On the Third-Year of Kaihuang, as the Great Sui unfolds its curtains to welcome the glorious Tang Dynasty in succession to the Northern Dynasty, Yang Jian established a secret agency, the Jiejian Bureau in preparation to unify the world.

In a stormy night filled with snow, a convoy of tribute sent by the Kingdom of Khotan was ambushed and massacred with not a living soul left behind. The Second Commander of the Jiejian Bureau, Feng Xiao came forth to investigate the case under Imperial Orders.

A gathering of storms would soon take place in a little city which sat on the frontier, called the City of Six Crafts, where all the top martial powers across the lands would meet.

The ever successful Second Commander Feng meets a dead end when he ran into a Master Daoist with ailing health.

All would be unknown if they had never crossed paths, but once their paths crossed, Second Commander Feng realized this ailing man had more secrets than himself.

This novel is absolutely perfect. It has just become my favourite danmei novel. My sole regret is that I wouldn't be able to read it any more than this and won't see Feng-Cui pair anymore. Rarely has a novel ever made me this emotional to part with it.

I rarely ever get to the end of most danmeis, but this one was an exception. I was literally screaming in my head "please don't end" and even cried few times when the end was finally near.

For me this novel is an obvious... more>> 10/10, due to, more than any other aspect, only FengCui and their brilliant chemistry. I love them to bits and would keep coming back here just to see their interactions again. I never leave reviews on any danmei novels either, but this one I had to. The emotional impact is top-notch. The plot was perhaps so-so, I liked some of the side characters and really loved Xiao Lu. However, the main leads Cui Buqu and Feng Xiao are the ones I will never forget after reading this.

Their journey has been exactly what I want from a fictional romance; enemy to loves with extreme slow burn, that it leaves your heart burning for more. It's so incredibly well-done that I have no words at all. From being enemies using each other for their own reasons, to being accomplices, partners in investigations, to reluctant 'friends' to finally lovers was exceptionally beautiful. It was also extremely satisfying. The pleasure my heart felt is obviously unable to be described in mere words. But I love them and hope they'll have a great life together <<less

Perfect, just perfect.

The novel isn't very popular like its prequel, Thousand Autumns, which is definetly a shame!

The text is easy to read and understand. There's no boring chapters, and it's very well written.

... more>> MC, Cui Buqu, Is cunning, very smart and always scheming. I like how he isn't OP like some MCs, instead being chronically ill (so no martial arts) and described as looking sickly and ordinary.

The ML, Feng Xiao is the opposite of Cui Buqu. It's mentioned many times in the novel how handsome and beautiful he is, and he doesn't deny it. He's also not lacking in martial arts and is very strong.

The novel begins with Feng Xiao taking Cui Buqu to interrogate about a mu*der case, not knowing his true identity. From there it progresses and the tension between them is very much there. It is slow burn, but Feng Xiao does flirt with Cui Buqu a lot in the first half of the book too. The actual romance is more like, chapter 90 and up.

I truly have no complaints about this novel. I'll definetly add it to my reread list. If you haven't read it yet, this is your sign! <<less

Bickering enemies-to-lovers main couple. If you are a fan of this trope, you know what you're going into. Both MC and ML feel quite refreshing, their relationship is far from being stale. If I had to describe their relationship, it's basically a contest of who is more thick faced and ready to drag the other's face through the dirt in front of a huge crowd more. But not in an abusive toxic way. Just very schadenfreude. Their antics are pretty hilarious.

Points down for few weaker parts in the plot and... more>> execution. Overall though a definite banger. <<less

Bless google docs. You can read the second part by asking for wordpress access to the translator on twitter. It's completed. (Please, it's not hard to create wordpress account and ask for permission. It's completely worth it!)

I prefer this one compared to Thousand Auntums (Qian Qiu) and Estranged.

Its balance between plot, politic, mystery, action, adventure, comedy, and romance is more to my liking. (for clarification, it's focused more heavily on mystery with sprinkle of comedy and romance everywhere).

It's also easier to get into. The characters' motives and the direction... more>> of the story are clear from the start.

The use of both perspectives from main character and male lead are very interesting and works well with the setting.

Spoiler

Feng Xiao's perspective came first before Cui Buqu, but down the road Cui Buqu's perspective is used more because he's the one who solve the mystery more. Anyway I'll say Cui Buqu is the protagonist and Feng Xiao is the male lead

[collapse]

I like how the romance is capable to be such a tease despite they never explicitly state their relationship as official to the end and beyond (extra). It's not a frustrating teasing but a ticklish teasing kind of feeling.

