Rebirth of a Star General

Description

The ancient saying goes: Most generals come from Guan Xi, while ministers come from Guan Dong.

He Yan was born to be a Star General.

She was merely a stepping stone for her family, and was used as her brother’s substitute. She had fought on the battlefields for years, bringing peace to Xi Qiang, stopping the barbarians… When her brother recovered, she gave up her position with great laurels brought to her name. Without further ado, she was married off.

During her married life, she was forsaken by her husband and even suffered from a strange illness, thereby losing her eyesight…

The young and pretty concubine stood in front of her, speaking softly: “The decoction you drank that made you blind was instructed by the elders of your family. As you know, the dead tell no tales. If you lived, you would be your family’s greatest threat!”

A great general of her time, the heroine of the country, died pitifully in the hands of those shameless women, who only knew to fight for a man’s favor… How absurd!

When she opened her eyes again, she had become the drill fields officer’s daughter, who was weak and arrogant, innocent and naive.

They had stolen her glory, taken her life, lead her army and betrayed her feelings! She had crawled back from the depths of hell and would take back everything she had lost, one by one.

Bring the world under her feet and with her beauty and nobility, overwhelm the nine prefectures!

But would she get out easily once she entered the barracks?

Hardly did she begin her adventures when He Yan met her arch-enemy of the previous lifetime, that young hunk whose “enemies would retreat as soon as he attacked”.

The chic and cool female general versus the handsome and ravenous young man. Two efficient generals team up to conquer the world!

Maybe I'll change my mind after a while but my current impression after finishing it is: it's ok.

My rating: 3.5/5

This is my second/third novel from the same author. I really like Malicious Empress and currently also in the middle of Ill-fated Consort. A Star General is a little different from the previous two novels.

Star General is about He Yan, a noble woman who previously switch place with her cousin who after being born was told he would not live long so she took her cousin male identity (because they needed... more>> a male heir? the logic is kinda flimsy here) and eventually became a young rising general of Great Wei. Her cousin managed to survived into his adulthood and fully got healthy so they eventually switch back their identity. She died due to her family fearing her identity will eventually be exposed causing downfall of her family. Her soul then went into another younger girl who just happen to share the same exact name and is from a more humble family. She, who never truly have her own identity in her original body, decided relive her life in a similar path but without a shackle of the responsibility she had with her family. She started doing thing she never had a chance to: making friends and falling in love.

Still the same rebirth premise but the main difference I felt is that although she harbor hatred with her original family most of the novel is spend on her reliving her life and less on revenge unlike Malicious Empress and Ill-fated Consort. In fact, the revenge part didn't really start until chapter 190 and lasted for like 50 chapter... just to give you an idea of how little time was spend on revenge. (50 out of like 267 chapters) Whereas Jiang Ruan in Ill-fated consort spent her time on revenge on one characters from the get go and with very little time living their life. A nice change in pace. This is either a good thing or bad thing on whether you care too much on scheming and revenge. Malicious Empress is kinda in the middle but even Shen Miao spend way more time on revenge than He Yan who literally have one revenge arc.

In terms of character, He Yan is no doubt the nicest of them of all. Sure she hated what her family did but even in her "revenge" she wasn't cruel, she simply wanted to expose her family and want the word to know the great star general previously is a female. Whereas, Jiang Ruan from Ill-fated is the coldest and cruelest of them all. Shen Miao is very revenge-focused in the beginning but shifted in the middle of the story.

In terms of romance, again I think Star General is the most romance focused with Ill-fated Consort being the least. Malicious Empress being somewhere in between. He Yan and Xiao Jue is also way more playful with one another compare to the other couple.

