Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint

Kim Dokja does not consider himself the protagonist of his own life. Befitting the name his parents gave him, he is a solitary person whose sole hobby is reading web novels. For over a decade, he has lived vicariously through Yu Junghyeok, the main character of the web novel Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse (TWSA).

Through Junghyeok, Dokja has experienced secondhand the trials of repeatedly regressing in time, in search of an end to life-threatening “scenarios” that force people to act out narratives for the amusement of god-like “Constellations.”

After reading 3,149 chapters—long after all other readers lost interest—Dokja finally resigns himself to the story ending. However, he receives an enigmatic message from the author, stating that the story will soon be monetized, before his surroundings suddenly go dark.

He swiftly realizes that fiction has become reality and he is now living through TWSA. Although he is the singular omniscient reader of the events yet to come, his success in the scenarios is not guaranteed—but perhaps his advantage will empower him to step into the protagonist role that never suited him before.

This is my first time writing a review for something, mainly because I find it tiring.

I really couldn't help it, 'cause about half the reviews are criticizing a novel of 551 chapters after reading few chapters, at most half of it. But this story is more amazing moving forward. (And more sad).

The plot is riveting and every arc keeps me at the edge of my seat that I couldn't stop reading unless I forced myself to. Kim Dokja, the MC, is three-dimensional and has a tragic, yet relatable backstory:

Spoiler

Abusive father, mother who wanted to protect him but seen as neglectful to KDJ instead; the bullying from school and the harassment he got from reporters after his mother killed his father, then publishing a book about it that lead to more harassment. His su*cide attempt when he was 15.

These are all made him come off as being distant to his companions at first, however, as the story progressed they became his newfound family and he would do anything to protect them. Even at the cost of his life.

[collapse]

However, one of the selling points of this novel is the relationships between the characters. Their unwavering loyalty to each other is admirable.

Spoiler

Much like KDJ who's willing to sacrifice himself for his companions, they also do everything they could to save him. No matter how much time it took. It's especially touching when Yoo Joonghyuk himself took the initiative to bring KDJ back, hopping from one timeline to another for years to spread TWS, so KDJ could remember.

Wow. Just wow. Don't listen to the pessimistic reviews; this is an amazing novel. Simply searching it online will tell you that; you'll be flooded with this novel's fanart. It is also exceedingly popular in Korea. Oh, um... there's no BL... lololol. I have not completed it, but let's face it already. The JonghyukXDokja ship will only sail in our dreams (and also Uriel's. XD). TXT. My lips are sealed; you never who's watching or listening.

This story will get you hooked effortlessly and, if it doesn't, it's only a matter... more>> of time. There are a hell lot of twists and turns (your IQ will be tested), and the protagonist is kind of a genius (scratch that, he is a genius. He avoids calamities that appear impossible to thwart as though its nothing). The plot is very much unique; it's not something you find easily. Highly recommended. <<less

Overall, looking back, I really did enjoy ORV. You can tell how well the author planned everything out from the beginning, hints given from the start revealing themselves in the end. Each of the story significant parts play their roles extremely well, and everything is connected in the end. Things considered plot holes earlier on were explained - how well is another question. If you get pretty far in, maybe around c300, I really do recommend reading until the epilogue; it feels somewhat conclusive and ties up everything from pre-epilogue.

All... more>> the characters were well written and enjoyable to read about - I can't think of anyone that I sincerely hated every appearance of, which is rare. Every main-side character has their development, though I do feel a bit iffy about the ones introduced later on, and the lack of incorporation they had except as plot devices. I liked all the main trio, especially the MC, Kim Dokja. The world-building was great, too.

While reading though, there were certainly parts more enjoyable than others. The short c291-299 arc really was one of the best, but getting through c300-400 was... tiring. The fights are, as others have said, sometimes repetitive; it can have very little actual action and just the same, repetitive stuff. If I have to read one more line about telling stories I think I'll go insane though I plan to eventually reread.

The worst part about ORV is, I'd say, the insane deus ex machina. The lack of any sort of threat or risk; if someone dies, they'll be revived.
Spoiler

This was especially pertinent with the reincarnation of Yoo Sangah. At that point, the scenarios themselves lost all meaning.

[collapse]
KDJ sacrifices himself? No, he doesn't. I don't particularly mind the self-sacrifice - it's not ridiculous, nor especially naive, like a shounen, but it relaxes the meaning of said action and feels like an asspull. Again, unlike most people, I don't think it's as bad as it's considered. It's just repetitive. At the start, especially, everything that happens is planned, and while it seems cool at first, it reiterates the lack of risk. Well, it gets better.

