So much love for this story. After starting it, quickly grew addicted and blew through the 179 translated chapters. Usually, for a story that I love so much and translated so close to the end, I would definitely MTL to the end, but there were some special circumstances. Side note: the apocalypse kind of reminds me of the 7 Days to Die game... or possibly I've just watched videos of 7 Days way too much...

This is probably my ideal story. A clever, calm, sarcastic, and courageous MC (thank you for... more>> not making a weak whiny uke thank you thank you) and a similarly sarcastic, domineering, and OP ML. There's no unnecessary drama (esp relationship drama), with the only drama being interesting plot drama. That's always a plus, especially with these BL novels. The interactions between the MC and ML are utterly adorable and there's so much fluffy time that your heart melts along with them. Both the MC and ML are strong and beautiful, so naturally both of them have a lot of admirers. But while the ML might be really perceptive towards his love rivals for the MC, he is totally clueless about his own admirers, and vice versa for the MC. This juxtaposition is both hilarious and sweet, since both the MC and ML have no eyes for anyone except for each other. Side characters and couples are adorable and hilarious, wonderful additions to the story that I have grown to love.

That being said, there are a bunch of random small plot holes (where did a random woman find a cursed dagger that even the strongest Immortal couldn't fix? etc.) that don't really take away from the story, especially for someone like me who doesn't really care too much about holes in the first place as long as it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the story. Also after chapter 177ish, the MC and ML go to the Immortal Realm, ditching the rest of the characters. I don't care as much about not seeing the rest of the characters as much as the MC getting amnesia and reverting to a child. Come on, I want the strong clever MC who loves the ML! Get rid of this random kid. I'm sure he'll revert in the last few chapters, but the MTL is too confusing and I don't have the patience to wade through a dozen chapters about the weak child MC. Smh. But that's whatever, since we already had 170ish chapters of happiness. More importantly, how dare the author snip out all of the smex scenes?? This is a tragedy, a TRAGEDY. I demand my smex scenes!!

**

Edit:

Spoiler

First spoiler I've used in a review! Just read ShenHua's spoiler of the second arc, and found out that MC never regains his memories! Wtf! What is the author doing?? Your memories are your life! Now I'm angry.

[collapse]

**

Leaving all that aside, totally love this story and really appreciate the calm warm fluff that's spread out through the story. The dedication and love between the MC and ML is cavity-inducing, and I love having been able to follow along their journey. <<less

Currently reading....

OK I'm still on chapter 17 and I'm so pissed. These days I've been looking for novels about post apocalyptic. I don't mind reading hoarding novels but there's a freaking limit. What was the Mc's age again?... I forgot

Spoiler

To start with, I don't mind him becoming Mary Sue after coming back. What boggles my mind is, how the heck no one questions why a young person is withdrawing all his money at bank!!!! 7 million and when he tells them to leave the room, they agree soo easily. And he disappears with the money and all. Why isn't he on the news?

Second. The warrant. It makes no sense they'd post a f*cking warrant when looking for someone. On top of that, the MC, on seeing that, quickly think about disappearing instead of questioning why the f the police or whoever posted that, are looking for him.

Third. He is an effing fugitive (willingly became). How can he go around buying things and people don't recognize him.

Fourth. When he is buying the hummer, author you mention that he cannot drive at all. Tell me why two paragraphs below, you had him "starts the engine of his car and drives it to the appointed place." I wouldn't have mind if 5 chapters later he magically starts driving, he's Mary Sue after all. But not 2 paragraphs later!!!

Fifth. Gasoline. 1 million dollar gasoline. Can it be bought that easy??? I...

[collapse]

17 chapters. I'm only on chapter 17 and the heaven defying laws are already high. I wonder how much more ridiculous things the author have added. I started this novel 3-4 days ago. I usually completes one in 1-2 days. Chapter 17, and the amount of time I had to put on hold the novel. So far even the hoarding is boring. I've been looking for an apocalyptic hoarding, and this isn't it.

Edit: stopped at 175

They were preparing for marriage before the big battle. Skipped some chapters to land on a completely different world. The novel suddenly went from apocalypse to Cultivation. Meh, not interested <<less

To all the whiners, shounen ai = boy X boy| male X male | yaoi | gay and everything in between. Its there in the tags. Shounen Ai is the milder form of yaoi. Don't like it ? Don't read it. And learn about the tags for God's sake. Don't like anything homos*xual ? Then stay away from Yaoi, Yuri, shounen ai and shoujo ai tags. S*upid people who don't know about the tags and then leave bad reviews even though it's their own s*upidity. ???

