The six prefectures of Zhongbo were offered to foreign enemies on a silver platter, and Shen Zechuan was taken into custody in the capital, reduced to a drowning dog—loathed and condemned by all.

Xiao Chiye followed the scent of the furor and made his way over. But instead of setting others on him, he kicked Shen Zechuan with his very own leg, rendering the latter an invalid. Who would expect this invalid to turn around and bite him in a counterattack until he was all drenched in blood?

That was the start of an epic feud between both men who tore at each other every time they come face-to-face with one another.

“Fate wants to bind me here for life, but this is not the path I choose. The yellow dust submerged my brothers deep under. I have no wish to bow in submission to an illusory fate. The imperial edict can’t save my troops, and the imperial court can’t fill the stomachs of my mounts. I’m no longer willing to lay down my life for this purpose. I want to surmount that mountain. I am going to fight for myself.”

Note: A ‘drowning dog’ is someone who is down and out, having lost favor or power.

This novel might be the same length as TGCF, or maybe a bit longer, that's why it took me more than a week to finish reading this. I thought it would be such a stretch to have 282 chapters of historical politics and war but no, I realized that even though this is long, the length is just right because of how intricate the plot is.

If you're planning on picking this novel up because you're looking for a fluffy romance, or you're expecting this to focus on the... more>> romance, or you've heard that the main couple here might be one of the best pairs in all of danmei but you're not a plot-driven reader, please, this is your chance to turn around and walk away. The plot might not be the same without the romance, but I can say that this novel can be considered as having the romance as a subplot, not the main plot. This is more about the politics and war, and if you're not into that kind of topic in your story, this might not be for you.

Both the MC (Shen Lanzhou) and the ML (Xiao Ce'an) are deserving to have their own fandom. Their characters shine so much in this. They're very well written, with their own flaws and shortcomings but also realistic. They have so much charisma that no matter how flawed they are, you couldn't help but still love them and root for them.

Shen Lanzhou is a son of a traitor and was implicated in the rebellion. He was condemned and tortured to the point where he almost died a couple of times, and one of them was because of a fatal blow by Xiao Ce'an himself. On the other hand, Xiao Ce'an is the second son of a retired general and the brother of the current general of the Libei Armored Cavalry that guards the northern border against the Baisha tribes. Because of the successive win of the army against the Baisha, Xiao Ce'an was sent to the capital as an 'assurance of loyalty' to the emperor if we're going by euphemism, 'hostage' if we're being blunt, to control the army. Both Lanzhou and Ce'an are prisoners of their own fate and in that moment of their lives, they got to meet each other. But not in a pleasant way.

This might be one of the best enemies to lovers that I've read. A fatal kick as a greeting in their first meeting is such a memorable way to introduce them with each other. Their own circumstances made them loath each other. They not just bicker and pit the other person, they literally tried to kill each other. But after their mutual hate comes the mutual attraction, which makes them hate each other even more. Having the same fate of being in a 'cage', they gradually become reluctant allies that turns into something deeper that even they didn't want to get out of. The way their romance progressed is so smooth that you wouldn't even tell when it starts, but it still feels natural.

Lanzhou and Ce'an are capable characters, both as a couple and as individuals. They even have this period when they have to do their own things and have to be apart, and that shows their development as an individual. And I loved it! They can be the power couple, but they can also prove themselves separately.

This novel also has a lot of great side characters and the antagonists are no brainless cannon fodder. The author made it so easy to get attached to them. There is no black and white, good and bad, in this story. They all have their own principle and no one can define who is right and who is wrong. It all depends on the perspective or where you stand.

The story of overthrowing a century old dynasty is not something easy to convey. There are a lot of things to consider, whether the internal and external conflicts, the politics and war. They are so intricate and written so well, and the author didn't try to skip things to move forward. The characters have their own part to do. It's all there and that's what makes this so good. The only historical Chinese novel that comes to mind with this kind of intricate, detailed plot with full of great characters is Nirvana in Fire. The only thing is that NiF was focused on the internal conflicts and the struggle to change the ruler but QJJ doesn't only change the ruler but the dynasty itself and also touches the issue of war and all the things that comes with it, with also some intense battle scenes.

The author also wasn't afraid to kill off characters. Dying in this sort of setting isn't unusual and it makes more realistic to have death in this story, but because the characters are so easy to get attached to, it was difficult to accept. The overall goal might have been achieved in the end, but not everyone got their own happy ending, even the characters from the protagonists' side and that's worthy of the tears I've spent. No matter who they are (because I won't spoil it), my heart ached for them. That's why even if the ending is satisfactory, it left a tiny hole in my heart.