Most characters here are such genius that I think my standard for smart characters has gone up. For example, now I see all characters from Estranged as quite normal in brain area compared to Cui Buqu or even Feng Xiao, which frustatate me a bit when reading that now haha. I don't think there will ever be a second Cui Buqu, Feng Xiao, or even Xiao Lu.

This story also has other notable trademarks that I think I won't forget in years:

Spoiler
    • Characters pitting each other, including the main villains pitting the main characters and vice versa
    • Fake monks, a lot of fake monks, including Cui Buqu's subordinate and Feng Xiao
    • Disguises, a lot of disguises, especially involving Feng Xiao (either he disguised his identity or his identity is used as disguise)
    • Cui Buqu's physical health (or the lack of it) and Feng Xiao's peerless appearance, talent, and personality
[collapse]

If there's a huge letdown to this story, perhaps It's the anticlimatic end of the main villain. But it's climax still a climax.

And also the untold story of some of the side characters. Author told you enough about side characters' backgrounds, but you just want to get to know them more.

~

A bit upset:

Spoiler
    • How Feng Xiao poisoned Cui Buqu at the start just because.... he got reasons, but it's really weak and unacceptable to me. I was quite upset back then, but as I read I kinda forgive him because if not for him Cui Buqu would have died several times over. But I wonder why author like to pull this stuff where male lead doing almost unfrogivable thing to the main characters, hm?
    • no smut TT___TT
with Cui Buqu sickly body I wonder how Feng Xiao will handle it. But honestly no smut is okay too.
      [collapse]
~

I still think it's amazing how author dare to pull stuff that I think other (danmei) authors won't dare to do:

Spoiler
    • making the male lead crossdress and humiliating himself wwww (other authors usually won't do this except it's part of the theme)
    • making the male lead gone bald, moreover he's still is in the end of the story wwww
    • making the main pairing stab each other, like real blood and tears (from me)
    • how Feng Xiao's real (ultimate) weapon (guqin) only out in the last two arcs, moroever it's only the strings, like what the heck author lol. The weapon is too big to be carried everywhere
[collapse]

Author aren't afraid getting scolded by some readers haha, but that's why I like author. <<less

Damn, this novel is one of my favorites now. Hilarious, great plot, sweet slow burn, and great characters. Pretty fast paced and most of the time gets me on the edge of my seat. Like damn so many parts where my heart just races, just so good. I've read thousand autumns (felt so so with it) which is why this novel caught me off guard, just caught my attention more.

The characters are pretty fleshed out, I love them very much specially our MC and ML. I love their interactions so... more>> much, plus the romance just feels natural unlike other novels where they just feel forced. Plus when they get together they dont have a complete flip in personality and be OOC lovey dovey (unlike other novels), they still do it their own ways. Read this if you are interested in narcissist martial artist peac*ck x sickly cold tsundere genius dynamic

Words cannot express how much I love this novel, would recommend 30/10. This is some godtier stuff right here <<less

Don't get me wrong thats a good novel but I had a problem from the start with the face that the ML is a beauty, top marcial artist and very smart. Like wtf then put the miserable MC besides him to glamourise suffering with the following qualities: able to Handel suffering and being really smart. I hate the unbalance

One of the best. The verbal sparring, scheming, backstabbing and constant one upping games between the leads is extremely entertaining throughout. Like all of Meng Xi Shi's story's I've read so far, romance itself is almost entirely missing. But I don't think the story suffers for it. Also, for all the politics, and world building and mystery cases, this story never bored me - and I mention this because I easily and routinely get bored by danmei novels with long complicated plots, even if they have relatively good storytelling. Maybe... more>> it's because there's constant interaction between the leads and the subplots mostly serve as backstage for them to showcase their wittiness and find minor ways to spar with each other. <<less

I think I have a new favourite BL author. I can't think of anything to fault with her stories, except that I wish the romance is spicier lol. But as a fan of ORV who ships the characters anyway I can work with this. It's pretty obvious the MC and ML are into each other anyway and slow burns are the best.

The plot is great, I haven't read a good one in so long, it's pretty intricate yet not boring or too hard to understand, and at the same time... more>> it doesn't spoonfeed all the info like the reader is an idiot.

MC and ML are like Sherlock and Moriarty, except make it BL in a historical Chinese setting. I f*cking love the author's MCs. All of them have more than meets the eye and stand on par with the MLs without using brute force or golden fingers. Even in a mind game here where ML is a smart guy, he also gets played and still is getting played
Spoiler

lmao when MC uses his subordinate's name as his identity when he supposedly came clean I couldn't stop laughing.

