Scene One:

In the Great Xia Federation, inside a gaming livestream:

“Alright, that wraps up our experience with this anti-war game. I’d give it a 4. Now, let’s check out the next anti-war game… Huh?”

“Starting off with an immersive storyline? The game’s called… Normandy Landing?”

“Looks like a landing operation scenario. The streamer’s on an assault boat, but positioned toward the back—can’t really see what’s happening up front.”

“Gotta push forward a bit…”

Mumbling to himself, the fully immersed streamer moved to the front of the assault boat.

Scene Two:

“Brothers! The old villain Zhao Ming dropped another DLC! Charge!!!”

“Let me see… Holy crap?! This time, Zhao Ming actually lets players experience the story from the Third Reich’s perspective? Insane!!!”

“Where am I now? Berlin? Isn’t this the Third Reich’s capital? What’s the mission?”

Woo—Vrrrm—Woo—Vrrrm—

“Eh?”

“Why’s the air raid alarm going off?”

“?????”

“Damn it!”

“Zhao, you old bastard!!!”

BOOM—!!!!

Zhao Ming: “Actually… I’m a filmmaker. Will you believe me?”

This is by far one of the most entertaining novels I've ever read. If you're a fan of history, salty online forums/threads, reactions, and a chill plot, then this novel is for you. This is my first review, and I believe the novel has earned it.

You could say that this has the same or slightly above quality that typical Chinese feel-good novels have, but here's the difference: those ones have the same formula to them. This one has an entirely unique setting.

As someone who's read a lot of reviews and... more>> prefers ones that have some spoiling since I don't want to dive into something completely unknown, here's my spoiler tease:

Spoiler

The story is about a guy who gets transmigrated to a world similar to Earth, the key difference is that in this world they've never experienced World Wars due to having an abundance of resources and thus have greatly advanced in technology compared to Earth. Because of this, many of the people residing in it have come to eventually ask for war because there's nothing much else to do. To placate the people, the federations/governments of the world started a convention/festival hundreds of years ago that promotes anti-war, and now it's become a staple of the world every year.

[collapse]

But that's not all...

Spoiler

The MC transmigrates into the body of a man not too dissimilar to him that was planning to make a game for the upcoming anti-war celebration. But for a certain reason had his game stolen by a larger, more powerful company. Due to this, the MC has to come up with a completely different game just a few weeks away from the start of the celebration. So, you may wonder, how exactly does he solve this? Of course - through a sudden appearance of a system (yes, a system. But don't worry, it's presence in the plot isn't too overbearing). With this system, the MC can basically transfer what happened on Earth to this world. And boy, is it a sight to see.

[collapse]

And if that doesn't convince you, then here's an in-depth explanation of my previous statement of why this novel is so good:

Spoiler

I find the reaction of the citizens of this world to the things that happened in World War II to be an absolute banger of a theme in this novel. Seeing the tiny, mini-plots that happen to people as they explore Earth during World War II feels completely fresh and astounding to me. Like, I've seen other novels have plots and sub-plots that play into livestreaming, online media, and online reactions, but I've never seen one that was this extensive. Truly, it's a wonderful read.

[collapse]

Lastly, the main reason why I think this novel is so good is that it treats the subject matter of the story as respectfully as it can; it shows the reality and horrors of the subject and fits perfectly with the narrative sentiment that the celebration is for.

Spoiler

It shows why those people who ask for war are completely out of their minds or just plain ignorant by showing both the people of this world and the reader themself what war can take from you. Hell, I'm not even sure whether they'd show the holocaust or not with how realistically they portray WWII. And usually, you would never think they'd show the holocaust, but this novel? I think there's a serious chance of it. And I think it wouldn't just show it; it'd show it as most objectively and respectfully as it can.

[collapse]

That's all for my rant. In the end, the decision to read this is up to you. But for me, this is an absolute diamond of a find and an underrated gem. <<less
