Novel Poison Dragon: The Legend of an Asura is like your best friend.

He’s in his early 30s, just graduated from medical school, is making bank, and is tall and handsome. He’s always got your back; you can count on him for anything.

And then one day, at a junkie shelter, he meets a 60-year-old junkie, single mother of 10, and falls head over heels for her.

... more>> He cuts off everyone, quits his job, and spends his days with this woman and her kids, mostly sniffing stuff, mugging people, and occasionally killing someone.

That’s this novel.

For the first 200 chapters, it’s amazing, though hard to read.

The protagonist is basically alone, fighting against the whole world. He’s constantly tortured, mauled, and in pain.

Every day could be his last. He risks his life, gives everything he has, and, in the end, his efforts are like a fart in the wind—he’s just dancing in the palm of people much stronger than him. He only survives because he’s useful, and every victory just brings more suffering.

It’s suffocatingly sad, where nearly every powerful person is a monster, gleefully feeding on the suffering of the weak.

Aaaand then, after chapter 200, the love interest enters, destroys both the vibe and the story, and the novel basically implodes into a boring cliché.

And this is coming from someone who actually likes romance in novels.

The love interest is (surprise!) awful, both as a person and as a character. She’s just another monster, killing the innocent and weak without a second thought.

Spoiler

Example: when her henchman was losing a fight, she killed both him and his opponent—even though saving him would have been as easy as yawning.

When someone brought her a weak, sickly young man as a joke, pretending he was her fiancé, she brutally mu*dered the poor, sick guy.

[collapse]

And so on. She’s completely selfish and ruthless to everyone except the MC.

Romance? She falls for the MC because he gives off the aura of a dangerous beast and it makes her h**ny.

Spoiler

So she betrays her family and becomes the MC’s follower. Then, when she confesses, he instantly falls for her too.

[collapse]

Truly inspired writing.

Also, after he becomes lovesick, his entire worldview collapses—he’s not even sure if he should take revenge anymore, or even who he should take it on. “Something something, I have someone to live for now.”

And the more characters have their motivations revealed, the worse the writing gets—motivations become weak, s*upid, and sometimes downright schizophrenic.

TL;DR:

Gets much worse after 200 chapters, when the romance arc starts. <<less