Personally I still like Malicious Empress more as a story, I think is the most well rounded. However, I think I might understand why some would like A Star General more. He Yan is in a more likable character, more bubbly and funnier. Her dynamic with the male character Xiao Jue (male lead) is also cuter. This definitely more character development and more focus on romance. He Yan also simply more earnest on trying to live a more fulfilling life. So there are definitely a lot of things I rather enjoy here that doesn't exist or has very little of in the other two novels. However, I've read Malicious Empress more than once and I don't think I'll read A Star General again. Don't get me wrong. It's a nice story but it's not something I felt an urge to revisit later on.

Pros:

-More character development for female lead

-He Yan spend more time living life and doing thing she didn't have a chance before (making friends, falling in love, and just generally building relationship with people around her...)

-Interesting side characters/stories. Her master has an interesting side story. Her buddies in the army is also cool. Her brother and father in the second body was also nicer, i.e. she get to have a family she never had originally. Her original mother is also pretty tragic because she felt neglected in the original family but never get to know how much her mother loves her.

Cons:

-Slower. Thing happened slowly for the first 190 chapter and then suddenly tons of thing happened at the last 20 chapters. As if author just wants to drag things out in the beginning and all of the sudden wanted to just end things as quickly as possible.

-More filler. Felt story could've been trimmed down by a quarter and even a third and not much would've been lost.

-Chu Zhao (Second male lead) - I love a good second male lead but not how it's written here. I think author tries to write in a second male lead to add more conflict to the relationship between MC and ML but at the same time is not experience at writing a good second male lead. As a result, the "conflict" is shallow and the character is underutilized. On the other hand, I like his back story, which I felt the author is stronger at (... developing back stories).

-The court political seems very underdeveloped here. Like the fight between crown and fourth prince. And the conflict between Xiao Jue and the Minister Xu.

-The revenge is rather unsatisfying. The way the whole family was exposed was kinda underwhelming. The downfall of the original He family felt so underwhelming. Don't want to go into detail.

-Character just don't seem as intelligent. I understand He Yan is not the scheming witty type but how come everyone just become so s*upid. Character in her other novel seems way more intelligent or at least gives off a facade of being very witty but unfortunately none of the characters here felt particular smart. Chu Zhao and Xiao Jue is probably the most intelligent, I guess. Chu Zhao, which was built up as a most capable student of Minister Xu, ended up not doing much at the end in particularly his plan with crown prince. Xiao Jue although brought downfall Minister Xu but kinda weirdly didn't anticipated how drastic court change after. Minister Xu, which author build as a mastermind behind a lot of scheme, didn't do anything in the end especially how easily he was taken out. Character in other novel seems 2, 3, 4 step ahead of the other party and there seems to be a constant battle of wits. However, there's none here. <<less

That is another fantastic novel from this author with, for the first time, a different type of Female Lead.

And is not because the Female Lead becomes a general, but because the Female Lead is a positivist, lively, always cheerful character, which contrasts with her previous works reincarnated Female Leads a lot.

I really liked how she also made the Male Lead different this time around. A little tsundere like the previous works, yes, but still less cold-hearted and black-bellied, and more conflicted inside than his peers.

The only criticism I still have... more>> for this author is her lack of describing intimate scenes. It is always cut before anything can happen, and I don't mean to subtly describing the whole actions, but she doesn't even describe the prelude nor the memories of it. I think this is something I always miss from her works, despite I always grow to love the main couple and their interactions a lot. <<less

I have always liked the author of this novel. This one is different from his other works. The story is beautiful and tragic especially in the beginning. I was hooked reading it that I just used mtl until the end. But it still made me laugh and cry at times. It is definitely worth reading.

I haven't felt at such a loss for a long time after finishing a novel. I mtled this one because I was impatient to wait for translations, but the details in the story were still understandable.

What to say? The characters really just grew into me that I felt quite sad after finishing this novel. There are so many heartwarming moments and each character had their backstory.

I absolutely loove the fl's personality. She's like the man instead of XJ LOL. She's arrogant, straightforward, pure, hearty, and despite the past she suffered... more>> under her family, she didn't focus on vengeance. She's also very independent and reasonable.