Moving on. Its not... more>> a bad novel per se but I've definitely read better. Started off promising but on the latter chapters became rushed. There was a sudden shift to romcom in the latter chapters. Its good for a light reading. Don't look too deeply into the plot. <<less

This one is really good. A Zombie apocalypse with BL, aye.

It's got an interesting plot with all the supernatural powers 'n sh*t, it even explains clearly where/how the whole thing with zombies started.

Ughh, I need more of this. So far there's no s*x or even a kiss... I think the novel's plot is like half-serious, not necessarily serious enough to want to save the world or wholeheartedly focusing on surviving the apocalypse. It's kinda a lil' rushy in the beginning, like there's a lot of things happening but... more>> not enough of details about it.

Nevertheless, it's still interesting to read and I really like it. <<less

Please don't get confused about my rating of 4 stars. Those are given only for half of the first arc. I didn't read the 2nd arc (Immortal realm, starting with 176) and only barely managed to finish the first arc.

The reason for this will be explained below. In fact, my rating for Arc 1 is only 3 stars, the fourth one was added for the perfect translation. Thanks to the translator for finishing Arc 1 :) Well done!

Okay.

As common for apocalypse novel, it starts with the rebirth of MC (Huo... more>> Zaiyuan) after he was killed by his relatives during the escape from the zombies. He's a 2nd generation and starts with going back to his stepmother's place who wants to split the family. His father died and she wants to get the house for herself, so MC who knows about this agrees, demands money and the family heirloom (a writing brush) left behind by his father which *BADUM TSS* turns out to contain a space, including a cultivation inheritance.

He takes the money and leaves (Note, unlike other apocalypse novel, MC although having some money, still is not the kind of person who runs around basically buying several whole-sale markets at once, at least from my impression). MC tries to prepare for the upcoming apocalypse by gathering supplies, learning taosim from the inheritance and keeping a low profile. He's a strong MC and more or less due to the cultivation, turns into a "cold beauty" shou.

Unknown to MC, ML showed up at the villa shortly after MC left. ML is in search for MC because of a divination made by a taoism grandmaster (friend of ML's grandfather), that said ML needs to find MC to avoid his own death because of a bad fate or something like that.

Unable to get a hold of MC, ML starts chasing by even using a military search warrant. Erm.. oh, I forgot to introduce that guy XD

ML is Long Zhanye, 3rd generation soldier, smoker, ruffian and shameless.

ML is unhappy because he can't find MC, MC is also unhappy because of the search warrant and thus avoids any and all people with relation to police or army. Fast forward. Apocalypse finally happens, due to a variety of coincidences, MC and ML meet and start travelling together without knowing each other's identity.

They are strangers, but become friends and immediately after brothers. A few days later, MC's childhood friend shows up... unconscious as a prey of some gangsters.. getting rescued by MC and ML and that's the first time I got annoyed with the story.

Reason: That childhood friend... if placed in any other novel would be a cannon fodder whose life and death are only mentioned in passing with at most two sentences. But here? Crybaby makes a fuss. Ran away from his boyfriend because of a misunderstanding without even asking for clarifications, playing a 1.000.000 volt light bulb for MC and ML while trying to sell meng, chattering endlessly and being annoying as heck... Then his boyfriend shows up.. Childhood friend makes a scene, they get together again and this side-couple suddenly starts stealing screentime from MC and ML. ARGH! -.-

Anyway. They group up together, fight zombies, return to A City base (did anyone notice, the most powerful base in apocalypse novel is always in A city? xD) to reunite with ML's grandfather etc..

MC gets more powerful, ML gets more powerful, and suddenly, author-san takes the pot and smashes it to the ground.

Spoiler

MC turns out to be a reincarnation of a powerful cultivator, ML turns out to be the reincarnation of that cultivator's lover and is in fact a dragon cast out by his clan. A buddhist monk pops out of nowhere who's a friend of the cultivator and ML and brings his own lover along. Said lover hates MC for no reason. Why did those two even show up here?

MC's original body (of the cultivator) is found... MC's stepmother gets a cursed dagger from who knows where and kills MC in order to add some more unnecessary drama and angst. ML regains his memory of his dragon-self and the power along with it, transfers MC's soul back into his cultivator body... etc blah. Finally MC and ML find the origin of the apocalypse, fight the endboss of Arc 1 and then ascend into the upper realm (start of Arc 2)...

[collapse]

..........

