Just finished reading the raw ?, and I will say this is without a doubt the most well balanced, entertaining, funny, dramatic, bad-ass, incredible piece of fiction I have read.

The story is well paced, and the romance is beautiful, deep, sensual and fluffy (incredible variety here).

The MC, the beloved ZYS cannot be described as anything but epic✨. He is a rare character who does not loose his ruthless nature even as we reach the end of the novel.

The ML is incredible ? (Nothing more to be said) .

The progression of their relationship transcending space, time and destiny without disturbing the pace and incredible idea behind the story is stunning.

The author is a genius.

Pick up a megaphone and shout it out. A moving read for all lovers of the written word.

I have deleted my previous reviews because I think after some 3 or more years, this review is not valid anymore. Idk about other people, but at 2017, chinese novels aren't this known and translations are quite scarce. So when I found this little gem, I was really amazed and truthfully this story got me becoming a rotten apple lol. I searched and read more QT story, be it BL or BG.

Yes, this story isn't the best. This story has a gray stu MC and typical pampering ML. However, I... more>> think the arcs storyline are really quite good. I mean if you think this story isn't that good, then yes. Its trope is kinda common because you've read countless similar others. Truthfully, I have also read countless better stories. However, when I think about QT world, this novel still left a very deep impression on me.

If some of you are 'old-timers' who have been there when this novel is still being translated, maybe you will feel an attachment like mine. <<less

So good, I really like the way that there are many different types/genre of story here. I also love the way the two main characters always manage to find each other and fall in love over and over, it's so cute >\\\<

MC's just so OP it's not even funny, the beginning arcs are supposed to pull you in but in fact they did the opposite for me, like one of the reviews said it's like those Harry Potter fanfics where the original is so twisted it's not even funny, MC and ML are so h*rny, it's really not like the everlasting love yada yada the author is portraying, like there's literally no romance, Please go read Don't pick up boyfriends from tr*sh instead, that's one top tier QT romance novel

Does this story have short comings? Certainly!

Do they keep me from re-reading every single arc over and over again? Certainly... not!

——————————————————————

The thing I like most about this novel is that both MC and ML are very confident characters and always manage to have a very secure and equal relationship.

I'd give this around a 3, I suppose?

Listening to all the reviews praising and complimenting this piece had me really excited to read it, though personally, it didn't really live up to its hype? I can see why people like it so much, with its swift, easy face slapping, powerful MC and ML, and good translations.

But at the same time, I was very disappointed. The MC and ML are just so unreasonably op that everything gets solved so easily and it feels like there are no conflicts. Everything goes by... more>> so quickly and it doesn't feel fulfilling at all bc of how unreasonable it seems. The MC has this disappointing advantages in his system where
Spoiler

once he enters his body, it immediately becomes top tier. It gets an amazing physique and has amazing vocal range, beauty, etc. It's used as an excuse for so many of the MC's abilities, and to me it just feels unlikable. He also has a cheat system (so op I just can't) where he can hack into anything and everything without any explanation and can search up songs across worlds, use really advanced tech to create things, etc.

[collapse]
I recommend reading hy-d-ra, idlehands, and Attica's reviews. They encompass and describe this novel and its shortcomings in a lot of detail.

In one arc, probably one of my least favorite, it's about MC becoming a god of music. How does he do it?

Spoiler
    1. His singing improves to impossible levels and ranges because of his cheats, and he becomes probably one of the best singers in the world because of it
    1. He essentially used his system to search up great hit songs in other worlds and copy pasted them as his. He justifies it as because he was being plagiarized of off and accused of plagiarizing, he was going to do anything to shake off the untrue accusations (even though he's plagiarizing) The logic stuns me.
    1. He later on rides off of this success and plagiarized songs. What I don't understand is that by doing this, he's also harming other singers and artists who don't have his perfect body + vocal range cheat and have done nothing to harm him. He just transmigrates and is a god at singing, which feels very disrespectful to other artists and singers.
    1. He immediately is able to get funding for the concert, and in just one month, developed abs and faceslaps everyone. There was no detail either. He literally just searches up some songs, takes them as his, gets funding from ML, and then sings at a concert and succeeds, etc.
    1. He's so op and immediately crushes the antagonists that it doesn't even feel satisfying
    1. Absolutely no mention of side characters lol.
[collapse]

This pretty much happens in every arc, give or take some differences. It's painful.