Overall, this is a new favorite danmei for me, and also a new favorite couple! I would have loved to recommend this to anyone, but I know this is not a cup of tea for everyone because of the heavy plot. But I swear, if we're talking about the plot and the characters, this is definitely a masterpiece! <<less

Made an account for this site purely so I could gush about how much I love QJJ. Everything about it from the characters, romance, humour, politics, action, plot etc etc was so incredibly DELICIOUS.

ROMANCE: 1023829380😭😭/10

The sheer chemistry between Shen Zechuan and Xiao Chiye was insane and when the reviews said the s*xual tension is palpable, they were not exaggerating. They got me crying, screaming, throwing up, kicking my legs and shit. Hands down one of the best, if not the best, enemies to lovers story I've read. T97 is so... more>> good at combining humorous h**ny pining (oh so much pining and yearning and lusting...) and tender blossoming affection, and it was so satisfying to see their banter grow into genuine love and concern for each other. I feel like couples in enemies-to-lovers tropes sometimes run the risk of losing their charm once they fall in love because the tension fades but NOOOO for Cezhou, the barely concealed desire was only bolstered with their possessiveness and trust and love for each other. Please. Read QJJ if you want a love story to remember.

CHARACTERS: 10🥲/10

QJJ was so full of fleshed out and vibrant characters, and there are a lot of characters. It might be a little bit hard to follow in the beginning when you're still trying to remember the key parties and their factions, but the character guides help a great deal. And when you do start to familiarise yourself with them, they become so, so endearing. The side characters around the main couple really helped to add so much humour and personality to the story and imo they played a big role in bringing the story to life. Think bodyguards on rooftops pretending they aren't in hearing range of the MCs as they go at it in the middle of the night.

Spoiler

JUST ME GOING ON A SPIEL ABOUT SOME CHARACTERS: Fei Sheng. Underrated character. I don't know why I enjoyed reading about him so much but I really did, and I think he deserves more love. Man's was just trying his bumbling best the entire story and his development from someone who was just sticking around SZC to save his own skin to asking SZC to bury him before the city gates as a protector for a thousand years to come, COME ON MAN. The tears I shed that chapter could have filled a pool.

Dingtao, Gujin, Chen Yang. Half of my humor bookmarks come from scenes with them in it. Only that I wish I saw more of how Dingtao's relationship with SZC developed after Dingtao stumbles into SZC's episode of mu*derous intent. Did he eventually come to understand SZC better? How did he get over his initial fear, especially since it rattled him so much?

Huo Lingyun. I actually had a lot of interest in him, though in the end he remained quite a minor character. From how he parallels SZC's vindictiveness and how late into the story he was introduced, I thought he would play a bigger role in the story as some kind of foil or catalyst. (Not forgetting how he's one of the sole characters to more explicitly draw out XCY's possessiveness of SZC in front of others.) He's one of the few characters that I would've liked to see more of. But anyway, his inclusion into the story was still neatly done so it doesn't count as a loose end anyway.

Li Jianheng. His character was more or less what I expected it to be, but still he drew some tears from me in his last moments. I hope you become a bird in your next life too.

And finally, Qiao Tianya and Yao Wenyu. The f*cking silk ball. The zither. The red thread bracelet. STOPPPPP. Hunu baby kitty. No thoughts, just pain.

[collapse]

Apart from the supporting characters, the antagonists were also very well-developed. None of the key antagonists were ever portrayed as evil in black-and-white terms. Many of them had their own beliefs and motives which just happened to be antagonistic to Cezhou's goals. T97 really puts in the effort to bring them to life as believable individuals and not just tools of the story to bring Cezhou's story forward and I really appreciate and enjoy that aspect of the story.

Spoiler

As hard as I f*cking cried for XFX's death, I also cried when Hasen died. I will say it here, I loved Hasen's character and the snippets of his life with Bayin and Duo'Erlan really made me endeared to him. And when he died reaching out to the flower that fell out of his sleeve? TEARS.

Xue Xiuzhuo was a character that I struggled to understand for quite a while, until I realised he was just an incredibly passionate nationalist with plans that didn't align with the MCs. I kept wondering why he wasn't on Cezhou's side throughout because he wasn't acting out of personal greed and his end-goal seemed to be the same as theirs. Ultimately though, the choices he made to get what he wanted just killed too many people around Cezhou and so goes their relationship as enemies.