Continuing from that, yes, the deus ex machinas are explained in the end, but said explanation feels inadequate. You still have to get through what, 500 chapters of plot armour before you get the explanation?

So now, , , my gripes with the epilogue.

Spoiler

I like the Oldest Dream stuff, and the linking together of KDJ, HSY and YJH. Everything falls into place, small hints are explained and tied together. But it's just so, , , badly explained. From where did this specific loop originate? Is the loop infinite and unchangeable? I feel like the ending should involve the breaking of the loop, instead of the continuing of the cycle for dubious reasons (why would they do what they did?). The open ending didn't really feel that great to read - I would've preferred something more conclusive, tying up the loose ends literally created in the very same epilogue.

What I hated the most though, was how the epilogue rendered the rest of the book more... meaningless? It emphasises futility and... I don't know, after following KDJ's journey to create his own ending for all those chapters, for it all to end up as an endless, unbreakable cycle...

I'm not sure why anyone reading reviews would want to see me complain about the epilogue. Still, I did like the epilogue, with all its flaws. The way it tied everything together does balance out all my gripes.

[collapse]

Despite the complaints here, I did love ORV. The world-building, the completeness of the story, and the characters (especially the main trio!) really were great. The entire webnovel was enjoyable to read. Would I recommend it? Well, I loved ORV, but it depends on whether you can get through the repetitive parts, until everything unravels itself. <<less

If you're looking for a review that goes deep into why ORV is a good novel then this isn't the review for you. I read this story not paying attention to any themes or deep ideas. I read this for easy entertainment.

this is the kind of novel that makes you cry, laugh, somewhat hate the main character because of their habits of self-sacrificing, and pull all-nighters just to finish.

KDJ is a hilarious protag mixed with smart yet emotionally dumb when it comes to people and he never fails to piss... more>> people off.

YJH is a more silent but has a lot of action protag. He's caring for his teammates and clearly has a difficult time moving on from the past but with the help of friends and his sister, he gradually moves forward with them. His actions and behavior are easily explained with his 1863 regressions (even the first three are pretty damn traumatizing based off of what KDJ remembers).

HSY is the one who connects YJH and KDJ. She's the smartest and most sensible. Her pessimistic view clashes with YSA's optimistic view but they manage to work together. She's the voice of reason whenever KDJ or YJH are going to do some lowkey self sacrificing stuff.

With KDJ and YJH always running off doing their own thing, HSY is left to lead the group. Though she gives off the lone wolf vibe, she's willing to cooperate with people who share the same goal (s) with her.

And my favorite part is how this story mixes in mythologies and stories without the reader being left confused. They have greek mythology, hindu mythology, Wizard of Oz, cultivation, etc. These new settings or stories are presented in an easy to digest way that even if I skim some paragraphs I can have a rough idea of what's happening.

Spoiler

My favorite part is when Persephone and Hades basically adopted KDJ. It felt so natural and earned after learning how bad KDJ's childhood was and how KDJ's mother failed at parenting.

Another thing is KDJ's tendancy to throw away his life to ensure his Nebula survives for the next scenario. It's frustrating because the characters are experiencing the trauma of losing a loved one so many times they practically have to put a leash on him just to make sure he doesn't do it again.

There are also some family fluff like when they took a company break. KDJ is given a scenario where he has to fulfill everyone's wish and it's just fun.

The children still act like children despite the apocolypse.

Anna Croft gets some character development that yoy don't really notice until she saves YJH.

[collapse]

Edit: was skimming through some reviews and I'm starting to doubt that those who finished or almost finished the novel and giving it 1 star reviews are reading the same novel as the rest of us? I get it if someone who only read up to 100 chapters gives a low rating since the story starts into the real meat of the plot afterwards. But completed and still asking
Spoiler

what made KDJ make YJH regress 1864 times? How YJH was born if he didn't have parents??did you not read the epilogue?

[collapse]
I 100% understand that not everyone will like the same things I like. But what I don't understand is when someone "completes" a novel but a) asks questions that were answered in the novel and b) gives the novel a low rating since the question "wasn't answered".

ORV is not a novel that's going to spoon feed the readers answers to the questions that they create in their story. The largest theme in ORV is interpretation, especially with KDJ being an unreliable narrator. It's only when you read the epilogue does the story truly "ends". <<less

After reading this far & reading the reviews, I can understand the vast different pov of readers. There were times I felt intrigued with the plot, theories and characters, but there were also times when I felt like skipping, stopping or even dropping the novel. But one thing I won't forget is the moment that I've decided to continue reading this novel.