The plot really isn't special at all. It's stereotypical, but the worst part is that even the writing/characters and development don't add anything at all. Stereotypical plots can become amazing with great writing. This does not happen here. Here, the MC (repeating what I said earlier)
Spoiler

coasts by with all his life hacks. Nothing comes up as an actual conflict. MC and ML barely need to put in any effort. Everything happens so quickly it's unsatisfying

[collapse]

Characters are disappointing too. Side characters are given no development (0 names remembered, 0 concepts of side characters remembered), and antagonists are 1-D characters made just to get slapped by the MC. They're all so forgettable. Everything centers around the MC and ML, yet I also feel no personal attachment to them? They don't have many points to make them feel entirely relatable to readers.

Romance? It varies. Sometimes I feel like there's no development and I don't understand ML and MC at all, other times it's a bit better?
Spoiler

One arc had the ML as a man who married, had a kid, had his wife die, and then remarried for a mother figure for his kid. The MC was much younger college student who lived with the ML bc he was the son of ML's caretaker, who'd died (I think?).

Their romance goes like this: MC acts naive and pitiful around ML and takes care of ML's kid. Meanwhile, ML's second wife is secretly abusing the kid, and ML decides to plant cameras. He then gets this sudden attraction to the MC, and uses the cameras to peep and spy on MC. There is barely any interaction. It's just ML thirsting through a screen as he peeps on MC (MC is aware of this, but ML isn't aware of MC knowing).

ML just comes out of nowhere to kiss MC (0 development) at one point in the arc; it was really strange

The peeping thing left a sour taste in my mouth. It only developed fine bc it was the MC, but this guy was literally putting cameras in MC's bathroom while also believing MC was weak, pitiful, and naive, and aware that MC depended on him. ML doesn't straight up watch him shower and stuff, but he gets peeks.

[collapse]
Yeah, so I'm not a fan.

Edit: I tried to give this novel another chance and started on the Ancient China arc. A few hundred words in, and I just dropped it again because of MC's agonizingly s*upid OP abilities.
Spoiler

He woke up in a jail/dungeon and has to find his way out a shitty situation where a prince might have him executed. How does he do it? He just taps on the prince's head, hypnotizes him, and tells him to set him free.

[collapse]
That's it. No words, no plot, just an OP hypnotizing ability to make an important character follow his every single word. Man was that such a disappointing sellout. It makes you wonder why the MC bothers if he can just hypnotize people all the time. <<less

The romance is not seen, but told. There is no chemistry and the readers are simply told they are deeply in love.

The side characters are flat and repetitive. This is not a story read for its character development.

Plot lines for each world are simple and predictable. The main character is almost God like. He can turn any situation in his own favour, in a couple chapters with minimal conflict.

... more>> The plot line is flat and contains minimal excitement, mystery or intriguing aspects

Would not recommend if you're looking for an indepth plot or a satisfying romance. <<less

One word, boring. Had to drag myself to reach the end. Literally I'd think of taking a break from studying, but then I'd remember this is the novel im reading to pass time so I just end up choosing to rather continue my studies. Had to give up at the 13th arc, because it became too much of a chore rather than the enjoyable and relaxing read it was supposed to be.

The only likable character is Ning Wang Shu, the toddler from arc 2.

MC is arrogant and mean-spirited. He does certain things just because he "can" and doesnt have to follow Lord God in being a villain anymore, despite his personality still being of one.

His only Interest seems to be to get back at Lord God - oh? his likes and dislikes? He has none. Quite literally, the MC does not "like" anything, nor does he dislike anything (except for Lord God of course).

His skills include everything yet he has... more>> no hobbies.

His supposed love for the ML he spends "decades" hibernating after each arc to get rid of? Comes from nowhere. He magically falls in love with people as soon as they express desire to pa pa pa yet holds no fond feelings for them.

MLs are sometimes interesting, but still always 2 dimensional! Side characters are only there to be an opposing "sexy" character.