[collapse]

POLITICS & PLOT: 9/10

As someone who is usually pretty brain-dead when reading and who struggles with stories that have elaborate schemes and intrigues and backstabs and plot twists, I'd still say QJJ is very readable and digestable. DON'T LET THE POLITICAL SCHEMES DETER YOU FROM CEZHOU'S STORY!!! T97 really puts in the effort to reveal things one at a time without dragging things so far out that you get confused. Imo they have a really good handle on pacing and the explanations to plot mysteries always come just as you start to want answers.

Spoiler

Ok but in terms of the ending, it's somehow beyond my expectations but also at the same time a little underwhelming. I didn't actually think SZC was going to become the emperor by the end of the story, and the way all the different loose ends tied up so neatly was very satisfying. (Was a little bit sad we had so little Cezhou time as the plot really started to take centre stage towards the end though haha cries.) In terms of FQ's eventual reveal as the main antagonist at the end of the story, it was just a little hm.... I think his backstory and the history between the clans was revealed and tied up too abruptly. There were many hints at a missing party throughout the story, but the eventual reveal felt quite anti-climatic because we didn't really get to learn about him as a character until right up to the end? Which made his reveal as the key instigator a little bit of a "huh?" moment for me. STILL that doesn't take away from the entire rags to ruler experience though. Go regicide queen!!! WAIT AND JUST– IT'S HOW THEIR STORY ENDED WITH THRONE s*x LMFAO. OF COURSE IT DID.

[collapse]

Ok that's all from me. Please read QJJ. I wish I could go back in time and reread this story AGAIN. (And, if you do, there's so much fanart you can look at and fully enjoy 👀) <<less

The vocabulary, politics, and setting are very rich. The author uses a ton of idioms and references, so it is actually a slow read for the less literary of cn readers. A cn friend warned me about it and refused to elaborate, and I think I understand why, now.

The translation is high quality, informative, and honestly, a relief to have. Kudos to the translator! You did a good job, although some of the names chosen gave me a little whiplash :D

"Fate wants to bind me here for life, but this is not the path I choose. The yellow dust submerged my brothers deep under. I have no wish to bow in submission to an illusory fate. The imperial edict couldn't save my troops, and the imperial court couldn't fill the stomachs of my mounts. I'm no longer willing to lay down my life for this purpose. I want to overturn that mountain. I am going to fight for myself."

... more>> The philosophy and content can be rather heavy sometimes, which is why I suspect some readers left low ratings and no reviews. In actuality, this is an excellent piece (so far) heralding survival, growth, and the will to fight.

These are the points which draw the CP together— and make them terrifyingly formidable, alone or together.

..

TJQ's handling of the material makes me think nan chan will also be a fascinating book; the summary sounds like it could be eh, but with my current understanding of the writer, it is probably great

..

UPDATE: finished! I just want to say that the political intrigue is SO GOOD (and a little bit exhausting). I adored the humanity of the characters; the ruthless, the kind, the goodwill, and the hatred. While female characters are less in number and featured less often, they're all well written and important in their own right.

The way t97 handles themes and subtlety is absolutely gorgeous and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for inspiration, intrigue, or just excellent writing <<less

Preface that I'm not very good at getting through plot heavy novels like this, but even so I still have to give five stars just for the quality of the writing. I will say that it was hard for me to actually finish as I was more here for the romance than the plot, and the last 100 or so chapters are pretty much all plot. However, the two main characters are very well developed and I loved both of them enough to read through it all. They're both so... more>> young in the novel that it threw me off at first, but ancient times do make you grow up fast it seems.

Xiao Chiye is quite literally the hottest man alive, and I just cannot adequately put into words how attractive he is. You'd think he would be a himbo with a build like that, but no, he's actually smart too?? I am actually obsessed with him. And then there's Shen Zechuan, who literally claws his way up from being tortured and nearly killed at the start of the novel, to become one of the most powerful men in the country. He's absolutely brilliant. They're perfect for each other.

There's a few issues that I have with some parts of the execution, but honestly a lot of plot points went over my head as I tend to read more for enjoyment than for an exercise in critical thinking, so I can't really speak much to that. If I had to nitpick, I would say my one gripe is how the relationship development between the leads went from enemies to hate s*x to in love a bit too quickly for me, with less descriptive development of feelings between the s*x and the love.

Otherwise though, once the relationship was pretty much confirmed, the two of them were very devoted to each other and clearly cared deeply for one another. I really enjoyed all the scenes with the two leads together, and I literally spent the last half of the book just skimming through all the war arcs just to get their interactions together haha. I have a vague sense of what was happening around them, but I was way more invested in their relationship than the war. The two of them were so sticky with each other when they got the chance to be physically together, and it really was too sweet.