Spoiler

Like when she set off to Rundu because she knew He Rufei wont send in reinforcements, she informed ML of this but Xiao Jue did not have any basis to trust her or u could say that even if he did trust her, he had no reason to send off reinforcements because He Rufei was closer to that area. It was so exciting when she went off on her own. We really need more FLs like this and as well as more MLs like Xiao Jue who doesn't get led by his personal feelings but focus on the bigger picture. It just felt very realistic for me.

[collapse]

ML was very suspicious of her at the start and the romance developed really slowly, but that's okay, because FL got into action herself. such an awesome FL! Hey, after reading this novel, I don't really wanna go back to reading fast paced romance without action anymore.

ML is also very supportive of her and told her to do whatever she wanted, and that she didn't have to live under any pretense. They were really meant for each other. I have to say I have a crush on both the FL and ML ╮ (╯▽╰) ╭

I guess if there is one thing that bore me out in the entire novel is the palace politics. (Also probably because it was such a headache to read it in MTL) Anyway,

Spoiler

He Rufei and her past husband got dealt with so quickly tbh, as same with the crown prince. The Uto's weren't that smart too as one of the main villains in the story. The politics arc wans't really long but still did quite manage to bore me out for about 2 chapters. After all those politics, I just preferred seeing FL defeating enemies in the military.

[collapse]

And if I may add a second minor one... maybe the flashbacks? Don't get me wrong, they're extremely major to the plot, but some of them are reaally long. By what I mean long, they literally last 3-4 chapters iirc.

But overall, I'd still rate it 5/5. You might feel like the beginning of the story is too fast-paced and honestly, I dropped this novel for 3 months at the 60th chapter because I felt that the MC was too op when she got her rebirth, but the story develops stably after that when she joined the army. This novel is the best one for me out of all Qian Shan Cha Ke's stories. Let me warn you though that the romance in this one is an absolutely slow-burn.

Spoiler

If I remember correctly, they only became lovers around chapter 200, but it's absolutely worth it. I don't like fast paced romance and would gladly exchange them for better plot development any time. This story has one of the best romance developments I've read.

[collapse]

Sigh. Back to the book hunt... quickly I need more kickass fls <<less

I re-read this novel several times already.

I like the story especially FL being female general which is quite rare.

ML is smart and nice to FL different from those other cold male leads who ignore FL all the time.

ALL IN ALL, RECOMMENDED!

It's so good. Recommended <3

A lot of things happened and I really want to rant about it but I'm also so lazy so I won't. Anyways, I loved the story which I didn't expect at first.

Spoiler

The beginning was fairly good but it's only above average for me so it surprised me it's golden. Well maybe because it's only the introduction and not much happened yet. It only starts to be so good it's glittering maybe around the middle (?).

I love the MC <3

The MC was originally a simple girl and all her golden finger was earned from the hard work and obstacle she faced in her first life. So I kinda understand why she's not overly smart and sometimes seems naive because she's not really that good in the first place. She's not a scheming person so her plans and responses are straightforward (But she's so proficient in the art of war). And because she needed the ml's recognition to gain her way to revenge, she laid her skills open other than her sword skills (Since he might recognize her from her past life). Her only upper hand is she can lie straightfaced and disguise herself thoroughly. This is why the ML is very suspicious of her and doesn't know what her real thoughts are.

At the beginning, I lowkey don't like her. Maybe because the ML was too smart in contrast to the MC. It's only around the last half I wanna slap my past self (How dare you don't like her you jerk!!).

Like the ML said in the story, the MC was a very contradictory person. Another reason why he can't understand her thoroughly. The MC might boast with her chins up but in fact, she has very low esteem. To the point that the ML needs to lay out his feelings before the MC believes he likes her. Her skills are mediocre and even low and the reason why she's so good now is because of her hard work in her past life. Her morals and principles are so likable.