I suppose if youre looking for a Gary Stue MC, who loves and hates nothing then this is perfect for you! <<less

An OP, unbearably arrogant, plagiarist, narcissistic, cruel, omniscient (in every world), selfish/ (I think he has a disability in understanding sympathy and empathy), mentally somewhat disorted MC playing a life chess game in every world he transmigrates into and making s** with his equally unbearable boyfriend (not even a lover, let alone 'soulmate'), ML. This is what I found at most.

Spoiler

MC transmigrates into a space controlled by Lord God. Lord God restricts MC in all the ways and forces him to act either as a cannon fodder or main villain without changing their cruel nature and fate. After his dreadful death, the soul energy of that whole world acts as a redbull to Lord God. MC only suffers but Lord God consistently gets more powerful. MC then plans and succeeds in escaping from Lord God from his no.1 hacking skills. Now, his task is to change the fate of the character he transmigrates to, become equally powerful as Lord God then defeat him and return to his own world.

[collapse]
Now, I accept that MC suffered a lot. But in my point of view, any sane person who suffers a great turmoil from infinite lives, becomes more emphatic and understanding/confident/numb to pain/anthrophobic/more brave to face challanges, TRAUMATIZED or something like that. But he became Mr. Perfect, is unbearably arrogant and narcissistic, a person who thinks he is the only one who suffered, he is the only one who deserves success, only his pain is real and at last, everyone is a chess piece or a play thing. Only an insane person can react like this. He is so powerful, so skillful, so omnipotent that it is beyond my imagination. Only the creator of this universe can be that powerful.

As it is starting, first arc was OK. But second, third, fourth,.... in each and every arc, the story was like MC transmigrating -> adjusting his (the ori. Owner's) body's condition and skills from average to ultra pro max -> in the name of changing the fate, converting the main leads and most of the side characters into main villains and cannon folders (mostly they weren't so cringe and dumb at first! Until MC transmigrates) -> living as no.1 among no.1s until his death. He knows everything, painting, dancing, cooking, singing, acting.... but if you remove his system elf, he is a normal human. A normal person with excellent hacking skills. But he was shown like these skills are his own. He feels these skills are his. Until now, only in ninth arc it felt like he was trying, struggling and he was the one getting face slapping.

ML. As irritating as MC. In the very first arc, he gets obsessed with MC... no. His body and immediately abandons his niece. Without another thought, he supports MC (even though he is powerful enough) and opposes his niece. From then, he stalks MC in each world, easily gets seduced by him, gets overly obsessed with him, persuades him (by hook or crook) and until his death, quenches his lust everyday. Where the hell is LOVE?
Spoiler

It was shown that MC is over independent, free spirited, hates being controlled by others. I wonder how could he stand his overly possessive and overly controlling boyfriend.

[collapse]
He is overly possessive and obsessive, controlling, clingy, psychotic in jealousy cases, masochistic, even more powerful than MC, extremely arrogant to everyone else except MC, cares for only MC. Everyone else are nothing. If he had to kill a bunch of people to satisfy MC, he may do it happily. He can be told as MC's golden finger or to exactly describe, a diamond embossed platinum finger with gold coating. His existence felt utterly meaningless.

If the author wanted to create a sincere, deep and romantic love story of soulmates, then it became undoubtedly utter failure. This relationship can't even be said as toxic because this one has mutual satisfaction. I can't categorize it. In every arc (after 3 / 4 arcs) MC tells ML to find him in his next incarnation. When ML finds and stalks him, the said intelligent MC acts as dumb as ever. He doubts everyone as his boyfriend except the one beside him and to determine, he even kisses them suddenly (physical connection is the only way to confirm his "soulmate".) After knowing they are not the ones, he leaves them halfway. Poor them, get confused and seduced.... aaaarrrrgh! I can write an essay on this weirdest relationship.