[collapse]

The story is intriguing and also funny as heck which I was not expecting. And as a fan of realistic yet unboring slowburns, the author's stories check all the boxes. <<less

I immediately read this after finding out that it has the same universe as Thousand Autumns. As expected, the romance is really slow, but it's worth the read because you will never get bored with all these mu*der cases in every arc that will keep you engrossed in reading all night. The translation is adequate. Thank you for the effort in translating this novel!

Despite the MC having a weak body, he's very determined and is quite intelligent. He's sharp, has a photographic memory, and always thinks 3 steps ahead of... more>> his opponents. Meanwhile, ML is strong at martial arts and doesn't fall behind MC's intelligence. He likes to boast about his beauty a lot, which is the number one beneath the heavens, and likes cleanliness the most. Both MC and ML like to scheme and pit each other. Their teamwork is great when they solve cases, and they slowly begin to rely and trust each other.

It was fun and I enjoyed reading it. This is a gem! Totally worth the read and even though the plot is slightly heavy for me to understand rip my braincells, the flow of the story is really good with all these twists and solving mysteries. I love the interaction between the MC and ML, especially when ML keeps showing off his beauty and teases the MC, and also how the MC secretly cares for ML. THEY ARE BOTH SO CUTE! MUST READ! <<less

Omg! YOU. HAVE. GOT. TO. READ. THIS. NOVEL.

Such a greatness!!

Chemistry is really good and cute between the MC and ML.

It's about solving crimes. MC and ML hate each other and always pin things against each other lol! ML knows how to fight and MC doesn't. But MC is pretty smart and not some damsel in distress that always need ML's saving. That's what I love about this author's MCs. They don't need the ML to save their butt!

Such good a good novel!

This is sooo good. A really really slow-burn romance but it is so much interesting to me. The story is more focused on the plot so for those who come for fluffy romance, this may not be ur cup of tea. The bickering and bantering between MC and ML are hilarious and cute, I enjoyed a lot reading it and had much fun. They are both strong and can stand on their own, a powerful couple which I like it very muchh. The characters are written in flesh and blood,... more>> very lively. The world setting is built well, the development is superb and the plot flows really well and natural.
Spoiler

However, the ending is a bit underwhelming. Still I love FengCui couple so muchhh which could make me ignore that fact XDD. Glad that extras are translated though I still cant get enough to see more FengCui moments so I decide to binge through fan-fictions on Ao3 :D And for the villains, I didnt expect that they die so abruptly in this way, I feel bad for them as well as Tuan Qing He, such a tragic that I thought he would run away with KuHeZhen by the end of the day, however, he was left aloneಥ_ಥ cuz I shipped them : (

For my boy Pei Jing Zhe, did he finally get together with Qiao Xian by the end? I am so curious about them😭 I want him happy as well for not just eating dog food of FengCui all the time lol ;)

Kudos to the translator Dust Bunny for translating it so beautifully. Thanks ChiChi for translating extras as well. Can't praise enough the author, Meng Xi Shi, I love her, she's literally my queen in danmei world. Would re-read it again in the future. This needs more recognition!!! <<less

I'm quite in love with this novel. Seriously, the very first chapter hooked me in. I love the writing and pacing of this novel, not to mention the interaction and bickering of the main couple. Man, you just can't help but love Feng Xiao and Cui Buqu together. Feng Xiao is just too funny and Cui Buqu (babyyy) is just so done with Feng Xiao's bullsh*t. Although Cui Buqu is very weak physically, he can overturn the world with how intelligent he is. As for Feng Xiao, he is indeed... more>> peerless, not only in good looks and martial arts, but also in narcissism (I'm even surprised he was able to fall in love with Cui Buqu). Both of them have really distinct personalities to the point that you would think they're like oil and water. BUT surprise! They actually learned how to work together despite their differences and priorities. They even managed to show how they care for one another without saying anything.

Anyway, although this novel has a fair amount of humor, it also has a fair amount of action, drama and mystery. Also, since I'm somewhat new to Chinese BL novels, it was kind of a struggle for me to remember all information about a person or a place, especially the names, but it was a good challenge for me and my brain to store all those info and connect the dots later on in the plot. Anyhow, this novel really is a masterpiece and deserves 6/5 stars rating. <<less

Wow! This was quite a wonderful read. It had all the elements that make you keep reading it without break. I have read half of the other famous novel by the same author, 'Thousand Autumns' and was quite impressed because let's admit it, you don't come across many Chinese novels having a good plot without loopholes and the writing was really good (or should I say translation was good) without any far fetched drama and that too in historical wuxia genre.