Clearly I am not a great reader of epic novels. Still enjoyed, but the length of this thing really took me for a ride. And the number of characters was a lot for me. Even by the latter half of the novel I was still going back to character reference sheets trying to figure out wtf was going on. I feel like I need a plot summary because I definitely did not read very carefully in some parts and this is a novel that really requires your full attention.

Not sure if I would recommend for someone looking for a romance novel, but definitely if you like scheming and political talk and warfare with a little romance on the side, you'll love this novel.

Also shout out to ML's family, absolutely loved them. I loved how chill they were with his coming out lol, added a bit of humor to a novel that was overall quite bleak in tone. <<less

I dragged myself out of obscurity to write this review.

This is one of the best stories I’ve ever read.

QJJ is ultimately a tale of rags to riches, of schemers and of pawns, and of us vs them. As many others have mentioned, this is a book centered on political intrigue, filled with numerous characters that all play important roles in the nation of Da Zhou. At first, the story is daunting. There are many characters introduced from the get-go and many places. It WILL feel overwhelming at first. But that’s... more>> okay, don’t worry if you can’t remember anything right away. The same concepts, characters, and places will be revisited over and over. Just keep reading on and you’ll get it! I also recommend referencing an online map of QJJ locations as you read.

I would guess this book is at least 80% political and 20% romance, but these elements are masterfully interwoven into each other resulting in a balanced story. You will be well-fed with heartfelt and grippingly hot moments between the main couple. At the same time, you will dive deep into a complex political web that includes court politics and espionage, economic turmoil and the grain trade, and the violence of war with foreign entities. By the end, the talented author meticulously ties up all details and loose threads in a gratifying way.

Now for some specific thoughts.

Characters: the characters are the best part of this story. Each character has their own ambitions and motivations. Even the side characters are well-thought out. At some point, you might even empathize for the enemy characters. At the end of the day, this is a story of war and politics. Life is not black and white, and the characters reflect that.

  • Shen Zechuan/Lanzhou: the story unfolds around Shen Zechuan, the son of the traitor Shen Wei, as he begins his redemption arc from prison. Shen Zechuan is described as literally the most beautiful man in the nation of Da Zhou, maybe even the most beautiful man ever! And he knows it too. He is intentionally seductive and a huge flirt around Xiao Chiye. He’s also extremely competent, intelligent, ambitious, and capable. He is stronger than he looks and he keeps his composure, and that’s what makes him so awe-inspiring and irresistably dangerous. As a partner, Shen Zechuan is more about action than about words. He teases for fun, but when push comes to shove, he is incredibly loving and devoted to Xiao Chiye.
  • Xiao Chiye/Ce’an: the second son of the prince of Libei, a territory within the northern aspect of Da Zhou. Xiao Chiye is very tall (190cm!) and one of the strongest people in the nation. He is also blessed with remarkable intelligence and leadership skills. While Shen Zechuan can be described as even tempered, Xiao Chiye is more bold and empassioned. As a partner, Xiao Chiye is fiercely loyal, possessive, but also considerate and sweet. He finds Shen Zechuan irresistable. Did I also mention he’s very tall and strong? Yeah... anyway... he’s one of my favorite ML’s ever.
  • CeZhou (the main couple) : in one word, captivating. While the couple could be described as “enemies to lovers, ” they actually don’t spend much time being true enemies. The sparks fly early on, and they actually get together within the first 15-20% of the story. The s*xual tension during their flirtation and early relationship is chair-gripping and head-smashing. For most of the story, the couple is deeply in love. Both have their own ambitions, but they lean and support each other in healthy ways. They are also crazy for each other. The intimate scenes are written with such beautiful prose and poetry, often interspersed with political machinations and smoothly into the main plot. They are some of the hottest scenes I’ve ever read.
Writing: In my opinion, the prose is where this story stands out the most. The author is amazing. Even translated to English, the prose is easily better than most books I’ve read, so I can only imagine how amazing the writing must be in Chinese. I’ve heard that the author was in her early 20s when she wrote this book, and I find this absolutely shocking given how mature and meticulous this book is. All the details of the book are premeditated and tied together beautifully. There are many literary allusions, metaphors, poetry, stunning imagery, and witty dialogue. This book made me regret not learning how to read Chinese, because it’s written SO well!