Most of the important explanations were given past the 300 chapters mark, which imo, explained those questions & frustrations raised by most of the readers who'd stopped reading early.... more>> No one should be forced into reading a novel with 500+ chapters which they're not interested in. However, calling this novel a plagiarism of many other similar theme novels is unjustified. Theme is the boundary that categories similarities. Parts that are similar, do not always mean that they are copies, at least, not for this novel.

***Below contains spoilers***

When passing the 150th chapter, I'm just like those unsatisfied readers. I had started questioning the purpose of the scenarios, the purpose of the characters and even the purpose of the plot. Is there even a meaning for this novel to exist? But after 400+ chapters, I realised that I was just like the characters in this novel, questioning the exact same thing, searching for the end even though knowing quite well that the end might not be what I desire. This feeling just gave me a sense of deja vu, as if I'm doing what I'm reading. The faint crossover of the world of the novel and my reality. I hate the theory of "all go 'round in a circle" which explains that there is no single point of beginning or end in the wheel of the universe. I feel suffocated when learning that everything is just going forth without a clear direction. Then what I've fought/worked so hard for, is there even a meaning to all I've done so far. And all these feelings and questions were written in this novel. And I share a surprisingly large proportion of understanding with the characters regarding the "end" despite the suffocating feelings still remained. The feeling as if I have gained the "omniscient reader viewpoint skill". This is why I feel a familiar yet strange attachment to this novel. Instead of bridging, for me, it's more like blurring the line between fiction and reality in my world, as if I was reading my world, which is precisely the plot of the novel. Yes, I hate explaining this in an endless loop too but there's no other better way of explaining this except for the reader to gain insight by themselves when they reached a certain degree of understanding.

Above is a long-ass paragraph of explaining the 1st point of my interest in this novel. 2nd point would be the "probability" used. Everything happens due to probability. If it had reached a threshold, then it occurred, otherwise it'll just continue raising its probability. It's like 2 sides of a coin. When you wish for the head, you'll keep throwing the coin until the "probability" of getting the head surpassed that of the tail. When this happened, it strengthened your belief, when in actuality, the probability of getting either a head or a tail is the same. When the repetition of coin throwings resulted in a surplus of "probability" in getting a head, you stopped throwing as this is the conclusion you desire. I really like this theory as if it's to mock most of the "facts" that we had learn so far, are they real or they are just an existence of probabilty, in our case, made/decided by humans. Where the truth lies?

3rd point is the characters. Many novels failed to explore the depth of the secondary charcters and often had forgotten about the "extras". This novel did a good job in giving the back stories and development for the characters other than the mcs. I like how the the MCs are divided into a reader, an author, and a character. This is new and fresh while the 3 of them got equal importance to the plot development. And also the novel showed some practical sides of characters like how selfish and greedy or coward they can be despite being the mcs.

Finally, there are some really good plots that are worth reading. 3 scenarios that I value are:

1. First scenario. It has some cliche parts like how participants are required to kill in order to live. And I've forseen the crazy humans massacre scene and also the utilisation of other organism. But one thing that interested me was how real that kdj intention was to not saving more people when he could have saved more.

2. The flag war (king of absolute throne). This scenario is interesting with the introduction of "prophet" and the planning and encounters with opponents.

3. Peaceland. I really like the idea of showing different pov of MCs and other extras. At the same time, giving more insight regarding the "disaster" and "outer gods/beings".

Despite the good points, the novel still can't escape from the cliches and plot holes. Like the parts I genuinely hate was the damsel-in-distressed plot where kdj was repeatedly being kidnapped/sacrificed, urging his companions to rescue him. Plus, the childhood of kdj is another big cliche. And just like other low ratings had mentioned, I'm disinterested in how the world seems to be revolving around the kdj (plot armour). However, we often forget that, if the coincidents and luck did not revolve around the MC, is he/she still considered as the MC, the centre of the novel? Most importantly, it is not how the MCs are standing in the limelight, but, if they make sense in that world. According to this novel's theme and genre plus the plot, it's acceptable and understandable. Just that, although I can understand, doesn't mean that I like them. Just like the subway line, it operates not to entertain, just that, it's needed for the world to function. Same concept, those blant repetitive scenarios and characters are needed for the plot. If these cliches are the foundation for the plots to progress, so be it. I still hate them tho, almost killing myself to read the repetitive fights between MCs and those stubborn & obsessive constellations.