She's very proficient in disguise the ML always believes she's lying. For him, she's a scammer through and through. Well, she really was, but in fact, the ML is the person she lied to the least. So when the ML found out about the truth. He realized that the MC was not lying. It's so heartbreaking I cried buckets.

The confession part was *chef's kiss <3 it's so beautiful!

Overall, it's a treasure to share so read it people!

I still want to rant more about the side characters but they are so likable I'm too lazy to type. But I still want to say I love them.

Slow story but generally interesting. There are a few points where it seems like the plotline is dragging and the ending was a bit rushed compared to the slow pace of the rest of the novel. I'm still giving it a 5/5 because I enjoyed it and it made me successfully procrastinate on everything for nearly 3 days so I could finish this story.

MTL quality is pretty decent, but the names can get confusing. Go ahead if you don't want to wait for the translated version, but the group translating... more>> really does a great job. <<less

I love, love this book! By far my favorite from this author. While it also has the rebirth/revenge theme common to her other works, it's a breath of fresh air in approach since the protagonist is in disguise as a man and doesn't have to care about the same type of gender conventions that the other book protagonists do. He Yan is also a protagonist who I love to root for because while she gets her well-deserved revenge in the end, she's kind and loyal and sacrifices to help others... more>> as well. She's also hilarious and shameless. She's not naturally talented but put in the hard work to rise to her original position in her first life and then build from the bottom again in her second.

I love the full circle nature of the book - He Yan finding her new family, the gradually revealed connections to the ML, and He Yan getting back everything she deserves and more.

The romance also uses one of my favorite tropes and feels deeply satisfying by the end. <<less

Very rarely do you see a novel with this genre to be completed and wrapped up beautifully! I really like the fact that it finished early because the author already finished their story to tell. I remember my first few novels in this genre spanning around 300-800 chapters and it kept dragging on and on.

This novel is amazing and the author is a really good writer. All of the characters presented has motives and there wasn't an obvious one-off character just "for the sake of the plot". The characters were... more>> dynamic and true to their motives/ personalities to the very end. Although I MTL-ed it meaning the grammar was horrible but I still cried because of the story. Every character offers something to the story. I love how the people that the MC interacted with got their own little segment of who they are and what happened to them.

This novel leads you through ups and downs with beautiful crafted intrigue (that wasn't over the top) sprinkled in generous amound of world building along the way. No character is thrown away and their paths cross for reason. Characters grow and the antagonist aren't dumb. Every character felt dynamic because they're fighting their own battles and just happened to cross paths with the MC. The MC ML don't solve their problems for them. The author really makes it feel like a small world rather than just a story focusing on MC and ML. Overall, it's a really good read! Highly recommend!!! <<less

One of my favorite LNs! I am counting down the days until tencent/wetv releases the TV adaptation. I don't believe there is animated or comic (manhua) adaptation at this time.

I love the trial and tribulations that the female protagonist goes through in her "2nd life". This regression is a bit different as she isn't able to go back in time, but rather switch places with another girl who was committing su*cide around the same time she is mu*dered, so the timeline is a continuation. So her body is actually much... more>> weaker than her prior life.

She is 2x true female general! The side characters were really cool and really loved her Hermit Master and I legit

. Her romantic interest is a total tsundere, lol. So folks who love female generals, please check out this novel!

I love the relationships she has with the side characters but be warned there are some tragic deaths in the novel. I believe this is a bit different book than the author normally write, but I would love to read other novels by them in this vein. <<less

Rebirth of a Star General by 千山茶客 / Qian Shan Cha Ke had long chapter. I was also quite surprised by the good writing about some weapons and warfare compared to other novels.

Rebirth of a Star General presents the story of a small noblewoman who lives as a man for family but turns out to be betrayed. The woman had the talent and ability to be a hard-working general! His physique was forged by daily training and bloody warfare was also brutal.