  • Intimate/s*x scenes: there are probably 15-20 such scenes throughout the book, and they are written poetically and with beautifully enticing imagery. They are some of the hottest, most mesmerizing scenes I’ve ever read, despite not being extremely explicit.
  • Action scenes: the action scenes are riveting, and there are quite a lot of violent fighting or war scenes in the story. I’ve sat on the edge of my seat on many occasions while reading QJJ. Believe me, you’ll love it.
My only criticism of the book is that the ending felt a little rushed as all the loose ends are tied together. However the journey was well worth it, and CeZhou will be cherished in my heart for a very long time. If you haven’t already, pick up this story! <<less

Qiang Jin jiu is in a level of its own, whilst I acknowledge that this is a high praise, this novel has proven to be worthy of this title time and time again. Out of all the other works I've read, I have yet to find another novel that is capable of rendering me star struck with its story telling. Tan Jiuqing's way of immersing the audience into the story is in my opinion incomparable with other authors, she is able to grant life into her characters through conveying each... more>> character's own ambitions and motives, orchestrating an intricate web or conspiracies and plots that reveals authentic human qualities. Every action taken, plot twists and direction of the story is authentic and logical. This is a politically heavy novel with a serious undertone, yet I find that she balanced this perfectly with the amount of romance and passion between the two main characters. Not only this, in other works, I'm sure you've read countless lines describing the appearance of the MC, and how they are so fragile and so beautiful. To me, it had always felt superficial, however, when it came to Shen Zechuan's beauty, the author does not rely on description itself but also through his characterisation. The way he hold himself, the ruthlessness in which he conducts his businesses further creates an unapproachable aura that is beautiful in itself, further adding to the depth of his appearance. He is a man who has the abilities to back up the claims made about him in a way that's authentic compared to many other bls I've read, this is why I have seen many people say how his beauty was the most memorable. Why am I talking abt this? I just wanted to rant 😭. I finished this awhile ago and I will proudly say that I have reread this at least 7 times and each time, I find myself giddy with expectations and kicking my legs in bed. Of all the others ones I've read, demonic cultivation, silent reading, 2ha, golden stage, panguan and more, this is will forever be my all time favourite and my comfort novel. So snuggle up and get ready to pull some all-nighters reading this, because once you fall into the rabbit hole of Qiang Jin Jiu, you're never get out.💗

PS. I recent found out that if you can't find the complete translation, because it's licensed now, you can download it online. (SHUSH I told you nothing) <<less

Don't read this unless you're ready to live with the feeling of disappointment every time you start another historical danmei knowing it will never compare to Qiang Jin Jiu. Seriously.

This novel is not for everyone - it's long, uses flowery prose, has a complicated plot stemming from its abundance of characters and their relationships (in which you need a chart, list, and map to understand), and it ha plot twists you could never guess. Personally, this was all a positive for me because I couldn't take my eyes off the... more>> words I was reading, there was never time for me to take a break because I couldn't wait to know what happened next.

And the ending was worth it.

From the character progression, to their ultimate ends, the author gives every character the respect it deserves. The MC and ML aren't the only smart people in this world, they aren't the only strong ones, they aren't even the only ones fighting to change their world, other characters are given just as much weight in their abilities and characteristics which means the journey to the end was genuinely full of wonder as to what was going to happen. No overpowered, all-knowing MC's here. Despite this the MC and ML hold their ground as leads well, their romance is one especially beautifully written and the author does a fantastic job balancing the romance with the politically heavy background.

Overall, this is the novel for me. One I'll never forget and will definitely be re-reading for years to come. Highly recommend to all, especially those who want a complicated but well-written novel with an engaging cast, lovely prose, and a romance to remember for the ages. <<less

Its like Golden Stage, for younger audience (18-25) their interaction are to idealistic in a sense of; that's how the current younger demographic idea of couple goals, both are smart, both are dazling, burning passion, carefree whenever they are togather alone, a night full of lust and so on.. And the author 100% prevail to deliver it. (Being said that, I feel old 😂😂😂)

Wanna give 4* but heavy detail and plot are to strong so it add another1* XD

If you are within the demographic (18-25) you'll madly in... more>> love with this novel. <<less

I recently got into chinese novels. I've only read, far away wanderes, 2ha and sha po lang, but this novel is the best so far, even one of the best novels i've ever read.

The love story between the couple is to die for, its so beautiful and realistic. I love these two so much, both as a couple and as individuals. The political and military drama is perfect. I never knew I could love military drama. I'm not good at reviews, just know that this story is perfect. My only... more>> regret is that I should have waited till the translation is complete, I'm all caught up now and I don't know what to do with myself. Lol

The translation is perfect, I understood everything even though I'm not chinese and can't read it. The translation is so good that i've deciede to read other novels translated by LIANYIN. Thank you so such for such a beautiful work, God bless you. <<less

It is indeed a masterpiece. Translation is also really good. I recommend reading the Chinese text. Beautiful prose and poetic literary style. It is akin to watching a film with beautiful cinematography and a well-written plot.