Author-sama, honestly, if you want to write about cultivation novel with several realms, fine. If you want to write about dogblood with cursed items etc, fine. You wanna write about apocalpyse, cultivation, xianxia, slice of life... feel free to do so, but please don't just go ahead and smash it all into one pot (novel)... Make different novel out of it or turn it into a proper QT novel..... *sighs*

As much as I loved the beginning of Arc 1, at some point my disappointment grew with each new chapter and when it reached the cursing I seriously had to force myself to finish that arc.

I don't plan on ever reading the 2nd arc, but I'm catching myself re-reading the beginning of this first arc time and time again.. What should I say? *shrugs in helplessness*

It seems this novel and I are in a love-hate relationship and I still can't let go of it. <<less

I'll give it 3 stars because the first time I read it 3 years ago I loved it. This time around, I barely even liked it. If I was to rate it now, it probably be only 2 stars.

Read ShenHua's review, many of the issues they had with the story I did as well, but unlike their review I wasn't a fan of the MC and ML. I liked the concept of mixing zombie and cultivation, but this story was too bland for my taste. The ending arc was unecessary... more>> and dragged the story down further in my opinion.

The MC sounded more fun in his past life than the current. MC is the cold beauty type of Shou, not enough personality shines through. He could be a cold MC, but with more to him.

ML is more than the typical cold CEO type but he is kind of a jerk, it gets explained somewhat but I wish he was a bit nicer to his subordinats and wasn't as possessive over the MC. It almost like the MC can't have any interactions with anyone. I liked ML at the begining of the apocalypse more than the ending ML.

I do agree with another the wife and sister in law bits got annoying. I usually don't mind it much as long as the Shou is okay with it but the MC kept asking them to stop and they never do.

Not much drama or face slapping, mostly just fluffiness and cultivation. I like fluffiness and golden fingers so those parts were good to me, just wanted more from this story.

All in all not mad I read it the first time, but wish I didn't read it a 2nd. It's too bad too because I love zombie apocalypse bl.

Translation was great through all of them. I remember the first time around I MTL'd and had some issues with parts, so thank you translators! <<less

I certainly have a mixed feeling towards this story. It was... for lack of better words... a hodge podge... seriously. The author couldn't make up their mind about what concept to use when writing, so they just let their 'pen just flow' writing whatever came to mind. I wonder if they were indecisive or lazy or simply both. I can't say I dislike it, but it was truly confusing.

Pretty good so far so I'll keep on reading. However....

I would prefer if the MC didn't seem way too fortunate (space, plantation/food, clothing, etc) because it gives an unrealistic vibe during an apocalypse. Everything is solved using his Taoist/Monk abilities to which is gets very bland after awhile. The MC is the only one with special abilities but it would be better if people emerge with abilities (also gives an unrealistic vibe) I mean, for real how could everyone be plain and normal and the MC is the only one... more>> with an inter-dimentional space and powers. And like no one questions it. I appreciate the ML and the others for using human skills to get through most obstacles as it keeps things real though.

I will say the romance is gradual but where the love start is hard to pinpoint. The ML immediately gets intimate after a few exchanges with the MC and that's too quick. The interactions are very cute and heart-warming to read though.

I'll keep on reading since I like the story overall and want to know how the truth will come out regarding the MC rebirth and secret identity etc. <<less

Subpar, I'm surprised I actually got through so many chapters.

The MC is just way too OP, especially in the beginning. Seriously, golden fingers dropping out of the sky. Furthermore, there's nothing about this story that is all that original, and the characters aren't that developed either. The interesting point would be the unusual mix of zombies and cultivation, but it kinda feels like an out of place combination.

There's also a ton of plot holes and choppy storytelling. However, it is written / translated decently, so it's not an unbearable read.... more>> It's just not great. <<less

It's just meh for me. 2.5, rounded down.

I skimmed until the two male leads met, and its insta-love on ML's part, so I don't even get to be excited seeing their relationship develop. This kid got absolutely everything, and there's lots of cultivation in those first chapters. I just feel like this book tried to put in too much at once and it all just fails. And from what I've read in other reviews, it just gets worse from there.

I'll probably skim to the end because I can't stop reading... more>> a book once I've started, either skimming or finding spoilers, I just have to know how it ends. <<less

Despite the great plot setting I'm still put off by the fact of how these two guys met and clicked right off the bat!

I personally prefer slow development in terms of relationship. But this definitely doesn't follow that cos they just met and not a few conversations later, they start trusting each other enough to speak of their secrets and acting like they've known each other for ages!

