On the Third-Year of Kaihuang, as the Great Sui unfolds its curtains to welcome the glorious Tang Dynasty in succession to the Northern Dynasty, Yang Jian established a secret agency, the Jiejian Bureau in preparation to unify the world.

In a stormy night filled with snow, a convoy of tribute sent by the Kingdom of Khotan was ambushed and massacred with not a living soul left behind. The Second Commander of the Jiejian Bureau, Feng Xiao came forth to investigate the case under Imperial Orders.

A gathering of storms would soon take place in a little city which sat on the frontier, called the City of Six Crafts, where all the top martial powers across the lands would meet.

The ever successful Second Commander Feng meets a dead end when he ran into a Master Daoist with ailing health.

This has to be one of my most favorite novels I have read of all time! From our main characters Cui Buqu and Feng Xiao and their interactions with one another to the great plot itself, the story is filled with comedy, action, politics and mystery, not to mention that it has a wonderful slow-burn romance between the two. They're journey from being enemies to friends to lovers was such a fun and hilarious ride, I couldn't let go of the novel after finishing it for a while.

The translator also... more>> did such a wonderful job translating the story so we all could read it, however the translator sadly made their account private due to personal reasons so people who weren't able to read the entire novel after ch 78 before then might have a hard time finding the translation if they didn't get permission from the translator. Luckily, I found a EPUB version of the rest of the novel on Asianovel after scrolling though google for who knows how long, so I was able to read this masterpiece until it's end.

Despite the large hole in my heart this has left me, I have no regrets reading this and definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a hilarious slow-burn romance with intriguing characters and plot. <<less

I have created an account here especially to give a review of this great novel. After reading a lot of novel, I couldn't find any that would pull me in until I found this one. Fantastic! The romance is slow, but you'll love the main characters who tease each other all the time. Live IT!

An interesting an engaging political mystery in the wuxia genre, featuring a super smart investigator and a flashy and OP investigator. So fun to watch them "pit" against each other while working together and falling for each other!

Overall this was so f*cking good. Literary a hidden gem

The plot was so good with each arc so beautifully and interestingly written, full of mystery and hidden conspiracy.

I actually really love the MC character. He really knows how to deal with his enemy and f*cked them up. I just love how smart he is. I love how he pit his enemy and even ML and despite having weak body that can die anytime, he doesn't give up and at the end he still alive. Though he also recklessly put himself in danger.

As for ML..... The narcissist peacock.... I don't like him (though at the end he became a bit likable) but I also don't hate him, just a bit dislike might exist.

As for the side characters, I love the humour and comedy the character brought in the story.

Relationship between MC & ML, this is One of thing I find that was written very well. From being Enemy to Lovers, the relationship build up with smooth and slow pace and felt very natural and I love that.

The romance is slow pace and yeah, it's platonic love and though I am not a fan of platonic love (i have dirty mind) I am surprise I am actually pretty contain with it. ... more>>

But, here also lies the problem. Though MC & ML chemistry is very good, but I am conflicted. Their relationship is very unique and different from all the BL couple I know. I don't hate that, it's unique and refreshing but it just that I am not use to it much. They both tsunder and refuse to confess their feeling, especially MC..... Tsundere action can be sometimes cute but I am not usually fan of it and even after their relationship changed they still pit others, especially MC and they still bicker with the others (i actually enjoyed the bickering toh). Well, I wasn't expecting them to be lovey dovey but without even being lovey dovey their relationship could have been different in better way..... like some other rare bl non lovey-dovey couple. Though I love and enjoy their relationship, it's actually total not my type of taste.

The below spoiler is just me ranting.

I am so conflicted with how ML treated MC..... I mean he literary harmed MC by giving him drug which lead to MC disease to get more serious...... ok it was in the past and ML at that time didn't knew MC or liked him but what about after he fell for MC, nothing much changed. MC still get hurt in every arc though it not life threatening most of the time (thanks to ML) but he still get hurt and one time it was him who stabbed MC. Well, I understand it was to save MC but I still can't take it. The fact that for ML as long as MC is not in life threatening situation and MC is alive, it's ok action...... kinda hurt. because MC has a weak body and ML being super good talented Martial artist I was hoping for ML to be very protective type after he fell for MC and protect MC from every harm but well, this is not that kind of story and neither they are that kind of couple and I am so not used to it. It selfish desire but I want ML to be super protective of MC....... let MC stop getting hurt. What the use of being grandmaster in Martial Arts if you can't even protect your love one from getting hurt.... sigh !!