Novel is a heavy read and not for those who cannot appreciate literature, war strategies and political intrigues.

It’s on my no. 1 BL novel list and I have read MDZS, 2Ha, s*umbag Villain, TGCF, Thousand Autumns, Nan Chan, Wu Shuang, and Living to Suffer + Till Death Do Us Part.

tl;dr: BEAUTIFUL writing, AMAZING characterization, beware of drama and tragedy, probably too long, ending is predictable, but DEFINITELY 100% worth the read!

This is a genre I struggle with, but I've heard good things about this novel, and I like the author a lot, so decided to pick it up, and I'm glad I did. This is an extremely beautiful and poignant novel. The author truly has a way with words, and knows how to really move people.* Amazing use of literary devices and foreshadowing; everything is set up in the... more>> perfect way to create the most emotional impact possible. Truly masterful storytelling.

The characters!!! You can really feel the struggles and determination of the two main characters. It's an enjoyable journey to watch their relationship progress from enemies to working together when it suits their purposes, to physical attraction, to a loving and supportive partnership. There is utmost respect and love for one another. There are sweet moments and embarrassing moments and sexy moments and hilarious moments.

The side characters: okay, so first of all, there are A LOT of side characters and minor characters. The book is so long, and everyone has their name, their courtesy name, and their job title, so it was difficult at times to remember everyone. But there's like probably around 10 more major characters surrounding the two main characters, and all of them have very distinct personalities and motivations and feel so real. ALL of them have such amazing character growth arcs, which is rare for side characters! WARNING though, while the story ends happily for the main couple, there are definitely characters who meet a very tragic end, so this novel is not for the faint of heart.

Given that I usually don't do well with novels that are set in historical settings but WITHOUT fantasy elements, this was a bit long for me... I felt there were a lot of places where 2-5 chapters could be condensed into just one chapter. The beautiful writing kept me going, but to be honest, while the journey was great, it could have been a lot shorter. And since you know it's going to end well for the MC so there's really only one way it can end lol, so no surprises there.

Overall, gave this 9.2/10. Someone who likes historical fiction/ancient settings more than me would probably rate it higher. Genuinely recommend!

* Caveat: I read this in Chinese, so I can't vouch for whether any translations fully capture the beauty of the author's writing style. <<less

To write such complex and heavily political story in such a clear, understandable and enjoyable way - truly genius.

I bow to the author and I bow to the translators how did an amazing job. A special thank you for the character guides and translated maps. Without them I would be lost.

I wanted to read this novel seriously, but maybe I was just too sleepy yesterday? IDK, I persisted for a while, but when I woke up today, I found no will to continue reading. Not because I think it's boring, but because I honestly don't know how much of what I read was understood, and I'm too lazy to reread so soon DX ANYWAY, this experience didn't work out quite well. So, I'll come back to reread another time!

Summary: (Honestly, one of the reasons I stayed away from this... more>> novel for so long was because of the Summary, it's so confusing to me LOLOL). The basic gist is this... The MC (Shen Zechuan) is introduced as a prisoner being tortured by the imperial guards. He's the son of a suspected turncoat during the war, one that resulted in over 30, 000 deaths and lost territory. As was common back then, to punish one person was to punish his entire family. And as the only remaining person in the Shen family, the MC got the brunt of it all, and was left to face the collective hatred of everyone who wanted his father dead. Unfortunately for them, he doesn't die. He continues to survive even after being imprisoned, even though he's become numb to it all.

As for the ML, the ML is Xiao Chiye, the second son of a famous war general. His brother took over the family business in his father's stead, and is known far and wide as a respectable and powerful general. Meanwhile, the ML had the identity of a dandy in the capital. One who does nothing but drink and who*e around -- this is not actually the case. Just like the MC, Xiao Chiye is eagerly working towards his seemingly impossible goal. He's a caged wolf that wants to go to where his home is and be free. Unfortunately, the situation refuses to allow such a thing to happen. <<less

So good.

A great story with great characters. Quite plot heavy but I loved it regardless. At times it did feel boring in the middle but when I was about to finish the story I felt very reluctant to complete it because I didn't want to part with them.

Politics is one of the genre I am not big fan of so that was the reason I gave it 4 stars. Even so the plot's intriguing.

... more>> The romance between the main characters was so well developed. From literal enemies to crazy in love.

