Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed The World

The world’s largest VRMMO, Conviction, was almost like a second world for humanity. It had integrated itself into the real world’s economy, with both corporations and individuals seeking their fortunes through the game.

In this game, Nie Yan prided himself on his Level 180 Thief. He could barely be considered among the top experts in the game. Though, that was the only thing he could take pride in. He was penniless and unable to advance in life; a situation he was forced into by the enemy of his father. If it weren’t for the little money he made by selling off items in Conviction, he would’ve barely been able to eat. In the end, he chose to settle his matters once and for all. He assassinated his father’s enemy. He lay dying shortly after being shot in the pursuit.

However, that wasn’t the end of his story. Instead, he awoke moments later to find that he had reincarnated into his past self. Armed with his experience and knowledge of future events, he sets out to live his life anew.

Iv'e made it all the way to CH.285.

I honestly can't get enough of this one. It never once stopped capturing my attention. It has a steady plot that keeps you captivated. Translator is top notch as well.

Id give it 5 stars, but I believe that would be dishonest due to the fact that I haven't read it all due to it not being fully translated and due to the fact that at times it had me cringe. The cringe factor was very low, but it's hard to overlook the author... more>> constantly jerking off in the background to his protagonist. "Everyone was so amazed at how super duper strong and rich the super duper MC is". Tbh, it's expected with this genre and iv'e seen far worse. I really have to reach to find much wrong with anything.

4 Stars may be a little generous, but you can't really beat binge reading something and not getting bored once. <<less

This has been on of the best computer game related novels I've read far.

Spoiler

The MC was a gamer who went back in time after he killed his greatest enemy but ended up dying and reincarnating a few years back. He is trying to save his family and make better choices of his life to defeat his enemy once more.

[collapse]

There is really nothing wrong with the novel besides those filler chapters which you can basically skip and still be able to know what's going on in the plot.

I don't really understand what is getting people so riled up with how it seems like he's having it easy with all the things he remembered in his previous life. If it were me I would see that as an advantage and would be really dumn if I don't use the knowledge I have, so I personally think that he's clever to use those advantages to his disposal. <<less

This was one of the first few web novels I really was looking forward to everyday, as it's a really nice plot and hilarious characters. But I would probably drop this if he was always in the game, but it doesn't as I like how he actually has a life outside of the game and actually prepares himself for whatever will hit him in life. And the romance really starts around chapter 240... so if you're hoping for romance to begin about 20-50, boy are you wrong! But you'll enjoy... more>> the story anyway. <<less

The story was ok, however the author made constant mistakes on the rules of the game, there are lots of good side character that don't get much development, the same on the romace side.

The MC heavily ab*se his knowledge of the game, because he "remember" everything of a game that he played 10 years ago.

If you can ignore the flaws on the story, it is a fun read but nothing special.

I am in love with this story. I don't know why, I've been in a mmorpg kick lately and everything I've read so far is related to gaming. Binged read LMS, ZL, Shura, and a whole lot of others. But this story just keeps me coming back.
Spoiler

I'm kind of concerned though that it takes 200 chapters and Nie Yan is not level 30 yet. His previous life was at 180, is he going to hit the cap or even reach 180 by the end of the story?

[collapse]

A+ on Nie Yan putting his advantage to use. Cannot wait to see where this goes. Wish I learned Chinese back in school, regretting it now T.T

This and Peerless White are currently my favorites. Thank you to the translators for your hard work.

Fun too read. But They are many plot holes. I give it a 4 because it's still a good read and not poorly written. The flawed logic are terrible though.

Spoiler

1) How does he remember the dates when all the patches are release in game. He was supposed to have started playing way later in his previous life. Yet he knows everything that is going to happen in the first two weeks. He seems to be able to know where all one of a kind item are located even though he never go it. Or how does he even remember the exact dates in which every new patch the VR game came out with. He even remembers all of the top players and minor top players..... In his previous life he was a small fry he should know all these not so important minor top players.

2) He trained for almost no time at all and he body just got super strong. It takes some time to go from weak to strong physically.

3) Why he doesn't try to change his friend even though his friend died in the previous life because his friend was c*cky and a play boy.

4) In the game appears you can't get the pages or chest once someone already has them. No game has that kind of game logic.

5) In one of the major combat scene he's all surrounded but somehow reinforcements can just join in, in the circle.

6) Any dropped item can be taken by anyone. Now that logic is messed up. That means you can just wait for people to kill stuff and players then steal their loot.

7) In one combat scene there are 300 players against 30 or so and they couldn't even kill their main target???

This novel is currently one of my absolute favorites. The MC is clever and effectively utilizes his knowledge of future events to start building his own empire, to both support his family and suppress his enemies from his past life. He is loyal to those who were loyal to him in his past life. If I have any complaints, it's that I would like for there to be more coverage of real life (very game focused right now).