Well, thankfully I was so happy with the last chapter as how ML left his fight in search of MC and to protect him and how he finally confessed. and for that I would like to thank that twin girl for reminding ML about MC being in danger or who knows if MC would still have been alive or not

But after that they both returned to being tsundere and bickering with each other.

As a person for whom story starting and ending also matters a lot, the story in here actually ended kinda at hanging, thankfully there was extra and the story continued there for a bit. If it wasn't for the extra it would truly have been very disappointing. Plus The way main villian died......

Xiao Lu just died like that..... I wasn't able to digest it as he caused so much trouble for them in the whole series but then he died because of poison that too the one he got while protecting MC and even giving his remaining power to MC before he died........ um it almost gave me the illusion that he liked MC in that way. may be he did.... lol.

And the seventh prince died by feeding too much blood to the worm.... like why?? If he has his secret weapon (the creature in underground) why become a host for worms that dangerous. Wasn't he suppose to be smart guy too?? But then he died of like that without being able to use the worm he nourished.

I'll re-read it after reading thousand autumns...... heard it was like the prequel of this..... I should have read that one 1st to enjoy and understand things more better.

Starts slow, I didn’t warm up to this book until about 30% in, but the burn turned into a fire I was completely hooked. Not just on the pair, but the plot itself. Really good stuff.

Absolutely brilliant... not a second of boredom... the paint was good... brilliant storyline... amazing characters.... it was a worthy read... don't expect to much romance... just a bit of light flirting here and there and that's if... but other than that there is nothing to say bad about this novel... one of my most favorite novels ever!!! Thank you so much for the author and the translators for bringing me this piece of joy!!!...

efinitely top-tier novel. At first I was disappointed bcs it was quite similar to the author's other novel, but was so happy that I continued reading it and ofcourse me contunuing reading it does not mean I was just forced to but I was have been captivated to their journey. It made my heart so warm and beat so hard. The story and all is perfect. It gave me the same feeling as reading MDZS but holy damn the BL is like so little. Barely there I feel like my heart gonna die from wanting some heart aching confession. It’s tiring. But the story is very engaging and endearing.

I want to say that this novel is amazing! I began to read it because of a thousand autumns, but gradually I got distracted and did not even immediately remember that there was one author - these novels are very different (I love both!)

I liked this novel a lot. The protagonists, Cui Buqu and Feng Xiao, are several levels above the masses. CB is a genius willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. Although he has no martial arts, he is still able to best those stronger than him using his brain cells. FX is gorgeous and outrageous. His martial arts skills are top notch. He knows he's a stunner and isn't humble about acknowledging it. 😂

Although the protags start their relationship off on a bad footing, they learn how... more>> to respect, trust, and rely on each other. They are a bickering couple but are cute in a warped way.

Recommended if you enjoy a more complex plot.

FX works in an organization that reports directly to the emperor. He was tasked to solve a crime. He ends up arresting CB cause he thinks CB is suspicious. CB heads an organizations that directly reports to the empress. FX didn't know CB's identity. CB was on a different assignment.

They end up working together and discovering a secret organization. The Thirteen Pavilions is trying to overthrow the current dynasty. The protags foils plots and mu*der attempts. They save the day and end up falling for each other.

SPOILER...

...

The biggest spoiler is that the emperor's granddaughter had a twin. That twin was thought to be dead at first but she survived and was raised by the leader of the Thirteen Pavilion. The twin was the insider who conspired with the enemy.

The overall plot was interesting but a little boring, it brought nothing new to the table and I wasn’t very attached to any of the characters.

the main romance was fun but felt forced, cui buqu and feng xiao barely developed and they felt more like caricatures then believable people. I think their bickering and bantering was fun but the romance wasn’t developed well either.

It's perfect. The plot might become a bit too convoluted at times, and I kept forgetting the characters cause there's just so many with similar names! Talking about the romance aspect of it, it's really heartwarming. This is exactly what love is aaaaaaah.

although I think the romance is very slow but the way they get along is so cute T.T

most importantly they don't argue much nonsense, the way they plot and frame each other is very satisfying.

even though MC is sick and doesn't know martial arts he doesn't seem to be castrated just like that, he is very intelligent which made me endure reading this novel until the end of the book. Despite the above it doesn't really hold "burden" status on my qualification list.

i need more extra chapters, really I want... more>> to see more ways they get along T.T

anw this is the first time I read a novel with emperor character that makes sense, really grateful for some reason lol <<less

I loved the characterisation. The story is like a puzzle game. The first arc was the most confusing for me, it was like an info dump with no clue whatsoever. Then it got more and more clear, just like a puzzle.... more>>

All the clues lead to a secret organisation which is the story's mainpoint. And in the way to find the clues, MC and ML solve some cases.