World building is good but not special or interesting. Most of the topics are common in QT novels I guess. As I am not at the ending, I can't say anything about the whole plot. Side characters, mostly they were degraded to highlight MC and ML. Protoganists are no exception. In an arc, to win over MC (to win the competition), a female Protoganist even exposed herself naked in front of the cameras! I think you can understand to which extent they were degraded. Only to highlight mainleads. I don't remember most of the characters. *sigh*

Suspence, there is actually no suspence. Everything is pre-predictable. I skipped physical interaction parts. I can't tolerate them. There is no adventure. Only MC's one side over suppressive attack on side characters. I don't have a dislike for OP characters. Actually I enjoy them and admire them. But two extremely arrogant and cruel and scumful (OOC) characters as OP that too without character develpoment, are not at all acceptable for me. I can't empathize with most of the characters and the other are present to mark MC's """""greatness""""". I wanted MC and ML to get face slapped many times. But my wish remained as a wish.

In this novel, there are only two types of acceptable appearances for MC. 1) Pitch black peach blossom eyes, pitch black hair and a model level perfect body shape. 2) Silver hair, pure blue eyes and a model level perfect body shape. I don't know what's with this author. In every arc, disregarding the plot, he /she praised MC's beauty like ever and ever. I am done with this too. ML was no exception. He was shown as even more perfect.

I have some more points to mention but I don't wanna. These are my opinions. If you find these helpful, then there are even more better novels in this site. If you don't really mind these things then you might enjoy this novel. <<less

QWTFOTD was one of the first novels I ever read from this site. Specifically, the fourth. That should mean I'm attached, right?

... You've seen my rating. Obviously the answer is no. I'm not going to pretend I have good taste. I enjoy schlock fests and I adore books so bad that I can make fun of them. Those are the absolute best! But this? I couldn't. I don't know how I made it that far to start with. The first chapter made me so livid I had to pace, but... more>> I thought: it's so well-loved! Surely there's a reason for that. I've been seeing it everywhere! Surely there's a reason for that. It's the recommended introduction to QT novels! Surely there's a reason for that.

Whatever that reason is, I don't know, I will never know, and I am far beyond caring. This is the first time any piece of literature has put me off an entire f*cking genre. I'm dead serious; this novel has given me such negative associations with QT novels that seeing the tag instantly stops me cold, no matter how much I like literally everything else about the novel, no matter how much potential and interest I had in it prior, QWTFOTD has utterly destroyed my interest in quick-transmigration novels. It's kind of impressive!

And - look, I freely admit I picked this up when it was first translated, and part of the headache was struggling through that. Here's the thing though: if I like a plot or the characters enough, that literally does not matter. I've put up with significantly worse translations (and hell, works that are originally English, even), purely because the summary piqued my interest so well. That was the case with QWTFOTD.

... aaaaand then the protagonist. He is my entire problem with this novel. I was willing to work around him as best I could, but ultimately, his arrogant, pseudo-intelligent everything pissed me off past trying. No, the ML is not better but I'm just going to say that I barely registered his presence and/or just erased him from my memory. Either is possible. I don't know. I don't care.

Out of sheer desire to commit psychological self-harm upon myself, maybe I'll try rereading it again some day. But that's sure as hell not today, and possibly not for another several months. If this review isn't enough to put you off QWTFOTD - I hope you enjoy it. I mean that sincerely! It's got all this attention for a reason, after all, even if I don't see it. <<less

I'm not necessarily saying that this is exceptional, but it's good for the general low-expectations audience of this site.

Since looking for novels to read is basically just dumpster diving when it comes to Novelupdates, this one is like finding that perfect cardboard box to sleep in after begging for spare change the whole day. It's not like finding a pair of intact Jordan's, but it'll probably scratch your itch if you remember what site you're on.

There's definitely some weaker bits, like how the Hollywood-level hacking never really gets much focus,... more>> or the long exposition you have to trudge through with each new story arc. And I guess we're not really in a position to demand anything from the author, either, since this doesn't seem like a story that the author genuinely cared that much about to do research on hacking and other sci-fi mumbo-jumbo that makes its way into some bits. Personally, I'm fine with Hollywood hacking when it isn't part of the main theme of the story, like the Watch_Dogs game.

If we were to talk about Shounen Ai / Yaoi novels, I would consider this a classic in the YNCU (Yaoi Novel Cinematic Universe), similar to how Frankenstein and War of the Worlds are seen in western literature. They aren't the best written (I mean seriously, War of the Worlds has the most BS reason for the aliens being defeated) but they're still alright, and were probably better than the vast majority of other books.