Like for God's sake it's the Apocalypse!! Be a lil more vigilant, will you? Don't just get so familiar with each other so... more>> soon. I get all that predestined stuff but c'mon who doesn't like a lil tension cos that's what makes us look forward to the day they hook up all the more!

But in this case, NOPE! I really like the story but honestly I won't be able to continue reading this for this one particular reason. I just won't.. sigh..

Maybe I'll go back to continue reading it after I'm done ridding my displeasure over this fact but I don't think that's likely.. <<less

Rating 2/5

Summary: MC, Huo Zaiyuan, is pushed off a cliff into a pile of zombie devil ants by his stepmother in the apocalypse. He wakes up back in time to approximately one year before the apocalypse was set to begin. Armed with knowledge about the coming apocalypse and a magic space granted to him through an heirloom from his cultivator ancestor, MC sets out to prepare for the end of times.

DNF: Before I even start talking about the MC or the setting or the plot, I need to talk... more>> about the writing. The translator does a fairly good job. But the pacing, the storyline, the character motivations, and powers are all a mess. Why is ML, a normal person, stronger than MC, a cultivator???

There are so many things that are just ridiculously illogical. It's not even the usual ridiculousness of a "Tackling the Apocalypse with a Magical Space" novel, but even more illogical. This is mainly what caused me to DNF.

The other part is just how confused the narrative seems. It feels like all the apocalypse stuff and romance is secondary to MC's cultivation, which would be fine, except we don't get much of that either. There's not enough apocalypse to be about the apocalypse; not enough romance to be about romance; and not enough cultivation to be about cultivation.

Setting:

It's a zombie apocalypse, but there are devil ants? And MC is a cultivator? ML is ?????

MC:

He's kind of wishy-washy. Frankly most of the characters so far are wishy-washy, but MC is just....

MC wakes up back in time and through some series of circumstances finds and activates his family heirloom which turns out to be a mystical space that was left to him by an ancestor who was a cultivator. This ancestor was also kind enough to leave him cultivation methods. Right after getting this good news, a military warrant for MC's arrest is issued on television, meaning that MC must go on the run (?) to avoid getting caught. At no point does he attempt to find out why there's a military warrant out for him.

He plays cat-n-mouse with the military while stocking up for the apocalypse. How does he stock up? He goes and buys a bunch of swords, seeds, and SUVs (Hummers actually but I wanted the alliteration). Then he decides to buy vegetables and fruits from a small mountain village. He actually goes to the village and stays there for six months while purchasing all of the farmers' excess crop and cultivating. Somehow, NO ONE IN THE VILLAGE THINKS IT'S WEIRD THAT ALL THE PURCHASED VEGGIES KEEP DISAPPEARING!!!

MC's characterization is a mess too. He was supposed to be smart but like, he keeps doing s*upid stuff. I think what happened is that Author realized that if MC was going to be so OP as a cultivator with a magical space, then no one would care about the ML. So Author nerfs MC.

MC also has no clear motivations or goals. What is doing? Why is he doing it? No clue. The only discernable motive for the MC after the apocalypse began seems to be survival and cultivating. In that case, again, why bother with ML?

ML:

I feel so bad for this ML because Author made him a freaking caricature. ML is a weird, "sexy", and strong (?) pe*verted sad*st whose only personality traits are smoking, flirting with MC, and beating up his subordinates.

ML is the reason that MC had a military arrest warrant out for him. Turns out, in this timeline, ML's grandpa went to talk to his Taoist buddy who looked at ML and was like "He's going to die when turns 30." Grandpa was like "Noooooo! My beloved grandson. HoW Do We SavE hIm?" and the Taoist was like "Find him his wife (which is MC)."

And then Grandpa tells ML to go locate his wife and bring him back. ML decides to do this by issuing a military warrant for MC's arrest.

Side Note: This was so s*upid I literally banged my head against the wall. That's not how warrants work. TBF, most of the practical things in this novel are soooo impractical that I think Author must have been a high school student.

There's really not much else to say about ML except that we're supposed to find him sexy and attractive, but I feel like he just has Eigth Grade Syndrome.

Other Characters:

The only important ones so far (and I used the word "important" so so so loosely) are MC's friends, Li Qing and Qin Jun, who are a same-s*x couple.