Hence it may feel laggy for 180+ chapters. For me, it was neither slow nor fast, just perfect for the plot. I enjoyed the way the story unfolded.

Romance is secondary while the political part takes the lead especially in the first two arcs. At some points, they go hand in hand. As the story progresses, romance starts to take the lead. Romance in here is also the slow burn type. The main leads get together at the end tbh. There is no smut but there is definitely a powerful chemistry and s*xual tension between the leads. Their characters are deep and well designed which only enhanced every little thing about their relationship progress.

I loved how side characters were not shallow. I loved the dynamic between them. I loved how there were mentions of sexism (and some other social issues) just for the era the story was set in while on the other side strong female characters with interesting personalities took a decent role in the story. I loved the bickering main CP.

Now,

There are a few things like MC being a genius and sickly commander with weak body constitution while also being extremely tolerant of pain. He also pushes himself to limits literally anytime. And ML being the cliché top martial artist and a rare beauty. But then again, compared to the stories where the leads are ridiculously OP and invincible, this setting didn't affect the logic in the plot. Though the leads are powerful, they were not OP. Then there is the writing style. It was full of figuratives. It got hard for me to grasp the meaning at times, which may also disturb some people. Just mentioning incase.

Anyways, I was very much invested in this novel and enjoyed it to my heart. I love this novel and definitely recommend it!

And the translation is like icing on the cake. It felt very comfortable. <<less

I really love this novel. I started reading it after reading Thousand Autumn. Both books are plot-driven and I really like slow-burn relationship development. But after chapter 78 I can't get access to the rest of the translations! Someone who knows how to apply for getting access to the rest of the translations of the story please enlighten me. I'm dying to read the rest T_T

It is like Jin Young era. Is it Jin Young? The one who wrote Condor Heroes? To Liong To?

Slow pace story, because every character were built their own foundation. It grew strong and made wonderful story.

I love the way Ququ and his 'peacock' banter.

Wonderful story but you must be patient.

I read the translation by Dust Bunny.

Very good! The beginning 2 arcs were a little slow because you're still getting to know and like the main characters so all the plot was a bit hard to get invested in but then you started to get to know them, learn more about Cui Buqu, and so slowly it was totally natural, you read how the narcissist ML falls in lurve with someone that's not himself without losing his narcissism hahahaha. There are quite a few chapters where you are in... more>> his head as he just thinks about the MC and he alrd was thinking about him from the start (as this rival to pit haha) but he started getting so curious about him and guh so good! So refreshing! Man, this couple is so full of chemistry and personality! The plot was better than most light novels I've read, it had thought, was coherent and moderately fleshed out. The only con is that how the smartness of the characters was portrayed. It was like suddenly a twist happens and the characters are like heh, I have already prepared some countermeasures, plans and more plans because I am super intelligent and a mental prodigy. I can easily imagine that the author thought up the scenario and just worked backwards haha.

Rating: 4.5/5- Captivating thriller mystery! Really enjoyable on the plot front with wonderfully dynamic characters.

I really enjoyed each arc and the mystery that needed to be solved. My only qualm was that the final arc kind of rushed through the seventh prince’s ending and his ambiguous relationship with Tuan. He was definitely smart but his entry and exit was instant.

My review only commends the plot and characters. I don’t have much to say about the so called relationship- I didn’t like the couple together. I found their romantic interactions annoying.... more>> But as a collaboration between two like minded people, they were really interesting.

Overall, a very nice read with a well plot out story and an awesome MC! <<less

There was not a minute that I was calm reading this because I was worried about MC suddenly dropping to death and novel ending with be. Luckily there was no such thing and I thank the author for making me feel like dying together with MC every minute of the story ✌️

While MC was being a tormented little thun thun, thun ML was having the best of his life every minute and that lessened the burden (agony) from me a lot. ML really was a living resemblance of a peac*ck... more>> and I loved it.

All characters are well written and thought through as well as the world building. I kind of felt that the ending was abrupt