So, it just comes down to the percentage of your liking. My opinions and review will definitely be biased as this novel has a special place in my heart. However, I have tried my best to be as objective as possible when writing this review. I personally think that this novel tied up its loose ends pretty good. The deprivation of momentum and ideas was evident at certain points where the scenarios seemed to be stretchy and abundant. I have even skipped to the last 2 chapters to have a read at the "epilogue". Although it seemed like another plot hole to me, but due to the nature of this novel, I understand why it had come to that conclusion.

Hope that this review will provide some helpful insight/info to potential readers who are deciding whether to pick up this novel or not, and for those who decide whether to complete the novel from where they'd stopped reading, and also for those readers who had finished reading the last chapter and are looking for some pov of other readers.

One particular quote from this novel that I favour is, "... Reading the same story again back from the start will allow a reader to experience a different understanding/interpretation of the very same story... although the words remained the same... The overlooked gaps, the overlooked characters, and the overlooked vision might surface with rereading... " <<less

I love this novel so much

The character development is on point, no romance, no harem, just some relationship that's not too much

Yes KDJ seems like he is just lucky, in truth he is actually smart and skilled to be able to do most stuff he need to do

Less stat shown in late part because they want the reader aka us to try solve it ourselves

Antagonist hmmm, they're good enough to kill the co but kdj outsmart most of it

In a place where god-like constelation and imagination exist, will dead be the end? Probably not. It's a book, a book have end but not every story have the same end.

The restrictions is the point of the novel, they are in a scenario and must complete it. It's like a ticking bomb timer because most scenario have time limit.

I won't say anything lengthy (?) as I just finished it just a few seconds ago so I'm still merely on the height if my emotions. I just felt kinda bummed on the people doing the review without even reading everything. How can you give a proper review when you don't even know the end? You can just say it isn't to your taste in some other platforms and not in the review section though it would be nice if they put an edited version of their comment after they... more>> read everything and they still don't like it then it's justifiable. But anyway, this novel just highlights what a reader really is, it might be one of my delusions in sympathizing a character from a story but I really liked the premise and the theme it gives us "readers" (especially the FOURTH WALL lol you get it?). It's a long read honestly and I don't see Kim Dokja as OP, if he is then things would be too simple, yes he did have advantages but it was later explained in the latter chapters about all the whys and hows and whos, it's kinda confusing towards the end and yeah some loopholes do exist.. But even so, it's still great fot me.. And I think the author wants us to utilize our imaginations to further complete this novel. Aaaand that's it. I love this novel. A wholesome novel. The plot is surely something you will enjoy a lot. I will just say one word. Recursion.

Other than that, it's very pleasant to look how characters grow affectionate to each other and how hard it is for MC to keep up living in the world that he knows the end of. The relationships are well made and feel truly realistic. The growth of MC doesn't look like that of munchkin as he is not the main character of that world, even though he grows really fast.

The novel... more>> might get slightly boring in its later parts. The ending is something extremely simple and predictable, but at the same time shocking and puts you into confusion. Overall, it makes the story even better.

Ignore negative reviews that didn't read at least past c200, because most of their complains (lack of foreshadowing, plot armor, characters without character etc.) are resolved, or largely reduced in the later chapters. I acknowledge some flaws of this novel, I also don't think it's the best one I've read, and I also think it's flawed, but despite this flaws, I've really, REALLY enjoyed it.

(All spoilers are marked, so don't worry about them)

First, I will start with some flaws.

I hate how this novel throws out some of the... more>> characters after their story arc has ended. They literally get pushed in the background and don't have almost anything to do. One of the examples is
Spoiler

MC's mother

[collapse]
, who when she was introduced was one of my favourite characters, but after her story arc has ended, she almost didn't appear at all. The novel later on acknowledges this problem, and explains why does it happen, but I don't really like that explanation.

Second is the lack of descriptions. I don't know if it's a common thing for all webnovels, or if it's just this one. (ORV is my first webnovel I've read). It annoyed me really much, especially when character's appearance isn't described, so I imagine hey my own way, and then 200 chapters later it says "she tied her ponytail".

Third is predictability of some events. Not all, most not actually. But after some time, when the situation is explained, you can predict what the MC is going to do. It isn't really that big of a flaw, because it doesn't happen many times, and usually even though you can predict it, it's hard to really predict how is he going to do it.

Fourth, DBZ syndrome of characters. Basically introducing too much characters, so that some of the old ones get forgotten. Kind of connected to the first point, but not really.