I heard that this can be considered as sequel to... more>> TA but didn't really see many overlapping points between two. While this is also a martial arts novel, TA is more into exploring martial arts and techniques have some magical aspect to them. But Peerless is more heavily centered on mystery and intrigue. Arguably, ML is top martial artist and fights like after every three chapters but I was always more concerned with how MC is going to tackle the situation.

Plot is written brilliantly, characters are three dimensional and you come to understand them and why they acted the way they did. I couldn't even hate antagonist and would always look forward to MC and him confronting each other. MC is highly intelligent with retentive memory and vast knowledge though has a sickly body but that doesn't stop him at all. ML is also intelligent and while he may be a bit ruthless, he is quite likeable. Romance is slow but the interaction between MC and ML is really enjoyable.

This novel is really worth reading! I hope more people discover this gem. <<less

My only regret is reading this so fast. I loved this novel SO much. The banter between the two are incredible, and brought me to laughter every time. I honestly binged this and it’s one of the reasons why I fell back in love reading Danmei.

This is the same universe as Thousand Autumns, which I also absolutely adored. You don’t have to read Thousand Autumns to understand this novel at all, but I enjoyed the little tidbits included being in the same universe.

While I am helplessly in love with the... more>> dynamic of the CP, don’t forget the plot. The plot was really good also, and a really good mystery. If you’ve ever read Golden Stage, you would probably also love this. If you haven’t read Golden Stage, try these two out!

Feng Xiao is so funny, and I love him so much. Cui Buqu also took my heart and crushed it, because he is so cute and so cold at the same time. They’re amazing and I love the power couple dynamic. <<less

I absolutely loved this novel. The intricacies of the plot was immediately recognizable to be the works of Meng Xi Shi, if you like mystery, crime then this novel is really for you.

However I must say that this novel is not for you if you are reading it only for the romance. I personally loved that the novel shows how two strangers develop their relationship through their encounters with one another, and the way the author creates a plot that links two characters who would've otherwise been two sides of... more>> the same coin. Through their many experiences and life or death situations, the two develop their feelings which can be seen throughout the novel that they eventually come to realize and accept.

Characters

The two protagonists work together, one with unapparelled genius wits and the other with peerless martial prowess, to solve cases regarding the empire for their respective sides. Their loyalty, trust, respect and rivalry towards one another are part of their vastly different personalities, even though on the surface they can be seen as the classic stoic and shameless duo.

Most of the characters play their part in the novel without any unnecessary cannon fodder while the 'villains' each have their own motives that eventually lead to the climax. I personally think that the side characters are quite interesting, with their own backstories that I do wish the author went deeper into.

Cons

This wouldn't be a complete review if I don't talk about the negatives. The largest fault of this novel is the introduction that I think might've been an error on the author's part, where at the very beginning Feng Xiao who is portrayed as a germaphobe in the novel is touching these corpses and is seen as a very stoic character, is vastly different to how he is presented later in the rest of the novel. The other point is that I do feel like there could've been more story on other characters, but that's about it, otherwise this novel is definitely one of my favorites and deserves all five stars. <<less

This was such a wonderful novel...

I have to admit, some part of me wanted to slap the ML in the first few chapters XD The MC and ML had a slow romance, but the romance was done really well. The various plots in this novel was very interesting and complicated. The villain wasn’t a really bad person either, and I just couldn’t hate him at all.

The MC is very calm and collected, regardless of his situation. He is also very intelligent and not only that, he is very determined to... more>> live despite his broken body. I find him very admirable.

The ML is a narcissist, proud and confident, but he is a strong fighter and he naturally has a ruthless side to him. He is also quite witty, although not as much as the MC (naturally). To me, I thought that he was a very interesting character.

Although their relationship developed slowly, their bond is very strong. They will never let each other die, and the way the dig pits for each other made it very enjoyable. Not only that, both of them complements the other very beautifully. I will never ever regret reading this : D <<less

For my enjoyment, it was a 5 star, I loved their bickering throughout the story and how they built up their trust towards each other. Spoiler

I will say the ending was very abrupt, but the extras made up for it. One issue I can say was the villain of the story, Xiao Lu. His ending and buildup were fine but for me fell down towards the end and I felt he could have been developed some more. Some other side characters I felt could have benefited from some more developed.