The female general couldn't believe anyone remembered her name... more>> when she reincarnated into another body. The female general didn't know if anyone else remembered, but in a lot backstory... there is two (Her master and...). That is the writer's cleverness to unravel the common thread between the characters. Not only the main FL and ML get character development but also ML2, the younger brothers, other generals, the soldiers who are close to FL. All of them have a portion of the story that makes the reader happy or moved with them.

Ah, General Yan He in his bonus chapter made me cry non-stop. (T0T) /

In the first 20 chapters, we will be shown the hard work of our FL He Yan. 30-100 chapters will go up and down the storyline. Some may not like FL's arrogance at certain times. Chapter 100 to bonus chapters it is a delicious main dish. FL and ML's struggle to be able to survive their respective nightmares. Our childhood ML also had its own trauma. Battles and sieges in important cities. Then the rebellion of the princes. Who can survive to the end?

20% of the trainin time

20% of cases and people searches

20% love story

20 % of past stories

20 % war

My rating is 5 stars because I really enjoy reading Rebirth of a Star General. <<less

No powerful system, no modern knowledge but a FL who hard working, but still human, with all its element..

The story is not that complicated but from beginning to the end very consistent and well planed.. The delivery of story also not boring..

... more>> All character development, heroic background, poetic philosophy, humanity and military knowledge.. All include in this novel woven into so touching story

ML also has his background., although at first I don't really like the way he treat FL.. But later he has char development and when we know the background it's acceptable

This is the third novel I have read by author Qian Shancha Ke. This book is entirely different from her other 2 books (Malicious Empress and Ill-Fated Consort) in terms of the way of revenge. The way of revenge is ruthless in those books, whereas here it is more compassionate. The author had said that this book will be different from her previous work, and while reading, I understand her words as this book is more about family love, loyalty, friendship, comradery, war strategies, emotions, and of course, romance with... more>> lots of teasing. The MAIN DIFFERENCE is our main character, FL, He Yan, reincarnated into a different body who coincidentally has the same name.

He Yan, whether it's her past life or her second chance life, is always a hardworking girl. If she doesn't know something, she works hard for it. What I love about her is that after she was reborn, she knows that this body doesn't have the strength that is needed for martial arts, so she trained herself with various methods. Although she died in a heartless way in her past life, she didn't become a cold, apathetic woman. She is a big, kind-hearted girl with a playful yet innocent personality who loves to flirt with our ML, Xiao Jue. 🤭🤭🤭 I still remember a scene where He Yan and Xiao Jue stay in one bedroom where there was a spring painting (kind of erotica drawing) drawn on the wall. There she openly said that she had seen many spring paintings (because of being general in past life, many of her subordinates who were generally men talked about seeing spring paintings and all that stuff), leaving Xiao Jue dump folded. And if you read Chinese novels, you should know that seeing spring paintings together means having s*x. But He Yan didn't know about this. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Our ML, Xiao Jue, is beautifully handsome (as the author loves to describe all her MLs), intelligent, honest, cold, and lazy. However, as the story progresses, it shows he is also emotional, a little shy, jealous, and an angry bird who loves to get angry when he is jealous. He can't compete with He Yan in terms of teasing and often gets flustered. He respects He Yan's intelligence and brilliance in war strategies and army formation. He isn't your typical ML who loves to protect his love interest even when she knows martial arts. Xiao Jun knows He Yan can handle enemies in war alone. He didn't hold her back and let her flourish throughout. He becomes her anchor, offering the security and affection she desperately craved but never received.