So, if I weren't on a website filled with some of the crappiest books known to mankind (second only to Wattpad, which is the leading cause for civilization's downfall), I'd have probably given this a lower rating, but this is still a straight upgrade to a lot of the stuff you find on this site. It's a fun read, so give it a shot. Unless you don't like gay people. In all seriousness, just treat this as a romantic romp exploring and trivializing tropes in popular media. Don't take it too seriously, don't expect some Parasite-level writing or Overlord-level worldbuilding, and you'll probably have a good time with the light satire, if not the characters and the romance.

There's definitely glaring flaws, but people like this series for a reason, and those same people probably acknowledge the existence of those flaws. They're old enough to appreciate gay romances, after all. It's short, sweet, and far from perfect. It ain't the groundbreaking innovation of Yaoi novels like how Doom Eternal is to FPS games, but it ain't the train wreck that is Anthem, either. I'd say the experience of reading this book is more like a popcorn flick for the average reader.

Also gotta give props to the author for not blatantly cramming Chinese propaganda or prejudices or pride down our throat. That seems to be a big problem in most Chinese media. Like alright we get it, you don't like Japanese and Korean people, and you also don't like women having basic human rights or black people, but you don't have to shove it in our face. The surprising lack of racism really scores a couple points with me.

Spoiler

The Zombie Apocalypse arc is definitely a top tier story for me, though. Until you realize that the ML was a jerk to literally everyone except the protagonist for the entire arc.

I m dropping out. The translations been very good but the plot couldn’t keep me entertained. I think if you read it in one go, you get very fast tired of the characters and unnecessary drama. There is nothing new, I don’t get all excited if someone gets called kitty either, I do not feel the characters. The beginning was entertaining but once they switched to all the typical game settings like actor and model, I started to skip sections and still didn’t feel like I missed anything important.

Isn't it weird to see a book with overly good 4-5 stars rating?

At first, I thought so too. Then, I read the book (I didn't read the translation so I cannot comment on that).

The book is good. The Uke and Seme is good, the story overall is fast moving, there isn't much to complain :)

Definitely a gem, I just like the interaction between the uke and Seme all the time.... just too cute.

I didn't read it for the yaoi, read it for the wonderful plot.

  1. Each chapter is an arc with a typical plot (imperial power struggle in ancient China, zombie apocalyse, drama in the entertainment industry etc) and the MC randomly comes into the body of a side character trying to derail the main character. The arcs are consistent in quality in terms of setting/plot/characters, concise with no chapters of fillers.
  2. The different point of view bought to light how some generic MCs that we kind of accept as righteous also have plenty of personality flaws. Our MC reincarnates into people with personality flaws and never at beginning of the plotline, so it's interesting to see how he gets out of the cannon fodder situations and remedies past bad actions (if he reincarnated into a bad person) to live mostly righteously while stay in line with character.
  3. There is an overall plot so it's not just a series of disjointed short stories with no relation to each other. With every story arc, he discovers/gains something and gets closer to his goal.
And lastly the translation is good. There are minor typos but it's a smooth read and I appreciate the translator doing one arc at a time so no weeks of waiting for random cliffhangers. The yaoi element is strong, but if that's not your... more>> type of tea, just skip the 3-4 paragraph where they get deep into it every arc and you'd still get a good story out of it. <<less

This has to be one of the most amazing BL Novels ever written.

It actually competed with my personal favorite (True Star), they now share the 1st spot in my list of favorite BL novels.

From the beginning till the end, I was thoroughly hooked with this novel.

... more>> The MC was quite unique because he basically doesn't care about being good or playing nice. He's not the type of MC who's domineering and arrogant, he actually doesn't care about the other characters unless you're the one who personally provoked him.

He perfectly fits this description: 'Don't poke the sleeping dragon. You'll die immediately.'

The ML in this novel was very possessive, loving, devoted, and funny.

The ML literally chases after the MC throughout their Different Lifetimes. He had this crazy obsession with the MC. He's literally a Stalker, lmao!~

The Ending was actually kind of sweet because the ML was so devoted with the MC.