One of my fav lines in the novel where I was literally squealing

Spoiler

"To marry me, two million isn't enough; I want Lanzhou's priceless smile that even a thousand gold cannot buy." "

[collapse]

Of course the word "wife" while addressing to Lanzhou was a bit off putting. Like :

Spoiler

" "The best-looking man in the whole of Dazhou is my wife!"

[collapse]

Side couples were great too. I really loved them.

Yao Wenyu my baby he deserves the world😭

Spoiler

"Since there is no Yao Yuanzhuo in this world, " Qiao Tianya slowly closed his eyes, as if mocking this absurd arrangement, "then the Qiao Songyue of it is dead." "

I literally bawled my eyes out in this part. I wish they had their own happy ending too.

Honestly, this is such a masterpiece! I have no words to describe just how amazingly written the novel is. Literally speechless right now and having a hard time trying to just describe this, it's that good!

The novel is astoundingly complex - filled with intricate plots, dynamic and well-written characters, a vast engaging world, intriguing backstories, and more! There is just so much going on yet the author managed to execute their ideas well. This could easily be something so confusing but everything makes sense!

It did take some time for... more>> me to grasp the beginning of the story due to too many terms introduced but the footnotes were incredibly helpful!

The romance with the main couple is done absolutely marvelous as well. The couple as individuals have their own flaws, strength, depth, and complexity but both of them together creates something spectacular. This is an enemies to lovers done right. The way they just fell in love with each other felt so natural and their support and care for each other is truly heartwarming...

Since I haven't finished the novel, I'll leave this as is for now and will edit this review once it's complete <<less

This book is HUGE. Not just in length, but in layers and depth of plot. Maps and charts provided on cangji. Net will help you a lot. I also highly recommend waiting for translations to complete before beginning this if you're only reading in english. If you were to take a long break halfway through this story while waiting for more chapters, I think it would be very hard to remember all of these names, places, etc.

The MTL is unfortunately completely unreadable, and for a book so heavy in details,... more>> you can't just blast through it.

All that being said, this book is so good that you will not mind reading through chapters and chapters of details about military provisions, moldy rice, city ditches and other incredibly boring areas that are covered in this book in immense complexity.

The main couple are completely unparalleled. Cunning versus cunning, flirt versus flirt. Every romantic encounter is consensual, albeit hostile at first, but they both have the ability to push the other away. They're both very strong in physical and mental prowess.

The first half of the book grabs you by the feels and makes you feel like a teenager. By the second half, you will feel like an old married crone rooting for your children while fully invested in the numerous plotlines.

What I really like about this couple is that each has been written as a full person. There is no two-dimensional lover who only lives for the main character with no life of his own. They each have their own likes and dislikes, detailed family histories, close friends, confidants, senses of humor, etc. They're very believable as real people in the world, but there's still no lack of passion that people like from those 2D relationships.

I would read 45 more chapters just about rice for these heroes. <<less

The Story

The story is incredibly well-structured and interconnected. At first, many characters are introduced, which might give the impression that the plot isn't very complex. However, as the narrative progresses, everything ties together in an impressive way. It takes a bit of patience at the beginning to get to know the characters, but it’s well worth it. Every figure who appears — whether a eunuch, a servant, or an advisor — plays a significant role. The author doesn’t use characters as mere background; each one serves a meaningful purpose and... more>> adds layers to the story.

The plot is realistic, filled with wars, battles, political intrigues, and corruption, all carefully crafted. We find ourselves connecting even with characters who initially seem insignificant. The richness of detail in developing not just the protagonists but the entire cast makes the reading experience even more immersive. You can even start to predict some characters’ actions because the author gives depth to everyone and interweaves their stories masterfully.

The Development of the Romance

The Couple’s Evolution

From the beginning, the relationship between the protagonists is marked by hatred. The male lead (ML) even assaults the main character (MC), nearly killing him. This event later becomes a heavy burden for the ML, as he feels guilty about his actions. Initially, their rivalry seems irreconcilable, and I wondered how they could possibly develop feelings for one another.

However, as the story unfolds, the MC gradually integrates himself into the ML’s social circle through well-thought-out strategies. They start to truly get to know each other, realizing they are both extremely intelligent and always thinking several steps ahead. Even as enemies, they build a relationship based on mutual respect, constantly needing to prove themselves in the capital.

The tension between them grows naturally and gradually, without feeling forced or rushed. One of the most striking moments of this progression happens during the autumn hunt, when the MC helps the ML — though purely out of self-interest. Even in the midst of fighting, they exchange taunts, making their dynamic all the more engaging.