That's the more major flaws I have for this novel. There are more, but I don't really consider them that important. But before I start talking about good things, let's first refute some flaws other reviews have brought.

MC is overpowered - not really. He is, compared to normal person. He isn't compared to the world. He's not the only character who knows the future, he isn't the strongest and he most of the time starts fight at a disadvantage. But he often uses his brain to turn situation to his favor.

MC constantly asspulls - At the beginning (for about 100 chapters, maybe a little more, I don't remember which chapter was the
Spoiler

Sixth scenario arc

[collapse]
), solutions he uses to turn the table aren't foreshadowed, that's why people think it's an asspull, but later authors acknowledge their mistake and start foreshadowing it a bit earlier. Sometimes few chapters before, sometimes dozen chapters before.

Characters are cliche and thin as paper - That's kinda true, but also kind of not. Characters apart from few (
Spoiler

[collapse]
) rarely when get their story arcs. They do get it a few times, some develop, while some struggle to stay the same, some have complicated relationships with eachother, and some even straight-up change. But it doesn't happen that often, and even if it does. It's hard for me to think of a character that got more than three story arcs.

But while they don't really have their story arcs that much, they aren't really thin. People think that way because of low amount of exposition. And most of the cliche characters actually have something more going in their head, you just sadly don't get to read about it that often.

Okay, now we can finally talk about positives. And boy, there's lot of them.

First of all, plot twists. They are amazing. After reading you can tell they've been planned from the first chapter. They're really hard to predict (although not impossible), and they've been foreshadowed earlier. Some even straight-up from beginning. I absolutely love them.

Second, (major spoilers)

fourth wall breaks. I won't really explain it, cuz people afraid of spoilers won't even read this, but I'll say one thing. The fourth-wall breaks are really, really well done and amazing. The ending basically implies that you may be MC and not even know it. It's awesome.

Third, ending. I can't really explain anything because spoilers, but the ending is one of the best endings to a story I've ever seen.

Fourth, the action rarely when slows down. It does, but it isn't like in normal books, mangas or anime, where after every major arc you get a little break, foreshadowing into next arc, introducing etc. Here, it goes like this: major story arc ends, the epilogue of the arc immediately starts the next one, and without slowing down you're constantly moivng through the plot. That's actually part of the reason why other characters rarely get story arc, it's because the plot is constantly moving.

I could go on and on about why I love this novel so much, but this review is already quite long, and I wrote it mainly to encourage other people to read it, not to express my own thoughts and feelings about it. <<less

So far I’d say the novel is decent at best. There are a few points which are quite annoying, for example Kim Dokja’s constant self-evaluation, he’s embarrassed or ashamed by thinking of the characters in some way or is ashamed because he would give up on saving someone. Eventually someone would come and be like “it’s okay, I don’t know anything about you but isn’t it okay to trust people?” and he will be fine for like 30 chapters until it happens again.

There is also the fact that he is... more>> super weak throughout the whole thing, so far, there are very few moments where he’s actually a part of the stronger characters. He is always using some loophole or Yoo Jonghyuk to barely survive or he dies but revives. I don’t quite understand how he is narrative grade but still needs Yoo Jonghyuk to save his ass in every moment, I know he’s hurt but he should have recovered enough to easily be able to crush lower - upper grade constellations but has to run away from even the lower grade ones.

Anyway, if you are able to get through that I think it would be a decent read. <<less

Not the most original concept, but well executed, to the point that the negatives almost feel like "not a bug, but a feature".

I enjoyed the meta theme, the word building again isn't something new but it's still cool, the plot comes together well and there aren't major loose ends, the ending is satisfying, the characters all have a reasonable depth and growth.

Overall the writing, characters, plot, wordbuilding, pacing I would say amount to a 4.5/5, they are great but not amazing; alas I'm not a critic so I'll just rate... more>> it based on my enjoyment which was 5/5, this novel messed up my sleep schedule. Would recommend. <<less

So good. I binge read all the chapters in exchange for my sleep lol.

The character development of both KDJ and the side characters is really good. And their relationship development is also equally well written

The world building is top notch, the action is well written and the plot is addictive. And the comedy is on point as well lol.

The MC is calm, smart, practical and rational. And doesn't do dumb things

Hmmm how to elaborate this. It's like..... you know how shounen MCs tend to go out of his way to try saving everyone even at the expense of them and their friends potentially being in danger? This MC does not do that nor does he allow himself to get used. The subway arc is an example of that.