For those who enjoy romance, there is basically no romance as of now,... more>> although there are some potential love interests. At the beginning, he does seem a bit too OP, but now more adequate challenges are arising for the MC. <<less

You will definitely love this one. From the secret quests to the crazy monsters, battling in dungeons and establishing guilds, this has it all. He uses his knowledge of the past to take advantage of the game and get far ahead in terms of establishing a future for money making. From buying property to just now starting the Union of Assassins, it is very amazing to see the MC and friends slowly stepping ahead.

Right now, MC is only level 17, and his best friend is the #1 ranked at 18.... more>> I suggest you read it for yourself if you're into novels such as this. <<less

Isn't this a bit over exaggerated? The Romance is just as bad as TDG. MC possessive and likes her because she's extremely beautiful. The Author seriously has a bad habit for Romance. Why couldn't it had been Yao Yao? She's stubborn, clever and funny...

It took me like 30-50Chapters to finally understand the world. Its kind of like a rip off Galactic Dark Net. But still passable.

Apperantly he learned several Martial Arts and how to kill 'online' and became a professional killer... That's the s*upidest thing I've ever heard! The story is seriously unbalanced because of the situations between Real Life and Online. I thought it would be a Assassin reincarnation to another world story. But the way it is now there's no good balance or good direction to focus on the story.

[collapse]

If you can ignore the Romance. Then read this. Its really funny and I love the RPG game elements. Its good cheat world building. I love the Players interactions. It just feels to short and easy! I wish this was thought of properly..

Spoiler

I love the fact that Tang Yao whose a playboy falls in love with that Lou girl. You could say she saved him from dying since he in the previously life he died from being a womanizer. I think they suit each other. I still don't know if they'll end up together... I love the fact that the MC uses his friends as a shield to hide his identity but the story to fast to enable to join it. Before you know it your done with this. Its really short

[collapse]

For now I certainly love this more then TDG though... Its to soon to say <<less

Not bad. Guy dies killing his most hated enemy and is sent back in time to his younger self. VR gaming here is big, and he exploits this with his future knowledge to make money.

Pros for the story - the guy's cunning, and just vicious enough to be fun while still good enough to be likable. He uses his future knowledge - which is basically only about the game - to swipe legendary items and defeat ludicrously powerful enemies. Cons for the story - you hardly ever see anything from... more>> 'real life.' It's pretty close to just being a standard reincarnation fantasy novel. I suspect this will change in the future. The worldbuilding of this novel is pretty decent, you learn about the futuristic world our MC lives in, the importance of 'backing' and wealth in China, hierachies. You also see the MC dabble in auction house flipping like in Albion Online, which is fun to read. However, in my opinion, being a die-hard reader of many korean novels, the relationships aspect is pretty lacking in this chinese novel. Most scenes in the real world focus solely on building his power and only last a paragraph or 2 before getting back... more>> into the game. And even though we're told of the MC's strong brotherhood and friendship, it just doesn't feel convincing. The dialogue is lacking, characters give responses almost instantly without the feeling of the 'passing of time' as you think and consider like you would when talking to people. The author rarely gives insight into what people are thinking before they say something, so we rarely have the chance to understand them as a character. And the female lead too, while some explanation is given at the start about why our MC likes her, apart from her being a :'alluring', ' jade beauty' 'slender' woman which is mentioned almost every time the female lead appears. It gives me the impression that he's more interested in her beauty than anything with nothing else to convince me otherwise. Finally, the 'OP' factor of our main character is simply too blatant and fails to produce thrill. However, I believe that if more significant setbacks and better dialogue that helped explore our characters was put into play, I would feel much more immersed in this novel. <<less

A brilliant story.

If you enjoy VRMMORPG and time regressor stories, then this is a truly great one. Five stars is too low, it deserves ten. Only complaint I have is that I read it early on, and then had to suffer through Reincarnation of the Strongest Sword God, thinking they would be the same. How naive I was.

If anything, this sets the bar too high for these genre's. And so, for those of you who loved this series, I will suggest a few equally good ones to keep you going:

Rise... more>> of the Undead Legion, Battle of Ascension, Solo Leveling, Everyone Else is a Returnee, Kill the Hero, Overlord of Blood and Iron, Arifureta, Hail the King, I came back and Conquered it all.

Tentatively I would add My Vampire System and The Supreme Magus too, but as they are unfinished, I can't confirm the endings are five star quality.

You will not regret this read. <<less

It is a bit of a disapointment.

The world seems really interesting with the army having mechas, spaceships, etc..., yet 99% of the story is spent in a virtual reality, and it feels like the author was draging the plot on purpose several times.