Supporting Characters: There is a long list of supporting characters. My favorites are Xiao Jue's friends, his nephew, his brother and sister-in-law, He Yan's father and brother, and her friends from the army, Song Taotao. There are some sub-plots and side characters whose lives were so well written by the author that tears welled up in my eyes. 🥹🫠🤌🏻💗 <<less

I like that its realistic in the way that it expressed the characters emotions such as grief, longing, and love. The end of this story was kind of melancholic, especially the side couple extra. This novel is all about the growth of a woman, the pain she has to go through in life, and the vibrance of life. I think this might be the only fantasy but realistic novel I've ever read. You will encounter death that is unexpected but is absolutely essential for the characters to grow and you... more>> will witness the strength within each of their story. I love it ♥️🫠 <<less

First of all idk if it’s too slow or its the character that made me drop this? Like there were a lot thing that doesn’t make sense and it ick me off so much that I couldn’t find the mood to enjoy this novel. Also I do love, love malicious empress and someone said this has better romance and I’m quite excited to give this a try but..

my first ick- how old the FL in her previous life before she died? She mentioned 19 which is ridiculous because she joined... more>> the army at 14, she went many hardships and experienced many events in her “many years ago” which she always reminisced but then she’s also married for 1yr? So if she died at 19-20 her “many years of experiences ” of becoming the legendary general is only 2-3yrs? Unless she’s immortal it’s impossible for her to be so skillful and powerful.

My second ick- she’s too impulsive and overestimated herself which often put her life in danger, she also act too suspicious and if not for the “protagonist halo” she would have been accused of being a spy and beheaded, she’s also quite naive and clumsy. The fact that her identity was not discovered in her last life is questionable

my third ick- how she didn’t love her body and constantly get hurt and full of scars just like her previous life. I feel tired watching her jumping around seeking death for her revenge while also not having a care that she can die anytime yet haven’t even touch a single hair of the evildoers. The female lead is indeed admirable but not likable to my taste, reading this novel makes me feel like a cannon fodder whose consciousness was awaken and watch the “protagonist halo” take effect from the sideline. As for the ML, so far although it reached a 100 chapters he’s giving nothing.

not sure if I’ll continue reading this but I really don’t like tomboy FL so idk 🤷🏻‍♀️ <<less

This is my favorite out of the author's works, and many other works. FL isn't trapped in a mind set of vengeance. She's learning who she is under her own name, shaping her personality and her own merits belong to her now. In fact if her cousin was a good general/leader and didn't cause unnecessary harm to keep the secret I feel that FL would've just started a new life. Rather than revenge for herself it was for protection of the people who had fought with her, the common people... more>> she wants to safe guard. It is the will to correct a wrong that strengthened her on this journey that impressed me.

ML and FL have so many intersections that is hard to deny that they fated for each other. It's poignant how lonely they both were growing up. ML had such an impact in her life, he gave her strength at her lowest points that kept her going in her first life and this one.

I've mtl this book 6-7 times and each time it hits me hard. How much they cherished the simplicity in just being together make them one of my favorite couples. <<less

I never took so long to finish a novel, not because it's bad, but because it was so good that I didn't wanna finish it.

Both MC and ML were so deep and full of layers, they had a brilliant development!

She had a second chance for life and don't wasted it in revenge, but she tries to grow better to be what she always wanted to be, but this time, being herself, not a fake one. Don't worry, though, the antagonists get what they deserv.

The MC is cold and kinda lonely,... more>> that's why the romance take a time to happen, but it's not bad, the things happened the moment they had to.

Some misunderstandings made me really angry though, the Rundun city moment, when they think she was there because of a man... GOSH! That made me angry!

And things got worst and worst for a time... And then they get better and better.

The side couples broke my heart, I guess the fact that one goes e the other stays made everything more painful than anything else. Because the ones that stayed had a reason to, even if they wanted to go.

I'm gonna cry again...

Well, that's an absoluty amazing story, I would gladly read more about it... But I guess it overs the moment it has to be. <<less

This is honestly so good! I didn't expect that it'll be so fun, exciting, and heartbreaking at the same time. FL is strong, but she has her weaknesses, as do the ML. They're often misunderstood, but they prefer to improve themselves, rather than let those misunderstandings bother them.

I hope I can read another story like this.