Supposedly the three of them are BFFs, but MC didn't contact them or even think of them for a year. <<less

Maybe because I have read too many zombie apocalypse stories before coming to this one, it's not that great of a story because of how OP the MC is. Heirlooms and all and people learning stuff like writing on yellow paper with red ink during a zombie apocalypse isn't that appealing to me. I got bored of it knowing that the end would be ML and MC being super overpowered and having the lives of rulers. Gave it a 2 stars coz meh. But for the translator, I gave 5 stars coz she/he did a good job.

It was kinda a letdown for me since I was expecting a little twist to a zombie apocalyptic world where the MC has more advantages and interesting experiences due to his power ups, and maybe because I prefer the slice of life-ish apocalyptic world like in Reborn Otaku's Code of Practice for the Apocalypse where they just focus on having a good life, but then as the story progress, it... more>> just became like a cultivation story set in modern day (although I love cultivation stories, but maybe as it's own).

Still kept reading it until the finale in the apocalypse arc since it's tolerable but decided not to continue until the final ending.

Spoiler

After reading some spoilers, I didn't like how the story just went back to zero and someone said that there were just a lot of annoying and unnecessary stuff right after, but happy that they had a kid. I was kinda expecting that they would go back to mortal realm coz if that happened then I would read up to the finale.

4.5 actually. It was a good read, it was different from the other apocalypse novels, you can say that the problem was really solved. The main couple are really nice, Huo Zaiyuan and Long Zhanye are really mtb hahaha. There is a side couple, and I found a comment here saying they dropped this cause of the side couple but there really wasn't much tho? It would be a waste to drop this. I even liked them (as someone who doesn't like other couples aside from mc's lol). I dropped... more>> this at chapter 188 and read the last chapter cause, , , I came here for the apocalypse, but I'm happy that they had a happy ending at last.

Spoiler

I like how it was different from the normal apocalypse by having the taoists and making the apocalypse caused by a demon or smthng. It was definitely different ok. The ML also wasn't a strong ability users like the others and they had to be scratch or bitten before they can become an ability user, altho that part I think, wasn't explained why? I liked the mortal realm, the cultivation realm, I stopped there cause I no longer felt like reading it, but the ending was good, lol HZY got praignant HAHAHA btw I do have a complaint tho, it seriously annoyed me. The smexy scenes by the main couple is less wordy than the other unnecessary and annoying villain side characters, seriously. Their actions are always narrated where you can easily imagine it but when it's the MC they are always cut off before you can even start to imagine anything. So annoying.

Now for the general review; I listened to the translator and didnt continue after c176. I give this 3 stars just because I didn't hate the novel. At least, personally, the characters are likable. The ML is not the same as the others. The author didn't turn the ML as a domineering and jerk male lead. So, I like what the author did there. Another, the shou is also lovable not too much of a white lotus but at least a fighter in his way.

Now regarding the concerns of the previous reviewers of this novel, I would like to agree on some especially regarding the... more>> plot of the novel. When it comes to the fluffiness and sweetness of the couples, the author did a good job. BUT. When it comes to the apocalypse part:

The author spent more time on the MC gathering his materials in preparation for the incoming apocalypse. I feel like the author could have done it differently. Though I didn't hate the action of the ML and MC were playing the cat and mouse, I feel like it was lacking. I also like the approach on how the author subtly shows the past of the two characters. They did a good job already just slash the snipped parts. I couldn't really blame the author for that since china censors BL so much. So I just have to take it. Only if it continues to go on like that.

Also I disagree on those who says that the shou is overpowered.

Spoiler

In the novel, he wasn't like that. Not in a way that ML is overshadowed. They still need support from each other. I believe the others says that because the POV is centered on the shou so we get much information hence believing the MC is overpowered. In the end of the first arc, the ML can now cultivate so I disagree to those who says those. Only, if they say that the shou has so many advantages like the space and everything I agree to that, it's just that, just like the others the author didn't utilize it well. I still feel its lacking.

Honestly, there are plot holes and the fluidity of the plot was not good. Especially the transition between the apocalypse to cultivation. I don't hate this type of plot, I feel like it's refreshing because it's a combination of modern, cultivation, and then the apocalypse. I just hope the author had given this project more attention. I believe s/he should have more vision towards this novel. If only the author could have found a way to guide his/her reader from the changes. Since it wasn't done properly it ended up making the readers feel that the author just threw everything into this novel and that's it.

Seriously, this novel has great potential. If only the author gave more attention to it. So all I can say to those future readers if you are looking for a exciting and action pack novel. Hmm.. I advise to find others, this one, its not boring its not enough to satisfy yourself. <<less