The MC could have done a military career in real life and it would have procured him protection for him and his familly, and probably a licence to kill, but he prefered building a guild in a VRMMO game and spent his time doing the war with young... more>> masters and face slaping them left and right, pissing them off to the point of risking the life of his friends and familly IRL several times.

Spoiler

Even if playing the game helps him becoming stronger IRL, he could have gone solo, without a guild, as most of his quests were done solo. Having the monopoly on potions shops would have been enough for the money, yet, 70% of the novel is just unnecessary stuff about guild and 1d characters, and after chapter 500 ish, it is really boring and lots of chapters / arcs, have no suspens and can be skipped

[collapse]

The beginning was great, but as it is always the same with most of VRMMO novels, MCs always create a guild and for sure, it upsets a young master, then comes the face slapping, and, repeat...

The worst, is that the MC knows the enemy of his previous life will come harm him and his familly in his new life, yet,
Spoiler

he does nothing to kill him, and waits until the last 50 chapters to do something

[collapse]

I kind of regret spending my time reading it. It is well written and translated, and is even better than Zhan Long for example, but it is still full of stereotypes and bellow most of the VRMMO korean novels. <<less

4.5 stars.

Despite some of the low rating reviews, I found this one immensely enjoyable. It must be up to certain preferences.

While the book was not hundred percent perfect, it was not awful, rather I liked it very much.

The author had put much effort in constructing the story, the different elements of the gaming world, and its parallel against the real world.

It was all very well connected and in my opinion, this is a satisfying read.

A painfully average novel. Novel started off interesting and I actually enjoyed the premise and lore of Conviction. However, the author, for some unknown reasons, continue to exaggerate details (while being sloppy af) in the novel which led to multiple cringe moments and glaring plot holes. For example, author mentioned something like the average IQ of the average citizen is 160 but MC's IQ is 200+. Just let that sink in. As for plot holes, the fact that MC remained unchecked by Conviction devs despite his anomalous in-game activities raises... more>> a huge question mark. The inconsistency in drop rates and power-creeping is also an issue that is glossed over as 'normal' in the game. <<less

I think those who says "If you liked TDG, you'll like this one" are wrong. I liked TDG and I found this one pretty average. There is several points that bothers me. First, it feels like it's a world of chuunibyo. They don't make difference between the game and the reality. For example, one time, the girlfriend of the protagonist is in mortal danger in the videogame and the protagonist says a cheesy phrase like : "I prefer dying with you than letting you die". That might be cool in... more>> reality but that's just s*upid for a videogame.

Second, how the author makes the protagonist so perfect from one side and the antagonists so bad on the other side. The guy lives in an environment where he is surronded by rich guys and the author describes him and his friends as "coming from a poor background". I mean, sure, compared to his ennemis, he is not in the highest of the society but that's a long shot from a "poor background". He is too perfect from my taste and curiously that didn't bothered me in TDG but that bothered me here.

Third, the number of times where the characters seems to have "genius ideas" where in reality it's pretty obvious. And where traps are soo obvious as well. It seems they lives in a world where anyone has 80 I.Q.

Fourth, the guy has a thief character but it's only in name. True, he often opens chests, but he steals from NPC or monsters very rarely. There is times where he needs sth from a character and rather than stealing it discretly, he knocks him over.

What makes me continue reading is that as a fan of overpowered MC, there is times that I like when the protagonist crushes his ennemis with ease but it's when he uses his skills and not his "genuis ideas". <<less

If you leave out the logic then the story is good or it will hurt your head.

There had some decent points about the novel - like how the main character established a guild, characters development (though its boring because Mc's friends were always best) , like how he monopoly his business and lastly war (A mini spoiler - MC was always best in war. No one thought how he did this.)

Ok and there had also problem like how the Americans were shit?.

As a story this book is really enjoyable, the characters are interesting and fun, while the adventures continue to ramp up in difficulty and excitement. On a technical level this book is bad. Constant retcons and horrible power creep. I mean the hp and damage doesn’t change for the last 300 chapters and skills, items, quest and pets are constantly being changed or forgotten. All in all it’s enjoyable as long as you don’t bog yourself down with the forgetfulness of the author.

This could have been so much better without the memories sent back in time framing. It seems Mad Snail really has a thing for this kind of story, but it's not a good fit for every project. Also, the layering virtual reality with the real world was done kind of poorly. Since it's 2 types of reality layering, the author would have been better scrapping the time travel and using the ideas from it to make MC a little more dynamic.

Mostly though there's just a massive lack of interesting dialogue.... more>> I don't remember ToDG being this dry.

That said, there's some really nice ideas and world building buried in here. I rate it Mad Snail/Webnovel. <<less
