on his part and believe me, it is not easy to forgive someone who caused you a lot of insecurities.

[collapse]

2. The villains really achieve their goal, make you hate them, lol, but they are still not flat characters who are bad just because yes, they have a backstory but this is never used to justify their actions.

3. the narration, both the translator and the original author are very good at describing what is happening and the emotions of the characters

Now the things that I didn't love so much are not objectively bad parts of the story in themselves, it's just a more personal taste.

1. Seo Dawon and the members of Red Lotus... they are interesting characters with well-defined personalities and you may like more than one of them... but... *sigh*
Spoiler

they are incredibly unbearable several times, they hide information from Choi Lee-Kyung, they manipulate him, they gaslight him, they ostracize him... god, but I don't hate them, this type of dynamic is resolved later in the story and is never shown as something good or healthy

[collapse]

2. Some arcs that are not so interesting in my opinion are extended somewhat unnecessarily way

Honestly, I love this novel a lot because I was projecting myself onto the protagonist most of the time, lol

For me he is the real one, omg he just like me fr <<less

This MC is honestly one of the most insipid, uninspiring, passive protagonists that I've ever come across. Not just in BL/Yaoi but across everything I've ever read. I think he may have been meant as an everyman kind of character, but at the same time, there's a reason why biographies about average people mostly don't get published and read.

He actually comes across as a sniveling coward at times, and a lot of his conversation is him repeating a word the other party said with a stutter even in relatively innocuous... more>> situations. He doesn't actually have a stutter, it's just that his brain seems to short-circuit rather easily. While I won't judge people IRL for acting like that in critical situations, he's someone who signed up to be a User (dungeoneer in a world where there is real risk of injuries and death while dungeoneering). So it's like in addition to all his other faults, he's not very self-aware in some ways. Since we have access to his thoughts, I don't find him particularly insightful. There are times where he does think something quite deep but those are few and far between and a lot of times it comes across as the author needing to get some exposition in and justify or set the tone for the interaction.

Honestly, the only notable thing about him is his rare class, Necromancer. It is a choice he pretty much blundered into (it's not even a good choice, it just happened to work out for him because of specific circumstances). There is nothing about his personality or character that really makes him critical to the team. If it were a real situation, I would say that any other Necromancer would suffice and probably do better in the circumstances he found himself in. It's actually inexplicable that so many people would be drawn to him. It's explained that his servants seem to be under some kind of geas but other randoms also seem obsessed with him. No, it's probably not because he's particularly attractive the way many BL protagonists are, you can tell from many initial interactions that he has no pretty privilege.

I'm interested in the plot itself, the revenge is quite interesting but with the caveat that it all requires a heavy suspension of disbelief. It's like everybody else forgets he's a necromancer or have not even the slightest idea of what that class does. <<less

My biggest issue with novel is it's world building. There are a multitude of systems the author brings up and never does anything with. One of the first things we ever learn about the MC is his health value yet we never learn how much damage anything does. When he gets injured it's described in terms of real injuries not in health values which is fine but then why have health be stat to begin with. It's the same with basic mobs we don't get a single health value. The... more>> lacking context bleeds into everything with no health values we have no way of telling how strong any one actually is. How much damage anything does is a guessing game.

Skills are brought up though the method of acquiring them is anyone's guess. The author in of the earlier chapters brings up how the Priest class gets skills at level 1. This would lead one to think that skills are gotten by leveling up. Yet the main character is level 42 at book start and hasn't gotten any skills past the first 3 he got upon selecting his class. There are also skill books which are brought up a fair bit later. These could be how skills are generally learned, yet just a bit earlier the MC gets a skill out of no where with neither skill books or levels being the source.

The lacking world building also extends to outside of the game-like systems. Why doesn't the Government take over the dungeons, or if the government isn't strong enough too; why don't the top guilds take over the government. This is never explained. Korea's role geopolitics should be under question as their near neighbor China should be the global superpower due to it's tremendous population. Yet it's not brought up either. The relationship between the dungeons and the world at large is non-existent. The dungeons may as well be in a sperate dimension for all it's worth.

The lacking world building is a detriment to the story as the characters have potential to be interesting and the plot could many ways. However the world may as well not even have systems because the author clearly can't write them. What I mentioned earlier aren't the only inconsistencies. Are the dungeons instanced or not. There is contradictory evidence of either being the case.

All in all of you can look past the major lack of good world building. You may be able to enjoy this novel, but as it stands I cannot recommend it <<less