Throughout the story, their romance develops organically. Many authors struggle to create relationships that feel balanced — not too rushed, not too shallow. However, this author succeeded in crafting a powerful and realistic romance that feels like a genuine process of growth and discovery.

The Protagonists

Although all characters are well-developed, the protagonists deserve special attention for their remarkable growth throughout the story.

The MC (Main Character)

At first, I thought he would fit the typical archetype of the cold, calculating protagonist who never fails. However, as the story progressed, he proved to be much more human. He is extremely intelligent and skilled at devising plans, but he doesn't always foresee everything or manage to resolve every situation. This vulnerability makes him more realistic and compelling. Furthermore, he’s not just a strategist — he’s also capable of fighting and defending himself, adding more depth to his character.

The ML (Male Lead)

The ML is more extroverted and sociable, easily winning people over. At first, he comes off as arrogant and immature, but as the story advances, he reveals an impressive intelligence.

While staying in the capital, he shows great astuteness and becomes deeply involved in political intrigues. However, once he leaves that environment and engages in wars, it becomes clear he still has a lot of growing up to do. His journey of growth is fascinating. He doesn’t become a formidable leader overnight — he faces defeats and setbacks, learns from his mistakes, and builds his strength over time.

Moreover, he’s persistent. Even though he initially hates the MC, his curiosity draws him closer. He doesn't give up easily, and once he finally wins the MC over, he becomes a thoughtful and devoted partner. His personality is often compared to that of a wolf: fierce and determined, yet deeply loyal once he chooses someone. He also respects the MC’s more reserved nature, creating a dynamic that is both engaging and well-balanced.

The Weak Point of the Story

Spoiler

The only part that truly bothered me was the death of the female emperor. She wasn’t a villainous character; on the contrary, she made great efforts to rule the country and bring about change. Her death was tragic and felt unnecessary. Perhaps the author didn’t find a way to keep her in the narrative, but it’s a shame — she was such a strong and determined figure

A Story Worthy of an Adaptation

I would love to see this story adapted into a series or a film because it’s simply incredible. I know some people find political intrigue boring. The first time I read it, I focused only on the protagonists and overlooked some of the plot details. However, upon rereading it more carefully, I realized just how perfectly everything fits together — the battles, the characters, the settings.

The story never feels dull because there are always relevant events happening that connect to future moments. The author deserves recognition for crafting such a tightly woven and masterfully structured narrative.

English is not my first language, so I kindly ask for your understanding if there are any mistakes. <<less

I held off reading this book for a while because it seemed heavily focused on political intrigue. As someone who enjoys politics only in TV shows, I thought I'd struggle to get into it. But I'm always happy to be proven wrong. This was so well-written, easily one of the most complex political danmei novels I've ever read. It was sooo good!!!!

Let me just say, I am obsessed with the male lead. He's the epitome of an alpha male. That scene where he protected the crown prince? Ugh, he's soo... more>> sexy. It's hard to put into words, but he constantly exudes big-d*ck energy without the author ever needing to spell it out. It's just in the way he carries himself—commanding, self-assured, and wont take any disrespect from anybody. This is how you write a strong character. The love-hate dynamic he shares with the MC is *chef's kiss*. The s*xual tension between them is so thick it's suffocating! I love it.

The MC is equally captivating. I adore characters with a cold, distant attitude, and this one nails it. The entire nation literally hates him, and half the people want him dead, but he carries on as if nothing's wrong. He's sharp, calculating, and poised, handling the ML's insults like a queen. There's nothing I love more than an MC with a backbone, sassy but never tactless, calm but absolutely lethal when provoked. He skinned someone alive, like seriously. A badass power-bottom MC? Yes, please!

Fair warning: This book is incredibly detailed. I had to reread the first 80 pages and take notes just to keep up with all the characters introduced, it's a lot. Think Game of Thrones introducing everyone in one episode. You can't skim it, but trust me, it's worth the effort. Despite my initial hesitation, I ended up loving the political drama. The author explains the intricate plot masterfully without dumbing it down for readers. Even if you're not a fan of politics, this book is a 10/10 must-read. No, scratch that—10000/10. Highly recommend! <<less

Such a great story and a good translation, too!

Getting a bit panicky because I'm approaching the cut-off chapter - maybe I should eke it out a little, so I'll have more of it. I just get freaked out when something happens to our boys and I need to know what's next, heh.

It's so weird, in the first chapters I wept for and loved Shen Zechuan and really hated Xiao Chiye, like hated him.

And now I'm like 'cupping both of them gently in my hands while crying meme' - nobody is... more>> allowed to touch any of them! <<less
